Publisher's Description

AOL Suite is made up of independent, integrated applications that can be used individually or work seamlessly together when used as a suite. With the AOL Suite Beta, AOL members will have instant access to different applications without having to run all of the AOL software at the same time. Currently, the AOL Suite Beta includes AOL Explorer, AOL Mail, and AIM Triton. Additional applications and features will be added to the Suite as the beta test progresses.

The applications within the suite are integrated, so they can work together seamlessly, but they also work independently so you can spend your time online more conveniently. For example, in the AOL Suite beta, a feature called QuickNote which allows you to create your message and then chose which AOL application to use to send it. Also, in a suite, capabilities from one application can be invoked from other applications where appropriate.

I do agree. They have turned the leaf and created some high quality softwares, no doubt.

HOWEVER, the new engine they are using as the code base for all their new softwares is quite horrible in my opinion, the worst of all being AIM Triton. Everything is slow and uses a lot of RAM. I wish start fresh again. I know its asking a lot. But the thing holding me back from using these softwares full time is that they just run so slow in comparison to their counterparts (AIM 5.9/GAIM/Trillian runs faster than Triton, Opera/FireFox/IE runs faster than AOL Explorer, etc.)

AOL Suite, is truly the next generation of AOL. I believe that many reviewers are going to scoff at this beta, 1, because it's a beta that is less than perfect. But many people have yet to realize what a task AOL is trying to do, AOL software is a client based product. AOL Suite is a set of applications that relies on your sole connection to the internet and allows the user to control which application he or she wants to use at will. It's not easy for AOL an internet content provider to go from a client base, to an HTML suite. This project has been in the making for a long long time. And much time is being devoted to it. Instead of passing judgement on the project, I would be one of the people testing it. Be honest with the beta team and tell them what's wrong with the suite. They need testers. It's free , what have you got to lose.

If AOL suite beta , is going to be any better. quit bellyaching about what doesn't work, and head to beta central at AOL and test the software, and tell the technicians at beta about the bugs. I would only complain , after I've tested the software, reported the bugs, and done what I could do as a beta person to see that AOL knows my problem. If you can't do that, then your complaining about what doesn't work has no weight.

Some people also fail to update their betas, and so if a problem gets fixed they don't realize it has been fixed because their beta build is older than the current build for testing. Look at beta central and update your betas. You can't help the process of testing if you don't keep your software up to date.

AOL suite is very nice. It has the potential to be the replacement for the AOL client software, and with diligent testers and feedback about problems, it will be not a bad alternative for those who want control over their AOL.

Actualy the infromation is incorrect, AOL does defently Install spyware depending on what software you use, but this suite Has no spyware whatsoever, yet anyways..... The aol suite in my opinion is bloated. Very slow, and no AOL browser does not make IE more secure, it runs of IE, so all the issues IE has AOL has! try geting your facts right! Useing this suite, is mainly personal preffrence you either like it or you don't, this applies with all software.

I have a feeling you're being a little too over enthusiastic about this debate. Not EVERYTHING AOL does is intended to spy on you. The only real adware i've found when using AIM is Viewpoint Media Player, which is usually easy to uninstall. Besides, AOL is a well known company and at respected in terms of treating their customers with care, even if the way they go about it can seem...well...idiotic.

I don't think we will see AOL turn to the darkside anytime soon. *cough*180solutions*cough*

As for this review: they seriously need to put AOL in slim fast here. Even though most consumers have machines that can handle it, I still tend to see bogged down PCs due to all the extraordinary processes running in the background. SLIM DOWN AOL! GET THE F$CKING HINT! WE'VE ONLY BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE DAY ONE!

I mean every time someone types how AOL does use it's software to spy on you the post gets deleted. This and everything AOL makes does and will spy on you, that sir, you can take to the bank.

NeoPrimal, my system isn't really that crappy.
I've got a 2.8 ghz processor and a gig of ram.

Not sure why it wouldn't install, but i did get it to install on my laptop and it worked perfectly. Its an awesome suite, i love the functionality of it.

Tokar

Tokar reviewed vBeta 3 on Oct 14, 2005

Its a nice suite of software.

The AOL Computer checkup is a nice tool for cleaning your machine. Its no CCleaner, but most uninformed computer users dont know about CCleaner...AOL is a more household name, and if they were to use this suite they would get the cleaning and performance improvements that a computer needs.
The AOL Spyware...its nice to know another free antispyware product is on the market, but its not really as good as say, Ad-Aware, SpyBot or Microsoft Antispyware. It doesnt detect as much, and getting it to ignore some safe items (like RealVNC is a pain in the ass). Again, a lot of uninformed computer users have no spyware protection. At least the scanning engine is fast.
The AOL NavBar is really nice...its like a thinner version of the Longhorn sidebar, minus the clock. It provides access to all AOL Suite programs.
AOL Explorer...well its AOL Explorer. I really love the browser and it has come a long way since it was made public as version 1.0 beta 86 (its now version 1.2 beta).
They integrated AIM Mail nicely into BOTH AOL Explorer and the AOL NavBar.
AIM Triton I think is a complete mess. I really dont like where AIM is going. Yeah its great that they worked the client from ground up, but I REALLY prefer the AIM 4.x/5.x interface. There are no great improvements in this version of the public version...actually the public version is newer than the one included in AOL Suite.
Then there are some other worthelss softwares...like there is one that tells you what version of AOL Software you have...all the AOL Software.

