This new build fixed the issue where when playing a divx video in a browser it would turn off Vista Aero skin. :)

very nice plugin for streaming a divx on the web.
but with the file size of the Divx vs a wmv or mov or swf or flv,, I don't really think it will take off for streaming. Due to the large file size.

horsecharles: It only needs a browser - I have IE totally removed and it runs fine.
This has low resource usage! It played this vid fullscreen without maxing out my CPU when set to 5x200mhz FSB(1ghz) on an AMD Athlon XP, while only increasing the Firefox memory usage by about 10mb! For comparison, Media Player Classic used roughly 25mb for the same video, but it can play the same video on a 500mhz(with ffdshow 20041012).

Edit: Hey, Kramy! You're right about any browser-- 'cept for Opera's latest version 9. Not as lucky as you @ resource usage, will try on more systems...Wish I could remove IE--work w/ too many sites that require it.
BTW Works on all windows versions, esp. fully patched ones: the only requirement is IE5, which came out before win98se. Does use up a LOT of resources though!

I gave it a four mainly because the Divx codec has not been impressing me as of late. I downloaded a few of the example trailers. They are either overcompressed or the codec is suffering. I recompressed the High-Def Shark Tales trailer from the Divx site using Nero's codec at the same size as the smaller version and Nero's codec looked much better.
I'm uninstalling it mainly because I haven't found any sites that use this yet except for the example site. My advice is don't bother installing this until website's start requiring this. (if ever)

Very much improved. Only issue I ran into in the last 20 minutes was with the installer ... it tried to copy the plugin to a Mozilla Deer Park directory which no longer exists save for a reference or two in my registry, and gave me an error.

First, the license agreement is _exactly_ the place to put this information. In order to install the software you had to explicitly check a box that says you have read the license agreement and agreed to it. This is standard procedure and you are expected to be responsible for what you do when you install software on your PC.
Second, do you want to know the extent of what we "market" ? Well here it is: 1553. That's it. 1553. That's the number of installations of the plug-in there have been yesterday. That is the _only_ thing we record. And you're afraid I'm going to record your IP and go to your door to sell you a set of encyclopaedias because of that? Aren't you over-reacting just a little bit?
We are a small company and we are defintely not lining our pockets. I am the only developper of this project and we need this metric to know if the project is viable and so that we can continue to offer it for free.
YES this is freeware, because it's free for an unlimited period of time. NO it's not spyware because we do NOT collect personal information. Please stop giving this a bad review because you obviously don't fully understand the words you are using. You are hurting us when all we did was being honest and upfront with you in the license agreement.

For example, many people with Windows XP use WMP10, while people with other OS's that listen to music prefer WinAmp. Since (95%?) of people are on WinXP now, if they have 80% WinXP, 20% other windows, then they know they're attracting a different audience. It also allows them to snag your IP(as they could do when you download it) to find out where you are in the world.
Ooh wow, you're worried about not being allowed to hack a plugin so you can use it in your favourite media converter to rip DivX stuff into something else. I personally would just download the DivX Create bundle for that, which IS listed as shareware btw.
This plugin is awesome. Way better than anything Apple has made. And unlike Quicktime, this thing doesn't dial-out whenever possible and waste system resources. Oh, and don't forget real; that one also dials out, and it has LOTS of spyware in it.

I did install it after disconnecting my connection, monitoring where it was trying o send to, then blocking it. I immediately uninstalled it. DivX is yesterday.
Quoting the license agreement:
"SOFTWARE INSTALLATION: When the software is installed a notification will be sent to our servers. This notification will be used to count installations of our software and is not be personally identifiable. Notifications will also be sent to our servers to measure marketing offers and general use of the software to assist Licensor in its product development and will not be personally identifiable."
You are sending information from my system, and hiding it in the much unread license aggreement. Try using a dialog that the person installing must read and press a btton to show assent. "Measure marketing offers" I will not install this to help you "market" anything and line your pockets. This is listed as FREEWARE. It is obvisouly collecting and sending information, therefore is SPYWARE.
"NO TRANSCODING: You are prohibited from using this software with a software or hardware product whose purpose is to "transcode" or convert DivX video or DivX Media Format content into an alternate format."
DivX WAS the front runner in compression for a while, now you are also trying to stifle the competition? How very Microsoft of you.
Release something truly free, and quit trying to find more ways to make money.

DivX has not shipped any product with adware since July 2004. That's one and a half years ago.
There is no adware or spyware in the plug-in. "Marketing" in the EULA does not translate into "adware". We simply count how many times we display the picture we show after playback stops. Right now it says "Got DivX?", but in future we might put news about new products there, links to tutorials on DivX, or even special discounts on our other packages, movie deals, and links to new trailers. To this day, we have never advertised a third-party product in our software and we do not bundle any third-party adware components.
Each time someone goes through the license agreement, spots something about "marketing" and then jumps up and down screaming "SPYWARE!" with no justification it's increadibly frustrating for us when we don't even have to mention this in the license at all - we do it to be upfront and honest with you, unlike most products that actually do contain real adware.
Why don't you try out the product before rating it?
