Sadly this once great program is now virtually abandon-ware. There are several serious bugs in it that can lose your downloads that are likely never to be fixed.

Maybe one day someone will take up the mantel and it will again become a koing amongst downloaders...

This used to be a great download manager, but as of today there is no reason of this still being sold on their page. Development was abandoned years ago, and the "new" 6.5 version is nothing else that the previous one + a couple of things the author added/fixed long time ago before abandoning the project. Better to stick to programs still being worked on.

W2k is still a supported Microsoft OS. I happen to dislike XP, though I own several copies, and absolutely won't be going to Vista, ever. I've mostly switched to Linux for day to day stuff.

GetRight is listed as being W2k compatible, and it isn't (now). This 6.3e upgrade breaks 2k, and it has done so on lots of machines I have tested with. Still no movement on bug resolution from the author.

* Fixed the crash when starting that some people were getting.
* Changed so it draws the download button text w/ Vista in "Classic" mode. (Not totally fixed, but did it so I could include it with the crash fix 6.3b.) Very weird since the decade old function to do the buttons stopped working with Vista!
* Included the newer OpenSSL files.

I've been with getright ever since. It is definitely the best there is. With Getright 6.0 pro, it just gets better! Torrent support, Mirror search, segmented downloading, FTP client, daily downloads/uploads and loads more. You may not be able to make out, but it has hundreds of tiny little features to make things worth it. Be sure to enable the advanced features. Once you intalled it, go through all the options and settings. If you download often, this app can be an indispensable tool. Anyone who doesn't like Getright has obviously not realised or found out the kind of features it has. My advice, take a look.. Get the free trial. Personally, I think it rules.

Cheers,

I've had it almost since the beginning when I was on 14.4K dial-up. It worked great then and does now as well, even though I'm now on broadband. I don't use the many extra features such as BitTorrent, etc. myself, although I suppose they're useful for some. However, I paid for it a long while ago and upgrades so far have been free. There is the Pro version, for those who want it, but I don't have the need of any more features; this version does all I need.

Saying that the free alternatives (such as FDM) are equivalent is just silly. They don't sport all the features that GetRight does. But feature fluff is only one aspect of good software.

Indeed, the major version bump to GetRight "6.0" is a complete joke. They added lightweight BitTorrent client features, maybe a couple other buried things, changed the graphics, and consider that worthy of a whole new version? Don't make me laugh.

From the moment I installed it, I ran into one aggravating bug after another, including everything from aberrant behavior, to repeated crashes.

And this thing was in beta for over a year!

This application keeps getting better and better.

I've bought an upgrade to the Pro version and like the sync functions a lot.

Unlike other posters, I've never had any "conflicts" with other apps on any of the machines that I have GetRight installed on. It just works.

Yes, it isn't free, but it does what it does better than any other similar app I have used over the years. (I own some others, but don't care for how they work.)

There are a lot of really useful features in this app. It is a must-have on my machines. The built-in GetRight Browser is very handy for grabbing a lot of files. And, the email add-on allows me to fire off an email with files I want downloaded, and have my machine at home download them and have them waiting for me.

Why would anyone pay for a software that just downloads files when there are softwares that do the same for free. Even if you say that the speed is better, I don't feel that justifies the cost.

Still one of the most valuable apps I have.

Even on broadband, if you download large files, the ability to download multiple segments from different mirrors cuts the total download time way down.

There are a lot of features. It's a tool I use every day.

Neoprimal

A Tool of the past. In the age of broadband and high speed internet, I can't think of why anyone would PAY for Getright.
Personally, I use free download manager. Does almost everything that Getright does, and is free. I'm giving it 5 because it's remained a reliable, solid utility. The interface is a little gummed up, but it's still one of the best download managers out there and a good deal for dial up users ----- still, I urge those who haven't to try the free alternatives, you may be surprised.

I've been using GetRight for years. I give it top marks. It's integration with IE is a big plus, and it has additional features like a site/FTP browser that makes adding large numbers of files for download easy. GetRight will reconnect and resume when the server supports it. The mirror search and multi-segment acceleration works well also. Bittorrent and podcasting support has been added, and the Pro version supports uploads and synchronization too. This app keeps getting better and better. I own several other D/L managers, but this one is my favorite.

Domingo

Domingo reviewed v6.0 Beta 4 on Oct 28, 2005

I don't really care about a "feature list" that I won't ever use. For me it boils down to FlashGet having a better interface, being less intrusive, and generally working better. GetRight works, but for what I'm doing (normal web-based downloads...no frills) FlashGet works better, faster, and using less overhead.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v6.0 Beta 3 on Aug 18, 2005

I hope deXter wasn't referring to me with his tirade on GetRight's looks. I didn't complain about its looks, I mentioned its interface, and by that I was alluding to ease-of-use, not cutesy appeal.

