Publisher's Description

Google Sitemaps is an experiment in web crawling. Using Sitemaps to inform and direct our crawlers, we hope to expand our coverage of the web and improve the time to inclusion in our index. By placing a Sitemap-formatted file on your webserver, you enable our crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly.

Sitemap Generator is a simple script that can be configured to automatically create Sitemaps and submit them to Google. Sitemap Generator can create these Sitemaps from a URL list, access logs, or a directory path hosting static files corresponding to URLs.

Sitemap Generator requires Python 2.2 or higher. We recommend that webmasters using Sitemap Generator have a knowledge of transferring files to their webserver and running scripts.

This code can be used by other search engines like Yahoo, Msn, etc., not just Google-- it will benefit us all... and it's a case in point that directly addresses your concern of Google becoming too big for our good: it's commendable they did not attempt some proprietary twist.

Yes, Google will eventually become the largest company, barring any unforeseen eventualities, but I can't think of a worthier candidate--

a. it's not costing me any out of pocket $ / don't have to buy anything to use any of their improvements / products, and-
b. i'm not seeing any evidence of them foisting upon us any proprietary and/or lesser product/technology inferior to any already-existing / competitor product.....

At any rate, it's harder staying on top than getting there; and Google's especially vulnerable because most of their valuation is dependent on public perception / voluntary use: if Google were to misstep, they'd be toast.
Peace.

Pipewrench, it's more like this:
"Yeah.....can you just go ahead and run our code on your website so you can get on Google faster? Getting on Google will help bring your site visitors and can make you money! That would be great......thanks."
