It's usable, but not impressive one bit. Everything seemed to be excessively slow. I was viewing the same site on 3 different browsers and K-Meleon was the slowest. Probably downloads chrome or firefox really well.
cltx99 reviewed v75.0 on Jun 26, 2015
I found K-Meleon to be rather confusing and scattered. There seemed, to me, to be a lack of cohesiveness. I was unable to transfer any of my bookmarks from Firefox. It was far easier to use when it first came out years ago. Anyway, I'm not impressed and it surely doesn't warrant a five star rating. I haven't the time for a new learning curve.

I use to use this as my favorite browser for websites that it worked with - 15 years ago, I'm completely psyched that it's still around and updated. Time to install and see if it's as great as it use to be !!!!

The best browser I know. My favourite and default one for many years.
Lightweight (most of the whole modern browsers pool), customizable, instructive and didactic.
A lot of computing fun!

Light weight, and very fast browser. The only issue that I have, it crashes when I close out of it on my WinXP SP3 machine.

I have latest versions installed for Firefox, Opera, Safari, K-meleon, & Chrome. K-meleon is by far the fastest of these on my particular computer (XP SP3) - your mileage may vary.
I have run this latest alpha for almost a week now, with nary a glitch. It seems even faster than prior K-mel versions. WOW!
Highly recommended BUT -- if you try alpha or beta versions of any software, then: (a) be sure to image your system drive before trialing, and (b) expect to deal with some issues along the way.

Very fast, probably the fastest browser around the web today! NO Opera is not fast and NO neither is Safari, which is a poor attempt for a browser.
K-Meleon works really good with almost any hangups or freezes what so ever, plays anything anywhere superb, and is the first of the Gecko browser after Netscape Navigator. So the producers have had a long time of correcting and testing all to nearly perfection.
I would absolutely prefer this browser b4 all the Chineese IE clones whick sux all of them.
K-Meleon ROCKS!

I thought I'd give k-meleon a try for a couple of days & I have too agree that it's super fast & the interface is good as I like having access too my e-mail client & RSS reader within the browser, The only thing problem I have with k-meleon is that when I'm blogging k-meleon tends too close itself & the loader has a major bug in it which I have reported.
The browser can be complicated for first time users so this program may not be for everyone but all up this is a fantastic browser.

It's faster than any other browser i've ever tried. What else do you really NEED in a browser.
Ad block is a plus as well and the customizeability of this browser is really nice if a little intimidating at first.
It's now the one and only browser i use, it definitely gets the job done.
pforbes reviewed v1.1 on May 23, 2007
Excellent.
I suggest nevertheless some improvements:
- An easier configuration.
- Allow setting the tabs in the lower side of the text.
- Allow choosing the toolsbar buttons
- Make it possible to change the order of buttons in the toolsbar buttons row.

Fastest browser! Stable. Effective. Secure. Works great right out of the box, but can be tweaked (if you wish) ad infinitum.
jk- reviewed v1.02 on Feb 15, 2007
A great gecko-based browser (like firefox but alot faster)...
It does actually have native RSS support (Tools -> Mail & News -> Read RSS Feeds).
For userstyles, the Stylish extension works with K-Meleon (check kmeleon forums for info on that).
For userscripts, there is a macro for using them (google search for "kmeleon userscripts" or for "greasify").
kl00 reviewed v1.02 on Jan 15, 2007
Very light and fast; in those areas, on Windows, it reminds me of what I hoped Firefox would be, but never was...or ever will be... ;) Native RSS capabilities would be great, though for me RSS capability doesn't make or break a browser. I'm finding myself using this more and more when running Windows. I'd certainly recommend this over any of the slick IE shells out there.

I have a request ..
user styles from userstyles.org please...unless i've overlooked this.I love styles from there and the greasemonkey scripts that firefox uses with the greasemonkey extension.
I got km working with proximitron...so all is ok right now.
I am having a hard time trying to just adjust the icons on the toolbar...

