Dajukebox has a differnt way of cataloging and displaying your music library from WinAmp, JetAudio, Monkey's Audio, etc.. I am glad to see someone take a whole new approach. The author's website has video help files and seems to me to be pretty complete. It will take a while for the controls to become natural but at this point I think it's great. I'd say give it a try. It's free so nothing to lose here.

I am very curious about a few things regarding this software. My first concern was the complete lack of a simple FAQ and the very much essential help file detailing the functions. There is not any attached to this software. It tries to connect to a website to view the help file. I am not usually the one to complain but I cannot find any documentation about the ability to utilize the VST plugin functions. I want to run my MP3s through a few equalizer and compression VSTs but none seem to work at all. If they dont work then whats the point of having that sort of functionality in the first place? Also, I am not giving you points for being honest.Your honesty shows in your programming.

Can't even drag and drop files to add to the library in the default config? That blows. Standard mouse cursor changes are also missing. When you move the mouse above the "resize pane" line, it does not give any visual feedback to let you know if you have selected it properly.

It would be great if you could easily find a way to choose "Go find album art" or "Go find lyrics", say a context sensitive menu option. It is not at all intuitive and it certainly lacks conformity with established standards for GUI functionality. Lame. Not all columns are resizeable and the desktop icon installed without any text label at all. Not cool.

It feels like it's just not ready for prime-time.

I don't know if we really need another media player as we are already flooded with too many choices. Each one claims to be the best but what I like about Soundbase is that the developer admits he does not have the whole solution to your media needs. Soundbase also does not require any registry changes or additions and I'm all for that. Tough to beat VLC player by anybody but I give it a 5 for honesty and effort.

Hi Radiomaffia,

I am the programmer of soundbase, and I am wondering the same thing to be honest, believe me if I say that the 1-star ratings did get my attention! I actually develop on XP, test on win7 and XP (different machines) and then release if it runs on my personal media center (XP). I don't do vista, assuming it is similar to win7... As such, I guess I am my bigest user... I also have a few (not to many unfortunally) testusers, they also do not seem to have this problem. But I am more then keen to get user feedback on this... so any help is appriciated! Mail me or go to the forum on the website. tnx!

I guess the issue of loading is solved.

Still have some problems with the tumbnail view myself,
but it still is a lot better then most of the other taggers and
organisers, so a solid 5 star from me.

Anyway ...kudos to these guys for a good program.... couldn't find much to complain about so I gave it a "4". Even though I will probably continue to use other options I still dloaded it and messed with it and ay go to it from time to time.

Just to ensure everybody understands how soundbase works compared to other players. Soundbase doesnot use any DLLs, nor does it in itself play audio. The only thing it does is send files to the DirectX layer, the same layer used by windows media player, and a whole bunch of other players. So soundbase sounds as good as your DirectX setup does. If your codec on your PC is crap, then any DirectX player on your PC sounds crappy (or in case of video looks crappy). As this can be prevented by having a DLL, soundbase offers the alternative of using BASS drivers, a set of DLLs that provide, similar to, and partly using the DirectX layer. Now anyone claiming that either windows media player or BASS gives a bad sound quality, hmmmm. I dont know ....

Eric.de.Heer

Eric.de.Heer reviewed v2008.3.28 on Mar 29, 2008

Hi Grinch89, you are missing out on a great opertunity here, soundbase uses both the DirectX codec as well as it can use BASS, both offer high quality playback! Of course if you do use DirectX then it is your own responsibility to ensure that you have the best directx codec installed! The websites forum gives you plenty of info on good codec, or if you want to use BASS, just go into Soundbase options - player page and press the install BASS button. You would be the first to complain on BASS's sound quality for sure!

