Internet Explorer Popup Control lets you take control of popup and popunder windows instead of them taking control of your desktop. The Popup Control loads in the background and you don't even know it's there until it does its job. You can choose to allow popup windows, disallow (deny) popup windows, or have Internet Explorer prompt you each time a popup window tries to load. Some sites use popup windows for practical uses. For this reason, the "Prompt" option is the default option. You can change the settings under the "Advanced" tab in your Internet Options property sheet, available from the control panel or the "Tools->Options" menu in Internet Explorer. You can get a description for each in the options under "Browsing/Popup Control" by right-clicking and selecting "What's this?".
The Popup Control was designed as a browser helper object (BHO) to be light-weight and respond to any new window event, including scripted popup windows and new, non-existing target windows for links. It monitors each instance of Internet Explorer individually and will not hinder your browsing experience except for stopping popup windows from taking over your desktop.

Nice idea but IE Popup Control needs "memory". There are a handful of legitimate popups that I want to allow and I get the prompt every time I go those sites. This product would work better if it remembered what your last response was and if there was a way to edit those responses.

Installs quick, easy to configure, and gets rid of all those pesky pop windows (as far as I'm concerned, none of them are legit, just annoying) Default setting is to prompt user, I just went into the IE Control Panel, Advanced, and turned them all off.

Don't waste time to try it. It is large and stupid. I found one with intelligence, Zero Popup, much better. FYI, it is also published in Beta News. Try search Zero Popup

Regarding the last issue posted and to all who download this - you can customize whether or not popups are allowed, disallowed, or be prompted. It's in the "Advanced" tab in the Internet Options. This literally handles events generated by window.open and target attributes in tags such as "_new"; anything that causes a new window to be opened. It is meant to be light-weight and not have a clunky GUI associated with it for the kind of configuration politenessman mentions. It's a way to eliminate popups using the IE DOM and event sinks, the methods and events exposed by the interface.

A suggestion to the author for improving this potentially great tool -- it would be very helpful if the software could automatically distinguish between popups that are hardcoded into webpages [i.e. annoying ads shoved down our throats without our permission] and *legitimate* popups which are simply pages opening in new windows. Many websites open *all* their links in new windows, but the IE Popup Control dialogue box comes up every time -- very intrusive, slows down navigation. Possible to work around this?

Sorry for the inconvenience, folks. As the author of the control, I tried uploading the file to betanews.com but the upload failed twice and used my mirror connection to my server as the primary download. My upload speed is limited and as all of you who have downloaded it thus far can see, it's *extremely* slow. It is now hosted in my MSN Community at http://communities.msn.com/PopupControl/ and I hope the formerly slow speeds does not affect your opinion: I hope you like it! Enjoy!
