Damn Small Linux (DSL) 2024 has been reborn as a compact Linux distribution tailored for low-spec x86 computers. It packs a lot of applications into a small package. All the applications are chosen for their functionality, small size, and low dependencies. DSL 2024 also has many text-based applications that make it handy to use in a term window or TTY.
DSL 2024 currently only ships with two window managers: Fluxbox and JWM. Both are lightweight, fairly intuitive, and easy to use. DSL has three X-based web browsers, office applications, multimedia applications, FTP / SFTP / SCP application, and notepad-type editor. There are three GUI-based games picked because they are fun and relatively light. DSL 2024 is also loaded up with a whole bunch of handy term-based applications.
Why make a new DSL after all these years? Creating the original DSL, a versatile 50MB distribution, was a lot of fun and one of the things I am most proud of as a personal accomplishment. However, as a concept, it was in the right place at the right time, and the computer industry has changed a lot since then. While it would be possible to make a bootable Xwindows 50MB distribution today, it would be missing many drivers and have only a handful of very rudimentary applications. People would find such a distribution a fun toy or something to build upon, but it would not be usable for the average computer user out of the gate.
Meanwhile, in 2024, nearly everyone has abandoned the sub-700MB size limit to run on computers old enough to not have a DVD and cannot boot off of a USB drive. This is completely understandable because applications, the kernel, and drivers have all mushroomed in their space requirements. Hats off to Puppy Linux for staying one of the few that still offer a full desktop environment in a small size.
The new goal of DSL is to pack as much usable desktop distribution into an image small enough to fit on a single CD, or a hard limit of 700MB. This project is meant to service older computers and have them continue to be useful far into the future. Such a notion sits well with my values. I think of this project as my way of keeping otherwise usable hardware out of landfills.

I have an old Micron 133 mhz laptop that runs DSL quite nicely. I would install a different/bigger distro 'o Linux on a newer/bigger computer but I hate to part with the old Micron. DSL works well on such a small hard drive and under powered CPU.

I also hope FF3 makes it in MUCH quicker than FF2 did. This is a great little distro for certain tasks. The boxed browser approach reidyn mentioned is a great example. I use it on an old Compaq Evo nc600 laptop w/512MB RAM to loop an mp3 collection to the Music on Hold port on the phone switch where I work. I bet I haven't even opened the latch and looked at that screen in over 6 months. Perfect!

Let me offer another good use for this, aside from keeping it small enough to install on a business card sized CD (for wallet or s*** pocket, hence 50MB limit) or tiny memory stick. I use it in a VM inside Windows (runs great in the free VirtualBox) for totally sandboxed web browsing.
The fact that the VM software itself adds relatively little overhead means that this whole distro plus its stripped Firefox 2.0 can run on my 1GB XP system alongside my other apps and only take less than 100MB, which is far less than any other distro and right at what FF2 for Windows ordinarily takes on its own. Add VirtualBox's seamless window mode, and I have a totally sandboxed browser right alongside my other stuff. For casual browsing (or venturing into the dark alleys of the web) you can't do much better for protecting your system. Presumably, you're doing banking or other commerce on that same system, and fewer ways for the bad guys to compromise your system is good. Doing that with such low overhead is even better.
I'm knocking one point ONLY because they're slow about getting the latest browsers stripped and rolled into the works. FF2 was JUST added as a replacement for FF1, and this is right when the more memory efficient FF3 is available. I do understand that FF3 wasn't final while this DamSmall build was in the works, but: (1) The FF3 betas have been very stable since beta 3 or so, and (2) They JUST GOT FF2 in.... and that's a LONG FREAKING TIME since it came out.
I do NOT recommend this distro for your day to day use, but for keeping a fully working distro on a bootable mini-CD (or business card CD) or memory stick for personal use on other peoples' systems, or for running in a virtual machine, this can't really be beat. If it can, I'd love to hear about it.

