The only reason I ever used this messenger was because it was the first instant messenger on the internet literally, and I used to play Ultima Online, which is arguable still one of the better MMOs out there in comparison of features and rules sets.

and well I despise this after they forced a password policy change and if you were using a 3rd party messenger you didn't get a notification about the password policy change and you got locked out of your account.

ICQ 6.5 as with 6.0 is essentially the same bloatware. We (ICQ users) want it to be slim, fast and take less then 10Mb ram at any given time. Can you manage that? well you could with 5.1... so WTF? it should take now 60-80Mb and work so slow? Disappointing.

Oh well, still got 5.1 (yes, it can be still used).

rotjong

ICQ was great when Mirabilis owned it. Once AOL acquired Mirabilis things just headed downhill. Slow release cycles. Buggy releases. The program became enormously bloated. AOL finally went the Lite route but they went too far the other direction and left out important features. AOL killed off the use of ICQ for the vast majority of people who once loved it. The new look is interesting but I'd prefer more normal than flashy. I still have my old original UIN. I've moved on to other things. I remember when MSN Messenger was garbage and ICQ was awesome. Now Windows Live Messenger is hands and shoulders above ICQ. AOL doomed ICQ when it became the owner of two IM clients (AIM & ICQ) and effectively brought about the death of ICQ as a competitor in the IM universe.

I've used the newer versions including this one. It works. It still has the basic characteristics of the original program. I moved on. I'm rating this a 3 because it does what is intended. I can't give higher because I feel the product is inferior to what it should be given its history and what it could be if they spent more time working on it. I would like to give it a lower mark but I cannot because it does do what it is supposed to.

I was one of the early users of ICQ and my first IM program with its unique "uh-oh" notification sound. It was hip, it was cool, now its just unwanted. Most have moved on to other IM programs or a unified one. I know those on my list left it so I left it though my signon might still work.
It looks nice enough but not needed anymore.

Another perfectly good program until AOL got a hold of it and screwed the whole thing up. You would think that AOL would finally get a clue seeing how all they touch turns to disaster, but oh well guess not. In the meantime we have this pile of junk...if you wanna keep on ICQ it's worthless to stay with their client...

I don't use ICQ nor do i know people who use it. But i download it from time to time just to see how its going. Its been pretty bad for a long time. This version is def. allot better. Not sure with the bad rating here. But i still like Yahoo msgr the best. I like the interface. Seems to have most features the other im's have. I always see stats on who has the browser lead, the operating system lead. I never see who leads the im race anymore. Used to be aim and icq lead back in the day. If anyone has this info. please put it out....

DozerRC2

DozerRC2 reviewed v6.0 Build 5352 on Apr 18, 2007

Basically i like the new features...
but there are some things i don't like...

a) though i install it in another directory it deletes the old version without asking
b)it appears in taskbar and not just in tray as before...
c)the unread message feature is rather anoying as if someone starts a conversation with me the first message he sends to me doesn't appear in the conversation window but in the "Unread Messages" were it blinks all the time until u hit the "X"
d)if you close the conversation window the current conversation history disappears...
i mean i disabled history but in icq 5 it was possible though to seen what u had writen in this conversation...

I think these are little bugs that can be solved easily.. and i hope they're solved soon...

Stupid AOL! Icq was going to take over the world of instant messaging. Right upon til they canceled ICQ Pro. That program was really King of IM. FIlestransfers where so good. Drag and drop folders everything you wanted back in 2002.

Messenger is good, but they have alot to learn from ICQ Pro. The Offlineservers dont work to good in MSN LIVE, sending folders and files is a pain in the a** too.
But still, everybody I know have put ICQ i the grave. Thats where it belongs =/

As usual, AOL kill software it purchased. First Netscape, now ICQ. Winamp is still alive, at least Lite version.

I hope that they will do similar to ICQ what they did with Netscape, set it free (Mozilla). Since original ICQ client keep getting worse each new edition

improvelence

RIP ICQ 1996-? 2000 maybe? well AOL got it in 98...hmmm

Joco

Joco reviewed v5.10 Build 3000 on Jul 11, 2006

Not only ICQ popularity is shrinking, AOL has the bad idea to add ads. Since the last 4 years. I didn't have any contact requesting ICQ.

