Pros: I came to use Joomla when I needed to build a web based portal for my company to organize internal resources and data. While I can't call myself a Linux guru, it really took me 15 minutes to get my initial Joomla website up and running. Instructions are very clear and simple. Joomla was my first CMS product to evaluate. While it did take me a couple of days to understand it's structure, from that point, building a website was as easy as 123. Everything is visual. You don't have to be a great programmer / web developer to get along with this product. With the amount of available free and paid plugins, sky is really your limit to your web site customization. While my website was fairly simple (as that's the way I wanted to have it), I've seen examples of very complex high end websites, built on Joomla. My favorite feature is a backup. It so happened several times, that I managed to break my website. Restoring from a backup and going back live was so easy, it was hard to believe. Provided this was a totally free solution (Ubuntu Linux + Joomla CMS), I couldn't ask for a better software for my project.

Cons: Really nothing. Like I said it did take me a couple of days to understand how to add content and structure it, but once this was figured out, the rest was a breeze.

Bottom Line: Not only I learned something new, which I've never known before, I was also able to present a great looking product to a higher level management, which really didn't cost company a penny.

Tis very good for CMS sites and can grow with your needs, on the minus side: it stinks with SEO and for the end user, a steep learning curve awaits.

We have Server 2008 and we have provide Joomla one click install service for our customers. Setting up on Server 2008 wasn't complicated. We are using PHP Fast CGI setting.

I wouldn't dare touch this probably ever, after reading the joomla forum security issues, such as:
"Doing things 2 or 3 times only to have some turkish or persian teenager hack it gets real old, real quick. I guess there really is something to doing it yourself.

I give this a 1 for the simple reason that I have WANTED to review the product for well over a month, but their online demo site is "offline" yet, and it still refers to version 1.5rc1 on the demo page, meaning this hasn't been updated in ages (and likely will not be).

Sure, I could install locally, but I really just wanted to check it out online to see if it would be worth a detailed onsite review. I'm sure I am not the only one looking at the product site and then just leaving when I can't view a demo. Seems prudent to put the demo online if you are going to publish a news-release that would attract potential users.

Joomla is the most easy to use, if not the best, CMS available right now. It's good on its own, but with new components and "Mambots" you can do practically everything that big-name sites like MySpace, CNN, or *****tube are doing. Unlike Wordpress, it's not blog-centric, and unlike Drupal, you don't have to be a PHP programmer to use it effectively.

There truly is very little competition for the new 1.5 of Joomla. All the work done in just little over a year since the split from Mambo is amazing. I like Drupal and give it high marks also but it is not nearly as complete a system as Joomla. I usually don't review a project (yes, shame on me) but, I had to rebut several of Ian C. comments below. First, Joomla has a real backend (unlike Drupal which cannot make up its mind - you Drupal users know what I mean), secondly SEF (search friendly urls) are built-in into 1.5 just turn them on in the config; not to mention that there are probably a dozen free add-ons (and several commercial ones too) for the current 1.0.13. The developer community for Joomla is much larger than any other system (see extensions.joomla.org). Most if not all those supposed commercial extensions have nothing comparable at Drupal or any other open CMS (most offer free versions of their products also). Yes, there a some things that other systems do better (not many) but for all its worth Joomla is hands down the best out there right now and Joomla 1.5 cements this fact even more so. I will admit, the one negative aspect about 1.5 is going the upgrade path from the current 1.0 code. In my opinion (and others) this is will not be as fluid as I would have liked but never-the-less it looks to worth the small hassle that users may encounter.

Joomla is decent, I used it for several years, even before it branched off from Mambo. However it is very slow compared to lots of other CMS web apps. Not only that, but unfortunately many of the big closed source/commercial modules followed it over from Mambo. For example, it doesn't have clean URL's natively, and if you want a module that does that, the only one available is a commercial product :(. Also the development is extremely slow, and I would attribute that to the outrageously huge and unorganized/monolithic code base.

I found Drupal (www.drupal.org) not to long ago, which is also an open source CMS. I would recommend everyone try Drupal. With Drupal making new templates from scratch takes days, not weeks like it does with Joomla. Drupal has built in clean URL support, not to mention lots of other things Joomla only has as addons, a much cleaner admin interface, and a much much smaller and more organized code base, not to mention blazing fast development.

Edit: actually upon reviewing the Joomla addon site, it appears that a large portion of the addons are commercially licensed. Which is definately worth bumping this review down from a 3 to a 2. I had no idea that much of the commercial/closed source community had followed Joomla.

Joomla! is one of the best available! Forget managing your website by hand... let Joomla! do all the work. Hundreds upon hundreds of extensions available (extensions.joomla.org) to make Joomla! work for you.

It's worth a try, especially for personal or corporate websites! (Oh, and it is free too!)

Your review is somewhat inaccurate. In the 1.5 (beta 2) you reviewed, it supports Search-Engine-Friendly (SEF) URLs. Simply enable it in the Configuration.

There are about 10x free extensions for Joomla compared to Commercial extensions. Although I'm not one to heavily use commercial extensions, I would see it as a positive sign that commercial developers see Joomla as a worthy CMS. The flexibility and ease of use is a major drawing factor for Joomla, including commercial extension developers.