Very fast and has a small memory footprint, but I find the GUI absolutely annoying, especially in the preferences windows.
adamlau reviewed v1.02 on Sep 23, 2006
Fast rendering and lightweight installation footprint earns this one a 4 out of 5. Dock a point for the fact that this release continues to be a bit tedious to customize.
capandjudy reviewed v1.02 on Sep 22, 2006
While it is not feature laden i.e drag and drop, spell checking, and several other things that you take for granted in Opera and Firefox, it has most of the basic browser functionality, and is quite easy to use, and is extremely fast even on high resource PCs. All of the standard Mozilla plugins are supported also.
wlados reviewed v1.0 on Aug 5, 2006
K-meleon is a nearperfect browser for me. Stable - fast gecko rendering engine. But this lightweight internet browser is without rss feeds and complex bookmark managíng options. Its not perfect its ONLY real good.
Opera 9 and probably Netscape 8.1 are the most complex browsers today:-)

epidote reviewed v1.0 on Jul 20, 2006
Very fast and lightweight I have to say. I have tried almost all the browsers, still having Advant, Maxthon, Mozilla, Opera, on my desktop, this K-Meleon is the latest one that I have added onto my desktop. Comparatively, it's as fast as Advant, and the feeling when it's downloading a website, is pretty sleek and fast and 'effortless'. I have tried the older version, which sometimes got me stuck while trying to download a website, but this one sure work.
Addition: k-meleon recently have a newer version 1.2, I tried that, but immediately decided to switch back to 1.0, as they added more features, but not too great, it'll all remind me of the IE version, which I have stick myself to using maxthon. I prefer, and I will stick to the k-meleon 1.0. Particularly the 'Find' feature, for some reason, I somehow prefer the older type of 'find' feature.
kcalvert reviewed v1.0 on Jul 18, 2006
Very fast browser without the bloat of others. I have found it much faster then IE, Firefox (although I use it a lot), and Opera. If you are not one who likes to tweak to get things just right, this one is not for you. If you don't mind the tweaking and want a basic, fast browser, this one is it.
sQin reviewed v1.0 on Jul 18, 2006
totally agree with HornyToad. Both Opera and K-meleon are good and so fast browsers. But Opera improved much more last few years, has better, more intuitive interface, content blocking option...
HornyToad reviewed v1.0 on Jul 18, 2006
To me, a browser on which you spend more than 30 minutes trying to get the UI just right (where the toolbars are, importing your Faves, etc...), just to realize that you're never going to make it, isn't a good browser. I used to like the speed and feel of K-Meleon 0.9x, but this one is for s**t (pardon my French) ! Moving the toolbars only gets you to a clutter of buttons, layers are atop, your Faves under them, the status bar keeps reappearing each time you open the browser or even a new layer, there's no "spill" icon on the Favorites toolbar, so that half of them are out of reach, and advanced preferences don't give much "advanced" features at all...
So, in all, and strictly IMHO, this K-Meleon is akin to the rest of the Mozilla family : you have to spend more time fine-tuning it that using it. I like Opera for the immediate usability, and the fact that it provides what users seek in a Web browser : the ability to surf the Web, without fuss nor spark...
Moz' boys, keep the old "KISS" acronym in mind when you build a browser, you won't get stuck to a mere 15% on the browser market...

A nice leaner Firefox but it's insane that 1.0 released with the Shift-S bug because it was widely reported in RC2. Fixing accel.cfg is easy but make sure you find the correct copy of this file, and you need to restart the browser AND the loader (if you chose to install the loader) before the fix takes effect.
bellgamin reviewed v1.0 on Jul 17, 2006
Fast. Stable. Works great out of the box, but also can be configured 10 ways to Sunday.
The shift S bug has been fixed. The command is now alt shift S.

