Pros: Nothing really worth bragging about but it works as it's suppose to thats the pro.

Cons: No matter what this program when ever used will keep auto loading and running upgrades. It's designed to bypass every registry and startup setting to only make it work when you open it. Very intrusive like a piece of FORCEWARE... You run it then it will always load on windows startup, forget anything you do to stop it from auto loading its only temporary.

It draws a lot of resources and system speed.

Bottom Line: They need to stop the Auto Loading and forceful bypass once you use it. I dont want it running 24/7 just cause I use it once in a while. If I am not using it I want it off and those resources off. I have read tons of forms where many are sick of that happening. They Ignore it...

Cons: Even if you go into your Registry, Config Windows Files and Startup and remove the Automatic Running of Dropbox after you run it you cant stop it updating and reloading in Startup and Stays Running in Background have to use Task Man to stop it and repeat process....

Bottom Line: Unless you want a slow PC and enjoy it over riding your setting and options its a PITA

Ok, call me paranoid, but why does the publisher say Obi?? And I just checked my current version of DB and it didn't find any updates. So, unless I see this experimental version of dropbox.com, I'm not going to be a guinea pig. Although I do use DB, Drive and OneDrive. My DB space is about to expire, so I'll probably transfer everything to OD since I have over 200GB of space with them.
(oh and for anyone who uses multiple cloud storage services, you should check into MultiCloud. I just installed and set it up and finally have a all in one storage UI.

Slow box? The one and virtually *only* thing dropbox has going for it is that it's **faster** than all the other cloud storage services - by _far_.

Granted recently they've added some features to the web interface to make it simpler and to compete with google Docs/Drive, and they've started massing a collection of sites that integrate with it - but as far as the API integration it's no more widespread than google drive and their other top competitors.

tried it on a tablet and cell-phone and home desktop and I will say it work flawless.on all 3 devices, easy to use. The severs handled my 235 meg upload very well , better speed transfer rate then I get off

First some negative comments about Dropbox. I don't think the 2GB of free space they give you when you sign up is very generous. I feel they should at least start with 5GB for free and give you 1GB for each referral instead of 500MB per referral. If most people you know are already using Dropbox the number of people you can invite to join is quite limited.

On the positive side I happen to use a Windows screen reader (for those who aren't sure what a screen reader is look up "screen reader" in Wikipedia). Therefore it is important that software can be used easily with the keyboard. Dropbox has very good keyboard support for the program interface and the Dropbox release notes show some commitment to make sure the program is accessible. In contrast some other cloud storage programs I've tried such as www.copy.com while offering very generous amounts of free space have a very mouse-driven interface making them difficult to use with a screen reader. So I think I'll mainly use Dropbox for now.

If you want encryption there are apps for encrypting your files client side to prevent snooping by the government or other entities.
(Big Business trying to nickel and dime you at every opportunity they get.)

You START OUT with 2GB. You can earn up to 20GB, I think, on the free accounts. You can immediately get an extra GB or two by doing some menial tasks that take seconds... several GB more for installing the mobile app and using the photo sync capability. That will put you at 5GB pretty much right away. After that, any referrals add an extra 500MB... and there are other ways here and there to gain more space (like DropQuest). Do your homework before saying how ridiculous 2GB is. I agree that it's a little meager compared to offerings like Box's 50GB promos or the "standard" initial offering of 5GB on the countless other services that copied Dropbox's idea, haha... Dropbox has been around since 2007 and is one of the highest regarded and used cloud storage/sync services (100 million users). What it lacks in generous space offerings, it makes up for in reliability and consistency. I recently saw a new cloud storage site/app offering 100GB of storage! Awesome! -- Until it randomly went down and never came back up a few weeks or months into the gig. Which one do you want to use? The service used for more than half a decade by 100 million people-- but only starts you with 2GB... or the service that went up two weeks ago and offers you 250GB to start? I'd like to wake up tomorrow and find my data still exists... or that it wasn't hacked because the owners hired a homeless dude to set up their servers... and he is not that big into security-- patches... encryption... changing default passwords... all just extra work for this guy. He wants to hurry up and take the $20 they paid him for the job and go get ripped out of his mind! Sometimes quality is more important than sheer quantity.

