I use it because it scores high on reputable av tests, but I don't trust the wallet feature, I don't like automatic license renewal, and I will not use the included registry cleaner. Registry cleaners are notorious for bricking PCs. If some company made an av product that tests well and is not bloatware, that is what I would use.

Works fine on windows 8 or 8.1 with no problem. Have used Bitdefender for the past 3 years with no problems. Compared all of the other companies and always return to Bitdefender.

Chosen as antivirus product of the year.2013 (AV Comparatives)
Always at or near the top for real-world protection.
Resource usage is much improved and now is one of the best.
My only problem is it makes my internet connection spike.

Only a stunned monkey would give this a 1.

Maybe the best rated AV solution but caused this multi-core PC with 8 GIG Ram to slow to a crawl & at times to lockup totally, therefore from my point of view it's useless.

* Overcomplicated and somewhat cryptic UI slow and somewhat buggy. Tray icons are nearly useless..mouseover tells you what their doing but NOT what their doing it to. Gadget has no labels and mouseover hardly ever pops up descriptions. Avast! does control interfaces right, the industry should learn from them.
* Seems to detect more infections than others but most are heuristic-based. So its either finding a LOT of malware or a lot of false positives.

Tends to get great ratings from AV labs, but the UI really hobbles it.

I have used bitdefender for a few year now. I haven't has too many issue, however, over the past year I have had two major virus attacks that bitfender didn't catch. The viruses where known viruses that were out for some time now. I emailed and post messages to the bitdefender support and I never received any reply back. BitDefinder has failed at being a anti-virus tool and as a company in regards to support.

I agree with all those critcicising Bitdefender. It wouldn't be worth the 20 euro to do everything they ask me to do to help fix their horrible software. Never again. It slows stuff down, it gives you messages about updating stuff you don't want. It fails to update. Customer support is awful It is truly abysmal. it didn't used to be bad a few years ago - but it is now. Do not purchase.

why hello there

why hello there reviewed v10.2 on Feb 4, 2008

I just got done becoming disgusted with BitDefender Internet Security 2008. I don't know why this posting hasn't been updated, but I did try the latest version.

The AV has good detection, yes. But there were so many serious bugs I just couldn't stand to keep using it. For one thing, each time an application needed to connect out, the firewall would alert to the DNS attempt (a good thing), but would not put up an alert on the connection attempt itself. Invariably, the application would time out, and the connection would fail--except for the rare application that offered to retry the connection. Serious firewall flaws. I've never seen such an issue in any other.

The firewall alerts have "A" and "B" as accelerator keys. This means that if you happen to be typing when an alert appears, you can very easily accidentally (and unknowingly) Allow or Block a program's connection attempt. This is not far-fetched; it actually happened to me within a half hour of running BitDefender Internet Security 2008 (fortunately, it wasn't malware that was accidentally allowed).

The anti-spam component didn't work at all with Thunderbird on my system. Oh, the toolbar was there in the message windows, but none of the emails I received were scanned, the email/spam counts remained at 0 the entire time, and the spam test string (from the BitDefender readme) wasn't detected. Serious anti-spam flaws.

I noticed huge, random slowdowns. Sometimes, running Thunderbird took eons. Sometimes, merely deleting a message in Thunderbird took eons. Not always. Fun stuff, this randomness.

By default, BitDefender doesn't update if a scan is running. The problem is that if you start a scan, then stop it and close the scan window, it thinks the scan is still taking place--until you restart BitDefender or reboot. This means if you start a scan and then cancel it, BitDefender won't update itself until you restart. Serious updater flaws.

This is the worst program I have ever used!
I gave me dozens of false positives that kaspersky and NOD32 never found.... I rate it zero.

tspcar12

tspcar12 reviewed v10.2 on Nov 10, 2007

I currently use Kaspersky but it doesn't play nice with other security programs like outpost, Spyware doctor or Spybot. Bit defenders gets good reviews in independent testing and leak tests and I find no driver conflicts with this program as opposed to Paspersky or Outpost. As far as Nod32 is concern, it is a good free program but when compared to the ones you have to buy it doesn't fare as well.

I have been using bit defender for three years on my laptop. Norton on my desktop. This program once out of beta is great. I have had only problems uninstalling it. But its always work in the background flawlessly. its so simple to use. You can install it and forget it. It even has advance features so that the expert users can still do what they want.