@Zankur: Miranda is infinitely better than this ICQ client. Miranda is multi-protocols, no ads, customizable and, in my opinion, better than native client as all the useless bloat features are cut down.

You should probably an AOL user. Any program having more than one button or one menu item becomes too complex.

I still use ICQ 99b or Trillian.

Another perfectly good program slaughtered by AOL.
Set RANT on:
Used to be the #1 IM chat proggy out there...now AOL has turned this thing into a giant banner ad with a tiny application squezed inside it.
Remember the good ole' days with the ICQ ActiveServers? Yeah AOL shut those down without even telling us. I had 100's of fellow programmers using mine...then one day "poooof" - all gone.
I could go on for a few more hours, but what's the point? AOL has proven they could care less about their users, all they care about is their advertisers! BOooo AOL!
Set RANT off.

Kompressor

Kompressor reviewed v5.1 Build 2575 on May 22, 2006

Even though I believe ICQ was the best IM client ever, the IDs run off a numbering system, so all day long I get spammers trying to add me to their contact list and all day long I'm declining them which makes ICQ too much of a nuisance to use.

DaveNCheez

DaveNCheez reviewed v5.1 Build 2573 on May 10, 2006

BB88

BB88 reviewed v5.1 Build 2573 on May 10, 2006

ICQ is still my primary IM. I know many people have switched to MSN, but without offline messaging, I think it really lacks something... how many programmers Microsoft has compared to ICQ? (I know AOL bought it, but I wonder if they allocate much staff to continue the development).

And... most IM from the big companies put ads on it, and you can just get some hack tools to take them away. No big deal to me.

I'm still using the good old 2003b!

Sabz

Sabz reviewed v5.1 Build 2573 on May 10, 2006

i gave it a 3 because it was the first app that gave us all File sharing an i had no problems with icq at all while i used the client, . question is whats happening to ICQ Compad? now they release icqlite 5.1 i dont get it, someone says Windows Live messenger 8 is the go now.. WLM8 is full of bloat an look at its HUGE File Size. 15MB? among the Memory leak it has . but dont worry thats a built in feature :) all i can see is people downloading trillian just to use there favorite IM's

If you need a dumbed-down IM client, then ICQ is not for you. It may not be the most popular now that the masses are online and refuse to think, but ICQ is still the best stand-alone IM client available. The others lack basic features that ICQ has had for years now. As reflected by their evaluations, it really is too bad ICQ is far beyond 90% of ordinary PC users. ICQ is champagne. All other stand-alone clients are cheap wine.

Freeware means it's free for the user, it doesn't matter that the company might be making money off of it (and I highly doubt they are, since the ads might be simply paying for the server costs and maintenance).

You don't have to pay a dime for this, hence it's free.

Yet another program labelled as "Freeware" that has ads. Last time I checked freeware meant the developers don't make a profit (except from donations perhaps). When you shove ads down people's throats, it's no longer freeware. I refuse to review or use a piece of software which flat out lies to its users. Then again, what can you expect from AOL the lumbering dinosaur? Put it out of its misery already. Don't bother with this piece of crap, get a *real* free alternative like Miranda.

Pipewrench

Pipewrench reviewed v5.02 Build 2309 on Feb 7, 2005

Not bad. I really like it. I've been using ICQ since the beginning days. I realize that it's more "bloated" than the original but it also has more features. Personally I don't get into the xTraz crap. That's for 14 year old kids.

Right now I use Yahoo! Messenger because it has no ads. I would like to use the banner killer on the link below but I'm a bit skeptical about downloading .exe files from places I don't know. Can anyone vouch for this being ONLY an ad removal program?

Other than the ads, I really like it. Now that I can use Enter to send the message that does it for me. I would run ICQ all the time if I could. I just don't have that many people on it :-)

Cheers,
Pipewrench

I like ICQ but.. While I was installing this latest version it set off my virus scanner 5 times. I'm sure it's a false positive however can you imagine how your Grandma would react? I can't recommend this to anyone who doesn't understand how virus scanner heuristics think.

