Too bad it's for Windows XP ~only~.

I use it every single day 3 days a week for storing the passwords for almost 550 hundred of servers our company, HP, supports.
It has been pretty useful and straight to the point. It just does what you need it to do. Simple, easy to use.
Obviously, one always have to keep a backup of your info (come on its an MS product!), but I have only faced a failure once.
Choose it if you wish a fast-simple-easytouse-portable-passwordprotected-handy application.
Regards.

It does what it's suppose to do. Simple to use and very straight-forward. 5/5 on this one. Nice job MS, would certanly like to see more of such handy tools.

Somewhat malicious. It is not reliable. Seems to hang explorer.exe at 99% of CPU usage frequently beyond repair. (thus hard-reset is only solution, because task manager can't kill this explorer.exe when this happens.)

The program hung when trying to change the password. Uninstalled, and though the files remain fairly easy to find on the PC, they do remain encrypted (and hence unreadable). This is a handy app for most folks. I highly recommend maintaining a backup of any files stored in MPF though.
As for the strength of the security, MSFT states that this is not meant to be be a high quality file encryption program. It is simply meant as a means for the casual user to secure files from other relatively trusted people who share the PC with them.
I had to rate a 3 because of the password hang issue, which could result in lost data if the user doesn't have a backup. I can see the program improving though. It is only 1.0 after all ;)

ok where to start.
firstly, this is too little, too late.
windows 98 should have had a private folder/file encryption functionality but it didn't, nor 2K, nor really XP, i know it does, but it's pathetic.
private folder is too little, too late.
using it for just five minutes i found out icon caching problems, weak encryption on the password schema, plus who the hell is gonna trust Microsoft with their private files?
WGA phoning home, this app needs WGA?
no fu**ing thanks.

Does what it's s'posed to. And, hey, it's NOT called Windows LIVE Private Folder. A welcome reprieve.

Not bad, but my posting is warning for a NoWGA version. Search on Demonoid.

Why rate the product low when you didn't read or understand the system requirements on the download page?
"The following hardware and software are required to run Microsoft Private Folder 1.0:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Professional Edition and Media Center Edition with SP2"

Jordanr05 said all: Why isn't this feature incorporated into windows? Works fine for me in another partition and with another name!

Very simple and works well.
The desktop icon can be removed if you right-click the lock in the system tray and select options.
Graig reviewed v1.0 on Jul 6, 2006
Looks good for me except that it shows up on the desktop as My Private Folder. Not so private after all. But had no problem browsing to another location other than C: to install it.