I really do like this program, and I love the concept, but can you guys please come up with a more straight forward, easier to understand interface for your application? It's still way to confusing and hard to understand for as easy as a program as this is. Please have your people redesign your interface for this so that it is much more intuitive and straight forward. I know it looks simple to use, but this program is still far less intuitive that it should be at this point. Please do some more focus groups with users that have never used your program before so you can get the issues that I'm referring to here sorted out finally (They should have been caught and identified long ago by your internal beta testers!)

I really like Dropbox. The biggest plus to me is you just use it, no effort. The biggest drawback for me is the fact I turned everyone I know onto it when it first came out and never used recommendations so I could have more storage. My fault.
Updates are not a problem........simply don't update every time if the updates are too frequent for you. I tend to believe the same people bellyaching would gripe if the updates were too infrequent.

As for passwords, i don't care if your password is 5000 characters long, it doesn't matter with dropbox because they have FULL ACCESS TO ALL your files at ALL times. The reason for this is so that they can freely give them up to any "law-enforcement" agency that asks for them for any reason.

"Passwords" in the dropbox scenario are only keeping you protected locally at your own station, from potential LOCAL attackers. As far as super-long paranoid passwords are concerned, even on "secure" services that don't have backdoors to their encryption so that the company employees can access your files, the passwords you suggested (music4) are ridiculous and impractical. We simply don't HAVE the processing power today (not even all the GPU/FPGA computing power on earth) to crack passwords of even HALF that length. Maybe in 50 years.

Dropbox grants 2GB. The referral process to increase the storage space is pretty complex time consuming. Many other cloud storage providers give immediately 5GB or more (Box.net, GDrive, SkyDrive, Ubuntu1). Not worth to bother anymore with Dropbox.

OK if you don't mind your files being looked at. I did notice a case over the pond where a person was taken to court & ordered to reveal the encryption key!

There are other privacy issues regarding transmission of data on the net that I won't go in too...

I've gone back to personal backups using external drives here & in a remote locations.

PROS:
Dropbox is by far the easiest I've seen so far in terms of the implementation of syncing files across multiple machines and "the cloud". Most importantly, it is the most "transparent" solution for the end-user that is available right now.

CONS:
You can't "rename" the root folder to anything other then "Dropbox" which is annoying. However, using "Hard-Links" and "Junction Points" in Windows can somewhat "soothe" this issue.

!!WARNINGS!!:
Dropbox is allowed to browse through, LOOK at ALL of your personal data and GIVE IT TO WHOMEVER THEY SEE FIT INCLUDING so-called "law-enforcement" agencies, the FBI, NSA, etc.. The proprietary encryption that Dropbox uses to "protect" you is ABSOLUTELY 100% USELESS since it is purposefully includes "backdoors" in it so that the entities mentioned above can have access to ANY AND ALL of your PRIVATE data simply by serving Dropbox with a subpoena. Although Dropbox states in their ToS that this never needs to happen since they will WILLINGLY, EASILY, AND FREELY GIVE YOUR DATA TO PRETTY MUCH ANY LAW-ENFORCEMENT AGENCY THAT REQUESTS IT.

All you have to do is ENCRYPT your files BEFORE they even touch the dropbox folder. Perhaps you could Compress (RAR) all your data and then put it in there, as long as the password is STRONG, RAR encryption is currently unbreakable and impractical to brute-froce (crack) so you're good to go. If that is too time-consuming perhaps you could look into enryptions solutions like TrueCrypte, etc...

Bottom line is if you ENCRYPT FIRST, then no one will be able to see your files EVER, especially not the employees of dropbox, OR their fruity little FBI buddies.

