Publisher's Description

Adium X is a multiple protocol instant messaging client. This is a culmination of a year long rewrite of adium, which now utilizes libgaim (the core part of gaim) to connect to multiple protocols, and is also based on a new plugin architecture. Partial address book integration, cool looking tabs, multiple protocols for instant messaging, and a compact contact list are some of the many features of the new Adium X.

I downloaded adium because it's the best thing for using AIM on a Mac (AIM 4.whatever for mac is way too outdated).
And Adium is a nice client and all, but compared to AIM 5.9 for windows, this sucks donkey balls. As far as I'm concerned, chat clients achieved perfection with AIM 5.9 (once you hack away the ads, and such).
AIM triton sucks. AIM 5.5 sucks. AIM 5.9 is the absolute only way to go.
See, here's the thing about Adium. It's based on GAIM, so they basically have the same problems:
You can't do everything you can with AIM. There are just some features for AIM 5.9 that have been refined and refined so much over the years with trial and error combined with a MASSIVE user base, that they're just... perfect features. And you can't use a lot of them in Adium. And also direct connect simply doesn't work. And that makes me VERY angry.
Anyway... it looks nice, and it's the best I'll ever get on a mac, but... I'd prefer the windows version any day. I guess that's what Parallels is for.

Hands down the best instant messaging client out there. Extremely customizable, clean interace, very seldom does it fail to work, multiple chat clients in one (Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber..). I recommend this to anyone on a Mac.

To signifcantly reduce Trillian problems, disable the Rendevous plugin. It uses too many resources and too much network traffic to be useful.

illicitporpoises

illicitporpoises reviewed v0.83 Beta 9 on Aug 14, 2005

Excellent IM client. Easily the best for Mac, possibly the best for all platforms. Great use of gaimlib with a decent UI. Better AIM support would be nice though.

Also, the bloat in Trillian isn't feature bloat, it's just bloat. I had to banish it from my work network because one instance of Trillian with about 10 or more contacts open would take more resources on the PC than any other program.

good for mac, trillian bloated? what will the bloatkiddies whine about next lol

Kamika007z

Kamika007z reviewed v0.82 on Jun 19, 2005

Enough of the Trillian 3.x is "bloated" bashing garbage. Just because it's got Audio and Video capabilities like people where whining about for so long, doesn't make it "bloated". So enough already.

Thank you

BTW: AdiumX rocks on Mac OSX. I also do belive a port for this to Windows would bring in some serious competition. :)

purplehaze32 reviewed v0.81 on May 13, 2005

Easily the best IM client on any OS. If Miranda could provide the useability AdiumX does w/o all the configuring/plugins, there'd be a Windows answer. Until then, I'm sticking w/ Trillian on my XP machine and AdiumX on my Powerbook. Two thumbs way up!

for you windows lovers, till then, try GAIM for windows

I wish it would come to windows . Trillian is bloated as hell and this seems like a great program .

For windows id rather go with gaim or miranda . Trillian is an awful and bloated program .

I think i am going to put this program on the mac i am about to buy . This program makes switching over much easier ..

Not very lightly it would ever be able to compete with trillian if it came to windows...

This is a great IM program for Mac. I wish it was available for windows or even Linux. I rarely use a Mac. But when I do, this program is always on.
