Another great alternative is JSCAPE AnyClient--AnyClient is a free, platform independent file transfer application that supports all major file transfer protocols including FTP/S, SFTP, WebDAV/S and Amazon S3. AnyClient is available both as a web based ftp client requiring no software installation, and as a downloadable application that you can install locally.

In dealing with flaky bandwidth (I am in China), CuteFTP is the only FTP client that will reliably transfer files to my web server. Others try, but fail. CuteFTP is the only client that can accurately sync to my web server. Others always want to upload unchanged files.

Tried all the free tools, tried WS_FTP. CuteFTP gets the job done for me under difficult conditions, and with little attention.

For downloading, all are pretty good. For uploads, this is the best I've found.

CuteFTP is a slick program and extremely simple to use right off the bat. It just works, period.

However, it's missing many of the features of FlashFXP.

Also, before purchasing this software (it's shareware), check out freeware alternatives such as Filezilla or SmartFTP. They're not as polished but they're free!

I have two FTP programs in my machine:SmartPTP for quick uploads and CuteFTP-Pro for the other related FTP transfers ( back-up,sincronize, on the fly editing, thumbnails preview, etc. )The more I use Cute FTP, the less I use SmartFTP, ot because SFTP is bad program - on the contrary . but because it lacks some useful features Cute has. Very stable, user friendly, feature rich, this is a must have for people that deal on an daily basis with web site transfers and updating.I've tried a lot of other - WS_FTPPro,WEbdrive, etc - but at the end,CuteFTPPro wins them all.In my opinion and as a everyday user.Highly recommended

I've been using CuteFTP for years, but now I'm fed up with it. This is why:
1. Download speed, estimated time aren't calculated correctly after several mins into the download. They're either unknown or some hilariously incorrect value (like 200kB/s on a 384kbps ADSL) appears.
2. If my ADSL reconnects, downloads aren't resumed, and download queue order is messed up!
3. Although the Transfer Engine can display the status of the d/l tasks and you can start/stop an individual task, one can't change the order of the items (the full CuteFTP Interface needs to be started to do that).
4. Biggest flaw: the browser connection to a site isn't handled differently from download connections. If, for example, 1 conn/site is allowed and you start d/ling 2 files then your browser window gets disabled, since the 1 allowed connection is used up for the 1st d/l. Say, you increase the # of allowed conns, to 2. Still you cannot browse, since the 2nd task in the queue will start up and eat your connection. How stupid is that?
5.I thought exporting sites would be useful to facilitate the transfer of settings between separate installations. But because the passwords are '*'ed out, one has to remember and enter them again, which makes the transport process much more cumbersome.

After trying several clients (this, FileZilla, FlashFXP, SmartFTP) I switched to SmartFTP for everyday transfers, although I still keep CuteFTP around for its more advanced features (like HTTP(S),SFTP transfers).

I'll miss using CuteFTP. Version 6.0 has become bloatware. I'm not sure if it is sloppy coding. The program is sluggish. I sometimes get the popup warning that "the user interface is loading" when I start the program. I'm using a P4 2.8C with 1GB of RAM. Sheesh! It is sluggish when navigating between directories. You can no longer choose to list folders and files separately. It seems like this is the way Globalscape products have been moving. CuteHTML 5.0 Pro is also a sluggish turtle. Sad to say goodbye to CuteFTP Pro, a program I've been using for years.

WRFan

WRFan reviewed v3.1 on Feb 20, 2003

second best programme on the market. ws_ftp 7 is more userfriendly, but apart from that both programmes do their job very well. however, I think cuteftp doesn't have the ability to catch ftp links you click in internet explorer. at least I haven't seen it. in ws_ftp such a function exists and it's very comfortable, because an ftp programme can deal with ftps much better than IE.

Well the final release is out even though it's not ben announced on Betanews and I'm gld to say that even more bugs have been fixed - some that were outstanding from version 2.

As far as I know CuteFTP only contacts Globalscape during the trial period to display a mini web page. This doesn't display once registration details are entered. Perhaps the person who *says* it's spyware ought to say why they think it's so.

Good work Globalscape, if only some of the bugs or enhancements had been included in version 2, we waited a year for them. An interim bug fix release might have been a good idea.

As I understand it, CuteFTP is spyware, according to Camtech's Spy Chaser. Is the Pro version spyware too? If so, I shouldn't think it would be suitable for business use.

paul-white

paul-white reviewed v3.0 Beta on Oct 13, 2002

I managed to install Beta 3 on my spare PC but it wouldn't run on my main PC. I kept getting a message to say the the executable was corrupt. I re-installed and repaired the installation about 10 ten times then gave up.