K-Meleon 0.9.13 was better in my opinion. This newer version, K-Meleon 1.0 RC2, seems just like 0.9.12 or 0.9.
Nevertheless, it still is a pretty fast browser. Definitely worth using on slower systems.
digitalking reviewed v1.0 RC2 on Jul 5, 2006
4.9 Stars. Someone needs to remove Shift+S as a key macro for showing the status bar. I had to remove it manually from the config file. I could not even type the capital S in this box, until that was removed.
hurzx reviewed v1.0 RC2 on Jul 4, 2006
Excellent. I'm using it as my main browser since last week ( although Opera O9 b8509 is also close to perfect). Some bugs noted however ( as shift+S not working when typing, or the "open new layer" icon crashing the prog) but so fast and light in ressource that I accept them for the moment.
Considering that start I gonna try K-Ninja.

Afterwards disable again, to get the bugfix back for the rest of the Internet.
# Mime Types Editor
# Flashblock can be disabled or enabled in

No complaints-- except that FF is more compatible at more sites-- as would be expected.
Rating: deserves a wee bit more than 4, less than 5.

K-meleon 0.9.12 ought to be called 1.0 -- it's THAT good. Faster than greased lightning. Rock steady. Configurable beyond belief, yet it works just fine straight out-of-the-box for those who detest tweaking.

digitalking reviewed v0.9 on Sep 30, 2005
I give this a five, even though I shouldn't, as it has not been updated in 9 months. It is super fast once you apply the tweaks, and has a nicer interface than Firefox. K-meleon lost the war to Firefox, as this is missing many security updates, that need to be attended to, since January of 2005.
lyleax reviewed v0.9 on Jun 30, 2005
I am a big fan of Firefox, but for browsing quickly and easily, with mouse gestures, smooth scrolling, and tabbed (they call it layered) browsing, K-Meleon is a great choice. It's not meant for non-techies, however, because many of its features are hidden in small configuration dialogs or text files.
fair_is_fair reviewed v0.9 on Mar 7, 2005
Wow! I am impressed. This is a little no name browser that must be the best kept secret on the internet. It is awesome! FAST. Not a lot of features to slow you down but enough to make surfing easy.
I do not understand the popularity of Firebird. It is very slow on my machines. K-meleon and firebird share the same platform but I see no comparison in performance.
Even good old Mozilla suite out performs firebird.
Well done K-meleon.

K-Meleon may have been there long before Firefox came out but it got too quiet for too long so I think they really missed their opportunity. It was barely ever updated.
11-03-2002 The K-Meleon Documentation Project needs volunteers...
11-10-2003: K-Meleon 0.8 released
12-13-2003: K-Meleon 0.8.1 released
12-23-2003: K-Meleon 0.8.2 released
01-15-2005: K-Meleon 0.9 is ready for release
I tried it back then but didn't like it much stability-wise, so I stuck to Mozilla until Firefox saw the light of day. Firefox has more plugins and more features by now.

