While nothing is probably wrong with the update itself, be careful when using this with apps based on .NET 2.0. Some programs might stop working after updating to SP2, e.g. Paint.NET (v3.36 in my case). You may have to wait until concerned apps have been updated to provide compatibility.

O.K. I'll admit it, I'm ignorant. All I know is I must have this to run some of the updated applications such as Paint.NET, and what I've read on MS. I had 1.1 installed on my old computer, so is 2.0 all I need to install on my new machine (ie downward compatible to 1.1, and below)? Where can I go to learn more about .NET Framework to find out how it can benefit me other than having it on my machine to run some select applications? Any help will be appreciated.

I based my high rating on piecing together various comments/reviews starting with some of the Beta ones. It appears like 2.0 is solid and a good foundation for future software to build on.

Does anyone know if .NET framework 2.0 enhancements are being integrated into Microsoft Office 12 or earlier versions?

Zoroaster,

Sorry to say but you're an ignorant.

First of all, i have installed Microsoft .NET v1.0.3705, v1.1.4322 and v2.0.50727 and you known how much that cost me in disk space?
Answer: 138.065.406 bytes.

If you don´t have free space in your computer for that, buy a new one. :)))))

Second, too much CPU and memory space ?
In a Centrino 2GB with 1GB of RAM like i have you don´t have that kind of problems.
Lke i Said before, buy a new computer, if you have the money. ;)))))))))))))))

Third, don´t make fun how like Microsoft and work every hard day with them. If you don´t like it,install linux and work with it.

To me, this piece of software rates 5 points. Why
?
I work with it every day, and ives me a lot of money.

Thanks to all that believe in Microsoft and their products.

It's finally here, it gets the rating of 5, I would however give it a 4 because VS2005 isn't final yet. But that diesn't matter right now.

So I downloaded both the SDK and Framework, and I'm quite happy with it so far, with some work I managed to migrate my old 1.1 code and whoopdeedoo, it seems to run smoother than ever.

Now, if only I could have VS2005 this very instant.

Zoroaster: What a pointless comment and rating. If you don't use it then move along and b**** somewhere else.

mo_mo: I wish Windows could be shipped on a single floppy but that likely won't happen. Compressed the framework with WinRAR and only saved 30 KB so Microsoft did a good job at reducing it's size.

Ignorants ignore and ignorants remove.
So, I've had .Net Framework 1.1 (updated) for years. Megas for what? Two or three progs built around it, two or three progs requiring it as opposed to thousands, built differently, built otherwise than as a MS tank, and running smoothly out of the oyster MS developped DLL & Company huge universaly interconnected system.
So, I've nevertheless installed .Net Framework 2.0. Another mountain of files, another startup service installed, another piece of ram and cpu removed... for what? In order to be able to run .Net 2.0 developped software? I don't see the point, but remember: I'm an ignorant.
So, I've removed .Net Framework 2.0. I took te opportunity to remove by the way *all* previous versions of .Net Framework (1.1 and its updates).
Now? The beat goes on. Frankly, I don't miss anything. Perhaps 2 or 3 progs will cry: we'll send them back to momy.
I don't see the point in .Net Framework. I'm an ignorant. But what has MS done to teach me what, why and how? Available documentation is geek- spelled, so I guess ignorants just don't need .Net Framework. I guess I may be doing a booboo, I guess I'll take that chance.

Different versions of the .NET CLR can be installed side-by-side. That's the way it was *designed*.

Don't remove older versions. Developers will be programming against 1.1 for some time to come.

rseiler

rseiler reviewed v2.0 Final on Oct 27, 2005

This conversation is not current for final, but I take it that there will be some issues with 1.1 apps, so it would be wise to keep 1.1 around until your apps are modified for 2.0 (if necessary). I'm not even going to bother to install 2.0 until I have an app that actually needs it, which I suspect will be quite some time.

This does not uninstall 1.x version(s) of the framework... is it safe to have both installed (will there be any incompatibility issues?)

Also is there any way of knowing if an app is using 2.x or 1.x?

I think this framework is great. There has been so many countless improvements on this version of .net. If you haven't had a chance to check out VS2005 I highly recommend it!

