Publisher's Description

DAEMON Tools converts your computer CD/DVD discs into "virtual discs" or so called "disc image" files, which run directly on your hard drive. This protects original CD/DVD discs from loss, theft, and damage, plus a virtual disc has much better access rates than a physical CD/DVD disc in a physical CD/DVD ROM drive because the reading speed of a virtual CD/DVD-ROM is dozen times faster compared to normal CD/DVD drive.

Smart, free and popular product which is ideal for mounting CD/DVD/HDD drives and making common disc images.

Junkware....

Still probably the best tool of its kind. Unfortunately it contains non-optional spyware which some A/Vs identify as containing a trojan (it installs secondary backdoor programs). Sadly, the authors of Daemon Tools have become increasingly shady over the past couple years. Considering there are now viable free alternatives I'm forced to suggest staying away from Daemon Tools.

One of the best program for mounting images. Its always worked well for me when mounting movie images. I did have a mystery phantom drive appearing that couldn't be un-installed until I restarted my computer. The program hasn't happened again, but it could be a problem with the virtual driver. Anyway Thanks.

Thats right! You can easily deselect the adware component of Daemon-tools, they're not trying to hide anything! The adware helps pay for the development and upkeep of the free version. Freeware is good in practice, but its very annoying when the main developer decides not to spend any more time on it and it ends up not being updated anymore. This has happened to so many programmes its not funny, at least if there is some income involved for the developer they will be willing to keep updating it!

I find daemon-tools to be the best of the lot, its just so easy to use and you don't even realise it is running. When rating programmes I wish people would:
- Not rate something without testing it
- Read things carefully when installing and setting up (important for daemon-tools for example)
- Not rate something and comment on it poorly simply because you are against it (such as Nvidia fanboi's always dissing ATI, as the Nvidia driver never has ever BSOD'd has it?)
- Be realistic, fair, and reasonable
- Just because you use another programme and have done so for a long time, doesn't automatically make it better.

Most people do the right thing, but some just stand out as plain stupid!

Never did hear from them. I when ahead and installed it and it requires a checkup on the activation. It tries going out over the internet and it came up and said that if it doesn't get out soon, the program will stop working. What a waste of money. I don't mind paying for good programs but in a case like this. It is time for a change.

us3r

us3r reviewed v4.30.0 on Jul 18, 2008

It still installs spyware search engine, the so called 'Daemon Tools panel', but now you can disable it so that Daemon Tools act like the good old version. Also, I would block Daemon Tools on firewall and HIPS if I were you. Sadly this program doesn't really have any competition, counting free versions only. The Virtual Clone Drive recommended by so many people is so inconvenient and supports few images formats that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Stick to version 4.10 of Daemon Tools or give this one a shot. It's definitely better than 4.12.x.

excellent program, and the work and effort that has gone into this program over the years is astounding,

and to still give away there lite version for free alowing even the very latest copy protections to be beat/bypassed is beyond belief, i can not imagine the work and massive research the team has to do to keep track of new protection system constantly being updated and developed is a undertaken beyond words,

this program is the best, and i can understand why a pro version is now being pushed, after the work they have put into this product, it would only be fair for them to get something back, people's lives are changing all the time, and cost of living is something we all have to face with at some point, and as much as many would like to develop something for nothing, this does not eliminate the costs in life, i hope they can make enough so they can continue there great work on a great product, nothing worse when you here someone is leaving the development team because they have to find work to live,

time for my one and only gripe,

Vide for windows x64 pro STILL not supported and yet Windows Vista x64 edition has been supported for a while now, i feel that in itself is not fair, but that is the only gripe i have, the second gripe would of been adware, however this can be turned of when installing so this is not a problem.

Yes, you have to avoid "SponsorWare" but you know who's paying for it, and the install can be a little tricky with the reboot and the SCSI install, but Dude, they make it in X64.

DAEMON tools used to be the best, but competition quickly caught up and overtook it. I don't need all the extra stuff that DAEMON Tools packs. @debonair - Daemon Tools Lite include WhenU Save adware crap, but it's shown pretty obvious at the first install screen, that you can install it without it. That's the "Daemon Tools Search Bar" thing, that is completely useless. If you don't let the installer install this crap, the program is perfect and adware free.

The program itself is easy to use for mounting iso images. I wish it was possible to do it in a more persistant manner, because it's quite slow to access, then reaccess a little bit later.

