Very nice free explorer. Does everything I need so far. I've been disappointed by Q-Dir (tiny icons and refreshing problems) and Explorer++ (instability). This one has not disappointed me so far. Hope the Dev keeps it going, it could just a tad more improvements.

Just found a bug, or perhaps a bad feature:

The context menu does not show a complete list, eg. "Open with 7zip", "Scan with MalwareBytes", etc. It's a deal killer. The Dev. really should offer an X64 version.

Very nice start. This is one of the few file managers that actually implements shell folders and shell items... which I consider crucial to any Explorer clone.

I only have one or two gripes (text editor isn't integrated enough) and I can't wait for new versions.

While I am not prepared to give up XYplorer (http://fileforum.betanew...l/XYplorer/1011575143/1) just yet, I have to say that this is a fairly impressive little file manager. While not as robust as some of the others on the market (XYplorer, xplorer2, Total Commander and the massive Directory Opus, to name a few), it also certainly can't be accued of being "bloated."

I particularly like the breadcrumb interface, and the nesting of controlbars within the file tab.

Very nice file manager with a few exceptions. When the system is under any relatively high load, this program's responsiveness becomes very poor. Shift+Delete doesn't work for bypassing the recycle bin. Those are my only two big gripes, aside from that it could just use several tweaks to the UI, mainly the way the bookmarks pane works.

what ? the ftp version of windows explorer ?. I much prefer list view in a classic pane than use an explorer window EVER. I could easily have 2, 3, or more folders open & tiled without needing this whatsoever. I use Directory Opus anyways.

The program is coming along nicely.

My main wish is that the tabs could be made semi-permanent, or "lockable" When clicking folders, the tabs change like crazy. Why even have tabs if that's the way they are going to work? It's just as easy to use the folder tree like Windows Explorer as to use tabs that can't be locked.

You can do this in CubicExplorer. You will not get a graphical presentation, but you can see the size of any folder (with subfolders). What you have to do is to download and install a small, free program called Folder Size. You can easily toggle it's function on and off, so there is no need to worry about CE becoming slow. How to use and install is described in detail in the latest Help file for CE (downloadable from homepage).

But, unless I misunderstand - this can be done! You can move the Drive toolbar to anywhere, and you can decide yourself (right click) which icons it should contain (external HDs, network places, My documents...)

In my opinion, CE is just getting better and better. With a new Bookmak toolbar and menu, it is even more easy to use, and the QuickView has been improved. Excellent. And; a major update is ahaed in 0.78 :)

I've been a PowerDesk user for years and have always like it, but thought it could be better. CubicExplorer seems like it has great potential and I'm impressed with what I've seen to-date. One thng I would like to have as an option is to set my default folder when the program opens without having to use the Option to Remember Tabs On Exit. Ths option brings you back to the last folder that was open. I *always* want to open to a specific folder, which happens to be my default download location, and navigate from there. Most times I want to do something in this folder.

Other than that I like the program, so kudos to the programmer; I look forward to future releases.

This version gets 5 because it's the best file manager I've found, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of room for improvement by nitpickers such as myself.

Lots of improvements in this one, though still not *fully* customizable. I can't seem to attach the Up/Refresh buttons to the left of the tab list, and I can't get rid of the Copy/Cut/Paste bar. It'd also be nice if it didn't auto-refresh like a spaz and unload all the icons every time you change folders or perform an operation on a file.

I'd like to have the option to link tabs to the X button on the top-right of the window. This is a fatal flaw IMHO of how all tabbed interfaces work - you can't *quickly* exit a tab.

Another request is the ability to link another program to searches(when the F3 key is pressed). For file searches, there is no better file indexer or searcher than Locate. When searching for an IM log file, CubicExplorer and Windows failed to find it and took quite a while to check my entire computer. Locate took < 0.5s, and found every file possibly related by name to the logfile, including a backup I had accidentally stored on a USB memory stick.

And finally...it'd be great if we could select additional locations/icons for the drives toolbar, rather than needing a bulky bookmarks panel. Think Firefox, not Opera. ;)

Aside from my nitpicks, great work!

yay, it's pretty cool, especially for a freeware.

and just a small answer to forgie who says "one thing i'd like to see added is the ability to view the size of subdirectories"

> this wouldn't be a good idea : this sort of operation takes a -LOT- of time. Because unless operating from a completely DB-ed filesystem (and FAT/NTFS is not), the proggie would have to recursively parse directories to calculate their size. In fact, it has been added as an option in some similar software and it makes browsing just unusable.
If you want an idea of how time-consuming the process is, look at the great WinDirStat (which is actually very fast): http://windirstat.sourceforge.net/

This review is written 28.01.06, and is based on version 0.74 of CubicExplorer.
If you want to use another file manager/browser software than Windows Explorer, this is definitely the one you should switch to. If you have never given it a thought, you still should switch to CubicExplorer!!

