I think they're rolling out apps for this mainline version (7.1) before they roll them into the stable uTorrent build in 2.2. Might be worth trying out.

Regular bit-torrent.. it's standard stuff... KISS, keep it simple stupid. Don't add stuff where it's not needed. Feature creep is all well and good if it doesn't slow down the program, and actually enhances it's usability in some important way.

I really liked azureus before they got bought out (or sold out) and became "vuze", even if it was a bit bloated I liked Azureus's interface.

I rolled back to 6.02 . Vesion 6.03 puts something in the temp folder that previous versions didn't causing endless pop-ups from Online Armor asking if I wanted to continue , no matter how many times I said yes it was there again on program launch ,[ in the temp folder but with a different number] 6.02 doesn't do this.

Guys, you don't get it. This IS uTorrent. Let me repeat it: Bittorrent v6.x = uTorrent. Different name, same application. Same source code.

As for software, it is decent. Though it may have a few problems in unusual environments. And featureset is not very large. If you need small%fast (fast overral work, not the downloading speed) - uTorrent/BitTorrent v6.x is your choice.

Azureus has more features, and is less error-prone (and even if it has errors, you usually can fix it by yourself). But Azureus is also a bit slow (again, i don't mean downloading speed) and consumes a fair chunk of memory.

I like the prog but I don't like it running a program [btdna.exe] and then not terminating it when I shutdown Bittorrent ... it continues to run in memory and I have to use the task manager to terminate it ... takes about 8420 K of memory which isn't much but I don't like they're not giving me the option to terminate it. I haven't compared it one on one with utorrent yet but it seems to work nearly as well on my system and has most of the basic features of utorrent so I had no learning curve switching over. -1 for DNA otherwise I'm comfortable with it. UPDATE: I was able to uninstall DNA in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs.

I can honestly say, that from experience, bittorrent is weird. I like it when it does the things that I want it to do and hate it when in the middle of a download it just drops to .1 kb/s. I might be the only one who experiences this, but I find it rather annoying. I think that the program sucks and if I could go into the negatives on ratings I would for this program.

For me it installed a service called DNA.exe, which is recognised as a virus by AVG Free.
It caused CPU usage of around 10% on a P4 at 3.06GHz.
It was sending too much s*** over the RPC service (which is svchost.exe as a Network Service).

This is unacceptable.

Use Azureus or µTorrent instead.

Azureus Vuze (3.0) is still good, but a bit bloated with their "Web 2.0 video content delivery synergy paradigm" or whatever. They still offer 2.5 for download, though, which I used for years and still love. That's nice.

But that's kind of besides the point. This space is for reviews, not rankings. And even if it were the latter, there's no reason to give this client the lowest rating just because you like another one better. That's nothing but fanboyism.

As it stands now, I really can't tell a difference between this client and the latest uTorrent, besides some of the icons, links, and the removal of pirate sites from the search field.

It's fast, resource-efficient, and unlike the old official client, full-featured.

Right now, I see no reason to use this over the latest uTorrent, but it's pretty good.

Sucks balls just like it's sellout creator. However I would like to simultaneously congratulate both him and uTorrent creator (our newest sellout) for putting in all that work knowing FULLWELL that the outcome might be to blackmail the demon corporations themselves! (RIAA/MPAA). For that i commend you and would have FULLY done the same thing in your unfathomably lucky positions. Never having to work again for doing literally nothing but programming some bs software that allows people to pirate shìtallectual property? g** d*** that was pure genius.

As far as from a usability standpoint, it makes no difference as it was garbage the moment it had .01% do do with anything RIAA/MPAA, as is the ultimate fate for the awesome uTorrent. No biggie, there will always be others and my ultimate satisfaction will come from the fact that no matter how much money the demons spend to "curb" the hit in their still massive profits, they'll never even make a dent. Not by killing BT, not by killing UT, and not by killing any of their future replacements (halite anyone??).

My GOD both the demons and their lawyers can't possibly be THAT stupid to think that the can even make a .1% hit in this... can they?? :/

There should not be any personal comments, while discussing a matter positively. None of us is the author of this, hence why to comment each other instead of commenting on the software. These are just the views and opinions which particular users may have, others may have a different level of satisfaction and a different choice of software.

Even a user is a newbie the blaim should be going to the software that why it is not user-friendly. Simplicity in design is not a proper excuse to avoid step-by-step help for a newbie.