Going back to my spare PC, I found that all the bugs that I reported to Globalscape after the release of 2.0 have been fixed but there doesn't seem to be enough new features or design changes for the version number to go from 2.0 to 3.0. Perhaps that's been done to enable them to charge an upgrade fee.

I now realise that there are much better programs out there and have put the executable in the Recycle bin. The original CuteFTP was a joy to use even though it was rather basic. CuteFTP Pro has some interesting features but it just seems clumsy and the interface messy.

I have been testing most of the ftp clients avaliable and tihs is the only one that lets have more then 1 connection to the same server and multi sessions at the same time. sure it is not the most user friendly client there is but no doubt it is the most versatile one.

Dirk van Hoofen

Dirk van Hoofen reviewed v3.0 Beta on Oct 10, 2002

If I have tested this program an use a Registry Cleaner, CuteFTP pro means, it was damaged or infected with a VIRUS.

I must re-install it - thats a stupid function!

The version 2.0 work correctly, but this new version is very defensive for a work.

They sure do burn through version numbers fast! What happened to more 2.x? I don't think they get it at all.

Anyway, after experiencing the previous 2, I'm not even touching a BETA of 3! I agree with most others - FlashFXP is very nice. It's somehow related to LeapFTP, my old standard.... unfortunately SOCKS suppports has been the death of every client I've seen minus one: AbsoluteFTP. It's the only freakin client that manages to do Socks5 without PASV mode... and does it right! FlashFXP dev's don't even seem to get that there's cheesy little home apps like WinGate, and then real corporate SOCKS servers that 100's of users have to tunnel through. Ah well. If they can fix that one problem, I'm moving to FlashFXP also. Cute just doesn't understand what it means to be "Pro"... though maybe they'll get it right this time. SSH is promising, but if they F it up, there's no point.

Tux0Racer

Tux0Racer reviewed v3.0 Beta on Oct 9, 2002

It's a nice app. The only reason I use this over other FTP apps such as FlashFXP is due to the fact that this is one of the only FTP clients I've been able to find for Windows that supports SSH. You need to connect via SSH to upload files to a sourceforge hosted site.

Doubledoom

Doubledoom reviewed v2.0 Beta 3 on Nov 18, 2001

CuteFTP Pro V1 looked good but was flawed in quite a few areas. The main failure was the delay timer when downloading multiple files from one site when it was busy (you could set a 60 second delay but it wouldn't obey it). CuteFTP V2 Beta has fixed this problem and improved the threading options. Still no support for hidden files/dirs and there is a bug on the resume/skip/overwrite settings which can lead to overwriting even if skip is selected. If they can iron out these bugs i would give it 4. If they added hidden dir/file support, i would give it 5

Thanks for all you've done. In the next version there will be an import function from csv and column text file and if i have time an import/export from xml file. Yes i've to correct some bug if you can try to understand what was the setting you was saving when it crashed i can try to simulate the crash and resolve it...
About the reboot i think it's because it has to install some runtime dll that could be in use when you installed it.
Also win2k ask you to reboot if he has to substitute some dll and the installation is done via the Microsoft Installer (so the runtime dll are merge module as required from the last microsoft rules :). About the link i will do what is possible but you can also set it as the default action when you double click on the item.
If you can suggest a server that don't put ads on and is free i will try to put the software there/do a mirror.
Thanks for your comments.

I've been using cuteftp for years, until recently I started to get sick of it. I found a couple that work well, easy and quick to use, and have advanced features. BulletProof ftp, and FlashFXP. These 2 programs also have come a long way, and if you're sick of using cuteftp, then give these programs a try. If you're into the whole PASV mode thing, then stick with FlashFXP, otherwise use BulletProof.

I have a 98SE with 160 mb RAM. Normally, the OS uses 139 mb. But one of my graphics programs needs 50% free RAM to load. My memory manager will give me up to 71% without clicking anything off. I don't know any other way to free up this mem so easily.

It is a good FTP client, one MAJOR problem. The lack of the ability to manually change between ascii/binary transfer modes. The ONLY way is to add extensions in the preferences for ascii upload... but that doesnt work if a file has no extension!

IE, like it or loathe it, is 80% of the market now and it's the future of the web. Netscape 4.7213299393-whatever, it's pure garbage made by a company that time has left behind.

nice FTP client but...

from the new notes.txt:
'Site Manager access can be password protected using an extremely sophisticated encryption algorithm.'

try this (backup your smdata.bak first): set your password on your site manager to: 12345
then quit CuteFTP and then restart, it asks for your pass and enter 12345...and voila, it doesn't work!! man if they mean an extremely sophisticated algo i guess they really meant it!..hehe

so if you used 12345 your whole database is screwed
but then again nobody is so stupid as me to use 12345 ;)
