Didn't think much of Beta 2, but this refresh is a lot better!

Really like the new features in Powerpoint (styles, effects, etc)!

I lost my Beta 2 Key, as I needed to re-install Office, and SmartSource couldn't find my account (typical!), so I just bought a new one for £1.20 (Couldn't even get you far on a bus these days!).

Download service fee of $1.50 to download the Beta 2. WTF is that?

That nasty Ribbon is gone if you want; many will prefer the new Silver theme I bet; far more customization now; and the Windows menu is clean for a change. I created a 32,767-page Word document and it was only 2M in size using .docx format. Wow!

If you are an official Beta tester for Office 2007 you should have gotten an e-mail giving you access to ALL of the Technical Refresh files. There are seperate files for Office, Project, Sharepoint, Visio, Groove, and all the various server editions. If you need a new key there are new ones available at BetaPlace. Your old one should work though as the TR itself does not require a key. You should only need a key if you are re-installing Office.

I have found so far that the Office 2007 TR is NOT compatible with Norton Internet Security 2007 ET8 Beta with the Add-On Pack Beta. Norton will still run and Office One Note 2007 runs too. But Word, Excel etc. run but they can't open anything. Otherwise it's decent update.

Paul Skinner:- just use your beta 2 key if installing from scratch, but if you have beta 2 already installed this simply updates that copy.

EDIT:
I'm wrong this can't be installed as a stand alone application. You must have Beta 2 installed first, see:

You don't unless you were an original Beta 2 downloader.

Great stuff... has resolved a lot of the Beta 2 issues I've experienced.

As a beta 2 user how do I get hold of it without having to pay?
Do I have to wait for an email?

I'm guessing I didn't make "As a beta 2 user" clear enough to you. I *AM* an original beta 2 user.

I really like the new interface. It is very intuitive. I mainly use Outlook and Word. Just great (although I would not pay for it).

Hmm. Well it's pretty much the same again, only with a new UI... which is either funky as hell or irritating Micky Mouse sh*te depending on your taste. It's cute, in a girly sort of way...

This release sure lives up to its Beta name, but is still far too buggy to be of any use. In my tests I've been unable to open meeting requests (crash), and every two or three minutes it falls over, even while minimised in my system tray. I love the new interface, and I'm looking forward to its official release...

Its the most awesome Office that I have ever seen.
Open Office is nothing if compared with it.
Very clean and easy to use interface. Also contains alot of new features. New look is also cooooool.

So far so good... I actually really like the "ribbons". I wish they had done more with the tasks in Outlook; like having projects or at least hierarchical to-do's.

Just an FYI about Office 2007... the search functions seem to be tied to MS Desktop Search. Looks like another way for MS to push out competition... probably not so coincidentally, they announced a new enterprise search product
which ties into their desktop and web search engines. I think this is where we'll see them go head-to-head with Google. Hopefully Coppernic
and X1 will find a way to put up a fight. Or maybe it'll end up in another antitrust lawsuit in a couple years...

Activation is working now! Yay! =D

Anyway... I'm liking the new interface although it would have been nice if it was office suite wide (hopefully that'll come).

I've not had too much chance to play around with it all yet but have written an essay using Word earlier. I found it fairly easy to find my way around and think it's a good step forward.

Outlook is a bit of a dissapointment as it's not changed much from 2003. It's nice to have RSS feeds though.

All in all good work Microsoft and thanks for making it a public Beta!

WOW! I like the new office and the Vista scheme for it(blue scheme I don't like much). I love how they did the features and got rid of the Menus(File, Edit...) on the toolbar. Activation is being maintenance so you have to wait. I'm sure it'll be back up soon. Great Job Microsoft :)

Glad it's not just me. I know my Internet connection is working because Outlook 2007 will send and receive EMail, but the Activation Wizard claims it can't find a connection.

Anyone solved this yet? If not, Outlook will last about a week!

mistertonee

mistertonee reviewed vBeta 2 on May 24, 2006

so now that the activation is done its time to play!

krgood

krgood reviewed vBeta 2 on May 24, 2006

It installed ok,and then the activation screen came up. When attempting to activate, it fails saying I have no Internet connection which is not the case. Anyway failing activation, the product then starts a countdown of times I can run the product. Not must use there as every time I started my email appl, the count got lower which means in very short order, I cannot use Outlook. You cannot install this release in a test mode as it uninstalled my office 2003 intstall. I then uninstalled Office 2007 and it did not restore my 2003 install so I had to reinstall Office 2003. I think I will leave the Betas alone until the product is released and the first service pack is released. If you are going to install the 2007 beta, do it on a total test system as there will be problems at some point in time.

While I am a huge MS fan, and applaud their effort to do something new, I have to admit that I really hate the new office so far. I felt the changes were too radical. Gone is the familiar File|Edit|Help style menu - everything is named differently, and thus not so easy to locate what you need. This also doesn't lend itself well to consistenty between applications.
The toolbars are HUGE, and I'm one of those people that tries to minimize too and menu bars as much as possible - this is just awful. Not only are they taking up major screen space, but they aren't laid out well, and seem to waste resources on useless eye candy. Do I really need huge icons to pick a paragraph style? A dropdown used to suffice, why all the hoo-hah now? That's just one example of course, and before everyone screams at me, I'm not an idiot, I'm aware you can customize the interface to some degree. What I'm saying is, that as a software developer with 20+ years of experience behind me, *I* found the interface confusing and un-intuitive, and I think that if sat a computer novice down before this application, they'd be completely lost.

And for what it is worth, the application has a tendency to bomb on me. Probably just a beta thing, but it happens pretty frequently, which doesn't add any stars to the rating.

Installed, played around and I really like it,
the new UI is great, the tabbed interface and the fade effects are really cool too. Outlook is the one program that didn't changed too much in my opinion but is not bad too.

You do know you can change the color of the interface in the options menu, and I find the interface to be very nice. Easy to get around and very unclustered.

Thank you Nehemoth! The SmartSource download @$%& wasn't very smart... it's broken.

Downloading now. Rating will be updated once I fool with it, but right now from what I hear the interface should be easier to work with.

Once downloaded it installed ok.

First impressions are umm. Will wait and see where it leads. Not over impressed with the menu or colour schemes, but that is personal preference.

Overall it seems to work ok.

Who knows might be a good program. But I guess I wouldn't know since I keep getting errors and am unable to download it because the "server is busy". Come on Microsoft you got billions yet you can't afford a descent server?

yokozuna

yokozuna reviewed vBeta 2 on May 23, 2006

I have tried to download it for more than 12 hours. And what? "An unknown error occurred while processing your request. This is most likely due to a connection failure. Please try again." I have no problems with downloading Opera or OpenOffice.
Try again? I do not think so.

tenebrusmke79, my connection is 4Mb/s download and 1024 Kb/s upload. It should be enough, I guess. Moreover, my Win XP IS NOT pirated. So?

"- this is mostly bugfix release.
- this version was left running for whole night with other app. using 100% CPU, and it downloaded over 15.000 messages without hassle, so it seems that filters bug has gone"

Nah! You can pry my Exchange/Outlook outta my cold, dead hands! :-)