I personally have used several BitTorrent Clients and found that the Speed of this client is more than uTorrent, however, I would still prefer to use uTorrent as it is light weight and rich in features much more than any other client, especially offering the full control on every single file of the Torrent and the easy and to the point search of Torrents on several sites from within the program. Every single piece of information is available on once screen in an organized manner.

The only problem in almost all torrents clients is the unavailability to auto-configuration or configuration wizard except Azureus or a few others. Without this feature I have seen 80% users are crying for slow download speeds just because some s**t port is not forwarded or the upload speed selection sucks.

Athics or moral lectures without result cause users to do illegal selections which I don't want to mention here.

I have been user of Bit Torrent from its inception. I am sick of this program, its slow, and cripples your network speed, and your computers speed. They fix bugs, and do updates without mentioning the changes. I installed utorrent, and have been very happy. It’s quick, and starts torrents faster, and connects to trackers quicker. I am guessing when Bram Cohen sold out to the investors, the quality began to deterirate. He is releasing minor updates to a mediocre program to keep the buzz going, while working with media companies to integrate p2p into the online systems. Hey World Of Warcraft uses p2p to send out patches.

this is the greatest crap on earth. it eats WAAAAY too much cpu and memory. plus, and now listen, you will like this, when you power down your puter, this stupid app displays a dialog, asking whether you really want to close the app. and if you don't click it away, winxp has a hard time shutting down. SOO ph***ING STUPID! utorrent also ask you if you want to close it, but only if you shut down the programme manually, not when it's closed by winxp on shutdown. so go for utorrent

BitTorrent 4.20.2 is a very good,simple client. nice new interface,and a few more features since version 4.4.1.I have used BitTorrent up until 3 days ago,when i made the switch to uTorrent. uTorrent has more features,and uses very little of the computers resources. however,if its simplicity and effictiveness you're looking for,i would suggest BitTorrent.it doesnt crash,its effective,its relaible. uTorrent is much the same but with more features and lower cpu usage.

i havent used this for a long time, decided to give ita try again. it is very much improved. a very clean and new interface. this is a very simple app. i use utorrent and it has much more options. this doesnt have any options for queing downlods or anything. like i said, its basic, buts its damn good for that. its come a long way. if you want a lot more options and control, use utorrent, but the interface can be difficult at first.

and yeah, the screenshot is old, the new one looks like ABC 3.0 but a little cleaner

Bittorrent genereally for broad band may not work verywell with dialup connection. I am quite happy with bittorrent and I used this for more than an year through broadband (adsl connection) worked fine. But in some connection I couldn't use any torrent clinets may the router is blocking. I am also happy about the mulitiligual coordination. This version absolutely rocks!
The author has done tremendous improvements since the last version....
The interface has been streamlined,now you can see the detailed view of all peers and stuff like in other clients...
You can open a new window,like download managers,to see the progress of the download,from here you can choose which files to download and which not....
The progress bar has been revamped with a horizontal bar which gives details of downloads and stuff...
Speeds are great!
Overall,fantastic work done!

I haven't used a Bit Torrent program that I'd give full marks too. It seems to vary from user to user depending on how much RAM, how fast the CPU is and how many downloads one does.

It is best to try a few. A couple notes:
1)Bitcomet I loved. I like that you can add a temporary extension so you don't get confused. However I couldn't SEED properly and it just was not right.
2)Azureus. Presently using. It worked great but if I have more than a couple torrents it freezes my interent web access and prevents my internet radio from working. Should be a set to DEFAULT setting. Doesn't add an extra extension. You can pick and choose which files to install, but BitComet's works much better.

In general, I recommend makeing a subfolder "Torrent Programs" in your Bookmarks and checking in every two months to see if any program is updated and try a new version if so. But, like I said, I just can't find one without issues.

**FYI: I found out that my ROUTER was not FAST enough to handle multiple connections. I can download at 400kB/s one or two files, but it drops down to about 180KB/s if I download too many. Bypassing the router via a Switch (leaving others on the Router), buying a faster router, or just running straight to the Modem solves the problem but reduces the extra Hardware Firewall security. (with good software it's not a huge issue)

I am using this bittorrent for sometime from home in Sri Lanka where I don't have anyproblem at all it works fine. But at office it doesn't work at all. I have tried many other clients. For me it seems like peer to peer file sharing is blocked possibly at the cisco router or elsewher. Is there any client that can bypass these hurdles? please let me know.

uTorrent was written without Bram's code. I am sure there are others. I give this particular one a 3 as it isn't quite that fast for me. BitSpirit is by far the fastest I have ever used.

