That is a extremely usable, light and stable desktop environment, easy to understand, reasonably powerful and rich of features for anyone.
Even OSX and W7 has still something to learn from Gnome's usability - I'm not talking about KDE 4 because it is no longer a desktop environment, it is just a sad joke.

in General Gnome is lighter and more stable than KDE,, though I like KDE interface but stability is a questionable ,

Looking Forward to GNOME 2.22 - Here you will find a little about the next important release. I find personally sweet that the interface will be more CONSOLIDATED as there are too many applets and tabs to mess around with. Yes, its a mess.

I have an extra computer running Ubuntu 7.04. Ubuntu comes with Gnome.

I am a Windows user, because I play games. Linux is a little weird when it comes to that.

So I wanted KDE because it looks more clean and you know... bla bla.

I found KDE somewhat annoying to setup, so I kinda ditched the idea again. Once Gnome is running its rock stable.

I have used both KDE and GNOME under Ubuntu.

All I can say is, KDE is for people who are used to Windows. Probably it is best for those who just converted from Windows. KDE's level of customization is amazing. People who wants to tweak it to their hearts' out, they should use KDE.

On the other hand, GNOME is for people who want clean look. It's simple and this makes it easy to use. Mac-lovers would love it. I also love it even though I always use Windows (sorry!).

I am looking forward to KDE 4 and GNOME 2.20. Let us see how it will compare with each other

i use ubuntu and fedora and i must say that GNOME is the best way for ME (maybe not for someone else) to handle linux.
its easy to use and very simple. also i think that KDE looks a bit like "windows for kids". its more childish. GNOME is - i think - more professional and its very "clean". i love the design and the way it works. maybe there are more possibilities in KDE but i dont really use them, so theres no reason for me to use KDE.
also it uses less memory on my pc than KDE.

for it and never will! - You have to buy Windows no matter what, you dumba**!
There is nothing better than Windows XP. Well, in fact there is... it´s called Windows Vista!!!

- Actually I would consider Windows XP better than vista as you need at least 1GB RAM, 128mb Graphics card and 15GB of harddrive space to run Vista and its costs more.

I can't wait for Gnome 2.20, I think KDE is too feature packed and it is overkill for most people. Gnome is simple, fast, intuitive and logical.

comeoffit, Ubuntu comes in KDE as well. It's called Kubuntu. The Gnome version IS much more stable. I've tried both.

Gnome is far superior to the clunky KDE 3.5.x

Gnome is fast, responsive and doesnt crash as often as KDE in my experience. KDE is for MS Windows closet-cases who pretend to like linux but secretly yearn for Redmond's OS. KDE is too much of a compromise. Gnome is prettier too, none of the crud and junk from KDE.

Newbie users may feel safer with KDE but once their training wheels come off Gnome (or possibly Xfce) is the way to go.

KDE is still better, and to the person who said KDE noticeably slower on the same system than Gnome under any distro--Have you tried every distro? I don't think so, so you can't rightfully say that. GNOME is becoming Mono (.Net) dependent. That alone is reason not to use it. The current version of KDE blows GNOME out of the water in terms of usability & features. When KDE 4.0 is released, it will be even better while GNOME continues to stagnate.

@sjc-- I know very well what kubuntu is. You've tried KDE & GNOME on ONE distro. Big deal. Means nothing.

@brusco -- You must be an ubuntu fanboy, they always resort to calling people childish names when someone says something they don't like.

You say GNOME is prettier, none of the crud & junk from KDE. That's a classic statement from an ubuntu fanboy. KDE varies from distro to distro, and can be customized like GNOME.

I stand by what I wrote 100%. GNOME is becoming more & more mono/.net dependent everyday, so it's closer to MS than KDE is.

It's beautiful. It's elegant.

But it's so damned restrictive. And bloated. Major refactoring needed. Xfce can do it, why can't Gnome?
