use full when blindwright can't make a back up copy work 100% seems both programs work a like in some ways, when one don't work great for the disk copys there is choice between the two programs for getting a perfect copy, just one lacks features than the other.

given time i belive that other features may be added, to copy disks can be long and boring process with such hard protection' but same for most copy programs there seems no 3 min quick ripp unless you only copy 700mb disks, expect 20 mins or so for dvd backup with protection, depends what protecton on a disk there is, other program you could use with such same features is Fantom, in all does it job well but 30 days is not very long 120 days trial for most software would be way better, buy the time you blink the 30 days is over....

A solid program, but not as useful as it once was.

Don't know what the reviewer below me is talking about. This program only recently reached v2. There's never been a version 3.47.

Maybe he's talking about Daemon Tools? Who knows?

Nice burner, indeed. Has a few features that Nero 10 can't offer: virtual CD / DVD, burn disk with low speed, make images of protected disks (this feature is not needed these days, at least for me).

I've always enjoyed this software & I'm looking forward to what v2.x will bring us.

To those not understanding the current half-price offer there was a newsletter sent out to registered users that stated the following:

With the release of version 2 comes our new price structure.
Next week, lifetime licenses will increase back to the price of 59 Euros (excluding VAT @ 19% if you are within Europe) and
1 year free updates will be 39 Euros (excluding VAT @ 19% if you are within Europe)

So yes, the current price of 39 Euros *IS* half-price of what the new price is going to be for lifetime licenses.

"Special limited half price Lifetime Upgrades offer". Hilarious. Here's one for you:

Q: When is a "limited time offer" not really a "limited time offer"?

A: When it's being offered by a software vendor.

Currently the price for a lifetime upgrade license for Alcohol 120% is $57 USD. I bought it for a few bucks LESS than that last year!

@4122: I got that newsletter, too, but I didn't fall for it. Don't you see what they did? Double the price, and then pretend there's a half-off special in place. So the actual price stays the same, except they get to advertise a "limited-time special" for as long as they want to, and be extremely flexible with the price by altering that discount as they see fit and as time goes on.

Its not 64 bit only. Its covers both 32 and 64 bit. 64 bit coverage is far better than it used to be and AFAIA, there is now no difference in functionatlity between the two. They were a bit slow to implement 64 bit machines but thats all.

It does what it needs to do and does it well.

Tao2005

Tao2005 reviewed v1.9.7.6221 on Sep 27, 2008

Ah, so it's 64 bit, that's why I didn't see it after the setup, rebooted my system. I am looking for a disk image tool that'll load any CD's with out the CD. What a shame. The free version worked for me, but now forget it. I hate 64 bit. Never really caught my eye to begin with. All these horror stories that I been hearing. Come from these type systems. So no thanks, I'll stick to my 32 bit. Prolly have better luck looking else where for a program that does what I want. 64 bit is a turn off for me.

echohead

echohead reviewed v1.9.7.6221 on Feb 27, 2008

i used to love it, but its 64-bit support is shoddy at best. daemon tools pro advanced seems to do the exact same thing as alcohol, only daemon doesnt crash when i try to:

-make an image
-burn an image to a disk

Hi @ all,

im very happy with this Software it covers all my needs for a image tool. I used to have DemonTools Pro Advanced and am very disapointed in its fetures. With Alcohol-Soft I can mount, backup and burn Images with no Problems. I can use Multiburners to burn Multible CDs at once.

I think when you buy a Software youll have to be confident with it. Thats why you Try before you Buy. ;)

That Alcohol Supports more and more Hardware and CD-DVD........ Is great and a good approach.

Keep on going Alcohol-Soft. :D

Best regards Val.

-Lord- reviewed v1.9.7.6221 on Feb 24, 2008

I stick by my previous review of this software. Everything said there is still true about it. One exception: I tested this version, and still no changes other than support for burners etc. Still no mastering ability. The exception is that I no longer use this for disk mounting anymore. Elaborate Bytes has a freeware version (TOTALLY FREE) for virtual disk to mount images. Used in combination with imgBurn, I can master disks, create images, burn virtually ALL formats of images, mount them etc etc etc... and I do it all for free.

Alcohol has gotten bloated, and the price tag is ridiculous considering all of this. $57.00 is simply CRAZY with only one year of updates.

You will also find that the other reviews for this software that hit 4 or above, seem to be from the developers themselves posting their changelog in a positive review for themselves, and that's just in poor form.