In any case, I got sick of GetRight... The interface is too cluttered. I never liked it much, but always put up with it. I'm a fickle S.o.B.--sue me. I still think it's a powerful download manager, of course. Just... A powerful download manager with a PITA interface.

The arbitrary version jump from "GetRight 5" to "GetRight 6" is a complete joke. The biggest change touted is the new toolbar graphics. Big deal.

But, zridling, GetRight does allow you to download files without being prompted for a file name. Its utterly cluttered interface just prevented you from seeing it. If I hadn't uninstalled GetRight already, I'd point out exactly where it is.

Zankur

Zankur reviewed v6.0 Beta 2 on May 5, 2005

look i in no way wanted to de-grade getright's image, but if people have dared to go beyond getright, and have used ida, idm.DAP,mass downloader,u will find that they have all basic features of getright with better interface.IDM for one has advanced integration which even heklped me download a couple of files thru kazaa.
Surely getright can't do that!
And only defence u had for my review of 5.2b version is getright beta2!

I wish people would wisen up and STOP comparing Getright with other dowhnload managers. Getright has SO many advanced features now that any person who would say that an xyz program is better than Getright.. is an idiot for sure. Name atleast ONE program that has ALL the features (or more) that Getright has.

And who the hell cares about the looks? The new 6x look is fine... besides, what do you do, start a download and keep staring at it till its done? Get a life!

And as for the silent download option, there are 1000s of programs out there that can hide any Window you want.

If you dont need all the advanced features that Getright has to offer, then it definately ain't for you. Stick with your stupid DAP.

Wes

Wes reviewed v5.2c on Feb 15, 2005

Getright is by and large the model for the download manager, but its rollback feature can be very, very destructive when downloading larger files (Linux ISO's, for example).

I did use this for most downloads below 100mb for a while, switching to FlashGet when the files were larger, but now I just use FlashGet. It's really caught up to Getright, and I would suggest using it instead.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v5.2c on Feb 15, 2005

I'm a long-time user of GetRight. The interface is in serious need of polishing, and some of its behaviors irritate me (such as the inexplicable ~2-minute delay that occurs before automatic downloads begin).

But GetRight is still the most-reliable downloader I've found. It has never corrupted a download on me, and I can't say that for some other downloaders I've tried.

Contrary to what freeafrog reports; I've found just the opposite to be true. I just tried a slew of the supposedly-wonderful downloaders on this site (including FlashGet, IDA, IDM, and all the others), and all of them had trouble with the type of download links used on this site (e.g. http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/929856304/1 ). GetRight is the only downloader I've tried that is smart enough to grab the binary file that is being pointed to with links like the above. (All the other crappy downloaders simply downloaded a text file named "1". Really nice.)

Oh--another thing that pisses me off about GetRight is that, even though I'm a registered user, it still begs for additional "donation" money every time I install an update. This annoyed me so much the last time it happened, I found out what registry value gets updated, just so I can set it ahead of time, and never have to deal with it again. That registry value is as follows:

HKCU\Software\HeadLight\GetRight\Config
"UpgradeRequest"=dword:ffffffff

zridling

zridling reviewed v5.2c on Feb 15, 2005

GetRight still doesn't provide a silent download option, and has no intention of doing so according to emails from the developer. Feel like I wasted my money on this monstrosity.

I have recently been experiencing many downloads where the only thing that this program downloads is the HTML code. Contact with the author is useless. I was advised to try IDM and DAP. I downloaded IDM and it worked perfectly on a file this program won't get. I bought this a year ago when it worked well with all the downloads I was doing, but now it has become mostly useless.

Getright is still one of the most reliable d/l managers, although not the fastest. This build is no exception to this rule. The only problem GR still has, is its horrible user interface.
Sometimes i wonder why software authors cannot simply follow native OS user interface design guidelines, published by MS.

httpd.confused

httpd.confused reviewed v5.2a on Nov 3, 2004

The interface sucks, but it's still by far the most reliable download util I've used--and that's a lot of them.

As far as needing a download manager with a broadband connection, well it doesn't take much imagination: You may want to scrape a bunch of files from a site, or you may be dealing with large download from a crappy server. Or maybe you are using a third-party browser, and don't want to have to keep the browser running for a long download. Still another reason is for its ability to resume downloads from servers that support it. Need I go on?

