After installing this add-in for adobe Acrobat and checking off to use all of its plug-ins, I went in to Adobe Acrobat 8.0 and found an error message. I want to uninstall Adobe Speedup but cannot find the folder where it is installed as the readme suggests. I have emailed the author but so far no response. Anyone have any suggestion as to what i should due to uninstall this software?

Very nice speed to adobe wait and read, Adobe should learn by now that perfomance is an issue when expanding software functionality until they realize this , I am using Foxit reader...

People, this is not the place to rate the Adobe readers! :-)

I installed Adobe Reader 8, and found it used a massive amount of RAM. After running ARSU, things are better (and faster).

Foxit is not a solution for me, for three reasons:

1. Not ideal font rendering w/ ClearType
2. Not fast rendering of images
3. Issues with search

Adobe Reader - Read: Adobe Waiter - most people use it indeed to read and Adobe made it almost impossible to do so. Use Foxit simply as that. There is no need for a speed up tool ;-)

rseiler- Version 6,7,8 are lightning quick because they sneakily load files with windows. Remove the entries from your startup and see just how quick they are then.

Excellent program, although it did not make as big of a difference for version 8 as it did for 7.

Oh, this is great. Now the Adobe beast, besides consuming massive disk space for a program of its type, also gets to consume massive system resources so I always can be ready to open a simple PDF file. Foxit reader does the same without trying to own your machine. Might sound like a broken record, but there still might be some who don't know about Foxit , so unless you're the type thinks extremely bloated programs like the Adobe reader rock; do yourself a favor and don't install this to have Adobe sucking your RAM up.

Why do some pepeol's rating/review's for this program, rate/review Adobe Reader????? This program do what it say, speedup Adobe Reader.
And for this Foxit Reader, sure it sound good, yet you have to pay for addon's to be able to "Foxit Reader Pro Pack is not free. It unlocks functions to save annotation, save a PDF document as a text file, copy text from text viewer. Actually without Pro Pack, you are still able to annotate a PDF document and print it out. However when you save the annotated document, it will be stamped with an evaluation mark on the top-right corner of the annotated pages. If you purchase a Pro Pack add-on, then there will be no evaluation mark."
Well if you only open pdf to read and nothing more its fine. I'll stay with Adobe Reader and Adobe Reader SpeedUp

Yes, it does speed up the entire process, as it so rightly says... however, once you've carried the adobe reader speed up set up, you won't be able to update your adobe reader through the utility "check your updates". I have the latest adobe reader and this is what i found. However, when i removed the adobe reader speed up thingy, i could update my reader once again. Also, other utilities like online support and other help options were disabled too.

It enables to increases speed of Adobe Acrobat READER to imediate loading (Klick on .pdf and its same second Open).

Anyway i like if people mention alternatives, but rating should be on tha tool itself. So Foxit PDF reader is for most HomeUsers a good alternative to Adobes Reader.

I like brand B more than brand A, but not necessarily because Brand B does a better job than brand A. It might be because Brand B does it in a way that I like it to be or the packaging of Brand B's product is more attractive.

Siliconman, the "SpeederUpper" is that Adobe Reader 7.0 loads many of the information into memory as soon as Windows starts by adding a shortcut to the Startup folder in the Start Menu. By running this speed-up program, you can remove the shortcut within the Startup folder and Adobe Reader will still start up quickly. Try moving the shortcut temporarily and restart your computer. You'll notice your computer start a little faster (at least if you're not running a top-of-the-line machine), and when you run Adobe Reader, it'll crawl just like 6.x did. Once you run this, you'll notice a *huge* difference. If you don't run 3.x GHz machine (my primary computers are a 800 MHz laptop and a sub-2 GHz desktop), this program is a godsend when viewing PDF files.

After I ran this program then tried Adobe Reader v7.0 it re-installed itself. It seems that whatever changes are made by the Speedup program are being detected and undone by v7.0 of the reader.

