O' geez guys, let it go.we all get it ''free and opensource gaim/avast/avg etc etc..

this isnt my choice of i.m but my nephew uses it and ive noticed it works much faster than the other aim programs by aol..

p.s what the deal with people scoring it based on its name...AMERICA ONLINE :)

Worth a 4 but tweaked to offset some pitiful reviews without any reason.

AIM Pro is the only AIM client that I use and probably will ever use. Its lighter, faster and less obtrusive that most clients. It's easy to set up and configure, and it's GUI is still consistent and pleasant to look at. It still uses the tabs that Triton uses which in my opinion is superior to the tabbing in other clients as it is bigger and easier on the eyes to understand who is messaging you and who isn't. Top that off with no advertisements, and just one process running in the background and you've got a winner.

However I have to dock a point for the inconsistency of AOL's service as i've had multiple problems connecting in the past. I can't blame AIM Pro as much as AOL's servers but since both are interconnected; the program itself is useless without access to my online contacts. So lets hope they keep it more stable in the future.

wow must admit, is pretty cool aol release this for people to used with their own domain name, the first bult had a few bugs, but the latest one seem to get rid of most bugs, you could also used your aol screen name with this or if you have a domain such as xxx@xxx.com , then you could used it here and be able to talk to any of your friends that uses aim or aol without having to sign up for a AOL or AIM account..

Love the idea....However, I cannot log in with my AOL screen name because it's trying to verify my RSA PASSCODE, which AIM Pro doesn't support.

So basically this is for people with *@whatever.com oh and my other AOL active screen name AIM Pro says it's suspended.

Recommend waiting on install until a stable build is released.

This particular build freezes as it tries to sign in - specifically in the 'starting' stage. I like what AOL is trying to do with this, but it's got to work.

It’s a great program that just has what you want the only down side to it that I can see after a short time of playing with it is all the windows seam large and you cant shrink them down. If you are like me and hate the new AIM program that is out there this is for you with no ads.

mauricer1

mauricer1 reviewed v1.0.2 Build 204 Beta on Jul 14, 2006

getting better, slowly going in the right direction. like i said before, if they can bring this a little closer to triton - as far as how it looks - that would be great. for me it works good, but looks like shet. and when u are looking at something all the time, u atleast want it to look decent. this looks cheap.

good idea though aol, hopefully more improvements will come along

bjase

bjase reviewed v1.0.2 Build 204 Beta on Jul 14, 2006

Don't misunderstand me when I say that this program uses over 60MB of RAM. Its IMMENSELY better than AIM Triton's 110MB. But why, oh why, can't a basic communication client use 5MB? Why can't it load the video conferencing feature into memory when the user wants to use it? AIM 4.3 was the last version that operated in under 15MB of RAM. As of AIM 4.7, its always 40MB+.

Before I get flamed by strangers who don't understand that Virtual Memory is also memory used by the program: if you are going to comment how much memory the program uses, please make sure to use the program to actually IM someone and then ADD the RAM and the VM.

xyzcb1 reviewed v1.0.2 Build 204 Beta on Jul 14, 2006

This program is so much better when compare to triton. I agreed with many reviewer, triton just pure crap. I gave it a 4 because it still slower when compare to old AIM v5.x, and as well as MSN live messenger.

This is the best aim version ever... dont update to another... they will make your pc lag or something!!

I downloaded aol triton 1.5 and that version is all crap!! i couldnt even see the messages i typed or what i received.. that version is on some other s***.. dont download it!!

If AOL has any sense at all, it would fire the engineering and marketing idiots who came up with Triton and go with AIM Pro instead. Instead of a bloated piece of crap that sucks up all available machine resources, AIM Pro is a lean, usable, and functional client.

FINALLY, an AOL-developed IM client that does not rely on in-your-face advertising, and does not install a ton of useless software.

