Publisher's Description

Adblock Plus picks up where Adblock left off. It is a content filtering plug-in for the Firefox browser. It is both more robust and more precise than the built-in image blocker. It allows the user to specify filters, which remove unwanted content based on the source-address. Every time a webpage loads, it will intercept and disable the elements matching your filters.

Forget about this slow and system heavy adblocker that sneakily lets all ads by multinationals on your system, and switch to uBlock Origin.

Becoming a pig. Went with Adblock Edge addon instead, which is a fork in the road of Adblock Plus.

Becoming a bit disappointed with AdMuncher, so looked into this. Nice work. With a lite ad block list to my Windows Hosts file and AdBlock filtering(including Fanboys), I get just as much satisfaction with the blocked content as I do with AdMuncher. So, I may drop my AdMuncher subscription next time around.

For those that find BetaNews too slow to load(plus some other sites) who don't use Facebook, add the following to your filter list in AdBlock...
||facebook.com/plugins/*
...And notice the great improvement.
Same goes for Twitter(for those that don't use it)...
||twitter.com^

Does not slow down the browser, safe, fully compatible with other Adds-ons, with adding filters it can even be effective for keeping sites away. (security consideration)

Absolutely effective. Now it upgrades to 1.2.

Working good with both Seamonkey and Firefox. You don't know how valuable this plug in is till you use a pc/browser that doesn't have this. I know IE has its IE pro, but it doesn't seem to catch as many ads as this plug in.

This plus Rick752's excellent filters (EasyList, EasyElements) form a powerful couple against nasty ads on most websites. I wonder why this hasn't been built into Firefox by default.

Heh, Canuckistani, I know what you mean. Whenever I have the misfortune of using a system that doesn't have ABP, I'm amazed by the crap I have to deal with.

Remember to add a "*$script,third-party" filter rule. Check out the ABP blog.

Adblock Plus, as great as it is, has two downsides. Firstly, when friends are talking about some annoying ad on such and such a site you don't know what they're talking about and you feel a little left out. Secondly, when you're visiting friends or relatives and you go to check your web mail you get a short trip through hell. No, the goggles do not help.

Yes, Adblock Plus is great, *if* you're a Firefox user. I give a rating of 5 for this, because it deserves it. Sorry to say this, but not everyone is a Firefox user and to compare Adblock Plus to Ad Muncher is plain ridiculous. Ad Muncher is far and beyond anything Adblock Plus can achieve, not just because it is browser independent, but also because it's much, much more versatile and configurable.

Metshrine

Metshrine reviewed v0.7.5.1 on Jul 11, 2007

This is a great addon for firefox, perhaps the most popular and widely used/useful. But, I think anyone who can honestly say this is better than ad muncher has never used ad muncher because it is payware. Ad muncher, and several other apps, get bad reps because they cost money and the firefox fanatics feel that all software should be free.

You can get ad muncher for free too, just go to their site and try the trialpay system. Free ad blocker which works with EVERY browser or HTTP application.

The first add-on I always install after installing Firefox, followed by the Adblock Filterset.G Updater wich provide auto update to Adblock ;)

A top must-have, you'll never surf without it again once you tried it :D

ballyhairs

ballyhairs reviewed v0.7.5.1 on May 2, 2007

Its even better than ad muncher, why? because ad muncher slows down loading pages while removing all ads and crap but this ones doesn't, and ofcourse its a Firefox extension and not a separate program.

Using Ad Block pluck together with No Script,FirePhish Anti-Phishing,McAfee Site Advisor and KeyScrambler make Mozilla Firefox completelly safe to surf.
I made a couple of web security tests and with these extensions noone found any security leak!
Ad Block Plus is for sure the very top pop-up protector!

I use this and "Ad Muncher" I actually like ad muncher better because it has better filter list, and more options to stop web trackers and all kinds of other ad related stuff, but this programs is awesome when combined w/ 'element hider' addon for adblock plus. I can hide things even if they aren't ads.

I've used this for over a year. Nice!

Best way to get this is:
Firefox->Tools->Add-Ons->Get Extensions

The link is currently in the popular section and is up to date.

ANOTHER GREAT ADDON for security is NoScript. Once you use it a little bit you'll realize how amazing it is at protecting your computer. I would not dream of surfing without it.

Contrary to what the descriptions says about Adblock Plus, you should NOT use the Filterset.G Updater.

Read the FAQ at their website:
http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project#filterset.g

"Filterset.G has been intentionally made incompatible with the built-in subscriptions feature in Adblock Plus, updating Filterset.G requires a separate extension which basically duplicates existing functionality."

Adblock Plus and NoScript extensions make web browsing much safer and less annoying. I disabled Ad Blocking and Mobile Code Control of ZoneAlarm Pro, so I'm able to control ads and scripts from within my Firefox.
Somethin about Filterset.G Updater many people Complain about. It's not about updating, but adding another filterset in Adblock Plus (and Adblock). In my experience it blocks more ads than filtersets included in this extension, so it is the only filterset I'm using.

This is part of the reason I have not switched to Opera. Ad-block Plus gives me everything I need that Opera is lacking a lot of. Firefox wins over Opera in my books due to many great extensions and this one is mandatory.

@Satansgeek: Filterset.G Updater is *not* required for this extension, it is perfectly capable of automatic updates itself. Actually, the publisher recommends not to use Filterset.G: http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_project#filterset.g

Satansgeek

Satansgeek reviewed v0.7.2.2 on Oct 30, 2006

@ iamanon

I suggest that you read the publishers description where he advises users of the need for the adblock filterset G updater to ensure *automatic* updates. The "plus" designation first referred to the addition of the white listing capability that wasn't present in the adblock extension.

@robmanic44

Proxies and this extension work in different ways and will thus often have different success rates when attempting to "clean" pages of unwanted content. Host files are another tool that can help one to have a better browsing experience. Please don't forget that when all the available tools are used to their best effect the user gains the most. I note that you say you use both proxies and this extension...rather than, perhaps unintentionally given your rating of this product, seeming to somewhat dismiss the benefits of this product perhaps you might let the developer know of your appreciation for his work which he gives to you FOC.

iamanon

iamanon reviewed v0.7.2.2 on Oct 30, 2006

Adblock Plus does not need "Adblock Filterset.G Updater" because it already has an updater built in (that is the Plus).

robmanic44

Much better than the older versions of Adblock and Adblock Plus! Install this first and then add the extension "Adblock Filterset.G Updater" http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1139539473/1 to keep the list of items for it to block up to date and you have a great duo of extensions!

stopbuggingme

stopbuggingme reviewed v0.6.1.2 on Mar 25, 2006

It migrated my large Adblock 0.5 D39/D40 block list successfully without any errors. Intergrates with the Filterset.G plugin too for automatic updates. Seems to function well and is preventing ads from loading whereas adblock was loading, then blocking from view.
No errors encountered so far.
