A major negative issue is the fact that the "Birds Eye View" is showing pictures that are at least 4 years old (they're still showing a car I sold 4 years ago when I look up a particular address). Topography changes too often to use something that old.

Navigation within the tool is too slow and sloppy. I stick with Google Earth for now.

This is cool and 'lorg' is a fool. Even on the MSFT download page system requirements include FF >2.0

For all what it's worth:
Microsoft Virtual Earth 3D runs just fine with Firefox. Just restart your browser after the installation .
No need for IE !!! (that's what I like about it the most ;)
And no, it isn't stand alone program, in fact is no need for a stand alone program.
No local saving of countless MBs of maps like in Google Earth...just open the live search page in Firefox and you're on

This is getting better, finally anout the earth and not just US.
The setup has one photo beyond the center of the world and it is almost from the other side of the world (Toronto).
The content, maps, are much better than during the springtime 2007.

Much better than Google Earth. Pull them up and compare. Microsoft did a nice job on it. And it's still beta as is googles. Competion is sweet, it is making both companies go all out. In the end we win.

Far better imagery of the UK than Google Earth. Virtually every town in the UK with a population over 50,000 has excellent images.

Just watched an article on the news showing MS sending planes over Europe which photograph areas from five different angles with resolution that gives 15" per pixel giving you a proper image when you tilt it rather than a flattened "top down" view. They flew over 1 million miles last year alone over the EU.

Gives view maybe of the US territory, but the earth view is a joke. Why they call it Earth.. this Virtual US 3D product.
Selling a product with this name may cause class action suits. This has nothing to do with the earth.

This is one of the best Viturial Earth prouducts I have used in a long time, the maps, and the photo's are closer to the real thing and clear'er then the other company's never have I seen any thing like this, this is top in it's class if possible I would give it a 10 +

Poor installer with lots of things to download...

English version Windows only !!!!

And don't forget that MS Virtual Earth wich uses Live local images has (almost) no image outside the US territory...

The install is poorly written, as with everything MS makes now, it's junk! I don't know why I even tried to use it. I use to love and stick up for MS, can't stand them now.

utomo

utomo reviewed v1.0 Beta on Nov 7, 2006

It is good, if we have some competitions here.

But downloading small file, and then installing over internet is not a good idea.
we also need to save bandwith.

This is another excellent programme that is similar to others that have surfaced recently, but provides some nice extra's.

On the point of it not installing, it may have problems with certain firewall and other security programmes. Some of those cut the user out of the computer that much that many programmes will not install.

There are so many factors that if he is knowledgable about computers as he claims he should be able to work out the cause of the problem. That would be constructive as he could then let Microsoft know of the problem so others won't face the same situation.

I was surprised that there was 3D building data for my campus, although incomplete (half of our buildings are flat, apparently :). I also enjoyed the 3D texturing of the buildings, something Google Earth lacks. This tool is very good at 3D, and hopefully in the future there will be better data for tools such as this and Google Earth to work with, to make for even better quality 3D landscapes.

coover, it's a "BETA"!, cut it some slack.

Awesome. No problems here!

Some people actually think it's MS's fault for errors on individual's computers, when it's more than likely user error.

I am giving this one a five because it works as it should.

coover

coover reviewed v1.0 Beta on Nov 7, 2006

I don't believe this one is quite ready yet for prime time. It may be a good program, but after what seems like a complicated installation which includes a couple of downloads (after the initial download) and clicking on "Run" several times, the installation fails, with an error message indicating that a file was not found.

Oh well, back to the drawing boards for this one.

Amended Review ... Sorry I upset you guys with a poor review, but I am an experienced expert computer user since 1981 and there is no user error here. It simply will not install on my computer, and that deserves a grade of 1 from me. And yes, I do understand the difference between a beta application and one that is no longer in beta. But any application that will not install has a major problem of some sort. In my case, I'll assume that there is some application on my computer that is causing the installation problem, but if it is on my computer, it's probably on lots of computers. By the way, my computer is clear of viruses, trojans, and other malware.