The service itself is an excellent idea and I use it on a daily basis. I most wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who juggles files from one machine to another, which is almost everyone these days! There are no catches and it even allows you to view files from any web browser, which works well for a user who doesn't have a Dropbox account (as an example you can share photos with the family this way). Some people do say it can be a bit slow but largely that's dependent on the speed of your Internet connection. You can fine tune the options to set limits for download and upload speeds, but the defaults are perfectly fine for most people and I wouldn't mess with them unless you really feel the need. I can't say anything bad about Dropbox at all and would be lost without it. Install it now and wonder how you ever managed without it ! ... Actually, 1.1.29 is the latest stable release as of two weeks ago, according to the DropBox forums. The 1.2.0 is now the beta, although DropBox seems to use the words "experimental" and "beta" interchangeably. Regardless, 1.1.29 is now labelled by DropBox as "stable".

But complaining about a site named BETAnews linking to a beta version makes little sense to me to begin with.

Incidentally, the 1.2.0 beta/experimental build is supposed to address the recently publicized security vulnerability: "Security enhancements, an attacker will not be able to steal your computer's account credentials just by copying configuration files to another machine." Also: "New encrypted database format to prevent unauthorized access to local Dropbox client database."

Anyway, I'm a bit miffed at Dropbox for basically lying for the past three years about their employees' ability to access encrypted data (regardless of what internal and undocumented safeguards they have in place). Other than that, it's still a great service.

If you want to store stuff in the cloud that you're REALLY worried about other people getting a hold of, you need to properly encrypt the data yourself (TrueCrypt, for example) before uploading it rather than relying upon the service to handle the encryption for you. This remains true for just about ANY cloud storage service.

So yeah, DropBox really dropped the ball when it came to disclosure. Really badly dropped the ball, in fact. But the service and the software is still very compelling relative to other offerings out there. It's supported by just about everyone, and the remote access features it offers are second to none.

Possible reason for not auto-updating: Is it a beta or experimental release? I have seen mine auto-update, so I know it works. Second: solve security issue on cloud services? Especially those that update on bit-diff level? Cloud storage + Truecrypt. Truecrypt can create a portable version of itself which you can upload as well and always have the ability to decrypt your file(s). The key is NEVER stored anywhere but your head (unless you are stupid enough to save it in a text file in the same folder or something). About the default space, 5GB is the new black. Even Box.net went up to 5GB; SugarSync=5.5GB; Amazon 5GB, upgrade to 20GB for under a dollar; ZumoDrive=2GB, Google, Microsoft's SkyDrive=25GB (all can be mapped to local drives, etc using certain programs like Gladinet, GMail Drive). Anyway, if you're looking for a Drop.io or Rapidshare replacement -- Ge.tt is where it's at (or gonna be at). Love that site. Still regardless of anything, DropBox is my favorite of all. They just need to add some more features to it -- but their recent iPhone app update really took things in the right direction on the mobile end. So thumbs up there. Now if I could only RENAME and EDIT text files in-app. I use Nebulous Notes anyway for that, so it's not a huge deal, but they would be what I would consider "fundamental" features to such an app. Slow progress with Dropbox, but slow is better than none, I suppose.

Sure, it could be lighter, but there are always compromises and tradeoffs in that.

I have it installed on four very different systems, and it never uses more than 50MB of physical RAM on any of them. When my browser uses an average of five times that amount (often much more if I have lots of tabs open), it really doesn't bother me that much.

I guess if I had 1GB or less system memory, it'd be a bigger deal.

Pretty good actually, if not for being so unreliable. Unlike some sync programs (IDrive) It's very light. You hardly notice when it's uploading. On the down side, it has errors the developer isn't competent to fix. Users constantly complain of "out of space" stoppages when they are not out of space,,, and failure to sync certain files and folders. It's far too undependable to be serious, so I'm dropping it. I'm finding SugarSync currently has a slight edge on the other 2, but will be watching all 3 for improvements.

