I've used MSN/Live since day one & haven't tried Messenger Plus! for some years: I wasn't impressed then & I'm not now, it attempts to access the net multiple times & will take you to junk sites to add the plugins etc. After uninstalling it messed up my Live installation & required a full image restore.

You can opt out of the initial toolbar installation but that's only the beginning, it then resets this & attempts to install garbage. It seems to offer a lot but unless you allow it to install crap from who knows where you get nothing.

It doesn't even add anything remotely useful & it's main aim seems to get you involved in the 'Plus! Community' which seems to consist of tacky garbage winks, emoticons, skins etc.from dubious sources. If you don't have a rule based Firewall you will have no idea what this program is up to & you are leaving your system wide open - Be warned.

No stars & that's overrating this piece of closet spyware ~

I thoroughly enjoy Messenger plus. There are enough time saving apps to allow you to spend even more time on time-wasting games ;-). All jokes apart, I can't remember ever having trouble with it. It's fun and user friendly. and it helps keeps an ADHD employee, such as my self, focused at work. Also, it doesn't clog up the CPU. You wont hear any complaints me.

Messenger Plus! is no longer called Messenger Plus! Live. The latest version, 5.10 is compatible with both Windows Live Messenger 2009 and 2011. Besides the traditional features that is famous for (multiple accounts, Lock Messenger, skins and scripts (now called plugins), sounds, emoticons, it has a brand new "Skin Designer", where you can create skins all by yourself, in just a few clicks. A lot of the popular skins have also been updated for 2011, and are available for download on the home page. The software is still free and safe to use, if downloaded from the official site.

The fact of the matter this author initially used deceptive dialogs (that have been clarified in more recent versions) to install the adware AND pushed adware to users during an online upgrade without a consent or asking their permission, along with hiding himself using domains by proxy as a domain name shield service should speak for his lack of integrety...
Not worth the risk vector

if ur 13y/o and love chatting on msn (wlm) then you NEED this!

if your a noob and end up with adware after installing this.. you should of picked the misleading sounding option that reads: "I refuse to support", sounds mean, but thats the choice that does NOT add adware :-)

a good program with huge amount of features, however there in lies the problem,

setting up this program is a time consuming part, with so many opetions, it's hard not to be nismayed when first runnint the program,

for people who doesn't have IT experience will sure be overwhelmed with all the options that need to be addressed when first running the program,

i feel the time has come for some kind of option for basic users, or perhaps a idiot proof wizard that guides the user in setting up the program,

but for what it is, 5 stars, but giving the amount of options, it's to in depth,

Simply a must have if you have to use MSN. Messenger Plus! adds so many useful features. This paired with A-Patch makes MSN actually bearable.

I'm amazed at how many people are confused about the advertising, as the author is totally up front about it and has given you a choice to install it or not.

Adware must go, and this rating will instantly jump to a 5. We are willing to pay/donate.

EDIT: I don't think many people are confused about the adware option, it's just that its a crappy way of showing support for the software (by compromising system performance and possibly security).

dwby

dwby reviewed v4.60.324 on Mar 20, 2008

I suppose somebody has to bring in the facts.

Fact 1.
There is no spyware. Just adware. This adware is a very trimmed down version after many, many tests with BETA testers.

Fact 2.
The installation does not trick you in anyway. When you reach the screen to choose if you want to install it, it tells you the sponsor is adware and the option to install it isn't even ticked.

Fact 3.
It does not download spyware/adware without you consenting. If you choose to install the sponsor it will display ads. Many tests were done to try and make sure no *adult* ads or nasties were loaded.

Fact 4.
There is no scamming here. You choose to install it or you choose not to install it. Once installed it can easily be uninstalled but removing it from the add/remove programs.

Fact 5.
Patchou (the author) said not enough people donated to keep this project alive. Using a trimmed down and looked after adware (the sponsor) was the best way for him to keep working full time on the project. If you don't like it, choose not to install the sponsor or don't even download it.

With that being said, this program is the reason I keep using Windows Live Messenger. It's one of the first programs I install straight after Windows Live Messenger!

Still tries to guilt trip users into installing ad-ware.. Hides his address behind Domains By Proxy, and cut out the main "feature" of it.. which was blocking ads in IM's... I really think the author should reconsider his method of doing buisness and make it true shareware if he needs "support"... Untill then.. this crap keeps getting installed by gullable users.. and i have to block its install... Make it nagware or true shareware where the quality of the app deems its value instead of guilting people into installing dangerous spyware.