User61

User61 reviewed v1.32 on Jan 8, 2005

Check your startup folder rseiler, it also loads faster because Acrobat is preloaded when you start windows. I personally don't like to have anything starting up when I load Windows other than real essential stuffs. Adobe Reader Speed-Up was great up for Acrobat up to v6.0.3 even though I removed any traces of it in the startup procedure.

rseiler

rseiler reviewed v1.32 on Jan 8, 2005

Basically obsolete now if you're using v7.0, which handles plugins differently so that they don't affect spartup speed whatsoever.

lordgibbness

lordgibbness reviewed v1.32 on Jan 8, 2005

It's a useful app, but I find it easier to move ALL plugins (*.api) from the plug_ins folder to the optional folder. This stops them from being loaded, and it takes no time at all to start.

Opening PDF files are a nuisance. I also avoid opening them due to the amount of resources and time it takes to open. I agree with Ted towards that point. Not everyone has the money to buy new PCs just to open PDF files faster. We mainly read or print PDF documents so it would be more practical if the documents opened just as fast as any text file.

httpd.confused

This version seems to be an improvement. See the blurb that says this version adds "Detection of Acrobat/Reader via the registry"? That's what one of the problems was in version 1.30. Not only did it force me to find the Adobe Reader EXE manually, it threw an error sometimes when I tried--and forgot my settings on still other occasions. So sorry, I don't have time to write an essay for every review I write, even if I, myself, know what I'm talking about.

Go the this program's website (click on Joseph Cox, above) and then download v1.21 using the link under the calendar.

RMerlin

RMerlin reviewed v1.22 Test on Jun 28, 2004

With that kind of program, maybe Adobe will get the idea that people are tired of waiting 30-45 secs just to launch a PDF viewer because their application has to load plenty of plugins nobody cares about. Those plugins should really be optionnal at install time.

As for the reason for such a program to exist: before that, I didn't even know that all those AR plugins were actually optional. Not mentionning all the people who don't know how to use Explorer to manage files.

The tweak-app works pretty well, but sometimes comes up with errors for pages with forms or embedded video/audio. An alternative tweak can be done which is equally as effective. All you need to do is the following steps:

1) Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (or wherever the app is installed)

2) Create a directory called "optional"

3) And move all of the files from the "plug-ins" folder in to the new "optional" folder.

I've tried renaming the folder, but *SOMEHOW* this causes occasional crashes on some systems.

worked as advertised, and let me disable all of the crud that AcroRead loads on startup, but I eventually got an error when I started up acroread 6 that said that there was a problem with the install and I needed to reinstall.

I'll be sticking to acroread 5 because it sucks less (in pure suckage, and in amount of ram sucked)

I wish there was an OS native pdf viewer for Windows that didn't need to load a whole other giant app.

What we really need is "Acrobat Alternative" :)

Compact, fast, well explained and does what it says. Even better, for freeª

Excellent.

First of all, thanks for making it freeware. Second of all, thanks for including the help section on each plugin. And the program works great -- no problems so far with opening and viewing my Pdf files.

Aires: Junior, learn to read. Having acquired that exceedingly useful skill, learn to comprehend what you have read. That's all I have to say to you.

Aires

Aires reviewed v1.11 on Dec 28, 2003

Can you be more specific about the error you saw (the author does read this forum). Or could you perhaps contact the author on his homepage and let him know of the error. If you let him know what the error is it will help make it a better app. (3stars 'middle of the road' rating as this post is not to rate the app).

scodan

scodan reviewed v1.11 on Dec 28, 2003

But it's OK to review multiple times if you DO plan to keep using it? OK, nice logic there. I ran this thing, then immediately decided to undo the changes and remove it. When I tried undoing my changes, it threw an error. I hadn't screwed with anything manually, and I had full privileges to the directories in question, so there is no "user error" explanation to that failure. Lame.

