"Once a virus is detected".. my problem with virus detectors is that they are reactive, not proactive, in the sense that the software will only recognise viruses that we have told it about (ie downloaded updates), therefore no major package in use at the time the "I Love You" virus hit would have detected it and there were "too many users" messages on the update servers on the following monday morning as panic spread throughout the IT community. A more proactive approach would be to increase your security setting (Tools/Security/) to disable scripting/java/file downloads etc etc, this would have stopped the "I Love You" virus and actually did at our group. I know it decreases functionality a bit but it's a lot better than the alternative and a damn sight cheaper.