Windows Live Mesh is (finally!) a competitive service, but DropBox still offers a lot of advantages like public link creation allowing you to send someone a download link to any file that's in your public folder(s), automatic creation of picture galleries viewable in any web browser for image files placed in the Pictures folder, undelete and undo features for data recovery, sharing synced folders between users or between groups of users, and, most importantly, cross-platform integration.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if DropBox ups the amount of free space you get at signup to 3-5GB sometime this coming year.

Well, by "trivial" I mean that you go to your personal Dropbox page on their website and click on "show deleted files". They keep deleted files for 30 days with the free version of the service.

You're right about this being necessary if your local files are accidentally deleted through the OS (the Dropbox website uses the example of "your pet" deleting them, heh), but if your hard drive crashes and you recover it and then reinstall Dropbox, it will just pull everything down from the cloud again unless you specifically tell it not to.

The particulars of the way solutions like this operate can be confusing even to intelligent IT professionals. I'm really not trying to be nit-picky even though it may come across that way. I just don't want to add to the confusion.

Another correction, if your local files are accidentally deleted, or your HDD crashes and is recovered (and Drop Box client re-installed), it's possible your files in cloud storage will be deleted. You can ask Drop Box to undelete the lost files, a minor problem, but not trivial. Still rates a 5, though it's not quite perfect.

Just a minor correction: Dropbox will not delete your files from the "cloud" storage if your hard drive crashes, only if they are deleted through the file system (OS) Dropbox is installed on. But yes, file recovery is a trivial affair regardless.

Great sync application, just OK as a remote or "cloud" backup program. Very unobtrusive and stable, great support.

As a sync manager, it's perfect. As a remote backup program, it's fair, but that's not what its intended for. For example, if you use it as a remote backup program, and your local files get deleted (or you have a HDD crash), the sync feature will obediently erase your files from the remote location unless you catch it in time. (you can ask Drop Box to undelete them, a minor hassle) If you desire to use Drop Box as a "cloud" backup program, I recommend you don't run the tray app at Windows start. Just schedule it to run for 30-45 minutes a day, and your local and remote files are safer.

Wait until the next release in a day or 2, this one has a couple of minor issues on some systems. 4.5 stars, needs a couple of options to make it a killer app. Highly recommended!

Heh, at this rate they're gonna hit .9 before the .8 version goes stable! Weird. I guess they've been adding a lot of major features in this iteration, though, and they need a lot of testing. Selective sync!

"Rated up artificially by its developers" my arse. Sure, there are other services offering "cloud" storage, but all of the competition I've tried either imposes more restrictions of the type and characteristics of data being stored (like maximum file size limitations, or syncing only program data), doesn't offer the same level of online remote access to stored data (public link creation, automatic photo gallery creation, etc., doesn't operate as seamlessly on individual client computers; requiring more user intervention and/or arbitrary file organization, or just plain fails a lot.

DropBox isn't perfect. The client software occasionally uses a lot of system resources during scanning and syncing. But I'm not aware of any other similar solution that's so actively developed and includes as many features.

To put it simply: if you don't at least see what's unique about DropBox - what sets it apart - then you just haven't actually USED enough of these types of services to know any better. The only competitor I would even consider using at this point is Ubuntu One, but it's got a long ways to go before it can match DropBox on consistency and cross-platform feature completeness. It'll get close, but it's going to probably take at least six more months.

1 - ability to leave some files on the dropbox server and NOT download them to my local machine (but show that they are there)
2 - smaller memory footprint.