Neoprimal reviewed v5.2a on Nov 3, 2004

Getright it a great program. I REALLY appreciated it back when I had Dialup, however now I have to agree with darkpepe. I would have possibly considered spending the money to buy it had I still been on dialup and every megabyte mattered, but at this point if I just want organized or multimirrorred dls etc, I just use free software like free download manager. To offer a real review of GR however, it's great software either way and offers lots of functionality and options. Who doesn't like to hear the getright girl?

I previously considered Getright to be a second-rate download utility. It was buggy, mirror searches didn't work, crashed frequently, etc. However, with the latest releases, Getright has pushed itself ahead of the competitors. I used Flashget full-time until the Getright 5.x releases, which are very solid releases even as betas. The filemirror.com mirror search is great, and mirror control is equally solid. Well done.

I was happy using Star Downloader Pro, which has an elegant, simple interface, was easy to setup, and worked for every kind of file. But I decided to try GetRight; even bought it. I'll admit it's good and it's great if you want to download all the files or photos from a particular website. But I spent six hours going through the Help file and learning all the ins and outs of its complex configuration. However, here are four problems I found: (1) GetRight's Help file is not synchronized to the program's interface and is poorly written; (2) GetRight's registration charged me $35 instead of $25 option I selected during purchase, adding its own "tip" it says; (3) Lots of options in the configuration dialog that are poorly explained in the Help file; in fact, FAR, FAR too many; and (4) Several options do not work when checked in the config dialog and restarted. Still I bought it, though I'm reverting back to Star Downloader Pro.

I switch between flashget and getright. Getright's currently my primary downloading program because its ftp search actually works (I expected Flashget to fix this with the latest releast but it didn't), and its own mirror service, filemirrors.com, integrates automatically and works beautifully. My only reason for docking it a star is that right-clicking and selecting "download with getright" doesn't work in MyIE whereas flashget's does.

Fast and reliable was one of the best d/l managers ever used. In fact it was one of my favorites and i used to be a registered user since it's first release.
I don't use it any more, because of its non standard user interface and silly iconed windows.

I've used a bunch of other download managers, and they all resulted in the occasional corrupted download--so complain about GetRight all you want, you can keep those pieces of junk. GetRight is the only downloader that has never corrupted a download for me. It has some annoying interface quirks (such as needlessly always-on-top windows), but I give it a strong rating for its reliability, which comes first.

Its always hard to change and progress, especially when leaving a great program like getright. But thats wat i need to do since i start using net transport. I try using the latest get right version juz to motivate me to continue using it, but not only it fail, it also drag me towards net transport even more. The functionality of getright is top notch but the price are juz too unbearable for poor student like me, net transport not only a freeware, it also support stream download, and its darn fast too. Sry, i prefer net transport much muchmore than getright. Farewell g.right.

FINALLY after all these years it gets SSL support. Or, hopefully, TLS. TLS has better performance in session initiation.
However I have to agree with others that GetRight has become unstable - there's a quality assurance issue. Also the GUI needs to get simplified (PLEASE never ever add skin support!). BitTorrent support would be VERY nice.
Another important issue: MyIE2 needs to support GetRight integration.

You can rather use the not too bad - and free - tool called LeechGet (although more resource consuming than GetRight ! It was long time that I had stopped using the Get Right, but now I can see that really haves become better .
The 4.5C version looks good enough .
I liked allot the integration with the IE6 ,so the Get Right loads only when you open the browser .
I do not see any Close Get Right function after the end of the download , but they will do that soon or later .
The good news is that I can not call it as one memory hog any more , it takes only 3 MB when it operates ,and the damn ICQ takes 7.5 MBs to work.
Problems that I had with last version of it like the 3.5C ,was broken downloads from the INTEL FTP ,and that was the main reason that I stopped using it .
I will give to this proggy another one chance , just for the history ,is the older download manager in the web .
And also was the best when the Lycos FTP search function was Cooperating with the Get Right.

"New Features in GetRight 4.3:
· Enhanced Skins to change the appearance of the download windows. Pick from several included skins (use the Options button on the download window to change). And you can find more skins on the GetRight Skins web page. More info.
GetRight 4.3 allows much more flexibility for skin authors...almost any design is possible.
· Segmented Downloading--limits increased! Split a file into pieces and download different parts at the same time. This can greatly increase the speeds of your downloads.
GetRight now allows 8 total segments and allows 3 connections to the same server so that you can use Segmented Downloading with many more files and more segments.
Plus a variety of minor bug fixes and other small improvements."

Headlight must give two options: one version with the advertising, explain how it
works and other clear to licensed users, simply asking the registration number during the setup. I think simple! No Spy, No Paranoia! Getright is an essencial utility and don't need to be a target in a Spyware list.
About spyware I said...more tests and real evidences.