The client may be poor as far as the GUI goes (hence the low rating) but the core behind it is pretty good. I still prefer uTorrent because of the queued torrents and such (basically GUI) and also because it uses way less resources.

I think that if the official BT client just added queued torrents (ie. one main GUI) then it would be a much better client and get at least 4 points ;)

I've recently switched to the official client from BitTornado. The author of BitTornado hasn't updated the program in months and doesn't visit the community anymore (and won't comment on future releases when he does). Very frustrating. In search of another simple client, I chose the offical BitTorrent Client.

However, I'm have trouble getting used to a few drawbacks in the offical clicent. Even BitTornado (in its beta state) excelled in over the offical client in several ways (in my opinion/for my needs).

One thing I find very annoying is that the offical client can't be minimized to the tray. What gives? I find it annoying that it's always in the way. You'd think that this is a basic function.

Second, when you're downloading a torrent, the offical client doesn't even show a share ratio, how big the file is, or how long it has been running. Not exactly crucial, but those statistics are worth having.

Third, the file and peer lists seem aren't the easiest to use. They are a bit clunky in design. BitTornado's were better in some ways. (Though the offical client can be sorted in ascending/descending order, which BitTornado couldn't do).

Lastly, there's no "finish allocation" option. (Maybe there is, but I'm not seeing it?).

As for my review of the new version 4.1.4 beta, the new search feature isn't crucial. I wouldn't have a problem if I could turn it off. But I can't. Why can't I?

This my problem with this offical client: it's too simple. It allows for almost no customization. I mean, you even have no control over the installation. It just happens.

That fact is good in a way, though--at least the client is being kept simple and unbloated. But there should be more customization in the client. You can't even email anyone that makes the offical client. The only email listed is one for bugs. I'm not going to abuse the bugs email to suggest other features. But I'm tempted to, seeing as there is no other way to contact them.

Most of the issues I listed above I can live with. I'm going to continue using the offical client, unless the BitTornado author surprises us with a new version. But it's ridiculous if it's going to take 5 versions to get tray minimzing.

Now, I'm not expert on BitTorrent, but I love it. I'm not complaining about BitTorrent here--I'm just a bit annoyed with the offical client.

Despite what anomoly said this release has nothing to do with getting money out of users. Donations are a reasonable request considering he developed the protocol. Plus, all you have to do is say you've donated and it stops bugging you.

Anyways, back to the software. Even though not posted here, the new version supports trackerless torrents. Now you no longer need to have a dedicated tracker to share files with other people. Everyone with a client and a website can now host torrents. See http://www.bittorrent.com/trackerless.html for details.

Bit commet is better but not bad.
paulm make sure your portforwarding protocol TCP and UDP are both checked. make sure the torrent program is using the same port you have open. Bit torrent best file share out thir yet for large files. If you run nortons atv or other virus software make sure aswell thir not blocking you out either, had that problem with nortons, use avg free better less of a resource hog

I'm not impressed with this BitTorrent stuff. I haven't been able to get my Billion ADSL wireless router to let any torrent files through for downloading. Even after all the messing around to enable ports 6881 through 6889. I even disabled the firewall in XP SP2.
I'll try again, but have wasted a few hours already!

Does a plug-in for a prowser nromally give you an install interface? Every plug-in to Firefox I have doesn't. The interface is minimal for a reason: It *just* works. There is no reason to provide location because the majority of BT links will be from a browser. It works fine.

This is a rating for the client, not the protocol. This client is, yeah, ummm... "minimal". Minimal like a pair of sneakers without shoelaces, where everything else is a fully-loaded luxury sedan. Yes, I'm saying it's a piece of crap.

It's so minimal, the lovely setup program doesn't even bother asking you any questions at all when you run it--you simply double click the installer, and next thing you know, it's done. Where did it install? Hmmm, good question. Did you want it installed somewhere else? Too damned bad. Where does it save its data? More mystery. Did it install shortcuts? Better check that. Does it have an uninstaller? Another good question.

Thanks for the protocol; now, please let everyone the hell else do the clients, mmmkay?

Great upgrade from the original client. Like the new interface and stuff. Only problem is that it has crashed twice so far for no reason. Going to stick with Azereus for now.

You gotta give a 5 to a guy that can singly revolutionize the way we get our data. While I don't use this client given azerius's features, I use subsets of this technology that benefit my own client. Here here to open source and the progress of good code.

In June I get a 10 Mb (up and down) connection and I will start my own tracker. woot!