I use services like this to backup important data that I wouldn't want to lose if my hard disk stops functioning for whatever reason ... I can backup that data to a thumb drive, external hard drive, CD/DVD, or online service (preferably secured) but the main thing is to have it in more than one secure place to retrieve it. And I can access it from another location if I'm not home or in my office. If it is valuable data and represents a means to access your life saving then you should encrypt it with some of the better methods before storing it. I try to use AES or at least that level of encryption and not put all my trust in the online storage service. Hopefully you guys can leave some useful info in here and not just think of ways to be ugly with each other. It's not a positive reflection of your wittiness to do otherwise. As for this program, I briefly tried it but I prefer others that don't require that I download a program to use them. It does work fairly well. Before making a final choice, I'd set some time aside and try most of the popular ones and pick one or two that suit me the best (2 in case one goes "out-of-business" or is bought out to avoid converting or extracting the data). I have my important data stored in more than 1 secure place and encrypted. The big thing about Dropbox's reputation seems to be the length of time they've been around and its ability to sync relyably.

Software like this is very, very dangerous. Why would I want to give all or part of my important data to some stranger? The company that is developing this software would probably use my data to steal my identity regardless of what their privacy policy says. Anyone with half a brain knows that privacy policies are just meaningless words. If they weren't then nobody would be getting things like junk e-mail.

@bobad - If I want to share things like pictures or music then there's already a service available for that. It's called Myspace. Dropbox is nothing more than an online backup service for people who don't have other means available to back up their data. Online backup services cannot be trusted with anything.

Dropbox does NOT delete your files if you lose them on your local computer. It only deletes files that you specifically tell the operating system to delete. That is, if your hard drive or your operating system crashes, your backed-up files will all be kept safe indefinitely on the Dropbox servers as long as you don't delete your account.

Even if you get some malware that makes changes to your backup directories or you accidentally delete something, Dropbox tracks all changes and deletions made for 30 days. So as long as you notice you're missing some files or you made some unwise changes within a month of them occurring, you can go back and recover them using either the Dropbox context menu within the OS or the Dropbox web interface on their site.

It's an elegant solution, and it's perfectly fine for off-site backup.

Edit: oh, and it's good to see that they've labeled these builds "experimental". Nice!

Nice app, but don't use it for backup. That's because it mirrors a local folder on your computer and a remote folder 1:1 on the DropBox server. If the files get lost on your HDD, they will soon be deleted by DropBox on their server. So until they wise up and implement an option to not erase any files on the server, it's useless as an off-site backup.

It's somewhat useful for accessing files on your computer remotely. It is also somewhat useful for sharing a few pictures with friends and relatives, but we already have Photobucket for that.

Nice app, easy to use, but usefulness is severely limited as it stands now.

Yeah, these versions (up to at least 0.8.21) seem to be betas even though they're not labeled as such. The Dropbox web site still prompts you to download and install version 0.7.110 and the Dropbox app isn't automatically updating to newer version yet.

Yes, you start out with 2GB for free and you can get 250MB for viewing all of the tutorial pages and then an additional 250MB for each person you invite, but only up to 3GB, not 5GB.

I allow very few programs to run in the background on all of my PCs. This is one of them. Great stuff!

Dropbox is great but I wouldn't mind some more free storage. 2GB is not very much. How about 20GB free storage financed by ads...?

Hard to tell what's new or updated in this version as Dropbox always just works.. Smooth upgrade, no issues.

My only criticism is the memory use. considering it appears to be doing very little most of the time 45Mb of ram is a lot to consume.

But apart from the high memory usage, I just LOVE dropbox

Dropbox is one of those very rare applications that "just works" you install it then forget about it. It just site there doing it's (very clever) thing without you having to care one iota about what it's doing or when it does it.

It's so simple. you save your files to the dropbox folder and they're in there, on the web, on my other windows machine, on my linux netbook, on my work computer.

I'm an author of AllMyNotes Organizer, and my users want to be able to synchronize data between two or more computers. Dropbox is a perfect sollution for this purpose - I'm recommending to all my users to use Dropbox for sharing data between conputers, so far I'm receiving good feedback from them.

Linux user running the Firefox browser, I found this app to be seamless and straight forward. I created an account and uploaded a test file within 1 minute. Kudos to DropBox for creating an easy network based "cloud" computing program that's not dependent upon a particular OS.