Its a really nice suite...the problem is that its a friggin MEMORY HOG!
Terrible...my computer cant handle it, with 768MB of RAM and a 1.2GHz processor. I recommend at least a 2.0GHz CPU and 512MB RAM.

Neoprimal

Neoprimal reviewed vBeta 3 on Sep 26, 2005

Pretty good suite. Can't wait till the final. And I'd suggest you actually install it before rating it - if you can't install it, then it's your crappy PC, not the software, since other people can install it. Likewise, it didn't mess up MY AOL or settings whatsoever, so that's also an isolated issue. Back to the actual review...they're definately getting closer to a good final product. The sign in/out works ALOT better now and triton seams to meld with the bar better now; in beta too the sign in/out was a nightmare. AOL Explorer is still quirky at best and it still breaks the aol icon (which shows detected connectivity), but it's alot better than beta 2 to say the least.
They've also enabled the quickviews so you can actually see data when you mouseover or rather click on the buttons - nice! As I said, I can't wait for the finished product.

P.S - to those of you who don't know what a BETA is, it's TEST software. If you install it on your main system and it messes stuff up, you deserve it.

av finally got this thing working...it destroyed my aol settings and made it impossible 2 detect my bt voyager 105 broadband modem, i had go go 2 one click fixes and get it to fix the problem with aol connectivity services, then once that reinstalled i opened the program and had to get it to detect my modem and i had to configure the settings manually...the actual program is nice n the new dialler looks nice to n the navbar is good to, i wouldnt recommend this program to people who dont know much about how to fix the internet problems until the final version when this issue should be resloved (hopefully)

luckily i've got to versions of windows xp running on my computer and i didnt try it on my main one

I'm quite suspicious of anyone who writes that a software program "sux" and they want to constantly berate a particular piece of software. Most of the time I'm inclined to believe that the individual who writes the review hasn't even tried the software to begin with or hasn't tried it in many years. Bring something useful to the table besides it "sux". Thanks.

put a AOL product on my pc, if I was a 16 year old girl, and wanted to see what Britney, is thinking about, or if Jen will get togather with Brad again, I would put it on. But for any one that has some type of computer skills. Wouldn't touch a AOL product. I do repair and design and most people that bring their computer to me that virus- out are the people that use AOL. Then you asked them whats a virus definition? (their reply) I don't know

"Latest Changes:"

" * An improved installation experience with informative screens highlighting features of the AOL Suite Beta software"

-- Who cares? this is a "feature"? how does this improve the software?

"* A more seamless "Signed in" experience when launching the various Suite applications"

-- Define "seamless" when all you ever have to do to sign in to anything is enter your username/password and click "sign in". How is this different from 100% of the rest of the world?

"* Browsing with AOL Explorer is accelerated through AOL TopSpeed once you sign in"

-- yea sure. you go from slow to normal? So they implemented a cache-system like every other browser and call it "Topspeed" then consider it an added benefit...1

"* Active Tab feature in Mail displays all the messages you are working with in one location -- both messages flagged for follow up and the drafts you are composing"

-- Whereas Outlook and Thunderbird and others have always given you a view where you can view everything at once anyway...this new AOL thing is more beneficial how? ok maybe you can multitask a little more than Hotmail lets you, but then that's strictly web-based now isnt it..

"* New buttons have been added to the NavBar, including Safety and Help; and Mail and IM QuickViews have been enabled"

-- IM quickview? New buttons huh, if they put new buttons in then by all means we should get this huh. Safety? lol the only safety you need is don't go to websites that cause things to go awry, like the websites everyone loves to go to and will go to anyway...

"* A new Settings Manager for easy access to your most common account and personal settings"

-- So a new look to something that already exists and wow, now you can do, about....nothing more than before...the rounded edges on the windows make all the difference...wait that's XP's theme.

A newer version of the same old crap, so what's new? At one point when AOL did have sway over the majority of online users, all I ever fixed on machines was AOL problems, and the fact that AOL ate all their resources up and was still there and causing problems after the customers had switched to a different ISP.

I like AOL and their simplicity of GUI now with Package. The only thing I dislike are their running programs in the background WHICH/WHEN I am not using them. They claimed their highly recommendations of their ad/pop-ups blocker which I don't understand how come when I log in AOL I get their product advertisements all the time? So it's "OK" for them to allow that? I'll pass on this one.

I think this new suit is great, the AOL Explorer is a great broswer and Trinton has to be the best AIM and for those that say it is bloated take a look at MSN 7 Messenger that is more bloated than this, but you porably havn't even tried it, this aint bloated because everything is seperate unlike the client which was bloated but as long as you had 512MB of ram you would of been fine anyway.

rpavl how can this be outdated and bloated this aint the client version this has all the things Firefox and more?

I can't understand why anyone would want to run software that essentially takes control of their desktop. AT&T is my ISP, but I have no AT&T software on my computer. With more open source software appearing each day I can become less dependant on Windows itself. In as much as it is possible, I want my desktop to be "my desktop".

I like triton. I'll be able to share photos and files while talking to various friends in an organized fashion. No longer will I have to have yahoo for video conferencing, hello/picasa for photo sharing, AIM for files and chat.