FUNCTIONS: CubicExplorer uses an Opera-like tabbed browsing, so that you can keep multiple folders open at the same time, in different tabs. This makes it SO much easier to compare folders and to cut, copy and past - for example you can drag files from one tab to another, simple and efficiently. To open, close and switch betwwen tabs is extremely easy and convenient. CE
includes a built-in text editor, and an ingenious function; bookmarks! You can add your favourite folders to categories of bookmarks in a seperate window, so that you can get to your favorite folders fast. Saves you a lot of time!!(A similar
possibility to bookmark favourite files seems to be ready soon, and in best case it could have some similarities to virtual folders!!)

As mentioned, CE has a seperate window for Bookmarks, and a seperate window for treeview. The windows can be moved and spaced to suit the way you work. All in all, the interface is very clear and appealing, the toolbars are nice and intuitive and aren't cluttering the view space. Also, all the toolbars and windows can be closed or opened very easily. In addition to the functions that Windows Explorer DOESN'T have, CubicExplorer has most of the functions WE does have; thumbnails, file search, detailed view, a.o.

UPDATES AND FORUM: Read carefully, because this is one of the main reasons why you should use this program. The author shows a complete and rare dedication to this program. Updates seem to be frequent! The forum is still small, but one of the best I have ever seen: You can expect immediate answers to your questions, comments and requests!! The forum also comes with a Bug/Request section where you can follow the work of the author; how far he has come in fixing mentioned bugs and requests, and a time schedule for new functions, for fixes and for new releases. This function is excellent, it makes it much more inspiring both to use the program and to give feedback to the author; you can immediately see that they are taken seriously!

BUGS and PROBLEMS: First of all; you can probably disregard bugs mentioned in earlier reviews, they all seem to be fixed. True; there are some bugs and shortcomings left. The search function is fast, but more limited than in W.E., the program is still a little bit too big, and a little bit too slow sometimes. Due to it's functions, though, you'll still save time using this compared to Windows Explorer!! You shouldn't worry too much about the small (!!) shortcomings, because of what is said above about the updates and the forum. Also, they don't interfere much at all with your work and you can expect them to be gone soon!

FREEWARE / SOFTWARE: The program is completely freeware, with absolutely no limitations. As far as I can see there are no indications that this might change!

LANGUAGES: Only English and Finnish so far, but the author has released the language files and several users have volunteered to translate the program. Several languages should be ready soon, and if you don't find yours, you just translate it yourself :)

SKINS: The program comes with just a few skins. They are very clear and comfortable to look at, though, so unless you want your computer to look "special", it's more than enough!

CONCLUSION: This has very fast become one of my favourite programs! It works already extremely well, and due to the forum and feedback functions, I really feel part of a project! I have made CE my standard file manager, I haven't missed Windows
Explorer for a second, and it just seems to get better, fast!! Really, you should change!!! :)

!! In spite of the panegyrical review, this writer is not in any way affiliated with the author of CE!

nice.

the "bug" was fixed. Greatly appreciated.

As it is, it can hold out on its own. An improvement or two is a welcome addition, but the current build is workable enough.

And i can't seem to rename the categories... oh well.

forget about that, i can manually edit it in the .ini configuration. as noted by Zero3k

I'll have to thank that person later.

I like this one a lot. Would like to see option to view dual or triple pane versus tabs, and option to keep branches expanded while navigating the tree control. Overall, the app is a little slow when doing file management, especially across the network. Also, bugs crop up if you are running RJH Extensions. Lastly, double-click on a zip file, a window opens, and displays nothing. Is it supposed to? Don't know.

Lisa Hayes

Lisa Hayes reviewed v0.72 Beta on Jan 9, 2006

very nice alternative.

the toolbars aren't cluttering the view space, which is sometimes important to make the viewer pleasant to work. Most of the common tasks that i've been used to doing, are all present and accounted for, though i did not see a delete button, and there is currently no method of adding one.

It's a welcome addition. Even though i still have been looking for an alternative file explorer that can display the files in tile mode (open windows file explorer, change view to tiles. That's what i mean)

One small thing. In the toolbars. I am not fond of the drives toolbar so i set it off. However, when the program is restarted, there is still a noticeable space visible.

open cubicexplorer.
uncheck the drives in the toolbars menu.
close the program.
restart the program.
There is a visible space remaining even though the drives have been disabled in the toolbars menu.

Wow, that actually looks really spiffy! Only thing that would be better is Firefox style interface adjusting. Yeah...I'm crazy, I'd actually like a Gecko-based file manager. :P

No floppy problems here....but then again, I don't have a floppy drive or floppy drive controller.

^^^By the top comment I mean that I want a way to remove the address bar and copy button since it's displayed in the title bar anyway...
