The 2.2 version of ac3 Filter works pretty good for me. I use it in Media Player Classic - H.C., and I have no issues with it whatsoever. What I do like about it, is that I can customize the built-in equalizer, similar to that of an equalizer setting in Winamp, and it works well. Using ac3 Filter helps boost the volume and gives the audio a definite kick. I wouldn't need this if MPC-HC had a built-in equalizer of its own, but what's done is done. ac3 Filter works for me and I'll continue using it, until something better comes along.

ACM driver works again (was broken in v2.0a).
Who started this project up again? Probably best to stick with version 1.63b.
Three stars for this current effort. Five stars for v1.63b.

**There was a problem with the Installer of the first release of v1.46 and it has been modified. I recommend going to the Homepage to make sure you get the correct version.
I can't find any issues with this software. I have since switched to FFDshow and can't find any issues with it so I'm staying with FFDshow for most of my audio and video decoding needs in one package.
I noticed in the past that AC3filter would cause certain Divx encoding programs to fail unless 24-bit was changed to 16-bit. I can't remember if it had to be STEREO as well. I'm pretty sure the official Divx Converter was affected.
I don't know which program is at "fault" so I can't take marks off.
Anyway, AC3filter is a great audio application which is comparable to FFDshow's audio components. People's audio needs vary so I'd try both but I recommend leaving only one installed.

Love this filter. would love to see additional codec support and perhaps some resampling options, IOW, a full replacement for the FFDshow audio decoder. :)

A couple points:
1) while this seems to work great, I uninstalled it and my vast collection of files (MKV, AVI, OGM, WMP, MPEG2/HD etc) seemed to work fine with Ffdshow's audio codecs
2) I don't know who's "fault" it is but encoding with some Divx programs (like Dr. Divx 2) requires that 24-bit NOT be enabled. Switching AC3filter to 16-bit wasn't really noticeable anyway since, despite having a 24-bit sound card I doubt that the audio I decoded is high enough quality for me to tell the difference. (I use NVidia or Nero Showtime's audio decoders for DVD movies)
So, while I've been relatively happy with AC3filter for the past year, I think I'll try Ffdshow as well as standalone programs for my video playback. KMPlayer is new to me, and I'm starting to become very impressed with it. It has internal codecs as well.
In general, I recommend having globally available decoders (like AC3filter or FFdshow's audio) as WELL as programs with Internal decoders like GOM Player, VLC and KMPlayer. This way, it should be almost impossible NOT to be able to play your file, and also you can compare which methods work the best and assign defaults as you see fit.

Too many problems and hanging and crasching with this newer versions!
I went back to the old 0.77, and now it is working again.
But first you have to restart the computer before changing version, of course... Just like in the 1980's computers.
I thought these problems was fixed 20 years ago...

My choice of AC3 decoder. As for the low sound problem - there's that master gain lever you can adjust.
In 0.70b some excessively loud pops reset this master gain to 0 which is quite annoying because you'd have to change it back each time. I wonder if it's been fixed by now?

Horrible Codec. It lowered sound level of my movie files by at least half. If you need audible sound, please avoid this one.

For the people who claim to have found an alternative AC3 codec, what is it? I personally have had no issues whatsoever with this filter. It does what I need it to do, giving me no problems in the process.

There are alternatives to this AC3 audio filter. Search google. I used this one for a while but like yourself, found that none of the settings were kept for the next movie. I also had a problem with quality and consistency in some of my movies. Its nice to have gain features to increase low audio but they are buggy and so is the filter. I am going to stick with my previous AC3 filter. This one needs ALOT of work and ALOT of bug fixing. Perhaps I will try it again in a later release but for now...I will stick with what I have.
WRFan reviewed v0.70b on Aug 19, 2003
one has to be a professional to understand how this decoder works. I've been using it for nearly a year and still don't get it. I try settings for hours, which then work with one dvd, then I insert another one and have to set everything anew, because old settings don't do it. I spend more time configuring the decoder than watching the movie. really. no joke.
Anyway, all my criticism doesn't matter, because it's the only standalone ac3 decoder on the market. of course you could rip intervideo or powerdvd decoder ax files and register them on your win system, but they are so closely bound to the host application that using them as standalone decoders in really no fun at all.
As far as I am concerned, I prefer my Hollywood+ hardware decoder for dvd and mpeg/mpeg2/ac3 decoding. perfect results and no cpu resources used. or try the xcard. They may cost money, but the result is waaaay better than with software decoders.

this is pretty sweet. it really does the job. configurable options in the configuration-screen, amplifying (normalizing) ac3 streams, equalizer options... 4/5 'cos there can be a slight delay where u have to wait a bit for the video when u fast forward the movie using the slider. otherwise, something i would advise if u use alot of ac3 in ripz,...