BootBlock

BootBlock reviewed v1.11 on Dec 27, 2003

Roj: Sorry if I gave the impression that you were dissing the app; that wasn't what I meant to put across. Was just saying that I don't really have much control over who submits the app to BetaNews as soon as I release it, even though it's a (my) site-only release. One more thing to BetaNews: I don't mean that BN getting releases listed the moment they're released is a bad thing, it's just that it might be a good idea to hold back if an app seems to be getting updated very regulary (for example: it personally annoys me that AdAware definitions are listed almost every other day - AND they're *only* definitions!). Although technically that kinda defeats the point.. dunno, really. Speaking of which, the next Adobe Reader Speed-Up will probably be the last release as there isn't really much I can add to it. I'll hold it back for a bit instead of just releasing it the micro-second it's done. This release is more worthwhile in that it adds support for Adobe Acrobat 3, 4.00 and 4.05, plus whatever else I/others can think up.

Aires

Aires reviewed v1.10 on Dec 26, 2003

This is a very very cool 'must have' tool. I'd like to try it with Acrobat PRO to see if it works with that, but if you have Acrobat Reader installed, you really sjould try this. I hope Adobe never find out about this tool and it disappears. Most excellent and kudoes to the author for doing this.

BootBlock

BootBlock reviewed v1.10 on Dec 26, 2003

I haven't personally tested them, but apparently Adobe Reader Speed-Up works with all free and full versions of Acrobat 4 and 5, and Reader 6. I didn't even know Acrobat 5 had plugins, let alone Acrobat 4..

WRFan

WRFan reviewed v1.10 on Dec 26, 2003

the most useful programme since the invention of windows! however: I don't have the reader, I have the full acrobat version. Does it support it? cause I've got nearly every acrobat plugin on earth and my pc takes 10 min. to load them all and eats 120 mb ram! so I removed some of the plugins from the plug_ins directory. but to do that manually is uncomfortable. I really need a prog like this one for the full version of acrobat 6

But an installer wold be the best. Just take the cool and smart nsis installer (http://nsis.sourceforge.net/site/index.php). The overhead would be approx 34 KB. and thats ok.

BootBlock

BootBlock reviewed v1.09 on Dec 22, 2003

Have YOU tried loading various PDF files in succession? How about using Acrobat Reader on a laptop or a slow(er) PC? Please don't rate if you do not have a use for the software as it artificially impacts the overal rating, even if it's just to say that it "works".

Nice program. Two suggestions though.

It would be nice if there was a description column that listed any known info about what the plugin does and what might stop working if it is disabled.

Also, check for Read/Write privs before starting the move. Now it says file not found.

Ehrihk

Ehrihk reviewed v1.00 on Dec 20, 2003

Adobe Reader took at least eight seconds starting up but this program (using the Fast-Startup) cut it down to less than two seconds. Very easy and very impressive!!

BootBlock

BootBlock reviewed v1.00 on Dec 20, 2003

JEdwardP: I'll add the option for specifying a backup location in the next version. You can see which plugins are retained/excluded via the checkmarks in the listview when you select a "speed-up" mode. You can also (un)check the plugins of your choice. Thanks everyone for the nice feedback!

JEdwardP

JEdwardP reviewed v1.00 on Dec 20, 2003

A nice way to automate the removal and backup of the reader's many unnecessary plug-ins. Functionally, it's a 5-star program; I rate it 4 only because I think the user should be given an option as to WHERE the backups directory is placed, and that the documentation should list what plug-ins are retained by the two pre-set "speedup modes".

Joco

ReuvenNY

I do not have the reader, I have Acrobat 6, the full program. The program seems to insist on AcroRd32.exe, which I don't have. Have no clue what to do. The concept is great.

tcmjr

tcmjr reviewed v1.00 on Dec 20, 2003

It deserves 4 stars. Almost perfect ;)
I was wondering myself the other day about doing just this (removing the plugins , not doing the soft) , but waz to lazy to read the plugins descriptions and find out what was necessary.
What about a coment of what the plug-in do ? you could just copy over the description from reader itself.
That , and I think for it's usage , the program will be perfect.
