Publisher's Description
CommView is a program for monitoring network activity capable of capturing and analyzing packets on any Ethernet network. It gathers information about data flowing on a LAN and decodes the analyzed data. You can see the list of network connections, vital IP statistics, and examine individual packets. IP packets are decoded down to the lowest layer with full analysis of the main IP protocols: TCP, UDP, and ICMP. Full access to raw data is also provided. Captured packets can be saved to log files for future analysis. A flexible system of filters makes it possible to drop packets you don't need or capture only those packets that you wish to capture.

Ethereal can't hold a candle to CommView. This thing just keeps getting better and better. I've never had a stability issue with CommView on WinXP, which is really saying something, considering all the crapware available in this category. There is a way to configure CommView's CPU usage, so it is very easy to run for extended periods of time. The protocol support is excellent. The rules are powerful and configurable. My only wish at this point is for application-to-network mapping capability, and I am told by TamoSoft that it is forthcoming. Top notch stuff.

Pretty good, although Ethereal is Open Source and Freeware.

Tried to make it crash under Win2k -- no luck. Very stable, even when my box is being port-scanned. Can get a bit slow when you transfer a huge file from one station to another on the LAN, but hey, use filters, the dramatically increase the performance. I've been using this proggie for a few months, and I tried many other sniffers, CommView seems to be the best one out of what I've seen so far. Speaking of "getting slow" or "freezing" stuff -- I guess you either get high performance and no real-time packet display and decode (sniffers like Observer), or you get lower performance and enjoy the real-time display (CommView and SpyNet). I prefer the second type. Also, CommView is the only sniffer that works with W2k dial-up. A plussie for me.

CommView sucks. Would be nice if it actually worked properly. Note that CommView is subject to Denial of Service if someone is probing your ports. Port scanning a system running CommView causes 100% CPU utilization so don't even bother trying to use it to monitor people probing your ports. On NT 4.0 this appears to be unrecoverable.

I love Packets sniffers.. especially watching them in school.. nice proggie.. it's simple, and has some baddass featues.. aah codine getting to be.. one thing.

Hehe, nice way to phrase it :). Anyway, I totally agree that no 'responsible' (as the author says) marketing campaign is going to harvest email address without the respective owner's consent. It should be illegal to spam out mail to people who haven't voluntarily given you their email address, and I hope it is someday. At the very least, I hope it's required that spammers put a standarized header on their messages so that ALL SPAM can easily be killed before it ever reaches the inbox of those who don't want it. On a side note, have you ever noticed that spammers have, on average, a 3rd grade writing level?