Bit torrent technology is good and there are tons of torrent sites out there. A few bit torrent programs out there that are better rated then the multi-window downloads and the constant pop-ups of tracker issues, is bitcomet and azareus. Inside bitcomet it lists quite a few bit torrent sites, some of them are foreign but the it still has english programs that work. Just food for thought for you all.

I'm still trying to figure it out, which torrent downloader is better? Bittorrent or bitornado?
They look the same, yes. But I've found bittornado to be much faster and have lesss tracker errors.
Thats why bittorent gets a 4 from me.

Jesus christ, stop being so melodramatic, the BitTorrent protocol is NOT dead. If you want to illegally trade files, there are plenty of good tracker sites left. But regardless, BitTorrent has promise, aside from illegal filesharing. Grow up.

If this is the same interface as before, I find it difficult to use compared to more user-friendly interfaces like Azuerus and ABC "where the heck did my download go? Is it downloading??". Also these BT clients lack search functionality which kinda sucks as you need to rely on website which get shut down every few months. So for smaller harder to find apps I use eDonkey2000 which is as easy to use as Kazaa/Napster P2P clients.

BitTorrent is a good technology for sharing huge files with few people leeching around.

However, it uses a centralized design which makes it prone to being shut down.

Some major torrent search websites have been killed.

BitTorrent should evolve into a decentralized design.

The previous reviewer must be thinking of a different program altogether. BitTorrent is as smooth as glass and easy to use. No spyware or adware. I strongly recommend this if you're just getting into BitTorrent. If so, you'll be happy.

g** program dont get it..get another one for torrent files.
i was downloading a 200mb+ game and this crap downloaded 1.3GBG and it was still in 48 % i was wondering..but it does that to share more from you..insted of getting your file down..on top of that it brings a whole bunch of spyware...so watchout!! it takes skills to get them off..not just adaware(lavasoft)

Excellent program, though I too use ABC. @ShafuyZ, it kind of defeats the purpose of BT if nobody shares. If you use P2P, you're assuming a risk of getting caught. If everyone had your mentality, you wouldn't be able to download anything. Why should someone else be willing to take a risk for you if you won't return the favor?

Gave it 5-stars, even though I use ABC. Yes, I've tried them all and as far as I know only ABC can stop uploading once I have the full file. Go ahead and call me names. F you. My a** is what I care about, and it would be painfully violated if I'm caught distributing FULL files by RIAA/MPAA/SPA/etc. Unlike most of you clowns, I've actually seen the letters these guys send to your ISP when they catch you sharing FULL files (especially new movies) for a couple of hours. Some of you are bound to find out about this the hard way in the next few months...

I hope BitTorrent becomes the standard in future file tranfer protocols. :) Since it's open source you can migrate the BT implementation into an app as you would please. For example, id software would say, be able to implement BT into Doom 3 as a means to provide patches and perhaps other addons for the community with much less overhead than the traditional http/ftp standards. I hope companies utilize it's potential in the near future.

BitTorrent may not be the most feature-packed of all the torrent clients out there, but this is the one that made all the others possible. It still functions incredibly well and does everything it advertises it can do. However, while I give the author credit for his innovation, BitTorrent is no longer the best torrent client out there. I don't think anyone should complain about four stars though.

To all you folks insulting the "newbies" about how they claim Azureus, etc... is better; yes, we are aware it is based on this, but that doesnt mean that they can't be better. God, get a grip on reality, just because its the original, doesnt mean its the best.

you guys are nubs, bram cohen designed bittorrent and all other clients are based off of his work. yes, it may not be the most feature packed client, but without this, you wouldn't have burst, bitspirit, or azureus.

Dont get this program..when you get files that are over a GIG it wont complete them..well i was getting 1523(1GIG,523MB) of file and it downlaoded 5 GIGs and the file still wasnt done! this crap sucsk..Burst! client is the best!

excellent program, Bittorent is the best to use for new unlicensed subed anime. Bittorent is a bit Slower yes for a 56k modem like me, but finding the file a plenty of sources is well worth it. Good place to start to look http://www.animesuki.com/

Just tried it. I still prefer the latest version of Shareaza to snag my BT downloads. I dunno, but it seems to me a lot faster than this BT 3.3, download speed wise. Also BT 3.3 has this weird error when you start to download something, it "assumes" that the file is already saved on the drive or what, and it says "Cannot find the file" - something along those lines. The app still works mind you, select the destination where you want the download to be saved. Anyway Shareaza for me all the way. If you guys want a really good site for legal BT downloads, check out FileRush.com They have gaming files mostly.
