Best modern descendent of Norton Commander. Stable, good-looking and plenty of features. Updates can be a bit slow in coming, but they do seem to keep coming. I have used it every day for five or six years (except when I went on holiday to Northumberland).

Hi,
I'm testing many file managers. I use ZTree which is great, but it doesn't support Hebrew, and that's a problem.

Many posted that SS is better than TC.
There were some features in TC that I couldn't find in SS, and that are VERY important for me.

- File synchronize (not just compare)

- File compare by content. I realize there's a plugin, but it requires to select two files, instead of defaulting from those select in the two panels. I'm not sure if I'm right about this.
Anyway, it doesn't seem to allow me to compare a local file against an FTP file, which is a priority for me.

- Couldn't find an option for "Flat View", meaning a list of all the files on the current folder and it's subfolders.

- Does it only allow ten favorite locations? No favorite for *both* panels at the same time?

- How can I display a directory tree?? For one panel, two panels or none.

At this point, TC seems much more powerful on a complete different league, but since many of you state that SS is better, maybe I'm missing something.
I don't own any file manager other than ZTree, so I'm impartial.

I'd appreciate if you clarify.

While Servant Salamander has a great following with many people swearing by the program I'm just not one of them. It seems to me that many of the ardent supporters of SS and its dual file window approach are people that grew up on Total Commander and before that the old Norton Commander. I can appreciate the massive feature set that the plug-ins give this program but I just could not get used to the interface. For me Directory Opus 9 is a better choice.

the best filemanager.using it for 6yrs.first versions were not that good but rc1 rules.
used also total comm but this seems for me the best.

Excellent file manager.

Can be customized as you like; many additional plugins (integrated zip, rar, ftp); great batch renamer.

Using it for two or more years. Very useful and stable program. And it is not such overloaded as TotalCmd. Highest mark for it!

If Peter Norton had brought Norton Commander to windows, then yes, I'd agree its a rip off. But norton didnt, and someone had to, they did, and it wasn't Salamander Rip off Extraordinare. Not to mention Total Commander (formerly known as Windows Commander) has been available for the Windows platform for 10+ years.

I have been using Salamander for many years, it's great. Have tried all the other Norton Commander clones but Salamander is the one that I prefer by far. Many clones don't use the '..' updir entry so you have use the mouse or backspace to go up a directory tree. Why use a different method to move up a directory tree? Anyway, Salamander has the '..' entry and I couldn't function without it. This is the first program I install on a computer and the one I use constantly. Great plugins such as the Renamer (especially if you press F4 to edit the rename list manually and use VIM!!!) and the Registry search functions are great.

Wow! What a nice discovery! I have tried many NC clones, but no one was good enough for me (Yes! Commander is not good enough...). Some of them were too slow, some too complicated, some too spartan. Servant Salamander is a nice product and still in my price range. I will make an extensive test of it and if it will pass I will buy it. I think it is a very mature product. I have worked with it for some hours and I am very impressed.

to JeRrYFaR, I think that you should not rate anything what you have not even installed on your HDD. IMO it is not fair. If you like the other proggie - rate it and do not suggest anything what you cannot verify. If you are a politician you are justified :-E In any other case you are not. My 0.02$

I can't rate it as I've never tried it (gave it a 3 as everyone else seems to like it), but I personally use xplorer2 and I have not had any problems with it..

It's by far superior to most of the explorer replacements out there imo.. I would recommend it..

Servant Salamander is becoming better and better. Now with the FTP client and the 7-zip support, it has become a serious contender.