The file which set off the scanner multiple times was:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\ICQLITE\ICQLITEUNINSTALL.EXE

No I'm not using the best Antivirus program, but it's kept me safe so far. It's one of those free versions. AntiVir Personal Edition. My heuristic scanning is set to the default level.

Okey I can agree that this program is slow and have alott of futures that I dont need but I cant but this "this is not freeware this is adware - try miranda". Do you know why I have a "remove bann" link in top of this review? Yes! Becose it removes the Bann!

So dont write "this is not a freeware" becose there is crack for this. The whole program cant be bad just becose it isnt "freeware"!

And why Im not using Trillian ore Miranda is just becose I only use ICQ, no Yahoo, MSN and other programs.

ICQ can be better but its not sooo bad.

I have concluded that AOL does what it wants even if it makes a once proud and good product into a bloated nightmare that is insecure, bloated, slow and ugly...(how many numbers are they at now??)) I too had 6 and Mirablis still had a decent IM. Good ol AOL buys it to infuse cash for it's monster growth of users and perhaps to add a feature or two. Leave it to AOL to clog the drain with things that are poorly designed with little or no use. add it all up and ICQ has not improved with time. It has shifted to profit focus instead of user satisfaction. Look what good things AOL did for AOL-Time/Warner, they ummm er they...Oh yes they removed AOL from the official name and a good choice it was.

I say unless future versions improve and slim down it may be a matter of time until this IM sits next to Plymouth, TWA and Texaco.

For all of you others: Go back and use the 3800 build... (while icq is closed) delete the ICQHttp.dll, remove the "ateBrowser" directory, and make a readonly file in icq called "ateBrowser"... regedit and change the HK_LM\Software\Mirabilis\ICQ\ICQPro\AutoUpdate to "no".....
Then take and disable all the extra buttons... and voila you have the icq99 kind of look back.....
For the others who wants this new build will have to wait for/hope for that the ppl over at www.allicq.com to "fix" this new build so that the ads don't display :)

I suspect that these ICQ updates are nothing more than updates to the advertisement engine. I find ICQ "Pro" (and what a joke of a name) to be unstable, not configurable enough, quirky, and buggy. If I reboot my router, ICQ crashes on my wireless client machine. It really is a complete piece of garbage. The only reason I use the ICQ protocol at all is because it's so entrenched and popular (just try convincing everyone of your contacts to switch to something else). I've switched to Miranda IM, and it's much better so far. [BTW, to rid yourself of the ads in ICQ, rename or delete the files icqateima32.dll, icqateimg32.dll, and icqateres.dll.]

2. STILL DOES not have VIDEO CHAT built into it! Come on AOL yer falling behind here!
3. Speaking of AOL I guess it has AIM interlopability. What happened to that court order when AOL bought ICQ that said they couldnt combine the two? Anyone remember that? What's this a loophole to what the Federal Trade Commision told them or what?
4. Banner ads in interface - yuck but eaisly avoidable with ICQPlus.
5. Other than these things I still think its the best. Servers or more reliable than others and it supports offline messaging - only Yahoo does that now - and it has built in video chat now two.

1. First off, I can't get my keyboard shortcuts like I used to have them, especially Ctrl+Shift+I to get my messages and for some reason I can't put it back to that anymore.

2. The whole close/minimize thing: I liked it the way they first had it in 2002a similar to other IM clients. It seems like I have to click a dozen times to get my contact list up.

3. Maybe I should use Trillian but even that isn't perfect yet.

Greywolf

Greywolf reviewed v2002a Beta Build #3727 on Apr 19, 2002

I agree, Trillian is by far the best program and it's all I basically use, but my gf is still stuck on using the individual Messenger programs, so I upgraded to the latest ICQ to check it out. It fixes the taskbar thing, when it's minimized to the system tray the icon becomes an indented button, and when it's open(either on top or behind other windows) the icon looks normal, and nothing on the taskbar. It also defaults itself to "always on top" but that is easily changed. The first time you use the "X" button it explains the different exit modes. Apprently the close button makes messeges appear in the system tray, and the minimize button makes messages appear in the task bar. It looks like the only way to shut down the program is still from the main menu. Overall I think it's improved since the last version, though I still think there should be an option for the close button to shut down the program. Also I'm wondering what files to delete to get rid of the ads. If anyone wants to reply on that subject, great :)

A way to remove those ADs: after a clean icq install, BEFORE the first time you connect to icq (close it if it starts automatically), go to the icq directory and remove (move) the icqhttp.dll file. worked fine for me with all icg2000a/b versions.