I'll admit, I'm down to two uses for this now:

Tabbed conversations.
Command line style message capability (example: messaging all open contacts, and setting status from a conversation window).

But to my knowledge there isn't any other that offer it, so to me it has to still be a 5.

*Update* It seems to have an odd bug for me whereby if I minimise my Messenger chat (2 open at the moment) then maximise any other window and minimise the window again, the messenger conversation unminimises itself.

*Update 2* It only happens when there is one window left to minimise before you get to the desktop.

roj

roj reviewed v4.50.310 on Dec 10, 2007

Does this block ads any more? No. Therefore it's outlived its usefulness. I'm sorry to say that when he made that decision, he lost me as a user. The rest of the features don't really justify the download. As a matter of fact, that is what finally pushed me into finding an alternative to the Microsoft crap for IM and I am now a very happy Pidgin user.

I'll give it THREE stars for what once was.

I gave it a 1 because of the potential harm it can do to your computer. Look up C2.Lop on google and see if you would want even the CHANCE it might be installed. In addition, the new "Contest" icon that the author of this program has included in the two most recent incarnations is a back door Trojan that was installed on my computer AFTER I selected "I do not wish to support" during installation. As far as I'm concerned Cyril Paciullo (I have no idea who Cher McNamara is unless it is another one of Paciullo's aliases, but they are not the publisher of this malware) is a scam artist making money off of gullible young Live Messenger Users.

I had a previous version of this, which I chose *NOT* to install the ad-ware, and while using the programs built-in autoupdate, it downloaded the ad-ware application and DID NOT present a EULA or ask permission .... Im sorry. thats not me being "stupid" thats a very badly behaving application. Plus Patchouli is still hiding his DNS registrations behind Domains By Proxy...

I wish so many users were not taken by the lies and deceit in this application. You should have heard the flames I got for mentioning how its a bad idea to install this app while using a BETA application on the MS forums.. Even my AV software (Trend Micro) reports his WEBSITES as dangerous! :)

And I recently tried installing it again, and guess what.. I ran into the same issue that with the "Contest" icon installing spyware as refusing it during install wasnt enough.

Frankly i would love to see this as a true shareware app without any spyware of any flavor but I guess instead of profiting honestly, this author has chose to profit regardless of the quality of his application.

In any event, its a nice add-on for MSN Messenger, with an incredible array of options and new features. It can be a bit overwhelming at times with the layout, and the large number of settings, but it's well worth it for those who use MSN Messenger a lot. Read the installation carefully, to ensure you don't install the third party sponsor program if you have no desire to use it (and who does).

The latest release, likely soon to be updated here - 4.10 at present - includes a few new items of crap-ware, should the casual user not opt-out of the guilt-trippy sponsor program: "I Refuse to Give My Support," indeed. These include but are not limited to an eBay phishing page re-director, false security alerts that point to bogus security "tools" which are simply more malware, attempts to edit HOSTS files, makes changes to IE pop-up blocker exclusions, etc. Further, Plus!'s EULA doesn't mention age restrictions, but it's sponsor crap shows multiple age-inappropriate ads that lead to gambling & porn sites.

The author has had his MS MVP status revoked by MS over his alignment with these types of threat. vectors. I have to question the quality and security of any software knowingly bundled and distributed with these kinds of "sponsor programs," opt-out or not. It's revolting.

Changelog:
3.63.148 - 04/04/2006
Messenger Plus! Live 4.00 will soon be released. Some last compatibility fixes have been made into Messenger Plus! 3 to make sure the upgrade goes smoothly for everybody. Note that both software will be capable of running together but won't be entirely compatible, that's why Messenger Plus! Live automatically disables Messenger Plus! 3 upon install. You can then, if you wish, reinstall Messenger Plus! 3.63 (and nothing below it) if you still want to use Messenger Plus! in Windows Messenger 4 or 5.
A new major version of sponsor will be distributed with Messenger Plus! Live and I thought it would be appropriate to include it along with this update. The new sponsor package is distributed by Circle Development Ltd and I'm sure everybody will be happy to know that they've removed what users didn't like the most: the home page change and the search bar. Also, in case you would wonder, nothing has been added either compared to previous versions.
The sponsor agreement in the setup has been enlarged so that everybody can read the part about advertisement without scrolling. The screenshot of the search bar has been removed as it's not installed anymore (and it wasn't really needed anymore anyway as there's no way you can mistake the sponsor's agreement for anything else now).
When the sponsor is installed, Messenger Plus! is listed as "Messenger Plus! 3 & Sponsor" in Add/Remove Programs so that people can locate it easily if they don't remember installing the ads with Messenger Plus! after some time.
Developer's note: due to the way version 3.62 was compiled, a network path was embedded in the binaries (pointing to the pdb file). This was causing extra delays to developers trying to debug something on their computer with Messenger Plus! installed as their debugger was trying to locate my computer name on their network. This is now fixed.
----------------------------

all about the sponsor...dont think there's any reason to install this (??)

