Publisher's Description

Diskeeper with DRAM caching guarantees to fix worst performing physical servers or PCs with faster than new performance. Instead of defragging, Diskeeper 16's newest patented engine ensures large, clean contiguous writes from Windows so fragmentation is no longer an issue for HDDs or SSDs. This eliminates the "death by a thousand cuts" scenario of small, tiny writes that inflates I/Os per second, robs throughput, and shortens the lifespan of HDDs and SSDs alike. Diskeeper 16 electrifies Windows system performance to operate faster than new with the addition of dynamic memory caching - using idle DRAM to serve hot reads without creating an issue of memory starvation or resource contention.

The only thing more corrupt than the code that went into this thing is my hard drive after running it. I'll stick with mst Defrag. It's far cheaper, and it works great. And as far as I know, the author isn't a proselytizing religious nut.

Reviewing Diskeeper 2010 Premier Pro v14.0.909.0 on Windows XP SP3 (32bit/x86)

I've been a user of mstDefrag for the last 3-4 years and have also used O&O Professional, PerfectDisk, myDefrag, UltraDefrag, and Defraggler but I think this is the best.

Advantages:
1. The automatic defrag and proactive defrag prevention actually work (unlike other programs that claim to do it) set it and forget it.
2. Ability to defrag Windows system files, boot files, and Hard Disk MFT.
3. Quite fast at a full manual defrag compared to others I have used.
4. Lots of options, features, and config settings.
5. Noticeable increase in system performance.

Disadvantages:
1. Bloated GUI.
2. Memory usage on the Diskeeper Service (DkService.exe) [which facilitates the automatic defrag etc] is 52,000k+ regardless of whether program is running or not. The program itself (mmc.exe) takes around 16,000k when running.
3. The "Volume Health and Recommendations" are well off the mark, and overly sensitive.
4. Troublesome to activate.

I am not an expert by any means, just thought I would share my thoughts.

I've used Diskeeper professional 2009 since its release last year, and it's one of the best performing and most trouble-free utilities I have on my system. It's unintrusive, doesn't conflict with any other application and simply does a fantastic job of keeping the drives tidy. Highly recommended.

Diskeeper 2008 Pro user since it was released last year, and now currently trying out the 2009 Pro version on XP.
To cut a long story short: DK 2009 Pro is awesome. The defrag engine has been tweaked some more, and is blazing fast. Defrags all three drives at the same time, without bringing the system down to a crawl. One of the non-system drives had only 7% free space, but DK 2009 managed to defrag it fully without breaking into a sweat. Not many defraggers can do that.
Finally, a welcome inclusion of file placement algorithms in the 2009 Pro edition.
This is the best defragger I've used. Highly recommended!

Diskeeper has been a reliable part of my administrative toolset until the most recent version DK2008.

An attempt at boot time defragmentation resulted in complete loss of the directory structure and chkdsk has now claimed to have recovered 1.6 million numerically named orphaned files.

I've had BSOD before with DK7 which were subsequently fixed, but this is much more severe. The system is new and hardware is not likely the issue. The main reason that it rates a '1' (rather than a '3' say) is that customer support has been poor.

I've had one boilerplate response after a week of trying to contact them via email.

So, can someone, anyone, explain the benefits of upgrading to 2008 PP when 2007 PP is currently in use?

I need some help folks. Hey I'll upgrade now if someone can show me the worth, but I can't see it...

Thanks!

In my opinion, the best defragmenter on the market today. Better than Perfectdisk or O&O because it runs more smoothly, has a much better GUI, and has the best automatic defragmentation function by far. PD/OO make claims about free space 'optimization' etc, but I never noticed any improvement after trying out those. And they still don't match the low resource usage, fast defragment time or the intelligent automatic mode of Diskeeper.

This product sux.

It supposedly automatically defrags your disk to improve disk access performance. But I find no performance gains when using it unless I make the software do it manually. And now they jump on the "Product Activation" bandwagon, which makes this software suck big time.

Go find O&O Defrag 200 Freeware Edition and stay away from this pile of steaming software.