The thing is, it doesn't take up any cpu usage worth mentioning.. I wrote the program becouse, just like you, I was tired of cpu demanding info meters. A info meter shouldn't take 3-5% (No graphs and stuff like that, as you maybe noticed) On my cel 400 it takes less then 0.5% (taskmanager is rounding it down to zero so i don't know exact how much)
Its sits on the taskbar, no floating window in your way that takes up deskspace.. Hell, use autohide on the taskbar and gain space.. If you got any ideas how to improve it, please send me a mail and I would love to see if its "fixable". best regards / Gustaf aka Cure

Well, I haven't really used the 200x series of ICQ so I can't make a comment on it. Been using ICQ99 for the past 3 years. No hassles, no troubles. But, I have something to say about people who are worried about ads. In my opinion, companies are trying to get something back from the users by offering these free chat tools like ICQ. Hence, ads are being displayed in ICQ so they can make $$$$.

I just went to trillian's site, installed it and using it (as we speak) and I must admit, its pretty good! They got ICQ/AOL/YM/MSN MESS all in one program, instead of the user downloading each seperate program. Of course, very "compact" and less stress on the CPU and memory.

But there's a downside though. Can they really "exist" a while longer? The programmers of Trillian are doing this for free and getting nothing in return but minimal donations trying to maintain their servers or whatever equipment to keep Trillian running and keep producing newer versions of it.

With ICQ, that's what they are doing with their ads, trying to make money so they can run ICQ and maintain it / produce newer versions of it / etc. etc.

One of these days, ICQ may start charging the users just to keep it alive..

oh well... if you don't agree.. bah... its just my two cents....

Well, I haven't used this version of ICQ yet, and I never plan to. Why? Because I use Trillian (www.trillian.cc). Trillian is a cost-free, ad-free, skinable IM and IRC client. It suppports Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN, and AIM by default, and is extensible so you can easily add support for other IM services. If you're sick of the bloat of ICQ or the hassle of having to use several IM clients simultaneously, check out Trillian. I don't think you'll be dissappointed!

For those interested in what the changes actually are, the only things I can see are:

A pretty button on the standard warning when you first install it, and a slight change to the way SMS numbers are entered.

As a matter of interest - has anyone else noticed that a banner was added to the top of ICQ yesterday? (advertising the SMS facilities). For those who'd like to remove it, just delete the ICQ\Partner directory before starting ICQ. It will put it back within a minute of starting ICQ, so you'll need to delete it every time (I've created a script that deletes it then starts ICQ).

This is much better than the versions of AOL ( Canada ) I have used in the past. The address book, email and downloading functionality ( which were my pet peeves ) is vastly improved over 5.0 I cannot comment on IE 5.5 , simply because I use a browserless build of AOL and use IE5 under 98SE and had problems with IE5.5 under ME.

I have had no problems installing it on either 98SE or Millenium and few problems running it. ( I did have a graphics disply problem in ME , but I suspect that this was due to incompatable video card drivers under ME/WindwBlinds and had nothing to do with AOL )

You s***s that are complaining about 6MB can go to hell. Hard drives are bigger than 10 Gig's and modem speeds are increasing rapidly. If your complaining about size then either your extremely stupid or your computer is a piece of s***.

Someone posted a link to a utility that will you show the IP of UINs on your contact list (you enter a UIN of someone on your list, if they are online it shows the IP of that contact). You can probably browse old news about ICQ2000 and still find the link.

Major bummer that you can't view IP addresses for users on your contact list. Looks like the blank spot is there on the main users info tab, wonder if there's a switch or hack to enable it.