This client has all the bells and whistles that the other clients offer, like VoIP and Video, without all the extra crap (does anyone REALLY need plaxo? or AIM Fight?). There are a few features its lacking, ranging from the mundane (buddy icons are nice, but please don't add the overhead of full-blown expressions) to the serious (integration with other mail clients would be nice). The desktop sharing feature is VERY nice. This alone is worth paying for.

On the whole, AOL has produced a quality IM client for a change. If anyone at AOL reads these reviews, PLEASE pay attention to what you see here! Don't turn AIM Pro into yet another piece of bloatware!

Wow... now, im the kind of guy that says "screw AIM, i'll go with trillian or miranda"... but this might change my mind. The outlook integration, like said before, is freakin nice. I kinda see what mauricer1 means about its look being a bit cheap... but on the other hand, i think it sure as hell beats old AIM and is way more useful then triton ever was. At ~8mb footprint, I think its a grand start. I wonder if they'll charge for it when its done tho...

holy crap. it works!

I was disappointed with aol's Triton crap. This is an excellent "upgrade" for aim's original feel.

ucforces

ucforces reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 19, 2006

I have to say Im really impressed. This looks alot like Yahoo messenger, and the interface is a steep stair higher than the previous version. Not only that, but it takes less memory usage.

Download your AIM Pro version today, dont wait, this can only get better.

And theres absolutely NO ads at all, I swear.

terminalx

terminalx reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 18, 2006

it is a lot better then triton my only complaint is it doesn't work on vista yet...not its their fault since it is still in beta but eh its the only thing I could find to complain about it :)

mauricer1

mauricer1 reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 15, 2006

it would be great if AOL made a medium between this and the regular aim triton.

what i like about this

1. LOVE LOVE LOVE the outlook integration. AWESOME!
2. faster than regular triton

what i dont like
1. looks real cheap. like a java application.
2. lots of other features missing which are present in regular triton. IE: friendly names.

a good START for a beta. would be nice if they bring this closer to the regular triton, or if atleast regular triton had the better speed and outlook integration!

treworld

treworld reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 14, 2006

This is really nice. Much better than the bloated Triton. There's no Ads in this one! Good job, AOL (finally).

Tokar

Tokar reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 14, 2006

It is a lot better than triton for a few reasons:

A) it feels more like the upgade to AIM 5.9 as opposed to a whole new program
B) the installation is more like that of AIM 5.9...certainly not the one seen in AOL Explorer, AIM Triton, etc.
C) there is no aolsoftware.exe process, just the lone aimpro.exe.
D) its faster than AIM Triton. Not faster than 5.9, though.
E) no ads from the onset...no need for AIM ad hack, yet.
F) adds a new icon for AIM Pro users...similar to the days of AOL users on AIM (where you would see an AOL triangle icon next to their name). In this case its the icon of AIM Pro, the blue/green one.

The only thing I dont like about it is that there is no Direct Connection in it, it redraws the buddylist too much, and for some odd reason I see that sometimes when I'm not hovering over the scroll bar in the buddy list it shows up as a windows default scrollbar, but when hovering over it appears like the one that is meant to be shown in the buddylist...odd.

I like this new beta, much much better than AIM Triton.

Note to TC: I was able to resize my windows man, no problem and im on a hi-res monitor too!

tc

tc reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 14, 2006

It's really not too bad.

I don't like the fact it doesn't allow you to resize the buddly list window to as small as 5.9 allows. I understand there's more in the window but still it could get smaller. It's too large for me and I'm on 1600x1200..

fatray

fatray reviewed v1.0.2 Build 110 Beta on Jun 14, 2006

No Adds what so ever!! It's like using the older version 5.9 with AIM Ad-Hack except a lot more features. No popup windows when starting, no weather just IM. Looks almost the same a version 5.9 too, just more colorful. I can't use the calender feature at all because I don't use Outlook, so that's somewhat sad. Would give it a 5 if I could use the calendar without Outlook. Let me use Google's calendar.