However, the major drag is the adware which really causes trouble. In fact, I've tried spyware removers aplenty, and nothing can remove, and only windows defender seems to detect. sucks

Quote: tinkerdill "contains whenusave spyware"

- tinkerdill, technically, it can't be called as Spyware. According to the definition, spyware is something that gets installed WITHOUT your concent, in the background, automatically.

Daemon Tools gives you a proper screen with simple, non-confusing text, saying that you don't have to install it. When its asking you for permission, how can you call it spyware?

burfadel

burfadel reviewed v4.09.1 on Apr 18, 2007

The adware pays for the programmers to actually programme the programme...! lol, and also pays for hosting the site etc. As it gives you the option like many have said, to not install the adware component then the simple answer is, if you don't want it don't click it!

There are plenty of programmes that you pay for that have one form or another of adware in them. Nero has the ask toolbar for example, which isn't adware per se, but in effect it is because if you use it, the results that come back from it have ads on the page!

This is a top programme and all those who complain about the programmers trying to cover the cost of keeping it fresh, up to date, have full support and pay for the hosting, maybe they'll much prefer paying $40 or so on buying it instead, or they can pay much more for the alternatives.

when-u is a nasty piece of spyware. I have used this program for years, and, until now, have always had respect for it. When-U can bugger up the system really good. ToolBarCop shows a new toolbar that tries to install when-u when you open a browser. Delete the daemon-tools-when-u-installer folder and then remove the toolbar entry.

I must say that I used to love daemon tools, it was the best virutal cd emulator. But with the new version upgrade, I have switched indefinately to Alcohol 120%. The new version is bloated and buggy, and upon installing it on an system running xp pro with sp2 installed - it causes major problems. Daemeon messed up my computer severely causing horrible hardware/driver conflicts, which could only be resolved with a clean format and re-install of xp. It's sad because daemeon used to be really good and lightweight, and now it's just bloated and the new version is notorious for messing up computers (check out their forum to see the gravity of the issue).

DAEMON Tools kicks butt. The authors are allowed to make a little scratch for their efforts. The key thing is that the adware is OPTIONAL is there is full diclosure that it's there. They didn't make the mistake like the autoGK folks when they snuck it into the install in a pretty covert way (it's gone now, btw).

Your all idiots for giving this program low scores just for the OPTIONAL Adware. You think these guys code this stuff just to have their wallets drained by leachers that dont donate or anything for using this? The devs deserve something for putting the time into Daemon Tools. Peroid.

Who cares if a few idiots don't see the huge checkbox that asks if you want to install the Adware.

To get rid of that "Product not installed" message box, delete the old install directory. For some reason running the uninstaller doesn't delete any of the program files or remove their startup entries. Once you've deleted those files then you can clean the registry and it will remove the startup entry which is no longer valid. Also, you may need to remove the old drive from the device manager before it lets you delete the files.

My computer is a 800 MHz AMD Athlon (yes, I'll upgrade soon) and I noticed a huge performance improvement. Only reason this app won't get a five point rating from me is that I'm getting this annoying "Product not installed!" messagebox every time I start Windows even though I uninstalled DAEMON Tools 3.42, ran a registry sweep, and removed the old virtual device via Windows Disk Management.

Don Juan: Thank you, I'll try it as soon as possible. Just hope DAEMON Tools 4.00 has a better uninstaller :)

Grow up stisev. You can choose to NOT install the adware. I love D-Tools, its a great tool. However, I was slightly uncomfortable with the implementation of adware, but for a tool as well put together as this, I might consider letting it install the toolbar. If you don't like that idea, then shut up and stick with the previous release. Isn't having it free with adware better than releasing a shareware version that times out in 15 days? You know the answer to that question. Great program!

I had Daemon Tools 3.46 and it caused my Windows to crash and lose access to it's CD ROM drives when I tried to uninstall it to install the newer version as was advised by the forum on the Daemon Tools homepage. I reinstalled 3.46 and installed 3.47, hopefully to overwrite the prior version, and it left a phantom drive from the prior version that showed up in Explorer but would crash Windows when clicked. I have been unsuccessful in uninstalling the program so I would advise you to create a restore point BEFORE installing if you later want to remove it for some reason. The program does work as advertised though and I like it a lot. It appears I'm destined to using 3.46 since I got it to work again and still can't figure out how to get rid of it to install 3.47. I've tried all of the tricks they show on their website and what I could find from doing a Google search but to no avail. I also know of several other people with the same problem. Just be prepared for a lifelong commitment with this program and your PC once it's installed!