Still the absolutely best Commercial Defragmenter. You install it, turn on automatic defragmenting and never have to manually defragment your computer ever again - seriously. You never even have to ever look at it again, it just works in the background only when the system is idle and will never interfere with system performance. It doesn't get any better than this. Not to mention this is one of the most reliable and safest programs on the market. I run it on every server and workstation I setup and have never had a problem. Stop wasting your time defragmenting, let Diskeeper do it for you.

toasale and Floske Tuf do not have a clue, that is the nature of internet, that even kids have access.

yes, windows defragmenter was made by the company which is making diskeeper, which in my case is plus.

diskeeper is the BEST defragmenter in this universe since version 7, since version 9 it became magnum opus, and version 10 or this new version DISKEEPER 2007 is all your Windows Server/Workstation business needs!

IIS is becoming more and more popular(with IIS 7 making appache looks dull) so is NTFS file system, so is the need to defragment it intelligently in background with NO PERFORMANCE ISSUES when defragmenting without ANY BLOAT without ANY RESOURCE USAGE with HUNDRED percent reliability.

I guess you think that this is the Diskeeper. But you are wrong, it is not. IT IS MUCH MUCH MUCH more.

Stellar software for years with unsurpassed features for your windows machines!

P.S. I do not work for this company, I just like their soft, and been trusting it for years (ok it did destroy my windows2003 disk with boot time defragmenter once, but that bug is fixed, hopefully :)

Wow. I can't believe people actually use the Windows built in defrag utility. Do you really trust Microsoft to defrag your hard drive when they can't even code a secure web-browser? And to the person with the XP 64 bit: I just built a system with XP Pro 64 bit and Diskeeper 10 works perfectly. I use FULL versions of Diskeeper 10 on all of my computers and couldn't be any happier. Maybe the trial version is your problem, but my full version works quite well under XP Pro x64. Diskeeper puts out the best Defragging utility PERIOD! It's quick, gets the job done, and is light years ahead of any built in Windows utility.

Quick note to klingon379: The 64bit version is a seperate installer, I have not requested the trial version in years so I do not know if they offer both the 32 and 64 bit versions for trial however both are on the CD I got with my purchase, not that this helps you much, I just thought I would let you know they are seperate installers.

I have been using Diskeeper Pro since version 7 and have been very happy with it, so I purchased Diskeeper 10 Pro Premiere and when I tried to install it, I got an error that my processor did not support the installation package. I immediately sent an email to tech support, and 4 days later, still have not received any kind of response from them. Because I didn't receive any kind of response from tech support, I have sent 2 emails to customer service asking for a refund for the software because I paid $125 for it and can't even install it, and again have received NO responses whatsoever from them either. In the meantime, I was eligible for a FREE upgrade to Diskeeper 10 Pro, so I installed it and it works fine. So, apparently there is some kind of a problem with the installation package of the Premiere Edition. So, I rate the product as very good, but I rate their tech support and customer service as POOR. Once my registration runs out, I will be changing to a product where the tech support and customer service is better, which wouldn't take much. I don't appreciate them charging me for a $125 product that I can't even use!!!!!

Revolting, not even worth the uninstall. The later versions are nowhere near as good as the classic workstation versions.

Version 4.x of DisKeeper actually *UNDERSTOOD* how the disk was operating and altered the filesystem to match its read-write patterns. It consolidated directories waaaaay better than all modern defraggers. Yes, I've tried O&O, Raxco, and Norton's defragger too, which ruled the FAT32 scene, all fail since modern HDDs look after themselves better than the defraggers.

Also, 4.x was completely independant of MMC, which I now find handy but steer away from if I can.

slegg:

It's easy to compare; both products are by the same company. Also, ALL defrag tools today use the same standard Windows APIs (even Symantec caved). I ran Diskeeper for years in various incarnations (I started in the NT days) until the XP defrag engine was included in the OS. I used 9 for a while and then uninstalled it and immediately noticed the following benefits:

Speed - the system was immediately noticeably less sluggish.

Less annoyance - the so-called "smart" defrag didn't kick in at inopportune and frequently ridiculous times. Sure, I could set it to execute at a specific time but I can do that with with the included defrag, can't I.

No gimmicks - MFT extension? Pagefile defrag? Puh-leeze. Marketing.