We can keep this up Grinch, I really don't think that an app this good, deserves only 2 stars!! For me 2 stars is like close to crap?! Again, Soundbase delivers top quality sound, either by BASS, either by a good codec! Now I am not saying that everyone should just rate this 5 stars, but some reasoning in an overall rating might be appropriate!

grinch89

grinch89 reviewed v2008.3.28 on Mar 29, 2008

Eric.de.Heer : Now I don't complain unless I have a good reason to do so,and Soundbase gave me reason
to question the quality of the sound that was coming out of my speakers,it is not the first app to do that ,and I am sure it will not be the last.In side by side testing of these 2 apps,Music Jukebox displayed superior sound quality, period.I have been involved in music in one form or another, both in the making and reproduction of music.I know superior sound when I hear it.I did not say that SoundBase was not a good program,I simply stated that I did not care for the quality of sound.

pforbes

pforbes reviewed v2008.01.01 on Jan 2, 2008

I like it, but I keep using the old Musicmatch Jukebox even when it is not supported any more. BTW Soundbase doesn't work on "All" systems. If you use i.e. Windows 98 SE it loads normally and afterwards it goes on running at the background, but disappears from your screen with no notice at all.

"you should just enter it in the tag that way" NOT.
Like hell I'm going to tag stuff incorrectly just because the visual organizer can't, or properly, won't. And it WAS slow and resource hungry.
It DID get the folder art confused and or refuse to see it after 'testing'.
wxMusik works better, faster, properly alphebetizes "the", and never got the art wrong.
fanboy reviews are great when the software is too

RickYZ

RickYZ reviewed v2007.08.01 on Aug 8, 2007

Hi All,

I don't think that the last two reviews are very fair, so let me give you some other views on this application.

It is focused on accessing a larger album collection by album, but allows filters of all kinds, and has a folder browser. Soundbase allows to gather images from 5 automated locations, but allows for full drag and drop from any webbrowser/explorer or the internal explorer. The reason for not including google/images is that this DOES NOT allow a unique identification of an image. If you want to add an image then browse there (or any other location) and just drag and drop.

On the mentioned flaws, if you want you artist catogorised without the "THE", then you should just enter it in the tag that way. I like it with "THE", it is part of the Artists name, it is "The beatles" not "Beatles, The". Besides, where is the end, the word THE in english, DIE in german, DE in dutch, eeeh not sure what the rest of the world is using, but I am sure there are just a little too many...

On the resource hungry comment, that is brave to say on an app that plays uses less then 1% CPU on my 2.4Gig system? And memory usage depends on how many albums you load into your database, it is normally about 50k per record inclusive a buffer album image, so a 5000 album database would be about 250mb. Not bad for all tag information and an image.

Not sure about losing ART either, I have never encountered this myself, but you might want to post this to the forum so the programmer can have a look at the specific conditions, so far he has been helping out on any error that was posted. But again, I have never lost an image so far. Anything that you delete from SB ends up in the recycle bin anyway. If you read the forum there is some mentioning of album art that is corrupted.

So my personal opinion is that this app rocks, it is the best tagger, organizer, album art collector in one GO, and it plays without having to have another 10 DLL's, just plain and simple on executable. If I could give 6 stars it would get it!

Has potential but needs work
Needs images.google search as well..
FLAWS: groups with "The" at the beginning are alphabetized so. Please fix this.
If open, you cannot choose a song from win explorer.
Seems like it either confuses art or actually deletes it. not good
Resource hungry and rather slow.

too bad as it is good for the art, except I don't have time to lose any

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v2007.05.01 on Apr 26, 2007

Should have called this "Album Art Grabber" as you can force it to search 5 different sources & it drops the jpg's to the appropriate folder.
To view by artist just click the tab in album view.
One nice thing is the tagger as it is the first I've seen that actually makes sense.
I still prefer wxMusik for it's simplicity, & ease of use, as well it's open sourcefullness.
I will probably keep it until I have as much art as it can grab & THEN uninstall it.

This program is great. Just what I have been looking for. A nice clean interface, easily and neatly categorizes my music collection, allows me to edit the ID3 tags of my songs, and the ability to export my collection to an HTML document. The exported file could be better formated with alternating colored table rows to make the list easier to read (especially for those mega collections) but all in all I would say it's way ahead of a lot of the other similar programs out there.
