WSUS is the new name for the next version of Windows Server Update Service (WSUS). WSUS (previously SUS 2.0) is a feature of Windows Server. It is a patch and update tool that offers an effective and quick way to help you get secure and stay secure. It represents the first step toward delivering core software distribution and update management infrastructure in Windows. It has both a server and client component.
WUS will support updating Windows operating systems as well as all Microsoft corporate software over time. When initially released, it will support updating Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Office XP, Office 2003, SQL Server 2000, MSDE 2000, and Exchange Server 2003.
The Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) 2.0 English beta must be installed prior to installing the WSUS server.

this may be a good product
but there are two thing that are several isues that came up
(1) i couldnt get it installed on my machine because the msi wasnt recognised.
(2) i then found out that its only compatable with windows xp sp1
(3) you got to have sql 2000 or there equivalient too.
Its best if you read up about it first

Not bad but i am not sure if i want to install Background Intelligent Transfer Services (BITS) 2.0 English beta (BETA) product on my production server. Has anyone encountered any issues with this during a large deployment or update request?

With RedHat charging outrageous fees for their satellite network MS got this one right by making it free and easy to use. This is definitely a step in the right direction towards making our infrastructures more secure!

Not sure why it's taken BetaNews a month to post this as being released, but nevertheless this is an incredible product!
It is very easy to install, configure, and deploy to your network clients, and it's much faster and functional as well. Highly recommended for any mid-to-large network that is trying to minimize bandwidth consumption while maximizing Windows Update deployment.

It's name has changed and is NO LONGER called WUS - it is now called WINDOWS SERVER UPDATE SERVICES (WSUS) as WUS was misleading. Great product - what SUS should have been!!!

The irony perhaps is that I am looking forward to this piece of *free* software going gold far than anything MS has released in the past 5 years. Wish it had support for 3rd party apps right from the start but we'll see. MSI packaging and AD rollouts are not the solution I like, too many variables and every package is different.

Finally! This is a newer release than the beta from November 2004 which was already fantastic. WUS 2.0 does NOT require a domain but an Active Directory domain makes it easier to push the registry settings to client machines which tell them to pull from your WUS server instead of Microsoft's public Windows Update site. With AD, a few clicks is all it takes to push a standard configuration via Group Policy to thousands of machines. If you don't have a domain, you first have to configure your clients using other methods. (If you already did this with SUS 1.0, you can avoid doing it again by upgrading your SUS 1.0 server in-place or by replacing with a WUS 2.0 server which has the exact same host name as the 1.0 server did.) Also, on typical non-domain networks, users usually have administrative rights, which means you can't prevent people (or malware which sneaks into their sessions) from overriding the settings and disabling updates.

This is a great beta, much better than SUS 1.0, but this release (supposedly January 27, 2005 according to BetaNews) is NOT newer than the original beta. I downloaded this one and compared it to the one I downloaded on November 23, 2004 and they are byte-for-byte identical. You can also look at the Digital Signature on the file's Properties. It was signed by Microsoft on November 9, 2004.