Always have been a huge fan of this software! It absolutely rocks, and the new tabbed windows are great.

I must admit I prefer the 3.52 installer's method of explaining the adware's license and policy... the time delayed effect was a little more effective, as I almost missed it too this time. Even so, not a bad enough complaint to warrant docking my score of the product.

Patchou makes a great effort at providing a great piece of software for free... and he deserves our support... even though I prefer a cash donation rather than annoying ads, lol.

I don't really find this software useful anymore. I liked when it had the banner removal. I realize why that feature was removed recently. I think winks/nudges surpass the built-in sound commands these days. Logging is built-in as well...
I think the thing that really irks me is the auto-update feature not requiring admin rights. I was pretty irritated when a bunch of users here got and auto-update and were able to install it (and the spyware) by themselves (in two cases, even though I specifically told them in an e-mail to refuse the sponsor). Oh well. Time to move on I guess...

SPYWARE SPYWARE SPYWARE
So they give you the option to not install the "sponsors" software. That is easily overlooked, or even worse, left selected because you assume the sponsors software must be useful.

In fact, you end up with pop-ups, an internet explorer banner, and a changed home page. All of which are advertising betting sites, cheap cigerettes, and porn sites. And guess what, any attempt to remove these don't work because they reinstall themselves. You have to resort to hacking the registry or spyware removal tools.

How many people, especially children have been caught out by this.

Offers other new functionality and usability improvements as well.

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED WITH SPYWARE/ADWARE, BE VERY CAREFUL TO CHOOSE "I REFUSE....." DURING THE INSTALL... this will still let the Plus! add-in install and work without the adware.

Personally, I chose to send Patchou $20 through PayPal instead of using the sponsor... this program is well worth it, and so is Patchou.

Downloading update 'cause the add-on does bog down my dual display when I have a few chats windows open... Must say that the one of the 2 video cards is a RAGE XL PCI with probably not more than 8 meg on board, it's compensated by the 64 meg Intel(R) 82845G onboard controler.

Still the best MSN Messenger add-on by far.

For you idiots that feel the need to blame everyone else for not looking at what you were doing during the install and complain about the Sponsor program - GET OVER YOURSELF! *You* made a mistake, deal with it.

Like most others, I hate spyware, adware, etc. but the dev has to make a living and the software is free so the only income he gets is via the sponsor program. Unlike most other software providers that include *ware, Patchou has gone a LONG way to making the inclusion of the sponsor program as obvious and ethical as possible (go read his post on 10/10 here - http://www.msgplus.net/news.php).

If you accidently installed the sponsor program because you weren't paying attention during the install, that is NOT a fault of the program and it should not be castigated because of your mistake.

Rate the software for what the software does, not your failure to follow directions.

I have mixed feelings about this one...

Let's start with the rave:

Really nice new features, love the tranparency, added a nifty plug-in which gives macros... Personnalised status is also nice...

Now on the rants...

I know you can opt-out of the adware which is what I did at work, I did go and click the sponsors once at the website to encourage dev.

Then I went home and forgot to...

OUCH!

Took me more than 2 hours to get rid of it ( didn't want to use the un-install- re-install technique to test a few apps)

Spy Sweaper, Ad-Aware (not 1.5) Spy Bot S&D failed to see myweb...

Highjackthis did see the HKCU entry and IE startpage highjack but could not get rid of it was being re-entered at each start-up.

I suspected a service hack...

Turns out I had to deactivate (can't remember exact name) MS multimedia content ( copyright checking) new service to get rid of the highjacking.

Giving a 2 because of that should have deserved a 4 maybe even a 5.

Get rid of the spyware, it's giving us more trouble than benefit, a nuisance. Personnaly I think it invades my private life un-asked and I consider it a teft.