DSL is perfect for what is intended. There is DLS-N if you want more functionality and add-ons, or other small Linux distros. For all preferring fancy stuff there is Ubuntu and similar distros. But I do agree that it shouldn't keep up to 50 MB limit if that is against functionality

I have to give this a 1. I am a Linux fan and having experienced 4-5 distros (Ubuntu, Red Hat, Puppy Linux, DSL, etc.), I must say this is the worst. Certainly the 50Mb size is impressive, but in today's world, this is an artificially created constraint which probably is detrimental to functionality. Can you imagine using DOS or Windows 3.1 because MS decided to keep Windows to less than 500Mb?
I give DSL points for being fast and efficient, but little else. While I can razzle dazzle my way around the command line, I think that a good GUI is just as important. Why would I want to memorize 100 command line options for the isolated rare task when it can be done easily through a GUI? And DSL has one that only a mother could love. Even for USB drive purposes, my experience with Puppy is just so much better (both installation and usage) and the functionality for troubleshooting and diagnostic is incredible. For desktop purposes, Ubuntu is killing the rest of the Linux competition.
If all linux looks like DSL, there is no way it will ever compete with the WinMac duopoly. By all means, go ahead if you REALLY want to use your first-generation Pentium from another lifetime ago with 256Mb RAM. For me, it's just not worth it.

This may be more suited for people who would rather use their disk space for other data. A $5 (128Meg) memory stick with an entire operating system, for example, will still have roughly 75 megs left for spreadsheets etc.
For KDE users, like myself, you might prefer:
SLAX http://www.slax.org
(roughly 200megs)
NIMBLEX http://www.nimblex.net
(100 & 200 meg flavors)
It will take some time to get used to the modules concept though. But both have bootable CD and thumb drive versions.

As much as i want to love this, the author could use some more MBs if needed to make it less visually HARASSING (it's not enough to say it's ugly). Not that i like eye candy, but really the interface makes it really hard to stand. It's grotesque.
Come on, forget the autoimposed superlimiting 50, go up to 100 and also take the chance to make it more capable. It is starving asi it is. Do you think that specifically year 2008 (or even 1998 hardware) & 100MB can't be more than friends??
Why so limiting size that it permits only super-small, barely capable apps??
Is the "50MB fun" more important than a more capable project??
Is it so hard to see the advantages of doubling that limit??
Did you know that 4GB pen drives are $18??

The fact that this distro runs sweet, with a full featured GUI, on a Laptop running a Pentium 75mhz CPU with 24MB of EDO RAM on a 500MB Hard Drive (taking up about 20% of the drive) is testament to how well an OS can run if coded efficiently :)

which she tricked out with Firefox, Thunderbird, Abiword and a bunch of other stuff bringing her DSL install to near 100 MB. I come over to her appartment on Boxing Day and see she is using her pen drive, so I ask "Is Windows acting up on you?" She replies: "Oh, I don't use that sh*t anymore." This is my 78 year old mom saying that. Man, I laughed so hard and then I installed Debian on her hard drive. DSL may not be perfect but it is a great intro to Linux and it got my mommy off of Windows. Gotta like that.

I love how small it is, but the hardware support just isn't there. I'm downloading Knoppix right now to see if its wireless is more effective. I have a LinkSys WMP54Gv1 PCI Wireless G Adapter (Extremely common) and it didn't work with DSL 4.1. I certainly don't care about all the software larger distributions come with, but I want moderate hardware support.

For now I would stick with DSL 3.4.1 Embedded for the USB bootable version, and wait until they release the embedded version for this one. I have my USB drive set as bootable with 3.4.1 right now, and like you, I'm eagerly awaiting the ability to do the same with the new release.

E.T. - keep in mind the goal of this software is to offer a complete OS package with software, and still remain 50MB or less. In order to do that, some things have to be sacraficed - in this case visuals. The menus don't have to be flashy to be effective.
As far as my review of DSL, I have no choice but to give it 5/5. I use this mainly to access harddrives that no longer function correctly (or have file systems destroyed beyond repair) in order to recover data to a USB drive or FTP folder. It has saved me, and others I've helped, countless times from complete data loss.

This distro is absolutely brilliant. Easy to install and works without a hitch right away in 95% of cases, you've got everything you need in it for browsing, text editing and other "usual" stuff.
And it's fast. Veeery fast. Excellent job :-). Those bas..... in MS could really learn a thing or two million from this distro :-).