-Lord-

-Lord- reviewed v1.9.7.6022 on Dec 27, 2007

I once really like this software. In fact, I also helped moderate a channel/forum for support of this program. It's lacking, however, in that it has never had any disk mastering function (the ability to add files etc to make custom burns without having to create images). When checked a couple of years ago, they had promised it in the works and have never delivered. Along came DVD Decryptor and this program went by the wayside. DVD Decryptor gave way to the legal hub bub and changed to ImgBurn (same program without the ability to rip DVD's). The cool thing about ImgBurn is that it does everything Alcohol does, but it's MUCH smaller, DOES include disk mastering, and is totally and completely FREE. I do miss the ability to mount images in Alcohol, so I stick with an older version that still works solely for that feature. Until they add disk mastering, it's bloatware since other software does what this one does, costs way less, or is even freely available with no timeouts, adware etc.

This program was once promising, but the only promises I see now are increasing bloatware like Nero, and still no needed other features.

echohead

echohead reviewed v1.9.7.6022 on Dec 26, 2007

-right click shell extension is once again broken on 64-bit XP.
-icons for files associated with alcohol 120 are broken for some reason.
-crashes whenever i try to burn a disk image.
-in this version you are supposed to be able to set a larger buffer - if you have enough RAM. on a 64-bit XP box with 5GB RAM, the maximum buffer was still 256MB. the option for 512MB and 1024MB were not even there.
-the new "xtra wizard" is a good idea, but it needs work. all the images the xtra wizard use the UDF format, which has always given me problems - after making several different images and burning them to disks, ive ended up with a bunch of coasters.

under normal circumstances, i really enjoy this program. but all the problems with this version are really unacceptable.

I would like to know which software the reviewer below me thinks does better 1:1 copies. I have tested and tested and tested and Alcohol 120 always comes out on top. Never has failed me to make a perfect 1:1, whereas nearly every other programs have.

urbanriot

urbanriot reviewed v1.9.5.4327 on Jul 31, 2006

Excellent program which does a fairly decent job of 1:1 copies (not as good as some other programs though) and an excellent job at emulating drives from images.

Unfortunately they're slower to update their software than Daemontools and some of the other utilities so there's always a bit of a wait to emulate the latest and greatest software.

I would have given this a 5 if not for the strange, continual communications the software makes to alcohol's web page after registration.

Registered

Registered reviewed v1.9.5.4212 on Jun 16, 2006

i just wanted to note, as it has not been done so, that this programs tries its very very best to give you a 1:1 copy,

it knows and recongnizes manys PC (Mainly) copy protections and has certain tricks up it's sleeve to bypass these protections,

although i should note that starforce 3 and sucurom new version 7 can not be beet this way, other implementations will be required from 3rd party (free) utilities (which means that the image created will need to be emulated through deamon tools, and black list blockers will help deamon tools from being detected or black listed)

all in all i fear that Alcohol is up against a brick wall now, because all new protections coming out are very strong and has good blacklisting technology, and until alcohol can find a way of encrypting there Virtual Drive Driver and really increase there stealth capabilities then Acohol will be detected a lot of times, and the 3rd party utilites i was talking about don't really support this software in paticular as it's comercial.

but don't get me wrong this software is amazing and with the help of copy protection detectors (a utility that will scan the copy protected CD/DVD and tell you what protection is being used) the user will know what optimal settings to use for those protected CD/DVD,

all in all i recommend this software for many, but for those who need virtual CD/DVD emulation then this software is behind in times.(deamon tools added with some very powerful free anti-blacklisting utilities is more superior)

P.S. alcohol is good for music CD's aswell, if you want a perfect error free copy of a music CD then this is the way to do it 100%, and if there is problems with the RIP, alcohol will tell you, where as many rippers do not.

and with mutiple retries it can recover damage disks (discs that need to have certain sectors read mutiple times to cross compare and verify integgrity) which i use quite often if i can't get my music CD as clean as one would like it to be.

summary : - as a Ripper 100% recommended
but a 3rd party utility will be required to detect which protection is being used (If one) on the disc.

as a virtual Drive, no, not enough stealth capabilities (keeps being detected)
and mounting and unmounting can be slow and tiresome (deamon tools is faster, easier, and more powerful in keeping itself hidden and protected)

in acohol's defence though, it has to be said that deamon tools was soley designed to be a powerful emulator ONLY,

Acohol was designed to be the most powerful Ripper (1:1 duplication) and it succeeds!.

The best image handler I've used, it rips, mounts, burns, and looks good doing it!