The following is a listing of all software known to install the Aureate
spy on your system. The Aureate spy keeps track of your Internet
activities and sends a report to Aureate every time you open your
browser. The Aureate spy places the following files on a Windows
machine. [It is not known, yet, to affect Macintosh or Linux machines.]
The installed files are some or all of:
adimage.dll
advert.dll
advpack.dll
amcis.dll
amcis2.dll
amcompat.tlb
amstream.dll
anadsc.ocx
anadscb.ocx
htmdeng.exe
ipcclient.dll
msipcsv.exe

Here is a review of the contents and
code contained in the DLL's that Aureate makes use of. Here are a
few of my findings up to this point:

advert.dll
=======

This DLL creates a hidden window every time you open your browser. It
creates and sends 4 pages of information to the Aureate servers using
port 1749 on your system, these pages include:

1. Your name as listed in the system registry ( not the name you
installed one of the programs with )
2. Your IP address
3. The reverse DNS match of your address. ( tells them what ISP and
area of country you are in )
4. A listing of ALL software that is shown in your registry as being
installed. ( Not just the companies they work with )
5. This DLL sends the following information to their server on all
URL's you visit:
A.) ad banners you may click on
B.) all downloads you do showing the filename/file
size/date/time/type of file(image, zip,executable, etc)
C.) full time and date stamps of all your actions while
using your
browser
D.) the remote dialup number you are dialing in on (taken out of
your dialer configuration)
E.) dialup password if saved, does not "appear" at first glance
to send this through to them.
6. Contains programmers note: "Show me the money! I want to
be Mike!"

advpack.dll
=========

Used during the installation only to check for other needed files.
amcis.dll
=======

This DLL modifies the following registry keys:
1. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
2. HKEY_DYN_DATA
3. HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA
4. HKEY_USERS
5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
6. HKEY_CURRENT_USER
7. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Unregisterss oleaut32.dll from memory as provided by M$oft and
replaces with its own calls. Switches back to M$oft's when browser is
closed. Creates stub processes to be started anytime your browser is
opened.

amcompat.tlb
===========

This guy tracks any multimedia clips ( video/pictures/sound ) that
you view It tracks the rating level on the video/picture/sound and
title / location Contains references to DblClick ( still digging on

1 Notice for Newest Getright 4.2 Getright ask when you're installing that whether or not you want to install Aveo's Attune. They said that Attune will warn you about many trouble before it happen. I don't know if this is the other "Spyware" or not. Can someone please test it for us all please? Thanks!!

oops, sorry the last post should have had the 1 start rating, less if possible. As a footnote, that server program is capable much more than displaying ads on yor computer Merlin...Its a server, and if you open it in an hex editor, you'll see what the code is designed to do (providing you have some programming knowledge)

reidyn

reidyn reviewed v4.2 Beta 3 on Mar 28, 2000

Goodbye, Getright.... The ad is actually much more obnoxious than I imagined it would be. It's far too aggressive about trying to get you to register, before you've even had a chance to try it. Like the last guy, I poked around in msipcsv.exe with a hex editor. One joke was funny (the one about the elephant), the rest was just random stupidity. It's really too bad this product is so annoying with it's ads and registration stuff -- if the product does have any actual merits, I'm too turned off by the ads and annoyances to find out.

merlin

merlin reviewed v4.2 Beta 3 on Mar 28, 2000

That's funny draxis, because I have GetRight regged here, used the option to remove those ads files, and right now I can't see that file you're talking about... Considered that something else on your system could have installed it, or is still using it?
People are making a fuss over something really trivial regarding this Aureate issue as far as I'm concerned. Anyone can get my address by looking up the Yellow Pages, and send me junk mail... Same difference.

Could this discussion be moved to another place, as it's today's adware software - and not GetRight which this link has turned out to be? The topic will go on, so would not *BetaNews* be a natural place to follow it up? I give GetRight 4 star here, because it's a fair program - and the problem here is far wider than a single program with advertising. Still give one huge Christmas star Minus for the way adware is handled, at least by lack of fair information! We should not shoot the program developer who needs to make a living and to be able to develop their software for users. Maybe there is no reason to shoot Aureate or alike either - STILL a fact remain, and that is that their program goes active on user computers. Still there is basically no other facts on this than Aureate saying *it don't do anything* and others saying *it steal the soul of your computer* - but still we all await facts and results? Even then some facts remain, as one should not leave active program on someone's computer without informing of this in advance. As when users discover guests sneaking in the backdoor while they where busy letting an adware in the front door - it's bound to be strong reactions. So let's get the facts, and still remember that adware is a brilliant solution for users as producers. As a software which put rotating ad banners on a program - AND NOTHING MORE without asking!!! For McAffe's report as Trojan hoax, okay let's see the facts and criteria's for such a statement? For Mr./Ms. *mjbgr* comment on that **if everyone paid for what they used the ads wouldn't be needed**, let me just say that if my aunt had *balls* she would have been my uncle... Bottom line is that AdWare is a great solution - lets us keep it so, and not make a great solution turn sour. Let's get the facts on the web table - that's the only part that will end this story. I know how advertisers are suckers for demographics, so I expect Aureate and alike are pushed from that side, so let us push as well and get it all again on the right track. Yesterday I tried the adware version of AceNotes, and they had implemented in their uninstaller function that all Aureate files also where removed, so that's one step in right direction at least. So as said before - just GetItRight, eh?

