You really need to be clueless to like Nirsoft's MyEventViewer. It doesn't even display events properly; many of them don't show at all in the content pane, or only have a tiny bit of random text that show there. It's also lacking many of the features that Event Log Explorer has.

I can not get past an error and the documentation for the program does not list it. the error is not listed on the internet in relation to this software.
I can not access my logs and all I get is
---------------------------
Connect Error
---------------------------
Error accessing {my computer here}. Error code: 2138.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
the only online reference I can find is...
You can't search the field for the specified value

Windows has no trouble accessing my logs though with Windows\system32\eventvwr.msc

And I had to give them my name and address and blood samples and a DNA swab to get this thing registered for "FREE". Data mine much????
this may be the only bad review I have written but at least they could list the error online...

UPDATE: OH this is BETA OK I will move my rating up from 1 to 3 but still I don't like being interogated to be permitted to use a "free" app

How I hate these third-party interfaces. It's slower than a typical windows application of this type should be, and things like Ctrl+Tab and Ctrl+Shift+Tab don't work. Grab a scroll bar knob, and the window content doesn't scroll with the cursor--you have to release, then it jumps suddenly.

Other than that, yeah a flat view would be nice, and an easier way to set predefined filters (rather than opening multiple dialogs and navigating for a file). And no, the "quick filters" doesn't solve this problem. But still a helpful utility.

Skyfrog: I gave it a 1 because they've spelled "standard" wrong in the file description. And because you can save downloading 2 megabytes by using a program that you already have on your computer.

The advantages over other options includes one click access to event code explanations on MS (the explanations on the private site usually provide no useful info). It is an agile app and the user interface is professional. The Nirsoft alternative provides more information out of the log, giving better granularity, noting for example a CHAP logon event as opposed to a wdigest event while EL explorer simply reports them as logon events. So I say add both to your tool box. They're free after all.

I also find Nirsoft's MyEventViewer a better viewer of events. It shows all events in a simple one window view, no need to keep opening up new windows to view details and its free and lite.

Ever since NirSoft's MyEventViewer came out (which BetaNews refuses to list), I uninstalled this annoying thing. MyEventViewer offers a flat (i.e. combined) list of events, which is just what I want. I got sick of Event Log Explorer constantly forgetting column sizes and settings as well.

Works MUCH better than "builtins with a couple of scripts".

After they made a mistake with expiring personal licenses, they have changed to never expiring personal licenses. Free and no hassle with renewing.

This is FREE for personal use software.
After install, it runs in evaluation mode, but if you are agree with the terms of the license agreement (personal noncommercial use), you can get a personal license from our site absolutely FREE.

Nice, certainly better than the default MMC piece of crap that comes with Windows. The grid lines get screwed up when I scroll with my mouse wheel, though, and I could do without having to screw around obtaining a "personal license" (which, by the way, expires).

ghammer

ghammer reviewed v2.0 on Nov 27, 2006

Does what it says, but a few issues with the interface. Does not remember the arrangement of log windows for example.

Otherwise, nice tool!

Also, not exactly 'free' as there is an expiring license available for personal use. There is no cost for it. At this time.

This really is a great app - however, we have 500,000 plus security events on our domain controllers, and it chokes - either hangs or just shuts down unexpectedely or brings the whole PC to a crawl- he needs to work on his memory management

Doesn't matter if on a quad CPU server with 4g ram or my dual-core PC with 2g ram.

If you like the tools from sysinternals, then you will like this. It makes going through the event logs quick and simple. It also makes it quite easy to search the internet for available information on errors. Very useful for all admins and advanced users.

This is a great free product.

I happen to use the PreInstall Environment from time to time to fix computers. Its called Bart's PE (preinstall environment). Its a nice program that will burn you a quick preinstall environment (look it up if you dont know what it is)...it also allows plugins. The plugin XPE allows you to use Bart's PE like Windows XP. Its real nice. I dont want to get into specifics, because you can search google and find out about it, but basically think of a Knoppix CD, but the Windows Kernel and Environment. (if you want to make your own BartPE+XPE cd in 5 minutes, go here: http://www.reatogo.de/Ba...PE+XPE_in_5_minutes.htm)

Anyway, it also allows for plugins of softwares...like a PDF reader, or a virus scan, or adware scanner, etc. Basically, since windows XP by default doesnt come with your favorite softwares you can add them as a plugin so you can use them in the Preinstall Environment.
Sure, most people use this as a knoppix cd, so they will get every software they like...PDF reader, winamp, etc. and then use this as a main OS. That fine.
There are people like me, though, who use this purely as something to fix a computer. The PE will read local hard drives so you can use VIRUS SCANNERS or ADWARE SCANNERS, which as stated above, can be inserted as plugins (thus the purpose of such plugins). Its much better than using safemode or the recovery console.

ANYWAY, in relation to this program...hahaha...
Well, in the PE, there is no event log viewer. Even if there was, it would be looking for logs on the local drive, which in this case is the RAM drive, set by the Preinstall environment to be B:\. And of course, none such logs exist. Im not sure if its possible to instruct the Windows Event Log viewer to look to a certain drive. I may be wrong, but its probably impossible in the Preinstall Environment. Well Event Log Explorer is the software to fix this issue.

I actually was able to put this software to use exactly the way i described above.
My sister's computer was messed up beyond recognition (so much so that I had to format and reinstall). BUT, i was able to put this software to use. I couldnt get into regular windows or safemode. But I wanted to read the event log to make sure it wasnt some kind of dopey problem that i could fix in 2 minutes, something the blue screens werent telling me. Well first off, no one in the BartPE community knows about this software, or has made a plugin for it...so the only way I was going to make use of this software was on a USB Flash drive, since the PE detects these things like it was normal windows xp (as long as XP has the drivers by default, the hardware will be detected in the PE). So I put Event Log Explorer on a USB Flash...and it worked great. You see, the nice thing about Event Log Explorer is that it allows the user to locate EVT files (event log files) manually and open them. So I just opened the event logs on the local drive, located in C:\Windows\System32\config\ and it it worked great. The software had some problems with kernel32.dll, which is probably something with the PE...but I'll figure it out another time.

Great freeware. I cant seem to find any other software like it.
5/5

Do you mean eventvwr.msc? That's easier than going through the main MSC file.

If you think that eventvwr.msc is "exactly the same thing" as Event Log Explorer, you either didn't bother to read the feature list, or you have absolutely no idea what you're doing. Or, maybe both.

The type of filtering, the interface, the viewing options... These are all things not offered by eventvwr.msc. I'd give it a rating of 5, rather than 4, if it saved its view between runs.

ModderXManiac

ModderXManiac reviewed v1.0 Beta on Mar 10, 2005

The writing of this program is a waste of time, IMO.

You can do exactly the same thing this does by going "Start" "Run" - compmgmt.msc
Then select "Event Viewer" from the system tools directory.

Waste of time, and a definite waste of time to download if your on dialup. Not to mention how coded this is.