Point deductions for:
-Online activation. Ew. Price is high for something you can't use between even two of your own machines, and there's always the problem with what happens if the company disappears.
-Slow updates. Alcohol used to be updated constantly, but now it's rather fallen behind with blacklists and whatnot.

Easily the best all-round CD Ripping, Emulation, and Recording program there is. I have used a number of them and this one easily tops them all. It has a simple user-interface that nicely masks its underlying power.

This program is the best. It will burn anything (cue/bin, iso, cdi, etc...). I love it. I hate the fact that some games will not run if you have the drive emulation running though because of copy protection. I don't know why the use the copy protection because there is usually a no-cd crack out before the game even hits the shelves.

no offence, but Alcohol 120% is without any doubt the best burner for Safedisc protection and is also an excellent all-rounder for basicly any copy protection. Together with CloneCD and Blindwrite the best burner out there.

I prefer Blindwrite which is the most powerfull for securom and safedisk backup. Alcohol always messed my computer and nobody on their technical support solved my problem.

I love this program. I used to be a CloneCD user but now I have switched to Alcohol. I love it because it burn multiple image formats and I love the user interface. What up with this guy giving it a rating of * because he says that they stole the icon?? The icon has nothing to do with the usablity of the app.

This program is great. I havent yet used it to play a game yet like the user below has so I cant say anything about the speed. I use this for mounting SVCD and DVD image files and they dont show any real speed issues. This program is a solid replacment for good ole reliable Daemon tools Daemon just needs to allow more then 4 virtual drives is all.Thats not enough for most of my SVCD image files (one is 15 CD's). I like to mount them all then create playlists in my favorite Mpeg2 player (winDVD Recorder or Zoom Player) so they play right though without having to swap discs. Alcohol has worked VERY nice for that sence I descovered it a month or so ago. As for the dude belows speed problems, perhaps it has something to do with the copy protection emulation options. even in Daemon there not perfict but I havent played a game with Alcohol yet to see how good they work. Now for the one gripe I now have with this... It seems that this new version has changed the icons on RAR files to some red icon with the leters "AX" on it. it is also enabling the mount drive context menu (it is normaly not avalible to any files but thouse that Alcohol can mount) on RAR files to. I tried to mount a RAR becose the option was there but it reports "invalid image file". I dont like that it changed my rar icon without me telling it to and I cant chage it back (short of removing Alcohol and then re-installing winrar). Any idea why it did this? Is it a bug? Some cool; usefull feature thats onlky partialyimplamented that would kick ass? I dont know :)

I give this program 3 stars for great visual appearance, features, and easy to navigate gui. However.. it consumes WAY too much of your resources. I was playing a game, and the "play cd" was loaded into A120%, and the game was running HORRIBLY slow. At first I thought it was my computer for some reason couldn't handle the graphics, but then I swapped the ISO over to Daemon Tools, and the game ran PERFECT. With Alcohol, I ran the game at 640x480 16-bit still very choppy, when i switched it over to Daemon Tools, i was able to run it at 1024x768 32-bit flawlessly.

Final verdict, if they would improve on the consumption of resources this program uses, it would, by far, beat the competition. 3 Stars.

"Blindwrite does all this better !" ??????? :)

Blindwrite is not a virtual CD emulator, and it sure cannot burn all the image formats this can. I have used Alcohol since its birth - and its predecessor(sort of) FantomCD, and never had a problem with it. I know it takes up a little more resources, memory, whatever than daemon tools, but the interface and functions to me are worth it.

Excellent Disc-to-Disc copier. Definitely one of the best. Still using Daemon tools for virtual CD-Rom, but the cataloging of images in Alcohol is pretty cool.

Someone commented: Looks like a clone of Fantom CD
Of course, it is a known fact that the programmer who had
created FantomCD quit the company and created alcohol 120%.
So which is which?

Yes, user itsumo has right. I work with the DAEMON_tools, and this work very nice. But I have test 'Alcohol 120%' my system use many recources and I must install many MEGA-bytes.
DAEMON Tools are small, fast, easy and .... FREE.
Sorry for this rate.

This is my most most useful & stable piece of software I have.
I rip DVD's to Bin/Cue files with which I can just load them up without any converting & watch them.
What makes this software so good is with a push of a button I can burn them with the inbuilt Burning software.
Looking forward to the final release.

Who needs this 6MB shareware app when you have Daemon Tools (under 800kb) that does the job for you and then some...? Not to mention it's FREE.
