Detection rate isn't as high as I had hoped. But, this, run in combination with Malwarebytes and SAS (and then followed up with CF if necessary) really just made my life easier - my malware computer throughput just increased twofold!

As for running an .exe file while infected, you don't have to do it in Safe Mode, or use RKILL, KILLBOX or any other type extra, just simply rename the .exe file to a .com file and run it like normal!
(i.e. programname.EXE to programname.COM) Windows will run it like it's an executable file (because it is!)

Haven't used the latest version myself, but when I use this, it always does a good job. I clean malware out of other peoples PCs quite frequently, and I've had this actually find rootkits that my typical searches didn't (free AVG, then MalwareBytes and Spybot, and a Kaspersky Online Scan if I brought the PC home).

It should be noted that this does not work on 64-bit OSes.

This is a very good tool to have on your portable USB drive and yes it does have it's limitations of viruses but thats what it is designed for.the most common that have slipped by a novice/or you.
This program does a very heavy scan of all files and folders which is great.
Correct this program is not a replacement for having a good AV/Firewall program of whom ever as all AV/Firewall programs have their limitations which is another reason to have this program in your tool kit.
As for wrecking a system I would guess that a lawyer got involved some where...take the disclaimer with a gulp as you do with any AV program when it asks you to make a choice...delete, not delete, or.
Just remember thats what back-up programs, virtual disks and sand boxes are for so that you never have to run this program or make a choice.

Doesn't anyone else find it disconcerting that there is a disclaimer from McAfee that warns you of possible damage to your system by a tool that they put out to help fix a particular problem with your system?

This has outlived its usefulness with its limitation of only being able to target specific types of infections that have long been identified by the programs that run resident on systems for the detection, prevention, and/or removal of those infections.

Long winded and technical? Yeah I suppose. let me put it this way. install a current anti virus application and keep the definitions up to date and you should have no problem. one word of advice to go with it? Avoid McAfee. Get something like NOD32, Kaspersky, or even Symantec AV Corporate v 10.2

Stinger has lost its utility these days. It's rare to find a PC these days that's infected with Mytob, Nimda, etc, while the most popular (virulent) ones these days, like VirtuMonde and Autoruns/Virut series which can be a pain to remove, aren't detected.

It makes no sense to use Stinger, especially considering the fact that it can only remove a limited amount of malware; meaning which you'd need to know beforehand what malware is present in the system.

Finally, you'd be better off using McAfee's own SuperDAT-based standalone scanner, or if you want a GUI program, you can get Kaspersky's full-fledged removal tool.

That is illogical. If a rootkit launches from within an OS in order to run outside of the OS, then rootkit revealers would potentially have the same ability to go outside the OS to fight rootkits.

Rootkits in theory have the capability to be fairly undetectable..

If they are in the OS they can run outside the OS when OS is loaded. If they are outside the OS scanners within the OS can't detect them reliably.

More than these tools, the best bet is to never run a machine with elevated privs while browsing online or with general public having local access to your machine...

Very true. Stinger is a CLEANER, not just a detector/remover. Most antivirii, including NOD and KAV are only good at detecting/preventing virii, and not cleaning them. Very few A/V actually manage to disinfect files.

On the flip side though, the McAfee command-line version (included in SuperDat updates) does a very good job of cleaning AND removing- it also does Adware/Spyware etc, and has the second biggest Malware database (first being Kaspersky)- plus its free. So I'd rather use the command like Scan.exe/Scanpm.exe rather than stinger.

Either ways, 2 thumbs up for McAfee. Too bad though their A/V is no longer in the top.

This is a specialized tool that should not and cannot be compared to full-blown anti-virus programs. It is much like the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. It is only meant to remove a handful of common viruses.

It is very effective for what it does, and a very useful tool to get hosed computers operable enough to run a real anti-virus program. That is all you can expect from it.

I don't know why people compare this to online scanners, or any AV at all. It is only suppose to clean what it is listed to clean. This is a cleaning tool. Regular antiviruses only detect. They do not clean. Clean means it gets rid of all the changes, including registry entries.

It does what it claims to do and quite cleanly. My only complaint is that it creates a stinger.opt in it's current location when executed so it won't run from read only media such as a write protected floppy disk. Thus, the .exe can be infected if some virus writer wants to put a little effort in. The .opt file should be created in Temp or in the root of C:\.

To everyone complainnig that this doesn't detect every malware ever made -- you've totally missed the point of this tool.

It's not an AntiVirus program.

It's a tool to combine detections and fixes for the most common virii and trojans so that techs, admins, etc, can all have a way to snuff out these most-common problems at all times. It's takign all those individual fix .exe's, and rolling them into one handy little program. So instead of having to compile your own Tech CD witht hem all on it, you can just put one simple little program on it that can handle them all. Stinger's been incredibly-useful to me countless times, and si a staple tool.

Anyone wanting it to do anything else, or using it for anything else, is apparently too dumb to even be commenting on it.

It can be useful, but 90% of the time it's not. Now, if it could somehow integrate detection for every TROJ_AGENT and I-WORM_SDBOT (aka AGOBOT aka RBOT) variant without making the program 12 times larger (which is impossible as there are over 200 variants of SDBOT alone), that would be great. The problem is 95% of the time someone gets the sasser virus today is from another virus (a trojan downloader) downloading it. Stinger does not eliminate these trojan downloaders, so sure you kill sasser but 2 minutes later it is redownloaded by SDBOT. I never use stinger for this reason.

This tool is really usefull if you have a virus. It has rescuded clients of mine often! Remember that it is not a virus detector but a quick fix cleaner, it is cure rather than prevention. If you want free prevention try Avast, if you want to get rid of a common virus use this as it rocks!

While I have used this to quickly remove known infections, I've seen it fail on detection of many common variants of modern viruses. Bringing us to the reason for a 4: what is the point if it doesn't remove all viruses from a system?

This answers the "DOS Based" question. Yes, it is useful on an NTFS based system. All that is needed is something that will allow a boot to a "DOS" environment, but also gives access to the NTFS partitions. There are several tools out there. The best I've found is Bart's PE (preinstallation environment) which boots you to a WinXP based environment capable of not only reading, but also writing to the NTFS partitions. With the correct plugins you can do WAY more like ghosting, repairs, copies, virus scans etc. It is an invaluable tool for the sysadmin. As for Stinger, it is also a plugin for Bart's, and Stinger rocks for what it does.

McAfee Avert Stinger util does a good in scanning for
worms, trojans and viruses. The over all size is under
a 1 meg. This version is windows based. I would like to
see a dos based util like this. So, I can put on a floppy
and scan a system without depending on the Windows OS to

This program is da bomb!! It's so much more efficient than Symantec's Fix___ programs. Do I seriously want to run FixKlex, FixNimda, FixWelchia.. Heck no!!! For the person who wanted a log file.. Yes, there is no file called blahblahscan.log. Just read the screen.. It tells you what virus and what file was deleted. True there's no interaction, but this release kills 64 confirmed viruses. It's not the full blown version that scans for thousands of viruses.

Finally a Mcafee product I can live with. Its free (like the good old days), doesnt put any files/registry info into my PC and actually found something it thought was a virus, maybe it was, maybe it wasnt..Lack of a log file, lack of "user choice" upon detection is a big disappointment however. Sadly Mcafee's standard line of products have NEVER worked without screwing up my pc and my family's pcs, so I will stick with Norton, but I do applaude their attempt to give something back to the community without asking for money in return, keep THAT up Mcafee and you might win back some customers in the future.