So here's 10 with a bunch of new "features" and ONE decent effort:

Speed - if I set a Scheduler job to execute at 2:00AM with the built-in defrag, why do I give a ratz azz about speed? Starts at 2 - done by 3. Life goes on and I'm asleep anyway.

Less resources - if I don't load it until I want to run it by automation, why do I care? So now it doesn't bog my system down quite like a Jenny Craig candidate after a binge. About time, eh? But it STILL adds a slight performance hit to the system, even now. Personally, I prefer to run as few usless services as possible. Less RAM use, less overhead (and I have a gig of RAM on my box so it's not really lean).

I-FAAST - can you say "gimmick"? This is just like MFT extension. Wow.

Enhanced UI - "more marketing".

Native 64-bit OS support - and the version that ships with XP64 is what, exactly? Right.

Terabyte volume engine - OK, this one has merit. But how many of us have a terabyte of disk space in our workstations or SANs attached to our machines?

At the end of the day I get the same basic functionality and performance benefits by using the built-in defrag and:

1) it doesn't cost me a cent

2) it won't add unnecessary overhead to my machine.

To my mind paying for more overhead and the same result isn't exactly smart buying.

Three stars for a product that has real benefits only to a niche market (the SAN scenario).

Oh, and using a defrag tool on a busy SQL server is NOT a good idea - performance lag.

As I already wrote I am pretty impressed by the newest DK.
It comes in three flavours:
- Home Ed.
- Professional Ed.
- Professional Premier Ed.

The Pro edition works with Windows 98-XP. The Premier Edition is the most interesting (but costs much too much IMHO) because in fact it consists of two separate programs with one installer. One works with Windows 2000 and XP (no 9x support), the other runs natively on Windows 64-bit operating systems. It supports I-FAAST technologies. According to the producer: Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology (I-FAAST) improves file access and creation by up to 80% (average 10%-20%). This is the first industry implementation of 'Disk Performance Calibration', the modern evolution of the outdated and inconclusive disk optimization strategies of the past.

When I-FAAST is enabled, Diskeeper runs specially-engineered benchmarks on your disk volumes to learn their performance characteristics. Diskeeper then transparently monitors volumes for file access frequency on an ongoing basis in to determine which files are requested most often. Special analysis techniques prevent Diskeeper from being 'fooled' by files that have been recently accessed.

I can say that it is very good if you have an array of HDDs or very large partitions. If not, the advantage of the new technology is almost not visible at all (at least in my case). So if you do not have an x64 OS and/or a RAID config you should not even think about spending another 50 bucks for the Premier Edition.

Anyway, after the horrible crash of my PD and testing the newest DK I decided that I will not wait for a PD upgrade and stay with DK. It is worth of it.

I test the newest DK Pro 10.0.593.0 and I am very positively surprised. It is blazingly fast and it defragments my HDDs thoroughly in background. I tried O&O Defrag and PerfectDisk but surprise, surprise! DK seems to be the best. I thought that PD (which I used for a long time) defragments disks the best but I had to change my mind.

Roj, how can you compare this to built-in defragmenter?! The built-in-thing is the crappiest stuff ever.

I use diskeeper for years now, it's speed is fantastic comparing to other defragmenters. Smart mode, screensaver mode, mft and pagefile defragmenting etc. You can just start the defragmenting proces and continue your work - no noticeable slowdowns. I'll like this piece of software.

I have been testing extensively
- Diskeeper
- PerfectDisk
PerfectDisk is defenitely the winner with a light-year ahead.

Don't take me wrong :
Diskeeper is much better than Defrag that comes with Windows XP.
But PerfectDisk allowed me to speed up my system due to it's "Smart Placement Option".
PerfectDisk also did a perfect "Boot-defrag".

Resizing your MFT reservation zone is hardly ever really necessary, and even if you want to, you can do it manually, with a simple registry change. Windows handles this for you under all normal circumstances.

Like other reviewers, I experienced file system corruption after running boot-time defrags with an earlier version of Diskeeper (it was a long time ago, but I believe it was Diskeeper 6).

I tried Diskeeper 9 for grins and giggles, and guess what? Diskeeper 9's boot-time defrags still corrupt file system structures. In my case, it was some NTFS metadata. Executive Software support said that Diskeeper was just stressing the disk enough to make it physically fail, which is utter nonsense--the drive is fine, and I don't have a single bad sector with data in it.