This is the most stable version yet. Tabbed browsing works better than 0.65, I haven't had it crash yet, it's slim, loads fast, and unlike 0.65 definately a version that was ready for public release. Although I like the lighted "K" throbber better than the default one. Now we just need a couple nice skins, and we're all set. Can't wait til this one is ready for a 1.0 release, it might be 2 years from now, but I'm sure it'll be great.
Kidman reviewed v0.7 on Nov 1, 2002
Well..the Internet Explorer is fast, because the MSHTML DLLs are being in the memory all the time, because thinsg like the Windows Explorer use it. And Opera can't be loaded on the fly, it's an MDI browser, that needs its main windows be there all the time (more memory consuming as the K-Meleon loader). To me the Gecko engine of Mozilla is way faster than any of those other engines out there and K-Meleon is faster than Mozilla, because it's slim.
I am using K-Meleon for over one year and I am very satisfied with it. It still has a few problems (open window through and close it right after it appeard) and some features missing (Auto-Complete URLs), but it the most serious, non-bloated browser out there. Still deserves a 5...
zulugrid reviewed v0.65 Beta Build 674 on Oct 28, 2002
Using the k-meleon loader is kind of lame in my opinion. A browser should be fast because it is designed to be fast, not because it is pre-loaded wasting memory (8.4MB) when you aren't even using it. I tried disabling the toolbar background image but it wouldn't go away (edit: had to restart the browser). Couldn't find an easy to use option to lock the toolbars. The UI reminds me of a combination old IE/Netscape browser. Switching between layers causes the taskbar icon thing to recreate so it keeps switching its position on the taskbar (very annoying in my opinion). Uses more memory than Opera v6 and doesn't appear to be as fast. Overall, my computer is fast enough that I am willing to sacrafice a bit of performance in exchange for a better appearance. I'm sticking with IE.
Mr_Puddles reviewed v0.65 Beta Build 44 on Aug 29, 2002
Works well, but the program is rarely updated for public use. The developers build is updated on a constant basis. I would still use Mozilla though.
Kidman reviewed v0.65 Beta Build 44 on Apr 9, 2002
It's not a disappointment, because this version is NOT for public use. It is an internal beta for testing purpose. It's said to be non-functional in many points (like broken file download). It's mainly a port to the Mozilla 0.9.9 source (after the first version of 0.65 build 44 what was a port to 0.9.8, that was even less functional) with some K-Meleon-specific bugfixes in it. The developers working on completing it. Too bad this beta was leaked to betanews (okok..it was mentioned 2 or 3 times at the forums, but always with the note it's NOT fully functional) and now ppl start to being scaring away from this unstable and buggy piece of s**t (some ppl like argue like this) or start flooding the forums with complains about that poor build. So I say it again: IT'S NO VERSION FOR PUBLIC PURPOSE!!! Stay with 0.6 until the official page has a download of it mentioned on the first page!
MyMaster reviewed v0.65 Beta Build 44 on Apr 9, 2002
what a dissapointment. i had high expectations on the new version of K-meleon, but i must say that if this is what we should expect from the stable version, im moving on. the interface really needs a lot of work, it is way too simplistic. i found nothing new other than it uses the new mozilla build, and the cookie thing is simply unsustainable. i am giving a shot at Networker, or even at Mozilla. by the time it takes developers to put out new versions of K-meleon we should see a really good and stable version in 2010.

The good:
Standards-compliant, no activeX, small and lean, better than IE. It uses google for searches. I like the green dragon icon. Web pages display correctly where Mozilla 0.9.5, the last build I used, did not for certain sites.
The not so good:
It doesn't start up or render images as fast as IE, but it's still fast. It keeps asking to set cookies even though you set it to accept cookies.
Other than that, I prefer this over IE. It's good enough to be the default browser.
Richard30ky reviewed v0.65 Beta Build 44 on Apr 8, 2002
a five stars for its speed and not bloated and reliability
a 1 stars for its ugly IE looks
people may prefer IE over netscape *except me*but have to admit
netscape looks better -only thing to improve is it looks
i would rather they come up with there own style than mimmic IE or others.just a oppinion

the browser and only the browser. this is what i like on kmeleon (and that it is open-source and very fast)
XanTium reviewed v0.5.5 Beta Build 551 on Oct 27, 2001
whoa ! this browser rulez. Fast , small , free , stable , w3c compliant. Looks like some competition for Opera , but this one is open source! So I give it 5.
If you want something like mozilla , but mozilla itself is too big and uses too many resources , then this k-meleon is the thing u are looking for!

Everyone needs to take a look at Kmeleon's latest version. It really rocks. What was missing before is there now. It is small and it is fast.

I like this program a lot and look forward to new releases. Though there are some things that need to be added, we must understand that K-Meleon is still under evolution and it has a lot of potential. So let's encourage its author(s) to continue working on it!
the_dude reviewed v0.4 on May 16, 2001
Go to the author's homepage, and have a good laugh.
You'll see stuff like: "2.5.2001 NEW gdivx 1.8.0 sources uploaded hehe what a poor code !!! 17.04.2001 NEW Version Released !!!!!! This Version Is 10x Faster than previous !!!!!!".