To answer some of the previous comments:

captainpete, VS2003 won't use .net 2.0 framework to build your projects, you will still need the 1.1 framework for that but the two frameworks should be able to coexist without any problems. I run VS2003 and VS2005 on the same machine with the two frameworks.

digThisXL, yes this is real. This is the dotnetfx.exe version that comes on the VS2005 RC CD. This was released in the first week of September, so an August 31 filedate seems right.

utomo, this will almost definitely be integrated into Vista. Supposedly any .net 1.1 or 1.0 apps SHOULD run on this framework (and may even run FASTER than on their old native framework). What do you mean by 'make the developers easier to use many things'. I find VS2005 to be very easy to use.

It's still dated ... old and Beta 2 over at Microsoft. So I have no idea, wether to 'upgrade' or not.

I have personally tested writing 1.1 applications with .Net Studio 2003 and testing them on seperate machines, one with this 'latest' 2.0 version, works almost without flaws, but the 1.1 applications require some tweaking to work at 100%, compatibility is nice.

.Net Framework 2.0 receives a 3 because it's not final yet ;P

utomo reviewed v2.0.50727.26 RC Redistributable on Oct 17, 2005

They still need to improve:
1. make it compatible with older version, so user did not need to download separate things.
2. make it integrate in the next windows xp and vista
3. make the developers easier to use many things

Is this supposed to be compatible with visual studio 2003? I installed it and tried to create a new project with vb.net and it just crashed it. Tried it a couple more times and had the same results. Back to 1.1 for now I guess. Has anyone else had this problem?

The MAZZTer

The MAZZTer reviewed v2.0.50727.26 RC Redistributable on Oct 17, 2005

.NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 are separated components and can be installed at the same time. This ensures 1.1 program compatibility while .NET 2.0 is still in beta.

I was not aware that .NET 1.1 programs could run under 2.0 at all. Probably if you don't have 1.1 installed it opts to use 2.0 rather than not run at all. I have observed that 2.0 has some classes in it that are marked as purely for 1.1 compatibility, and that the developer should use other classes instead. (IE the MainMenu class and the new MenuStrip class) So this makes sense.

However it is important to note 2.0 is mainly for developers who want to create programs with Visual Studio 2005 (also in public beta) when it is released. It is technically illegal, via the VS2K5 beta EULA, to release programs made with the beta, which includes Win32 programs and .NET 2.0 programs.

So unless you're running one of these programs, end users only really require 1.1. :)

Now for my little review. I like the new native Win XP Theme support in 2.0, although I'm annoyed that it wasn't in 1.1. I also like the implementation of XP-only features in controls, such as listview groups and tile mode.

.NET wraps the Win32 API functionality very nicely in classes, especially GUI forms. 1.1 was lacking greatly in regards to some features of some controls, requiring fallback to the Win32 API to get some controls to do what you wanted, but 2.0 has new useful layout controls and usefully extends the functionality of many controls.

Need .Net to install CleanMoCache freeware cleaner, so I installed this one and it worked just fine for me.

jogygeorge

jogygeorge reviewed v2.0 Beta 1 Redistributable (Updated) on Jul 27, 2004

Ok... so, strictly speaking maybe the 1.1 code should work with 2. However, most of the .NET software that I tried to install brought up a screen informing me that .NET was not installed and gave me an option to go to the .NET page (which happens to be the 1.1 page). If I chose not to go to the page, the installation is discontinued.

So, there you have it! Ideally it should work, if the software installs! Gave it a 3 cause .Net should always realize that it is installed and at most should say that the required version is outdated and not when its more advanced!

Microsoft need to speead up this developments. and then include the final version on win xp sp2.
So user will not got any problems with downloading big files just to support .net
and it must be backward compatible to 1.0 and 1.1, so it did not make software developer headache

DannySmurf

DannySmurf reviewed v2.0 Beta 1 Redistributable on Jun 29, 2004

Excellent. Just excellent. .NET 1.1 apps that are reconfigured to run with 2.0B1 see a modest speed increase. Performance increase for my apps that I've recompiled for 2.0 is almost 100%. And I haven't actually been able to find a bug in the Framework yet (very impressive for a beta 1).

scriptee

scriptee reviewed v2.0 Beta 1 Redistributable on Jun 29, 2004

I've used the Beta1 a while back, its not that great :p

But I must agree, the .NET framework is a pleasure to work with. A lot of people ask me what the fuss is and what makes it so great. I tell them that it doesnt do anything spectacular, but it makes things generally easier to do, and is a much more user-friendly framework for the average joe-blog like you and me :)

I chose 4 stars instead of five because to give something 5 stars essentially means its perfect, which barely anything is :) so, 4 stars untill its perfect.
