Windows Mail has the best spam filter ever created. catches well over 99.9% of all spam.

Wrong title. this is for Vista's Windows Mail application, not for Outlook 2003.

"Does exactly what it says on the tin"
Brilliant. Blocks lots of SPAM.

now that I've fixed the missing cab file (apparently it sometimes get "removed" by SP2 - or so I read!) - this is highly recommended.

The only feature I'd like to see added is the ability to NOT download a whole email if it can flag it as spam (could it not just download the message headers and let me decide if I want to download it properly)
It seems a waste of bandwidth to download everything before filtering!

Works as advertised.
Now why give this a "1" when everyone else thinks it is great. Is it possible the missing "cab" is from a bad Installation on your part?

updated quite happily in the past, but this one won't install (complains about missing .cab file)

won't install via windows update either...

I think this is the first MS product that I've ever given a 5 to.

Now that you can get these updates automatically through the new version of Microsoft Update, it's even better.

Using this in conjunction with the open-source and very simple SpamBayes in Outlook 2003, I get almost ZERO spam and no false positives that I've ever found, and I check once a week.

They must improve:
1. Auto update.
2. Allow us to teach if something wrong, they must be able to make it better in the future.

I've always controlled its options through Actions menu > Junk E-mail > Junk E-mail Options. Perhaps the user who foolishly rated it a 1 should learn how to press F1 and use the Help option once in a while.

Nice and accurate. Very, very rarly does it mis-identify a 'friendly' message as spam. An it requires no tedious up-front training. Seemless and effective. Nice job MS.

The Junk Mail filter is a great feature of Outlook, which in my opinion, has always been the best email client. Yes, I have tried thunderbird, and I didn't really like it.

Geez, could utomo do LESS research?

1. No filter will ever get "all" the junk, but you should check your Junk E-mail Options and set the level to High (the default is Medium). I get very good results at High, with only a few false-positives. The best thing to me about Microsoft's filter is the low false-positives rate. You should also check the Safe Senders tab, to make sure you didn't accidentally add a spammer's address or domain. Even if you didn't do it yourself, you could have had spyware do it for you, so check it periodically. Important: If you ever try to unsubscribe to spam (which is usually a bad idea) by using "reply" or "forward" then make sure to UN-check the box "Automatically add people I e-mail to the Safe Senders list." Otherwise, you will be adding spammers to the safe list.

2. There is no need to uninstall. This update only affects the Junk E-mail Filter, which is not a separate component of Outlook. When Outlook is installed, the Filter is installed too. If you want to get rid of Outlook entirely, just uninstall Outlook using Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. If you want to stop using the Junk E-mail Filter, just turn it off in the Options. Going back to an older version of the filter is pointless because Microsoft's approach is not user-trainable except for Safe List exceptions. (It is based on Bayesian technology, contrary to widespread misconception, but the training is done by Microsoft based on millions of spam messages, before posting the resulting data as part of these updates.)

3. The English version of Office comes with French and Spanish tools which are optional components during installation. In a "Typical" installation, these are marked as "Install On Demand" which means that if you try to use French or Spanish in an Office app, it will pop up and ask if you want to install those features. If you click Yes, then Windows Installer will automatically install the extra components. If you don't want the French grammar checker to be considered available to your installation, you can create a transform file (*.MST) to suppress it at the time you install Office. This requires an "Administrative install point" which is explained in the Office Resource Kit.

MIcrosoft need to work more:
It still did not get all the junk, still high percentage.
It did not update automatically.
and it is too big for dialup user.

There is another problems, I already have previous version, I try to install this update, but refused. but when I try to do office update, I got newer update. Why ?

and the office update also always offering me french grammar checker, why ? I did not need French. I use English.

Note; better if microsoft also put the Office authentification checker in this Filter. so dont support the pirated copy of MS Office

BTW, how can I uninstall it ?

Outlook 2003 is a huge improvement over previous versions, but the best new feature is this Spam Filter, and since Microsoft actually updates it on a monthly basis, it is always getting better.

To the user who gave this update a 1 rating claiming that "Outlook sucks"... You need to stop being a troll and only review products that you use.

puppy22

puppy22 reviewed vv1 (March 2005) on Mar 8, 2005

I given a half the way rating just because i believe SpamBayes Outlook Plugin is much much better... i agree that the spam database of MS cannot compare to anyone else, but still you cannot do much modifications on how it will act in a spam. Also i disagree with the example you said cause if i do a review for a sports car for example, i do it for people who can drive a sportscar and not for someone who has no license. it's the same with computers. if you do not know, just ask to learn. Simplicity most of the times is covering a lack of functionality...!

The Junk E-mail Filter in 2003 is much better than the Junk E-mail Filter in 2002 (XP). It is actually more effective than most Bayesian filters. Microsoft generates these periodic updates for the Outlook 2003 filter by applying Bayesian techniques to massive volumes of spam that Microsoft collects. Because their sample size is large and because the average end-user does not properly train Bayesian filters, Microsoft's approach ends up being very effective in the real world. Last week, I ran into an Outlook user who was using a Bayesian filter but hadn't reviewed his "suspected spam" folder in 14 months! Also, he didn't even know how to mark a false positive, so his Bayesian filter was never getting better over time like it ought to. For a small percentage of people, Bayesian filters may work best. For the rest of the world (people whose VCR's have been flashing 12:00 for the last 20 years), the Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter kicks butt.

The built in Junk email filter is just that, Junk.

Try SpamBayes which is much better open source filter, highly effective.
