Publisher's Description

Microsoft .NET is a free, cross-platform, open-source developer platform for building many different types of applications. With .NET, you can use multiple languages, editors, and libraries to build for web, mobile, desktop, games, and IoT. You can write .NET apps in C#, F#, or Visual Basic. Whether you're working in C#, F#, or Visual Basic, your code will run natively on any compatible OS. Different .NET implementations handle the heavy lifting for you.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 is a highly compatible, in-place update to the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, 4.5, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2 and 4.7. The web installer is a small package that automatically determines and downloads only the components applicable for a particular platform.

Apparently our buddy commenter Steve doesn't comprehend two things. First, this release is a PREVIEW release. And, most obvious, this site is "beta" releases - in this case PREVIEW ... so don't moan about something not working. My god, now ridiculous.

Screwed up 3 programs which use .Net Framework 4.5.1 just fine, had to delete & go to Windows update to get 4.5.1 + updates, so install with caution...

Performance improvements have been made with version 4.5.1 of which I feel are noticeable. My least favorite version was 3.5... Too intrusive and slow. I've tried to avoid MS.NET in the past but have found some software now that I like of which requires .NET.

@Steve(above)...
Yea, was worried about something like that happening so didn't install this yet. Only when needed by whatever software I install or update.

I really dislike this 'module' & when I can manage without it I will, 90% of the time installing Win updates are taken forever patching this piece of junk on a monthly basis & if there is a failure it's usually this.

MS have produced a fixer to hopefully sort update issues with Framework which is great bar for the fact it doesn't work on the PC that has problems with it.

@Zootopia3001 - You are so right ~

Edit:

I actually totally removed .NET from my main PC & was surprised only one program actually needed it, that program was removed, glad to see the back of .NET Framework.

If it hadn't been for Catalyst which requires it I would have removed .NET Framework the moment I installed Windows. Anyway, I stopped updating at .NET version 3.5 ...
The great thing with this factory is that it gives you time, once a month on Patch Tuesday, to get other things done while most of the time it takes an eternity to have its updates settled.
The funniest thing with this cargo is when it is used by a 100kB application, when without the heavy-weight the same application could run under 300kB : just like taking a helicopter to cross the street :)
Gosh.

BetaNews apparently has not done its homework. This program is NOT for Windows 8; that OS already includes 4.5 Framework, and the installer will tell you so if you try.

I find .NET totally useless. The ONLY software I ever use that needs it is Turbotax and that's only one week out of the year, if that. I just happen to like Turbotax, what can I say. After my tax filing is done this bloatware gets uninstalled pronto. Any other software I might try to install that requires .NET gets appropriately cancelled. There's plenty of other software alternatives out there that don't require this mess being on your system, including all the endless security updates/service packs that come with it.

Update: I also forgot that starting with version 4, MS .NET starts an NGEN service automatically that slows down PC boot time considerably, particularly your LAN connection. Very frustrating. Yes, it can be disabled in services, however, with each new update to .NET 4.x(which seems to come every couple of months), the service gets set to automatic again. That's even more frustrating.

@Zoroaster
I've come across that too... A software installer that was very, very small in size but was wanting to install that .NET behemoth for it to work. That's just totally ridiculous.

Most of the negative comments don't even understand what the .Net Framework does.

1.) You don't need the framework unless you use programs written against it. I would just wait until you actually need one of these programs to use it.
2.) The Framework doesn't eat up any resources other than disk space. It's only used when a program uses it and only the libraries needed are used. It does not affect system performance when not in use EXCEPT for disk space.
3.) .Net (and Java) are not for lazy programmers, it's for programmers that don't want to recreate the wheel over and over. Why use low level API's to access TCP/IP functions when you can use a cleanly written wrapper in minimal lines of code. Further, it's not a dead language framework, it's very much alive and in use (as is Java).
4.) The file size requirements are large, BUT those requirements are only because of the installation, when all of the temp files are deleted after the install it takes far less than the install requirement states.
5.) The only versions of the framework you need are the ones that you have programs that run against them. Frankly, I wouldn't install any of them until I needed to. Why store 1.1 when it's not needed?