Associating yourself with it makes me less likely to encourage your product.

PayPall, shareware, advertising on the free app ( dead screens nothing interactive please) anything is better than Spyware & Highjacks.

As great as this program is, it could still do with improvements (a few quick examples are; toast notification on any contact status change, simpler way to add icons to quick panels (drag and drop would be so much easier), more intelligent counting of POP3 email (at the moment you have to delete all your messages from the server before the counter will reset).

As for the sponsor (directed to users like parz)... I have to give this a "1" because by adding the "Sponsors" software the developer, Patchou, is effectively condoning spyware. Nobody would install the included spyware if they were aware of how insidious it is. It changes your homepage, changes your web error pages, turns off any toolbar addins and replaces with its own, and two different spyware programs attempt to access the internet at regular intervals. Every time you start up IE, the spyware changes your homepage, error pages and toolbar back to it's own if you had the audacity to change them back to your normal settings.

Patchou claims that uninstalling his software removes all the spyware but that is NOT true. You have to remove the windows startup registry setting for the spyware and manually remove the three Program Files folders. Running spybot and adaware afterwards is also a good idea.

Nobody would knowingly install this spyware so I can only conclude that Patchou expects to make money from the unwary who install the "sponsors" software not knowing what it is and then can't remove it afterwards.

This program is not a virus, nor is it spyware on its own. Messenger Plus! has an OPTIONAL ad-support program that Ad-Aware and others classify as spyware... fair enough... don't install it. In fact, the setup forces you to choose whether you want it or not BEFORE you can install it, and it even identifies EXACTLY what it is during that prompt.

The rest of the program is great... I love being able to do multi-format messages, auto-away messages, contact renaming, custom contact login sounds, and various other features like Boss Protect, etc.

If you're going to review an application, get your facts straight and state the truth, not some messed up one-sided bias.

No way would I trust any free AV - it's half-assed at best and out of date and erroneous and out of date at worst. This is an excellent program that adds useful functionality. When it comes to spy/adware, the vast majority of people somehow have to belong to two categories: Those who know nuts about them, and those who are sickeningly paranoid about them. As one can easily see, many of the latter have just proclaimed their own inclinations to the rest of us. I strongly suggest that these few get their fingers off any computer keyboard until they learn how to use a computer properly. Imagine, so many people getting defeated by one of the simplest, non-bloated installers I have seen.

Someone said that's what you get for not reading before you click and I have to say, technically you are correct, BUT he has made this thing look exactly like a disclamer option and 99 out of a 100 people are going to click to accept because of this reason. therefore what I would have given a 5 I am giving a 2... using tactics like this to generate revenue on a free program is no better than the idiots who install adware without your knowledge...

Awesome program, hamstrung by greed. The sponsor program is one of the sneakiest most underhanded things i've ever seen. It deactivates google toolbar so popups can get through, it changes it's install name in the registry/toolbar for every install, so people can't follow set instructions to remove the spyware because the names of files are different. You have to go to a webpage to download a couple of different uninstallers to get it all off, and even after that i had to use ad-aware to clean it up completely. This is especially a problem if you want to use the program on non-tech savvy peoples computers who will just click "yes" to the spyware and then never be able to get rid of it, BY DESIGN! I'm all for an ad-sponsor program if need be, but this supremely deceptive ad-sponsor patchou chose is beyond contempt.

i just thought i'd share my thoughts on the whole SPONSOR part of the install. first, of all the software i'm installing on my system to try out on a daily basis, i've been programmed to click ANY bullet as SOON AS I SEE the words "I ACCEPT". in fact, i just installed this update right now, and i had clicked the "I ACCEPT" bullet even knowing that i wasn't suppose to. you see, my brain sees the two bullets, reads the "I ACCEPT/I REFUSE" part, and i click. i don't ever see the part that follows "I ACCEPT", "please install sponsor program". now, i'm not mad at patchu for putting this in his install... i really don't care. now that i am aware that i have to click "I REFUSE", it's not a problem. i do realise however, that this setup is going to cause people a lot of anger... but the most of them will get over it.

Guys, all you have to do is select not to install the spyware! Go into custom install and deselect it. And they are up front about it, it's called a license agreement, the user is responsible for reading that.

My question is, why has there been a release almost every day for the past week? Geez, just release one and fix all the bugs you get and release a newer one a week later or so, so that people don't have to keep downloading and so that you can really concentrate on what's going on with less builds.

Overall, great software.