Please, no more linux distros. I currently use Xandros 4.1 Desktop Pro on 3 workstations and it's so-so. There are no good desktop linux desktops. When they get down to maybe 3 distibutions that are truly inter-compatible then I may take linux seriously. If they're so damn great they would be ubiquitous like that other OS. I may ask my sister to write a linux distro.

Yes, it is an ISO so you can burn it or exreact it using any number of programs including WinRar and PowerISO. By far the best way to use this is to burn or extract the ISO and then follow these instructions to put it on your key ring USB stick.

DSL was my very first introduction to Linux. While it is obviously not for high end PC's, what it is able to do is amazing considering it's size. Easy to use and extremely safe to use.
If you've never tried Linux before, at least give this a shot.

I installed this on an ancient 100 MHz Pentium box with 32 MB RAM and an 850 MB hard drive and it ran like a dream. DSL is a godsend.

Kramy, you do realize there are floppy and cd images for booting DSL from a USB drive on PC's that dont have the ability to boot from USB...

Damn that's sweet on an IBM Thinkpad 390e 333mhz w/ 256mb memory! If my USB stick was bootable I'd take this wherever I go rather than lug a heavy laptop around....but oh well!
cory1492: I don't have a working floppy drive, but I'll look into the CD. Packing a CD around seems kind of pointless to me though, as they're rather large and break a lot easier than a laptop. A bootable DSL CD image would work though, as then my USB stick could be 100% file storage.

Used it on someonelse's computer, because my ISP (AOL, don't snicker, please) won't let me connect to the Web with anything other than Windows... Something to do with proprietary software in my USB router-modem (SpeedTouch 530 that will only work in USB mode ; no Ethernet for me, dunno why).
BTW, if someone on this forum knows a way to work around that, I'm listening !
Back to DSL (Damn Small Linux): loved it too, because it's a small, efficient, no-nonsense Linux distro, devoid of the frizzy, most of the time useless stuff you have to make do with in other distros.
Now, if I could connect to the Internet on LInux, wow...

Just awesome! I use DSL everyday. Just boot from the USB thumb drive and use it to test hardware. I love it! It even makes a nice protected environment for my children to use while browsing the web, with no worries about hackers, viruses, or any other malware.

Updated dmix - added sync button for easy volume control.
Updated Wallpaper.lua now has color chooser for background color.
Updated pcitable to correctly support Broadcom b44 module.
New extension check upon exit, will remind/allow user to save extensions downloaded to ramdisk before shutdown.
Updated French keymaps.
For maximum hardware support on older computers, kernel and modules were changed back to 2.4.26.
Removed mc for space reasons.
Ted help/manual now off loaded to current/documentation section of the download site.
General cleanup of some unused directories and libraries.
The development response on this operating system is fantastic, this is a good build, but I think removing Midnight Commander was a bad move, and so do many others, but then again, you can always install it yourself.

The new DSL looks, in a word, awesome. Of course it comes out not a month after I burn version 1.5 to a cd-rom, so I essentally wasted a cd. I think I'll hold off a little bit before I download it though, as I just like playing with DSL, not working with it.
Still in all though, if 1.5 was good, version 2 will be great!

Yes, it takes a lot longer to setup the preliminary steps - especially because you're required to slipstream SP2 with Win XP - but once your done, you will be extremely impressed! Check it out. Highly recommended!

I still like it, however, 2.1 RC2 still won't load from my USB drives. I have tried this on two computers on three USB drives. I really like to be able to just carry the USB version and not the live CD. It installs the files to the USB but not the loader.
EDIT: Even with e USB problem, this is the best damn thing I have ever played with. Small yet very very very useful! Had to give it a 5! I would love to give it a 10.

I'm not biased either Windows or Linux, but for such a small OS it rocks. I've run it from USB and CD on different systems including Dells, I've yet to try iton a laptop.

Another nice Linux distro. Linux is getting to bloated for small gui installs though: QNX can do the same of a floppy disk.

This is really neat. I can just run the bat file and have linux run right in my Windows XP session. Very sweet distro!

I love it. It fits on my flash drive and its DAMN small. lol. actually its great for techies that are fixing computers who can not get into windows and repair windows to back up files and stuff like that. it give it an A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
