A major problem in the early beginning and that is why I still did switch over.And...in uTorrent you can see by the red colour that there is no connection to the tracker and that is a must have for my since i'm into private trackers and ratio is everything! I stay looking to this prog cause it is having potential but who can give an anwser to me?

*Highly recommend when you only download torrents
*For time beiing useless if you are uploading torrents

Torrents starting very fast, with private trackers I am connectable as YES with a non-blockedport offcourse (see detailed logging info, it is informing you). Where uTorrent fails to stay connected, Halite stays connected to the tracker!

Halite is informing you also better then uTorrent does. It is having difficulty to remember the new configuratingsettings and it happens also that I have 2 times halite it the systray, both bugs needs to be fixed.

As a uploader you can NOT create torrents, if you could 2nd problem comes along because you can NOT choose where the new made torrent must be downloaded. Halite useless for uploaders to privatetrackers because...

>>if you create a temporarely torrent and uploading it to a PRIVATE tracker you have to download that same torrent again (then is the keypass added) open it and browsing to the actualy folder where the file(s) are added, with Halite you can NOT browse and can NOT create torrents as earlier mentioned

Great stuff. They're doing all of the right things to turn this into the best open-source BitTorrent client out there.

It's still not quite as full-featured as uTorrent or Azureus (Vuze), and no, it's NOT as light as uTorrent is. But it's a great compromise if resource usage and using open-source software are priorities for you.

Big thanks to the Halite team!

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v0.3.0.4 Revision 386 Snapshot on Mar 15, 2008

I have to say that the recent changes are a HUGE improvement. Gui is now more customizable (like utorrent), port forwarding is customizable.
Most importantly I have been recognized by every tracker I tried it with. (there are a few that have allowed only lists)
CPU use goes up as you add torrents but on my slow amd it is almost expected.
As long as I also stay connectable I will stop using utorrent. cross-fingers

echohead

echohead reviewed v0.3.0.4 Revision 386 Snapshot on Mar 15, 2008

open-source and lighter than utorrent (which by the way, is slowly becoming identical to the official bittorrent client). halite is updated about once a month and with every revision becomes more and more stable without adding unnecessary features.

if you miss the days before utorrent was bought out and the devs started adding unnecessary features to it, give halite a try.

c4p0ne

c4p0ne reviewed v0.3.0.4 Revision 386 Snapshot on Mar 15, 2008

It did not show the seeds, they where all zero as if was seeding alone. That is defenitily a bug.
The first button is not in use yet.
I am looking for a replacement for uTorrent 1.76 and this program would be the replacer if it where showing the seeders (the do if i switch back to uTorrent).
This bittorrent client is NOT blocked in forums, so that is one good thing about it, you can put everything to pause with just one button, second good thing. What I miss is it colors that uTorrent are using, it is just to plain text now. Will look to future release and stick to uTorrent for this moment, expecting this program will devolope itself in the near future!

no s*** to the guy who said this would have lower ratings if utorrent hadnt been bought out.

almost every torrent client would have a lower rating had uTorrent decided not to sell out.

look at what we have here now between open source ((best way to go because everyone can develop them and safest)).

Deluge: high potential but is huge like over 30 mbs installed and isnt as stable on windows as it is on linux systems ((where it was made on))

Azureus: java based making it a resource hog and now has the s***ty Zuedo added to it, i mean i think they want us to use 100% resources and its basically their "legal" way to get away with adding adware without calling it that. its bloatwear city in azureus land.

Torrent Swapper: a new one hasnt been released in over a year.

Halite: id say has 2nd best potential to Deluge. deluge's plug-in system is what makes it a great torrent even being able to download blocklists directly to it. halite is far smaller, and is updated more between the 2. so while deluge might have the most potential, halite might have the best chance to reach theirs.

anomoly

anomoly reviewed v0.3 on Jan 14, 2008

Not allowed on some trackers and consistently made me not connectable. I'll try it again. Can't seem to get the speeds one can with utorrent as utorrent has local peer discovery with peer exchange BUT it does have more encryption abilities.
OK tried it.
Major issues with a torrent that works fine in utorrent:
"Exception caught; invalid torrent handle used, from alertHandler"-critical". Halite just hangs with "Queued..." on that one, but handled another torrent from same tracker fine.
File deselection is broken.
Didn't get around to addressing not connectable issues or, of course, trackers where it is not allowed.
I am guessing utorrent will NEVER be bested? Nor come close either

Skawt reviewed v0.2.9 Revision 344 on Dec 8, 2007

I'm very impressed with Halite. It doesn't have all of the features I would like yet, but the author does take suggestions and implements them properly. It may take up more memory, and is physically a larger binary, but there has been an unquestionable increase in speed. This could very well be due to my connections not being blocked because I was using uTorrent.

Automated loading of ipfilter.dat, automatic reloading and restarting existing torrents after shutdown and restart of Halite, and the ability to close to the system tray would be nice. I've already suggested these features.

Prospero424 reviewed v0.2.9 Revision 330 on Nov 8, 2007

Great stuff; keeps getting better as features are added. Right now it's the most efficient open-source BT client for Windows.

I still prefer uTorrent simply because it's so feature-rich, but Halite is slowly gaining.

BTW, if you're going to suggest a "clean" version of a client, it shouldn't be from a group that is releasing closed-source, self-described "leech" versions that have been modified by completely anonymous people who have already proven themselves to be untrustworthy by configuring these clients to send falsified data to trackers and other peers just to get faster download speeds. It boggles the mind that this could somehow be considered "cleaner" than the official uTorrent client.