The message archive is located here ftp://ftp.icq.com/pub/ICQ_Win95_98_NT4/ICQ2000a/ICQMessageArchive.exe

As for this release of icq itself... well, I can't disable the plugins. It just re-enables them as soon as I restart the program, which is pretty lame. The new e-mail interface is just flat out horrible, and I can't find an option to restore the old one on automatic checks (manual checks still use the old one, go figure).

Otherwise, its not a bad release.

1. Could be better. Bloatware is the only term that applies. I don't mind the 6 meg download, but 5 megs of RAM ? Come on. There's alot of features that alot of people do not want and do not need. All these are doing is hogging valuable resources (and yes, even with 256 megs of RAM, resources can still a problem due to my heavy load...). What they need to do is allo the user to select what features to install and what not to. i.e. I don't need a calendar. That's what I have Outlook for.

2. Something that's always annoyed me: There needs to be an option to exit by right-clicking on the systray icon. It can be very annoying to have to open the window to exit the program.

3. Definite improvement over last build. Wouldn't even run after install over a previous build of 2000a on my comp. Oh well. At least this time it worked....

Fantastic for a free program that doesn't bombard you with stupid banners. Yes, I remember when ICQ was only 300k, but being a developer myself I know that in order to add new features, size increases. I doubt ICQ will get much bigger, it's reaching its "size & feature plateau".

Back in the day icq use to be really good then AOL bought it and decided they didnt want to have another program that was better than there AIM so they bought it, and now they are taking it apart from the inside. They are trying to make it where you would pick the 2 meg download of AIM over the 6 meg download of AIM. They need make a lite version of ICQ, or have an option to download the Features you want. I just have to sometimes (quite often) double click twice (quadrupleclick!) on the user on my contact list to pop up a message box. The "disconnection detected" thingie also doesn't seem to pop up on my box, even when I actually get disconnected ! Pfft! I personally think 99's were the best, not that bloated with features that hardly anybody would ever need. In case you're wondering, I'm the same guy who made QCI 2000. Now since I have a full time job and stuff, I don't find time to make freeware, so I'm thinking of making QCI 'open source'. Lemme see what kind of a response this would generate...:-)

My personal experience with this new beta drivers have not been good at all. When you first go to install the drivers it says they are not digitially signed and it recommends you do not install them. I decided to test the beta anyway and installed them. When the computer restarts it will not accept any higher resolution and only returns that there is an error with the driver. I do NOT recommend installing this new driver.

I have 2 things to say, first off you can change the way it looks, so that it doesn't have a cluttered interface, you can even remove most all buttons so it is less cluttered then 99a-b!

Normal use is exactly what It does NOT alow, For example: I have friends that host ftp sites, its not uncommon, but most of them have there ip address changed every month, so they would alow there ip address to be seen, so that people on there list don't keep bugging them "whats your new ip" or so that they don't have to tell everyone when it changes, ICQ 2000 simply does NOT let you see it nomatter what!

To everyone that complains about the cluttered interface. I too did not like the extra things on the Contact List in 99a or 99b. The search, active lists, and such. Some of that stuff could be turned off, but it was not the easiest to figure out where the checkboxes were that turned them off. In 2000a All of the option for the contact list are in one spot in the prefrences and are easy to understand. All I have is the contact list and system notice, ICQ, and Online buttons, just like the old ICQ. If you like the new features, they are there. If you don't you can turn them off. I think this a major improvement. Load time did not seem long. I haven't checked resource use. I am definitely going to be using this version. I think interface wise, this is the best ICQ.

Firstly, thank you BadMojo069 for clearing up what this discussion should be. Onto my experiences with ICQ2000a, I haven't run into any problems running it on Win2k. To combat the arguments about a cluttered interface, although, yes, the default interface is quite busy, I've found even more options in 2000a (in Preferences|Contact List|Design) to turn off interface elements and in fact leave a simplier interface than I could in 99b. The winning feature for me which leaves 2000a on my system is the new persistant message dialog that behaves a little like chatting in ICQ mode. It's not original, however it is convenient and it's easier to migrate to 2000a than to migrate all of my friends to another service. Be sure to also grab the Message Archive plugin from the ICQ alpha homepage at http://www.icq.com/alpha to restore the message archive functionality in 2000a to view saved chats, etc. Not perfect, but certainly not bad.

