Free version of 1.9.8.7612 doesn't work in Windows 7 RTM yet, but it is supposed to be fixed in the next free release. Otherwise, a solid and stable program, with enough features but not bloated.

I use this free version. I don't need an image burner in because i use ImageBurn. For me six virtual drives are enough. i don't need spend money.
Excellent to play my "old and legit games"(NFS IV, V, Starcraft and Warcraft 3) and preserve the CD's and CD drives. I'm retrogamer :D

Hey echohead, you should really go to the Alcohol 120% page if you want to review that program. I realize this is a cut down version of it but to complain about features this doesn't even have like CD burning is pretty pointless here.

That aside, I have had none of the problems you are experiencing, everything works just fine.

-right click shell extension is once again broken on 64-bit XP.
-icons for files associated with alcohol 120 are broken for some reason.
-crashes whenever i try to burn a disk image.
-in this version you are supposed to be able to set a larger buffer - if you have enough RAM. on a 64-bit XP box with 5GB RAM, the maximum buffer was still 256MB. the option for 512MB and 1024MB were not even there.
-the new "xtra wizard" is a good idea, but it needs work. all the images the xtra wizard use the UDF format, which has always given me problems - after making several different images and burning them to disks, ive ended up with a bunch of coasters.

under normal circumstances, i really enjoy (and pay for) this program. but all the problems with this version are really unacceptable.

You alls know something. Gripe at me all you want. I think this program is a good program. You can't beat the price. I have used the previous versions, and liked them. Tried the trial version and hated it.

Think this version is awesome. The problem I had with the trial version is the nag. Worse then my wife.

Any how this is a supperb program.

I'd like to concur with the other findings. It's a solid program, and unlike nero, this allows you to mount 6 virtual drives. The install is mandatory, but indeed you can uninstall it without having ever run the thing. Just consider the toolbar uninstall the cost of the freebie. Their privacy stuff is crystal clear, and actally if I don't find anything happens bad with this, I might even try it next time. Maybe.

Oh, and the program is pretty simple, and good.

This is not spyware but admittedly it is sneaky and looks like it might be spyware unless you're willing to check it out carefully. Installation does REQUIRE you to install Alcohol Toolbar. This is an IE add-in licensed from Candeo which adds a search toolbar to IE (works with both 6 and 7) consisting of two DLLs which can both be disabled in IE's "Manage Add-Ins" option. Disabling the toolbar will not prevent Alcohol 52% from running. There is also a Start Menu shortcut which is provided for uninstalling the Alcohol Toolbar, and you can immediately uninstall it after installation. Again, Alcohol 52% will continue to work after the Toolbar is uninstalled. I did not test the toolbar for very long, but it does not appear to "phone home" except when you actually type a search into the box or if you allow it to check for updates automatically. According to its posted privacy policy, it never serves pop-up nor pop-under ads. Of course, it does provide sponsored search results, so obviously Alcohol is subsidizing this by trying to steal some search revenue from Google.

As you can tell from the previous reviewer, spyware practices have made some people so frustrated that they will have zero tolerance for anything which vaguely resembles spyware at all, and I doubt many people will have the patience I did, to check Alcohol's claims with Filemon and Regmon inside VMware. I like this program but it probably won't find a huge following until it makes the toolbar optional during install.

This includes an Alcohol Toolbar and there is no option to not install it. It can be uninstalled later from the control panel but I do not like being forced to install things. Most free programs that bundle a toolbar or similar give you a clear option to not install it. Other than that very big gripe the program itself works great. I would have given it a five if not for the toolbar thing.

Edit: I'm going to raise my rating since it seems the toolbar is not spyware and it is very easy to uninstall. Seemed to have no adverse affects. I still object to having to install it in the first place but considering you are getting the program for free now I suppose it's not so bad.

Hey DudeBoyz, BlindWrite can't make a perfect 1:1 copy of a disc that uses SafeDisc 3 (i.e. Doom 3). The burned disc doesn't spin up, and the system knows it's fake. But with Alcohol, you can get past that by mounting the image; SD3 can't stop the platters from spinning!

I'm sorry folks, but no where on there site is a "free" version. I've looked everywhere but nothing!
It's mentioned, but try to find it!
Even if its there, I suspect an ulteria motive by not making it readily & easily available. Stay away until it is found and easily downloadable!
