Why? Because the software is EOL. No more updates, just EOL support.

This program has a looonnnggg way to go to topple Photoshop or even Paint.net. Bulky download, Net 3.0 paind in the butt etc. Doesnt cater for all your creative needs despite the ms blurb implying it does. You can obtain the same level of creativity using GIMP and other tool without spending a penny.

Umm. This is not freeware. According to the Micvrosoft to which the link redirected me it is a 60 day trial version.
Pretty good program though. Easy to use and as is sometimes the case with Microsoft products of this type it is quite easy to find how to do thing. Discoverable as the Microsofties like to put it.

The fact that this needs to have .NET 3.0 on WinXP drops it down a notch for me. Still a shadow of the Creature House Expression tool though.
Oh... I have to drop this. Not freeware, you can't buy just the upgrade to Design without buying the entire Expression Suite... and you can't upgrade from Creature House version(s) either.
Simply put, I had to drop my 4 down to a 2.
The interface is light years ahead of the Avalon and CTP versions though.

Registration, Hotmail etc now seems to be optional, I chose not to register and was allowed to the download page.

Igive it a 4 because IMO the usability could be better... Microsoft tried in certain cases to reinvent the wheel, but it is not as bad as it seems the fist time. 30 minutes working in this program made me quite happy about it, it has several functions that are VERY interesting (specially the interation between vectors and bitmaps).
Not a must have, but a good product that may be very usefull in the professional environment...

i didnt try it but i'm rating it a 5 to offset DarkMana's low score. don't ever say no one will use a microsoft product. For lots of different reasons, even a bunch you're incapable of thinking of, people WILL use it. Me personally, I'll probably stick with my Adobe products but I'm always willing to try something different.

I would try it and then rate it, but microsoft's horrendous machine (passport) doesnt work; it sits there playing with itself like the piece of crap it is. And I do remember Acrylic, it was pure crap; as a graphic designer i can attest that no one will EVER use microsoft in the professional realm of design. Period.

So you’re rating a product because you have to register on a site... Adobe wants you to pay 400 sum dollars, and all they ask you to do is register man.... Don't rate a product unless you actually try it. I think this program has a very good potential.

Now requires registration and an MSN passport - not in this life! Soon will require (no doubt)Windows Genuine Advantage just to try it. Not that interested. They took a great program from Creaturehouse, stripped it of Flash functionality (trying to protect Sparkle I suppose)and ruined the interface.
EDIT: sn1p34 - I have the last beta of this software installed, I have used it and noted the horrendous interface changes, and I own the pre-Microsoft version, so think twice yourself before criticising. As for MSN registration, I make no apologies for hating it, and I know I am not alone.

Microsoft doesn't make shareware. It's a CTP so it's freeware, who knows what the final product will be charged. You can bet it'll require Vista or work best on Vista.

Previously codenamed Acrylic, this is shaping up to be a nice tool for enterprise level design work. People will inevitably try to compare it with Photoshop because it is targeting an audience which is partially in Photoshop's market today, but Expression Graphic Designer is really not targeting the same purpose.
Naturally, this beta still has unpolished aspects. One little annoyance is that 54MB of tutorials are included in the download and not optional during install. Another is the lack of PSD support in "Save As" even though it is supported in "Export" (which also includes all the formats from Save As, too). Another is Microsoft's failure to support their own layer extensions to PNG (from the Microsoft Digital Image and Picture It! family); all PNG output in this product is flattened automatically. There is a helpful "Hint" window in the default UI layout, but the top portion is wasted due to excessively large font size of headings; I guess Microsoft thinks we are all using 2048x1536 resolution. One last flaw I want to mention: "Expression Graphic Designer" is a horribly long name. You can't shorten it to "Expression" because Expression covers a whole family of products including Interactive Designer and Web Designer. Therefore, people will wind up calling this product "GD" which obviously has other connotations. Doh!