I do think they could got for a better looking GUI, but hey its a freebie [unless AOL gets greedy] so I am not going to complain too much about the interface. They finally put some of the onboard utilities where you can find them much easier and if you have ICQ+, LOOK FOR IT right next to the resize button at the top of the app and in other icq windows that open. To all of you who complain that ICQ is too "bloated": stop whining. Get a bigger hard drive and more RAM. To all of you who complain about crashes: ICQ 2000a is an ALPHA version. It is far from complete. If you download it you are supposed to test for bugs and report them. To all of you who think Odigo is better: Fine! Go use Odigo, but stop telling us about it. You're supposed to review the ICQ 2000 alpha, not tell us what is better. If you don't like ICQ then stop using it. I am sick of hearing you complaining when you should be reviewing. Sure, a review can say negative things about a program, but some of you are trashing it with no good reason. ICQ 2000a works fine on my computer in Windows 98. I have had no crashes and seen no bugs thusfar. Some of you may have problems with the program, but many of you are bent on turning people away from ICQ and toward your favorite Chat/Instant Message program. If you find a bug, report it. If you don't like ICQ, don't use it and stop complaining!

Yes ICQ may be a larger donwload, but it uses less system resources than ODIGO...I checked both out, Odigo uses more memory, more USER and GDI resources...it's currently a HOG. Plus, Odigo doesn't have all the great features that I've come to depend on in ICQ, like the sticky notes, the popup boxes for people that I choose(instead of having to always have the damn main window open). ICQ is still the best, I do wish they'd try to lean things down, but 5MB download isn't THAT bad...you get what you wait for!:)

I am having connection problems with Icq2000a, online users are not on the online list! I can send chat requests but I can not receive them. I have a single SDSL connection using Win2K ICS via LAN. Am I having IP problems? But I thought MS-ICS has NAT built in, and besides I never had this problem with Icq99b! Well, I guess back to 99b.
For those who would like to go back to 99b, just turn off 2000a and reinstall 99b on top of it, works perfect, I know because I have allready tried it on Win95/98/98SE/2000 pcs on my network.
I can tell you that Icq2000a still needs a lot of work folks, so just wait a bit longer.
Cheers.

Ok, I'm not sure if the newest build is any different than the first release, but I have had continuous problems with the first alpha under Win2k. Everything appears to work correctly, however, I had a problem with it refreshing my list. It would not update and I would have to disconnect and reconnect to the server before the people would refresh. Since there were very few differences that I noticed, I just switched back to 99b. If anyone else has had this problem and knows how to fix it please let me know.

ok i dont get all these negative comments, icq2k on w2k final worked flawlessly for me, it installed right, it converted my 99db right, it signs just right, the only downside is that even with most useless pluggins stripped a aside, it still eats up 8.5mb of mem, although the ui has improved somewhat and there r more tweaking options.. this version is deffinately better than 99b imo

This program is awesome!! I've been using this program for 2 years now. It is WAY faster than ANY other AntiVirus program. The installation is only 5mb compared to Norton 2000 which is 15mb. This program loads really fast in startup unlike Norton which loads up in 10 seconds. Save Time and Hard Drive SPACE!!

ICQ 2000 have a lot of bugs. You can only install the version when u have sign up the setup routine at the right time. They closed after a vie days open the testing project. If you have registered your icq number at the time the project was running you can install icq any time only with a crack patch e.q. from astalavista.box.sk thats the only way. When u have allready installed ICQ a windows system file or anything like this change and from a lot of ftp and http adresses you cant not longer listen directorys on a lot of servers. This meens you get no access to many of file archives with all possible ftp browsers and downloadmanagers too. I test and found the same problem with win98, every build up to the newest beta of Windows Millennium and all Win 2000 builds up to the final release.
Better you use the old ICQ 99 version. Cause the problems are still there when u deinstall ICQ 2000. The only way you format and delate the operating system to clean up all problems who comes from ICQ 2000 setup. Forget it at this time guys wait for a betterbuild of ICQ 2000.