The GUI isn't the best looking. But its set up in based on features, not the most used tools.

The anitspam filter is great....once setup correctly.

The Antispyware isn't as 'real-time' as it says. But i wouldn't get it for antispyware.

The anti-virus is great...most defualt options are the good ones to choose. It scans all the time...you can choose the priority, maybe thats way you other people thought it was slow, it was maybe set too 'agressive."

It even has most of the time hourly updates.

But overall i give this program a full 5

BitDefender slows down your computer as of all antiviruses. The reason it is a bit slower when loading an application is due to the live scanner, which scans every application you open to ensure you there are no viruses. I do believe that BitDefender 10 has decently improved and the only way for you to know this is for you to try it yourself, it's free during the duration of the beta.

Am I missing something. Everyone raves about Bitdefender and there's no doubt it is effective. But I found it Version 9 slows my computer dramatically when loading programs (2.8Ghz Pentiun 4 and 1Gb RAM) A friend also said the same, that's why I never bought it. Is Version 10 any better on resources? Try loading a program with Bitdender active then disabled and see yourself. Very noticable loading Firefox (which is a slow starter anyway)

This is one of the better virus scanners, for both detection and not real bogging down on the system. I know for a fact its far less taxing on your system than Kaspersky is.

It also has one of the best virus detection rates.

Let me be very honest with you that i thought version:9 suck**!
But this version sports a streamlined UI,lesser amount of prompts from firewall and better mem usage...
anti-virus and firewall still dont have rootkit detection and stealth-mode respectively and also i think abilty to block leaks....
but it will be in-corporated in future coz the beta license indicates date of 1st september...
so probably we still have a long way to go...
But i would say its very stable for beta and you can try it with reasonable satisfaction!!!

This is Tre2004 from before.. I also switched over from NAV to bitdefender.. and I am soooo glad.. I still have 1/2 a year left on my NAV license, bitdefender doesn't take up NEAR as much CPU and computer resources.. And thank you for telling me that if I have a license, and version 10 does come out that I can update to it w/ THAT license.. I will download this version 10 and try it out. I'm sure it will be awesome. I havn't had ONE problem w/ version 9. It found about 10 things that NAV didn't find. I can't believe how cheap it was too.. I also got Webroot spysweeper FREE for 6 months when I purchases this online..

I used to use Norton, but after finding BitDefender I've never looked back. BitDefender even detected some stuff that Norton missed, plus it's faster and uses less system resources. Looking at all the issues Norton has been having lately, I'm very glad I switched over 1.5 years ago.

I've never had any problems with their support staff either. They are usually very helpful. I have found you get faster support if you contact them via their live chat instead email, but that's to be expected since one is live vs waiting for email.

And once you have a license, you get free updates for the term of your license. So if you buy version 9 and then 10 comes out before your license period is up, you get to upgrade for free. I got four three year professoinal licenses and have gone through versions 7, 8, 9, and 10 will be next, each version get better and better :)

I only wish we had BitDefender at work instead of Symantec. My home PC and work PC are pretty similar (P4 2.8GHz, 1GB DDR400 Ram, ASUS motherboads), but my home PC is much faster. Symantec Anti-Virus 10 uses too much system resources and really slows things down :(

I just purchased Bitdefender 9 standard..
Can I update to this for free? Or would I have to purchase it again? I know some programs let you update to new versions when they come out..
Just wondering if anyone knows. i would really appreciate it if someone knows.
Thanx

IT/Admin

I don't know how they stay in business with such poor support. I have waited 2 days for support to answer my email. When I first installed bitdefender it found some nasties but I had to go into the registry and get rid of them my self, and that was after waiting for 3 days and 3 emails for support to answer. The only good I can say is I know I won't waste the companies money the next time on BitDefender Professional Plus with remote management. When you buy cheap that is what you can expect, cheap. If $540.00 is cheap for 18 packages.

Clean, looks a bit like Nav if you're making the transition like i did, works smoothly, and apparently doens't hog up any more memory than nav does, so that's a plus.. the firewall is a nice addon..

Did i already say it's got an intuitive ui? Well it does. And how... just download, install, try & buy! it's well worth while!

Not bad.. But build-in firewall is really a mess. It's not a real firewall, just gives protection from scripts, activex etc. But it gives too much alert! At microsoft.com, you get 20-25 alert (dou you want to store cookie, script bla bla). I'm still looking for a good virus scanner..
