Publisher's Description

2xExplorer is an extremely efficient alternative to the standard windows Explorer. It combines the user-friendliness of the latter with the increased efficiency and advanced features of good-old dual-pane file managers like Norton Commander. It is a package that will appeal to the power user, yet its similarity with Explorer will ensure that less experienced users will not be driven away either.

The author says that there is "no need" for a file type column in 2xExplorer, since file type depends on file extension. That's about like saying there is no need for a steering wheel in your car, since where the car goes depends on where you point it. However, you can SORT by file type; you just can't SEE what you're sorting by when you do that. Never mind that different file extensions can have the same file type. Never mind that file type information can tell you what application a certain file is associated with--information you can't as easily get any other way. I guess file creation date and time and attributes aren't important, either, since you can't add those columns, either. And oh--what's this? The author admits that 2xExplorer has "poor column handling" on the home page. At least he's right about one thing. This utility actually has real potential; there are a lot of things I like about it. But when such really important BASIC things are missing, I can't possibly take it seriously, nor rate it highly.

Excellent Program & even better for free.
Can have it on a disk to run on any computer. No Install needed that loads up more dll's.

Most excellent program. A great replacement for NC. Its been in Beta froever but thats just because new features are constantly added.. And unlike some other freeware beta programs this one did not become shareware when non-beta builds were released...

Ok. this tool is nothing special, but it's small, free and standart file-operations are easy to do. Additionally it has some practical extra-features (for example a file-filter).
Nice...

WaKa: While it's true that the version linked here is a beta, there are "stable" versions available at the website as well.

PS Does anyone know of a similar freeware file manager, but with built-in Zip support, such as transparently browsing .zip files as "just another folder"? That would be quite useful to me :).

Unlike other file managers which are big and bloated with features which you don't need, 2x is small(consumes only 800kb memory on launch), fast and very effective. It has become my utility of choice for drag & drop and other daily disk maintainence tasks.

Looks a bit familiar to me...try www.altap.cz for Servant Salamander; the original *and* best!

(Actually, it's not at all original since John Socha's Norton Commander was the original) but SS is the best!