Only thing I can think of is MAKE SURE YOUR ICQ SERVER is not icqalpha.mirabilis.com - use icq2.mirabilis.com or icq.mirabilis.com for your server - the alpha server will boot you off unless you registered before ICQ stopped allowing new users on. I don't know if this will work in all cases but I have helped a few other people get on with it using that method.

As a webmaster, I have to agree that Netscape browsers are completely horrible to design for. They render many things unexpectedly or off by a few pixels. In today's web, we need all the control we can get to make a decent looking page and Netscape makes that tough. When Mozilla 5 gets here it could be a very different story though.

Alrighty, I have downloaded the files provided by cobranest and the installation worked great. However when I log on, I get emediately knocked off saying that the the alpha version is restricted. Am I stuck now? I was under the impression that the restriction was in the install program and everything would be ok once I installed, I guess not. I don't imagine there's a way I can revert back to 99b? I would appreciate it if someone could let me know what I need to do. I guess if all else fails I'll be uninstalling and reinstalling with my backup of 99b. Thanks ahead of time!

I don't what's up with most of the people here. I downloaded it on my 56K just fine, installed it just fine, converted my database from 99b 3.19 just fine, and it's been running just fine. It crashed once soon after install but never since. I will however admit it's quite bloated, but I have my entire ICQ directory (excluding my database fodler) down to a size of approx. 8M... I can deal with that. It seems to load a tad slower than 99b 3.19... but I can deal witht hat too... this machien is only a P90 with 64M of RAM after all. I don't like most of the new features... the Quick Launch bar thing is quite annoying I think... the menus are kind of funky... they don't seem to allow you to take the three button bars off your contact list... and to get rid of the ICQ Today and Mail buttons at the top, you also have to lose the Online, Group, And ActiveList View buttons... these last two are what annoy me most. This is an alpha though, so it's not set in stone... it's a test version... changes will be made before it becomes a beta.... or so I hope because I turned in a whole list of things to them. One thing I thought was kinda funny... ICQ no longer lets you make it extra skinny... in fact, the min width of ICQ 2000a Build 3060 v.4.18 is now exactly the same as the min width of AIM v.3.5.1670... neat. For those who advocate AIM over ICQ... don't worry, in another year or so they'll be the same thing. ICQ gets AIM's color... AIM gets ICQ's file transfer... ICQ gets AIM's non-removeable logo at the top (for future advertisements no doubt... they want you to get used to having something there)... AIM adds voice chat... ICQ gets a stupid "My Contact List" label like AIM's "My AIM" and "'s Buddy List"... AIM gains an Offline group... scary. I've been using ICQ for quite a while... if anyone wants ICQ 1.113 Beta, I have it. ;)

It still got that memory load problem yup! Maybe some one should tell the developers that it's going to far away with this! Otherwise it pretty loaded with all kind of features (which raise pretty much its functionality but their arrangements messes a bit with the ergonomy and usability). Since it's an alpha version I guess we will have to wait and see what will come out of it!
Till then you all IM fans should try a really nice piece of software, somehow an ICQ Clone, but better "furnished" and build than ICQ, named Odigo. Find it at www.odigo.com!
BTW: The developers are Israelian! Humm... ICQ is too Israelian at its origins! I wonder...

I thought it was pathetic when 99b used 7.5 megs of ram and 4.5 megs of swap. Now 2000 uses 12.5 megs of ram and 5.5 megs of swap. That is ridiculous. If you are going to add all this other crap to an instant messenger at least make it modular. So if I dont want it it isn't sucking up all my systems resources.

This version starts 50% faster on my system than 99b, sure it is bloated as hell, but then again, mirabilis, and AOL are going on the faith that people are using at least 48mb of ram. From what I've seen it's an interesting new look, the biggest change in the GUI ever. And while ICQ has become extremely bloated, (The first versions fit on a floppy, ICQ 2000 is 5 megs) It still does instant messaging better than any other program.

AIM reminds me of Win vs Linux a little. People who like win like things to be easy but they do not control what they are doing while Linux users are in control of what they want/need. After all if you just want simple chat call someone :) it does not get any easier