The fact that it looks like IE is nosiating?
Really? It didn't influence my nose at all. Truthfully, the appearance of a thing rarely influences my nose. When I watch Pinocchio or Cyrano de Bergerac, I sometimes imagine that my nose lengthens, but that is the only example that I can recollect where appearance causes any physiological change to my proboscis, and, even then, it is fleeting and imaginary.
I would get my nose checked, if I were you. I can't recommend a good otolaryngologist, but perhaps someone else on this forum can help.
If IE actually causes you nosiation, I imagine that the experience is quite nauseating. See an otolaryngologist soon!

Excellent stuff guys, just keeps getting better and better! :)
Using K-Meleon 0.3 as a front-end to Gecko compares very favorably to Opera 5, in terms of memory usage (only 1/3 more for me) and in terms of overall performance. I didn't clock the rendering speed since I'm on a fast computer on dailup at the moment, but overall I have to say I'm quite impressed.
The only gripes:
1) The scrollbar doesn't get its dimensions from windows (is this a Gecko thing?) and it's much larger in K-Meleon than I have it set in Windows.
2) The position of the last open window isn't saved.
3) It would be nice to customize the avi activity animation since it clashes with my Windows colour scheme. =) I tried opening the exe in a resource editor but it's difficult. Actually the fcat that it's even an avi is needless, why not just a gif or something.
Anyway, nice work. :)

it's a good browser much better than AOLscape. No bloat. Gecko still needs work though, geeknews still doesn't come up correctly. Very fast. Shutting off the background image sped loadin time up.otherwise very good browser.

Nice, but why is it so heavy on memory usage?
Seems stable, quick.
This has a future. Much better interface than Netscape.

All I can say is AWESOME JOB! I for one love the IE interface and you made everything better by using the Netscape engine. Wonderful job man, a well deserved applause. One question though... where to report bugs?
cylix reviewed vv0.1 on Aug 24, 2000
It's pretty impressive for a first release. It's almost everytthing Mozilla/Netscape should be but within 100th of the time. I'm not so sure on the UI though. Pages load faster and during a one hour session it never crashed once. It will not replace IE just yet but it's certainly got the potential. Well Done!

You guys are missing the point. V is not an explorer replacement. It is a text file viewer.. a replacement for the old LIST program that was so popular in the DOS days. It is the best text file viewer available.

Very good for an initial release! Very fast, light, simple GUI. But it there is no support for non-latin characters.. so it is not acceptable for a lot of internet users. Not yet.

This is one to watch! It is very quick and responsive, not at all like netscape 6. I hope this project is continued as it is a nice change of pace, as it out performs Netscape & even IE. It didn't crash on me once -- hard to believe that this was a day's work while AOL and it's $$ still can't get netscape right (fast & stable).

Here are the specific settings I changed in prefs.js to make it work with a proxy:
pref("network.proxy.http", "your.proxy.here");
pref("network.proxy.http_port", proxy.port.here);
pref("network.proxy.type", 1);
The above setting was 0, the proxy only started working when I changed it to 1, sorry I didn't mention that one earlier...

Wonderful!! Thankfully someone saw how terrible Mozilla interface was and wrote a solution for it. I mean, even if you are a IE hater or Mozilla lover, that Mozilla interface is clumsy and stupid. I'll use this one from now on.

Wow. Neato. I think I'll use this instead of IE, just because I love neat things that are in development. What tags, exactly, are we supposed to edit to make the proxy work?
danchee reviewed vv0.1 on Aug 22, 2000
Hmm.. seems to be a good browser. Although Proxy still doesn't work after editing the .js file. Probably my own stupidity. Anyways, does anyone know if it works with current DHTML pages? I remember that Netscape 6 PR2 doesn't render most of the old DHTML codes since it is fully standards compliant. Thanks.

nate reviewed vv0.1 on Aug 22, 2000
I must say, with the speed of the gecko engine and the simplicity of the IE interface, this is one great program. K-Meleon corrects all of the issues I (and others) have with Mozilla - size, interface and usibility. Once mouse wheel support is added and a couple other bugs are fixed, K-Meleon will definitely give IE a run for its money. I strongly suggest you try this piece of software out. Great job Christophe!
