Publisher's Description

Microsoft ActiveSync is the latest sync software release for Windows Mobile-based devices. It provides a great synchronization experience with Windows®-based PCs and Microsoft Outlook right out of the box. ActiveSync acts as the gateway between your Windows-based PC and Windows Mobile-based device, enabling the transfer of Outlook information, Office documents, pictures, music, videos and applications to and from your device. In addition to synchronizing with a desktop PC, it can synchronize directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 so that you can keep your e-mail, calendar data, tasks and contact information updated wirelessly when youâ??re away from your PC.

I, too have experienced the same "breakage" when simply trying to install ASync to "fix" the time-change issue. Little did I know that the installation of 4.5 would BREAK EVERYTHING! I can't sync my P/PC now and in my line of work this is very necessary. Thanks a lot Microsloth!

Works fine for me with zero problems. Does everything that I would expect it to do and does it very well.

Great application

Micrsoft's philosophy

If we break it you will pay.. (pay for upgrade, fix, support etc.)

By reading the README.DOC (microsoft.com), there are several drawbacks when installing ActiveSync 4.5 that prefer to keep with 4.2.

The last USABLE version was ActiveSync 3.8.

What the HELL are you doing to our software, MS?

Gotta agree here, not only does it crash BUT still no not possible to have two different items synched.
1 PDA
1 Smartphone "WM5"
Not only rthat but if there is unresolved items, clicking resolve, ALWAYS gave you a choice via pop up as what you want to do..replace pc info or Device info.
This is no longer the case.
Removed and back to 4.2

Sorry "atab0y" I don't see any WLAN sync capabilities on this version. Just a few minor changes. Am I missing something? The ability to do a wireless sync to my PC again would be great.

utomo

utomo reviewed v4.5 Beta 2 on Sep 19, 2006

The improvements did not deserve .3 versions.
It just a minor update. so better to call it 4.21 or something like that.

Microsoft need to add many thing to improve it.

the something new is that it seems to be able to synch wirelessly again. i think the last version that did this was v3.8. since we have to rate, giving it a 5 due to the re-ad of wireless synching. otherwise don't know, haven't used the product. haven't used my ipaq since went blackberry and ibm x41 tablet...

It works like it says it does

utomo you should try the application before writing a review of it. Do you even own a windows mobile device?

works fine on WM2003 devices, works fine with Office 2003 (I also tested it with 2007 seems to work ok)

fmarkos

fmarkos reviewed v4.2 on Aug 4, 2006

I tried version 4.2 but I could no longer set the sync path (briefcase path) of my choice in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\\Services\Synchronization In this version it seems your sync path is forced to reside in the "%HOMEPATH%\My Documents" folder. I don't like that. I want to set my own!
Going back to version 3.8 :-(

Firstly, let me clear the confusion about compatibility. ActiveSync 4.x is compatible with WM2005 and WM2003. I have a WM2005 device and a WM2003 Smartphone and I sync both with my computer without any problems. ActiveSync automatically disables some functions when syncing with my smartphone. I also sync with USB and Bluetooth interchangeably without any problems, unlike Activesync 3.8

I would like to see some additional control over settings but overall am quite satisfied with it.

I used 4.0 with an iPAQ h3670 running PC 2002. Works okay enough. Just wish they would put back in the capability to sync via wireless.

BetaChap

Although it is stated that Activesync 4 only works with Windows Mobile 5 devices, I have been using Activesync 4.0 without a problem on my ipaq h5450 running Windows Mobile 2003. I am finding Activesync 4.2 to be just as good.
I can't synchronise folders in folders, in my favourites! This functionality seems to of been removed after 3.8.
Overall I find Activesync 4.2 (& 4.0) is more stable to use than 3.8, but I am still aware that 4.0+ are for Windows Mobile 5 devices.
Good stuff!

utomo reviewed v4.2 Beta Preview on Apr 27, 2006

Things that Microsoft need to improve:
1. Make the ActiveSync remember if we mostly use the type of synchronizations. so later that one is choose by default.
2. Need to be compatible with WM 2003
3. Need more Icons such as disconnected, etc. to make it easier to use.
4. Need to be able to create folders inside folders in the mobile device, from computer.
and many more
5. Need many more functions especially for PDA phones, so it can be used for many purpose such as SMS, picture gallery, etc.

and look at descriptions: why still Microsoft Office XP instead of 2003 ???

Works perfectly on my Tmobile SDA (HTC Tornado Music). Fast and reliable, about the same as 4.1.

P.S - 4.1 DOES work with WM 2003 SE 2.

The reviewers here seem to not realize that ActiveSync 4 ONLY works with Windows Mobile 5 devices. Windows Mobile 2003 devices are compatible with 3.8 only.

I will test ActiveSync 4.2 Beta and post a short review on my experience very soon.

I've tried it with WM 5 on Qtek 8310 and on Dell Axim x50v running WM5. It sucks bigtime, since it fails to sync all contacts, and it wont copy pictures from the device back to the pc.

Works well with Windows XP Professional x64; however, no capability to create a shortcut to the Mobile Device - you must use the "Explore" feature to open an Explorer window into the device.

WTF @ removing networking support!?

Microsoft: What were guys thinking!?

Also, it's getting a little bloating:

This program uses three processes:
rapimgr.exe (?)
wcescomm.exe
WCESMgr.exe

Regardless, it's the only program I know of.

I can't believe they've removed network syncing. I have a number of clients who use this feature, and until this is sorted out, upgrading is totally out of the question.

sorahl reviewed v4.0 on May 11, 2005

To release a version of software that goes in reverse as far as features is terrible.
You will not be able to connect and do a sync over your network.... Don't install this until they fix it.

3.8 is the way to go right now.

I will write comments for version 3.8 later.

Below are my comments for version 3.71
Does version 3.8 solve this problems (which exist on 3.71) ?
( I will try soon)
- cannot copy multiple cascading folders.
- Problems on some word, excel files synch
- Some HTML not working correctly
- Activesynch need to be able to create folder in the PDA from PC, not must create on the PDA
- Cannot open files on the PDA from PC.
- and other problems

Thanks

If Not solve this problems yet, MS need to work on version 3.81 soon. or release the 4.0 beta.

It came from Microsoft, right here:

First of all, you sound kinda paranoid. Also, don't give sofwtare a bad rating if you're suspicious of where it came from. In my experience, BetaNews is a reliable source for new and beta software, even if it hasn't been updated across the original developers site yet.

As for my review, the sync is faster than ever with my Outlook and Axim X5. No complaints from my end. Still the easiest for syncing a Pocket PC.

Hey! For those of us with Pocket PCs, upgrading to newer versions of ActiveSync is essential.
I don't know yet if this version fixes my HP Jornado's occasionl issue with the msgsvr32 lockup, but so far there are no problems.
