I have used Driver Detective for years. It has the financial advantage of not requiring a subscription. [Edit: The site now shows ~$20 for a one-year subscription. Apparently, there has been a change in policy since my purchase.] But it doesn't identify updates quickly or perfectly. For example, both ATI and Creative updates have been available for some time without being recognized.
In addition, it has difficulty identifying when Intel updates have occurred. For example, the Intel site's software update utility
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/
shows my chipset software is up to date, but Driver Detective still shows the software as out-of-date. There's an elaborate way to force recognition of an update, but I haven't used it.
In addition, some of the updates shown are for different products from the one to be updated.
Thi software is a time-saver, but it isn't perfect. Live customer support chat is available, and that can help.