Farking leechers...

@anomoly:

I believe you downloaded that txt file was because of the file you wanted was either before or after that in piece number. In order to get the compete file you do want, you have to download the last piece of the file before it and also the first piece of the file after it. I believe the minimum size for a piece is 256k, so you're going to just download that whole txt file since it's only 1 piece and required.

Eh sorry for rambling :P Great program so far. Still needs some work/tweaks but it's so damn light and it's open source to boot.

I tested this quite thoroughly.

First, I don't particular care about the politics behind the development of the software; I'm only interested in its performance.

That said, I found I just couldn't do in Halite everything I wanted to in uTorrent. uTorrent has been running rock solid for 2 years with low CPU usage running multiple downloads and I can not think of a single thing that I would change about the program.

I'm sure Halite is good for many people and it will obviously continue to improve. I recommend trying both programs (preferably not at the same time), going through the preferences, CTRL-ALT-DEL to observe CPU and Memory usage etc and basically decide for yourself.

I should note that if one program uses LESS memory it might not necessarily be better. You wouldn't appreciate it if Windows used 5% of your RAM and constantly thrashed to your hard drive would you? No, you want the software to provide a good balance automatically and give the necessary Advanced Tweaks for those who need them.

@DJInsomniac

utorrent was bought by bittorrent inc (owned by Bram Cohem, the creator of the bittorrent protocol) right after the release of 1.6.2 for 1 or 3 million dollars.
bittorrent inc makes bittorrent, aka mineline. and since lude, orginal maker of utorrent has been cut out and theres some question of whether or not bittorrent inc has been tainted by the MPAA, I'm really hoping that this surpasses utorrent

The ability to NOT download certain files has huge memory leaks or whatever.
Adding a torrent in stopped mode so I could select exactly which ones I DIDN'T want still gave me 5+MB of data I specifically said NO to.
Nice try. Hopefully this is fixed soon.
Weird as I tested with same torrent twice. It's almost as if the first time it simply ignored me.
I asked for 12+MB of data and it gave me the entire torrent (30+MB).
I believe there is an issue between the left/root pane and the right one.
Until this is fixed I will have to go back to utorrent.
BTW. The 3.33MB halite exe can be upx'd (with alpx) down to 962KB
ALSO-When you tell it to remove a torrent and data it leaves stuff behind.
These I believe are minor issues and I DO prefer this over utorrent and it's one too many options.
Utorrent is 170KB & halite is 962KB not a big difference. But who knows. Considering what the internet is these days maybe utorrent will always be a better client (too bad it's a closed source).
The guy's probably retired on the $ he made

ComradeF

ComradeF reviewed v0.2.9 Revision 326 on Nov 3, 2007

Just replaced µTorrent for me. It's nice and light, so much that it's also a little bare. Hopefully the developers will keep the former and pick away at the latter. =)

Also, for those saying we need the ability to control torrents on the individual file level -- click the gear icon on the top, then click on one of your torrents. You'll see a Files tab pop up down there. It's not intuitive and needs to be changed, but it's there. This view probably ought to be the default.

halite is basically a young, open-source utorrent. give it time and the two will be indistinguishable (assuming halite doesnt pull ahead).

oh, and the main feature im waiting for is the ability to specify which files you want to download.

It´s fast, slim, so much better than uTorrent, BitTorrent, BitSpirit and Azureus. This is the best torrent software! It doesn´t speed down your web surfing and your pc memory. It´s fantastic, like uTorrent once was. It´s better to keep it on low popularity or some major company will buy it and f*** it for good.

Halite is small BitTorrent client with potential. It doesnt use a lot of memory and has good speed; now Im just waiting for it to have file selection.

Nice slim software that does not eat up your ram nor CPU too much. With a dozen torrents loaded and running, the software barely hits the 10 mb mark, which is quite nice. Seeing as this is a fairly new bittorrent client, features are still minimal: there is currently no seeding rules and no speed scheduling. Straightforward and clean GUI is very welcomed, but is a bit confusing at first since there is no labels for the icons.

A great beginning to maybe one of the next top bittorrent client. Keep up the good job guys. I'll be keeping an eye on its devellopment.

To Program86: I don't use this program.. but I understand the backlash against CPU/RAM intensive programs... I mean yeah sure... with modern PC's, it's not really a big deal. But, it is. Programs like Azereus really do hinder performance when you need it.. like during folding, gaming, emulation, media conversion, etc. A simple downloader application shouldn't be raping your computers performance... there are a ton of more serious programs that have that agenda. Anyway, I've never used this program, I'm a long time uTorrent fan, but I support any program that follows the uTorrent philosophy of coding.

Waa Waa Waa, all I hear is "takes up too much space this, and takes too much RAM that"... What are you guys running????? A P3 600, 4GB HD and 128MB of RAM????
For christ sake, buy a new computer if you cant run modern programs. Quit whining like little children when you have only yourself to blame.

I want to start out with saying that I have NOT tried this. I am a loyal uTorrent user.
Still it is nice to see people make software dont dont fill out 10mb. This download comes at 500kb, not as little as uTorrent but still.

It seems to be lightweight, and have the most important options in front of you.

Yes it is indeed a large program considering its minimal feature set when compared to uTorrent.

LyyNx: Even on *nix operating systems I don't see this competing with uTorrent, seeing as how uTorrent runs perfect on most *nix OSes using wine.

quite nice client.. very few features and i'd say a little too much of ram usage for what it offers.. this certainly isn't a competitor for utorrent but if there was linux version of this (open source afterall..) it would be very popular i think