Don't you get the impression here that Mcafee uses Aureate also? Of all the software I have used in my day , Mcafee messes up the system more than any other. I have seen Mcaffee associate all of my executables with Mcafee's own extentions & then after removing Mcafee , NO exeacutable had it's correct association . NOT GOOD at all ..
I will say again . When the truth comes out if it DARE!!
then I really hope for Mcafee's sake they are correct . Otherwise they will have chosen the wrong side here.Just because we love to Beta test , does NOT warrant spyware .
We have the right to privacy , REMEMBER???
The Aureate stes up a server on your puter & therefore sends & receives info .. Monitor your ports , This is where the evidence come in .. Have you tried monitoring the info sent out by these programs ? Untill then you can not judge
Demographic targeting does not just mean receiving add banners DUH!! Nobody looks at or wants the banners.
It be the browsing habits that creats the folio..
bye bye

To address the advertising stuff:
1) the Aureate spy reports are *not true*. McAfee/Network Associates among others says the same:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/ve98516.asp

2) The very first page of the GetRight beta installer says "GetRight uses a system to show advertisements in the GetRight program while you are trying it out...". (Plus refers to more info in the long license agreement too.)

3) Have you paid for GetRight and/or other shareware that you use? If everyone paid for what they used, the ads wouldn't be needed.

ok morons! search on your C: drive for this file! adimage.dll, once you found it, right clik on it and go to properties, and you see the Aureate name in there!!
another file is advert.dll if you have dialer2000 install! there are more!!! and htmdeng.exe too and tfde.dll hey if you install getright i think those files are in your system, just search for them and look at the properties. then we'll see who's stupid!!!!!!! stupid!

In a time that lots of download managers are appearing on the net I am convinced that after testing most of them Getright is stable and robust. This new version has modern options like skinning and also has further improved stability. Only minor is that Getright does not allow downloads through multiple connection on one server. It only does the trick with different servers. Well worth the download!

I will have to agree and say that this program doesnt monitor you. If this was the case I would have seen something come across Bugtraq by now! you dont know what Bugtraq is? well then dont listen to all the rumors! getright is good!

that s*** about spyware is not true - if it was, you think nobody would sue them? Damn moron who published it few weeks ago apologized and said he couldnt find proof that it was collecting or sending data to anyone. Oh no you are being watched, stupid people.

I can't believe this program palces a trojan on my system to monitor my activities w/o my permission/knowledge. Someone needs to sue the developer and/or Aureate. Does anyone know if any government watchdog or private group is taking legal action against them? In the mean time I'd like to suggest that everyone download this program and install it... then *CRACK* it. DO NOT PAY FOR THIS PROGRAM, but crack it (it's not free, the full version costs $) just to stick it to the developer and show them they can't f*** with people's privacy rights. The crack is available, just go to astalavista.box.sk and do a search for the app- you'll find the crack. I paid for it btw- now I want my God D*** money back, and I _mean_ it. After you crack this app, go to http://grc.com and download Opt Out to remove the Aureate component.

beware people that the first review seems to be more and more a 'review' of the program-makers!
try to read the messages wich contains some critisism as well and look out for one-liners as 'try it!' or 'it's worth the download' and 'i highly recommend it'

I've been using GetRight for a while now and it's really a must-have app for modem users and even for people who have fast connections but don't want to D/L all over again a huge file (even though some servers don't support resuming). GetRight is smart and useful. Try it!

Although I'm not a tremendous fan of "click monitoring", I still swear by getright. The click monitoring in the new version is a lot more stable then it used to be, and the scheduling/dialing/download management options are absolutly outstanding. Segmented downloading is a really neat (if rarely used) option that has saved me tremendous time on more then one occasion.

I don't use all the features in it simply because there is so many of them, but overall this is a must have if your an avid downloader.