This is not a physical drive problem, but a logical file system corruption issue, caused by Diskeeper. I've run many, many offline defrags with versions 4 through 7 of PerfectDisk, and it never caused such a problem.

I had no problems with the online defrags, and they went quickly. The "I/O Smart" and priority setting features are great, and I wish other defrag utility vendors would implement the same sort of thing. I found "Set it and forget it" to be (quite ironically) very clunky and poorly designed. The fact that you can't select multiple volumes for analysis or defrag, unless you first select "Set it and forget it", is just plain stupid.

If you run the trial version of Diskeeper, I urge you to create an image of any partition you use it on first, with something like Image for Windows first.

I liked many things about Diskeeper, but even though online defrags worked fine, I just don't feel comfortable keeping it around.

Version 9.x is very fast, and all it asks is that you disable any firewall you have during installation (not during normal use). Best of all, Diskeeper is able to defrag, expand, or completely replace your pagefile.sys (MFT) upon reboot. Along with many options, it's very solid.

Both versions 7 & 8 worked well during a normal defrag. The problems occurred when doing a "boot" defrag. Tech support was superb, but they were unable to offer a solution. The system was a P4HT on an errorless striped drive with numerous clean installs. Problems ranged from corrupting audio and video files to chkdsk doing massive repairs to the drive. On several occasions a complete reinstall was required. This may all have been caused by Gremlins, but I don't want to risk trying version 9.

I really like some of the improvements they made for this versions, such as extra-low priority defragging. Even so, even though it was set to 'smart-mode', it still managed to annoy me a little bit by starting during an online gaming session. That's when a rigt-clickable tray-icon, from where I can now quickly shut down diskeeper, really helps.

Took about 2 weeks before it corrupted my WinXP machine and I had to do a total reinstall. Diskeeper 7 took about the same amount of time on 2 different WinXP machines I have.

This product has gone from average to dreadful. I really wish Symantec hadn't discontinued Speedisk which was a better, more effective and 100% reliable product.

I've had two systems scrambled by Diskeeper and a buddy lost everything on his laptop to it (plus the corporate backup tape of his laptop had already been recycled.) My guess is DK isn't so hot about spotting damaged filesystems and went ahead and reorged them on faulty data: Pretty hard to make a cow back out of hamburger...

There's also the open question if folks want to support the Scientologist's whose 'church' owns this application.

Hey, dzjepp... if you don't plan to test it, then don't write reviews... I've been using Diskeeper v7.0 since it got released and the product is great, no problems at all. If you are getting issues, check if your hard drive as any kind of problems instead of blaming the software.

Also, keep in mind that the Disk defragmenter included with Windows XP has been co-developed by Microsoft and Executive Software (the makers of Diskeeper), so they know exactly what are they doing.

I have also used V7 for some time and consider it to be good. But who knows?
How the hell do you test the level of fragmentation anyway?
Anyone know of a test please?
I have never had any problems with this version to date.
Let's see what "improvements" V8 brings.

I have been a beta tester for Diskeeper since version 7... and tested this new version. It is much improved over 7, which was very good. The new interface is better and mods to the "Set it and forget it" are improved, as well. Have had NO problems during the beta testing, so expect the release to continue that legacy. A worthwhile download with all the new improvements and speed.

I want to tell you guys my experience I had with Diskeeper 7.0SE I've been using it for quite a while without knowing that it was the source of my computer's frequent CHKDSK /F prompts/reboots. See, I would use Diskeeper 7.0+ I would let is scan and do it's thing. A while later sometimes a day or two it was random, it told me that the drive needs to run CHKDSK to correct a few "errors". Well, lately I have uninstalled Diskeeper 7.0+ and now I am using the defragger that comes with Windows. Yeah it is also Diskeeper but, this version is very stable for me I have NO more CHKDSK problems after defragging. I don't know if it had something to do with the super fast scan-engine (maybe it was too fast for it's own good?) Well, one thing I do know is I won't use a newer version, maybe I will test this new one on my other (crappy) PC to see how it works. I am giving this Diskeeper 8.0 Sneak Peek a neutral 3 because I don't really want to test it for fears of messing with my PC again.
