httpd.confused brings up a good point that the gameplay is really average (if that). But atleast its got a decent length to the game and it is mostly enjoyable. As for the comments of Slug_Coordinator, he needs to realise that win98 is dead. get over it. i think its excellent that a developer has said stuff supporting the worthless old software/hardware to keep people happy. it only leads to greater cost in support for all the cross platform issues. and as doom3 is a showcase for the engine, good on em for looking toward the future.
But as for gameplay doom3 is still boring and uninspired. lets hope someone can do something better with the engine

DOOM3!!! MOTHER @#$@#$%s
To person below, 98 is inferior to NT from a technology stand point. It may surf the internet great and play Sims, but anything with very high IO it chokes. ID Software would be foolish to attempt to support a toy operating system. Download an old Maya demo, and you will see why.

First I think they should still support Windows 98se and up as Microsoft has extended life of it till June 2006. Not to mention that many gamers still run 98. They have went overboard or Resources. Also some of the characters have the same head just flipped upside down.
Also they have the Satanic Symbol which they could loose! Also for $50.00 get a life. There is no way it is worth that.
I say rename this to Gloom3. The original Doom 3 that was slated for release seemed to be better. At least the requirements. I will not also pay to update to Xp even though I can Run it on my hardware fine. I don't like XP being shoved down my throat!
Finally way way to dark. Maybe if I could run it on my 98Se with my Amd Athlon 2400+ Radeon 9800 All In Wonder PRO, 512 Megs ram, 2 120 gig hard drives etc., Only thing I have against is my OS which I think is discrimination.

Well its good if u can get it for free. i dono if i would pay for it. The graphics are orgasmic and the sounds are really good as well, the game itself is very scary too. However it tends to get pretty repedative and boring about half way through, but then picks up again at about 2/3 the way through. It also doesnt play too well with ati cards, nvidia ones are prefered. And its not that difficult of a game to run eitherand runs fairly well on my 2 yr old laptop so it can be done even on an older computer. Anyways, its a good game but not necesairly worth purchasing.

Unfortunately game makers seem to be just releasing the same games with higher system specs. I'm not against them supporting the latest cards, but why can't they design graphics engines that support older systems as well? I've gotten to the point that I've stopped buying many games because of this.

This game has unrealistcally high specs. Not enough people are going to buy it because their computers cannot run it properly. Therefore the software company has made a big mistake by releasing this, as they are just losing money.

*Yawn!*...don't bother with this game if you want engrossing gameplay...or actual non repetitive gameplay.
If you want to see the game engine and the nice graphics, download the demo, there's no need to buy it to try *that* out.

The game itself is alright, nothing to write home about.
The graphics and sound are simply amazing. Sell your car and buy the latest and greatest hardware, cause this game is gorgeous.
With that said, graphics DO NOT make the game, and this one is medicore at best.

At least play the entire game before crying about boringness.
When I played the first levels on my 9800pro I also thought it was just repetitive and dark.
But the last third of the game is great, especially hell to the end. Of course it was also much better on the GF6800 I got after those few levels.
So don't judge the game from a 3 level demo (or using mid range hardware).

I bought Doom 3 awhile ago, and have played the whole thing (did you read that, simonchretien? I PLAYED THE WHOLE THING!).
D3 looked great, even on my GeForce3. I don't rate poorly because of graphics. Try to keep up here, kids.
D3 is "scary", as 3D games go. To me, this is actually more because of the sound effects than the graphics. But I got bored about half way through, nonetheless, simply because it's totally repetitious and predictable.
Doom 3 has great graphics, and perhaps even more importantly (for giving the game a "feel", anyway), great sound effects throughout. But the game is hum-drum FPS all the way. The formula is typical: One maze-like level after another, where you enter one room, get surprised by one enemy after another, shoot them all, then move on and repeat. This gets really old after awhile.
There are some other things that really annoy me about D3 as well, such as the fact that weapons don't automatically reload unless you continue firing them. Having to hunt down one passcode after another to open cabinets is really annoying as well, as is picking up "PDAs" and having to read through--or listen to--a bunch of total nonsense. And of course, the inability to use the flashlight while using a weapon is a total annoyance as well.
If you are going to argue that all of that makes it more realistic, well I'll just reply that if realism was what I was after, then why am I playing a game with a "hell gate" on Mars, where I can magically carry 1,000 pounds of gear, and ten billion enemies somehow can't manage to kill me?
And some players (who, like me, aren't very good at these games) will find some parts of the game too difficult to be much fun. That's where cheats and mods can help.
But, of course, the real point to the game is the engine, which will be used by other (and, hopefully, better) games in the near future.
I just know this will get one five-star review after another, just because the graphics are so nice. I disagree; gameplay is what counts, and great gameplay is timeless. Rating a game highly simply because of graphics makes no sense at all. By that standard, D3 would rate highly now, but four years from now, when the graphics standard is even higher, it would get a much lower rating. That makes no sense.
So the 2-star rating is for the GAME, not the engine. If they ever add a listing for the D3 engine itself, I'll give it a 5. But the GAME doesn't deserve anything near that.

Great graphics, boring gameplay. That pretty much sums up this game.

This game sucks. The graphics are absolutely incredible though.
