Publisher's Description

MenuetOS is an Operating System in development for the PC written entirely in 32/64 bit assembly language. Menuet64 is released under License and Menuet32 under GPL. Menuet supports 32/64 bit x86 assembly programming for smaller, faster and less resource hungry applications.

Menuet isn't based on other operating system nor has it roots within UNIX or the POSIX standards. The design goal, since the first release in year 2000, has been to remove the extra layers between different parts of an OS, which normally complicate programming and create bugs.

Menuet's application structure isn't specifically reserved for asm programming since the header can be produced with practically any other language. However, the overall application programming design is intended for 32/64 bit asm programming. Menuet programming is fast and easy to learn. Menuet's responsive GUI is easy to handle with assembly language. And Menuet64 is capable of running Menuet32 applications.

It's been a while since I've used MenuetOS, very nice but the OS is going the way of the dinosaur really fast since who still has a floppy drive, they don't come with most new computers now-a-days, and it's hardly worth spending the money for one just for MenuetOS.
So a bit of a rethink is needed.

The MAZZTer, are you rating Virtual PC, and QEMU, or Menuet?

This is quite simply a fantastic example of what can be accomplished with highly-optimized and efficient assembly coding.

I've been following the progress of this OS for a while, and it still amazes me what it is able to do for such a small size.

The 64-bit version is available on the author's site, as well as a CD that can be ordered which contains additional 64-bit applications.

Fantastic OS; I actually had a dream for building a very functional floppy-disk-sized operating system, but it appears that someone beat me to it!

Really cool; of all other OS's of it's size, this takes the cake.

CarlK, I used RawWrite to put the image on a floppy, it's the best app I know of for this purpose.

1.Too BIG for a floppy. 2.How to use an .IMG file? 3.Can't rate yet, but our IT guy told me about it!

allsiante & oubeaver found file size problem.
My PowerDesk Filmanager says the M32-084.IMG is 1,474,560 B. And an empty floppy is 1,457,664 B.
So close.

I have never used an image file. They are sector- by - sector copies using the disk controller/BIOS?

Anyone used Winimage or alcohol 120 to read or write an .IMG?

It needs USB drivers support so that it could be booted off of a flash memory on motherboards having the boot option.

Doesn't work under Virtual PC. Virtual PC is forced to reset the VM while it is booting.

It works on QEMU for a few seconds, until it slows to a halt.

Very interesting little OS that fits on a floppy. It'd be better if it didn't require a floppy.

Had no luck with connectivity on an Intel Pro/1000 NIC.

Running under VMware, it appears to freeze up when you first boot it. All you have to do is push Escape when the screen is garbled and then it continues to load. After that it seems to run alright. Unfortunately the whole OS isn't very useful without a decent web browser. The included browser won't even display graphics.

Is the best mini-SO ASMbased, when it have hm installation and suport for internet will be a great SO for people that have jurassic machines like me...

The best FDD-based Asm.O.S. I have seen. Possibly would attract more people if it could be installed to a partition on HDD, and more apps written for it. Otherwise, a potential development platform.

You mean my 1.2 megs full featured router image is bloated ? You mean my 1.4 megs client image is bloated ? You mean a clean debian or gentoo install done by someone who knows whathe does is bloated ? What da heck, I don't even care what do you mean, I'll just give Menuet a 5 cause it does what I like playing with it.

and also the new version features need to be added more so can attract more people.

I found out how it works!!!!
You dont put the actual file in the floppy, open the file with the comand prompt, and it will write the data to the floppy. The only problem I had was that the commamnd prompt from WinXP didnt write to the floppy. I did it on my Win98 machine.

Looks pretty neat but the setup file is too big for a floppy disk. Maybe I have cheap disks or something but the amount of free space on my disk is 1,457,664 the file is 1,495,040. So close. Am I the only one?

Cool little OS. I'm not super-impressed with Menuet as much as I'm now super-unimpressed with MS and Linux. They should be ashamed of their bloated products.

ASM is a machine level assembly language:
http://www.azillionmonkeys.com/qed/asm.html

As a proof of concept this thing is amazingt and has great potential, given that 256MB - 512MB onboard flash memory is starting to become affordable, you could have a all in one motherboard that just turns on, with all GUI functions, all by itself. $100 for the computer and $75 for the monitor. Oh, yeah.

I give a 5 because I like seeing new OS capable with GUI and fast/reliable/small in size.

Too bad it doesn't work on both of my desktop and laptop somehow, which I don't really know why but I'll try again once I got help from their forum.

Based on the introductions and the screen shots, it's cool. I "under-estimated" the power of things that can be holded in a floppy. I can't really believe a floppy can hold that much of stuffs. COOL! You should try it (and it better works so to impress you.)

btw, what is ASM language?

Interesting OS. Personally, as I no longer have a floppy drive, I burned the floppy image using Nero bootable CD mode. Works nicely, as A: becomes a writable RAM disk, and you just treat it like a fast floppy.

This is a really cool OS. Very basic, yes...but coming along great. Just wish it would work on my laptop (and not just my work computer) - Vesa 3.0 i think...Sis350 graphics chip on a PIII mobo.
But then again *nix also has issues with my laptop...
Anyways nothing I can hold against it, though I would realyl like it if they added some more support (wish I could tell them my exact problem).

Excellent applicaiton. Used this since the last release on Betanews and all I an say is superb! Highly recommended!

As an aside: Apg88, you said "I cant seem to fit it on a floppy, all the floppies I have seem to be 1.38 mb"

Well what do you think 1.44mb disks are?? the formated capacity is 1.44 Mb, but becasue of the way disk sizes are calcuated for quoting they show as 1.38 Mb - it will still hold 1.44 Mb!

It sounds wonderful and I would like to give it a try. But like the previous comment why not to the CD path?? Some of us left the world of flopies long ago. I don't have a disk to put it on, nor the drive to run it.

Maverick_16

Maverick_16 reviewed v0.75 Pre-3.9 on Sep 10, 2003

This is my second attempt with this EXCELLENT os. Impressive despite the little things one can really do (apps). Appreciate that it's GPL. Now... why is the 1.44mb floppy path? can't see the point as it's really sure nowadays the mojority of pcs (even very old boxes) come with a cd-rom drive that boots! Still, the idea, the prog work, the professional attitude of the dev... all deserve 5 stars.

Works well especially as a small server. It is naturally limited because it has to fit a floppy but otherwise has interesting features. Compatibility wise it worked on P3 machine I tried and had no problems.

I give it a three because: it installed, started great (and looks cool, besides the fact the entire OS fits on one floppy disk!) BUT... I cannot get the mouse to work... I tried every option on the startup menu. And it seems the keyboards not working either.