That said, the install is slow. :P

This is nothing but junk. I didn't download this file, but trying to get it from the Microsoft update, and it messes up both my desktop and laptop. I've also never seen a program take so long to install. I would stay away from this piece of crap.

Yet another framework I need to install. Does it's job, although it is decidedly large.

In response to the user who asked if there were any apps that use this - I use an app that until now was running on the 4.0 Beta.

As an aside, an offline installer would be nice...

jotte_ct

jotte_ct reviewed v4.0 on Apr 13, 2010

I don't understand why people will jump to install 4.0 framework version!?
What for? Just to have the "latest software" or to complain here?
Unless you are a developer and you are using Visual Studio 2010.
Else, personally I am not aware of any applications that require .NET Framework 4.0; maybe you?

mcm

mcm reviewed v4.0 on Apr 13, 2010

Just to clear up some confusion, there's just the two versions to install. Basically skip v1.1 because there are very few programs out there that require it. So all you need is v3.5 SP1 (this installer includes v2 & v3) and weighs in at 240mb plus v4 that weighs in at 50mb (36mb for x86 only).

This is quite frustrating, if your programs need dot Net 3.5, dot Net 4 won't work on them, so you have a huge list of dot Nets stretching all the way back to 1.1, what a royal mess and a PITA MS.

Input Overload reviewed v4.0 on Apr 13, 2010

I must admit MS are losing me on this one. It needs a MS uninstaller & starting again. I installed this 'Update'? Last night on on first reboot nothing worked, so after another reboot this PC seems OK. But I'm still wondering to image back a day as the PC just doesn't seem right somehow. If you are not on a fast connection it will be a pain as it's huge, IMHO my advice is to leave it until you have to install it.

Banquo

Banquo reviewed v4.0 on Apr 12, 2010

To the post below, no this does not replace any previous versions. If you have programs that require .NET framework 1.1 or 3.5 you also have to also install those versions. It's becoming a HUGE bloated mess and it's only getting worse. Come on Microsoft, this is getting pathetic.

stevvie

stevvie reviewed v4.0 on Apr 12, 2010

so does this replace 1,2,3,3.5 ? or do we still need all the other CRAP installed as WELL as this one ?????

Not quite sure what good has come from .net for USERS. Developers tend to like it, but users have to install 5+ versions, the inevitable patches, and security nightmares that often require a recompile during install. this can mean a low-mid-range system sits there patching for 20+ minutes at times!

How is this beneficial to the end-user? How many times have I seen an Intuit product get broken by a .net dependency? Should I blame Intuit or Microsoft?

Frustrating, and overall I wish we didn't have to deal with it, or it was released much more stable/complete from the getgo.

radiomaffia, the different .net framework versions install side by side. Programs written in .net target a particular version that you must have installed in order for the application to run, otherwise you will get a random error. So it sounds like you removed the earlier version of .net and is the cause of your problems.

betasun, no from the paint.net website it states that it targets 3.5 SP1 so you will still require that version in order to run the program. It is possible to get programs written in earlier versions of dotnet to run in later versions which you can google supportedRuntime for but there can be breaking changes in new versions of dotnet which can causes problems.

CyberDoc999, regarding performance the issue during say WPF development is that there can be 2 or 3 different controls that performs the same task one with basic functionality but uses less computer resources and one with more advanced functionality but uses more computer resources. So slow apps isn't necessarily the fault of the .net framework. Microsoft even release tools that can analyse your application you've written for performance letting you know the areas that are causing your app to be slow. I personally think the performance of the .net framework itself is acceptable but more can be done in the developer tooling by making performance related issues more obvious to help developers create better performing apps.

When Microsoft comes with new versions of .NET Framework I allways keep good fate that my videoconverter will do his job. Most of the times I get errormessages while converting or afterwards. This sorts out that I have to look to a new videoconverter if the problem stays after updating to a new version of the videoconverter.In the past years there were several videoconverters unussable after the update of .NET Framework. Thankyou very much Microsoft and for me counts and I can advise you : do not update to fast to a new version of .NET Framework, there is no turning back from it.

Ryusennin, what it means by that is that you can't have dotnet 1.0 and dotnet 4.0 installed at the same time. You will need to uninstall dotnet 1.0 from the control panel before being able to install dotnet 4.0. I gather this restriction should be gone when beta 2 is released.
