Still a great product. Go out and waste money on a paper calender for the people who hate this.

Do they have a three year old coding this program? I know TV shows use twins b/c of child labor laws. I'm just wondering b/c this thing has been at more or less a standstill compared to other Mozilla projects.

Good software package. Thanks to Wabonline. I couldn't find a link for holidays until you listed it here. As for being out of date like the one user said. Not sure what u downloaded. It came over fine for me. I new it was up to date because it listed the new daylight savings time thats arrives this Sunday. So how is that out of date. I checked future months, all holidays are fine. As for be sluggish. Came up quick for me. And my pc is 4 years old. As an FYI, Lightning is also good. No probs. there either with speed or add on's. I kinda use lightning with Thunderbird more often, but its good to have a stand alone calender program like this also..

Nice free calendar app. On the downside its a bit sluggish and the development of this project is taking ages!

The graphics are nice, but the program is slow and klutzy in comparison to other calendar programs. One must wonder at the slow pace of progress for this project vs. other Mozilla projects.

Fit and finish are coming along nicely.
Do not bother downloading the holiday calendars.
They are WAY out of date, the Chinese is 2004 and the US is equally old.

Perhaps they should update them once a year, just for fun, if they are going to be offered.

As I don't have any Microft Office installed on my Office PC and only use Open Office Sunbird was a Godsend as Outlook Express does not come with a calender !..I use an online calender and was able to easily import my online calender files into Sunbird. I was unable to import them with Personal PIM ?? Does anyone know whether there is a way yet to import only what isn't on the calender..because everytime I do an import..its double entries for everthing !! I had to delete everything and re-import again.Looking towards new feautres as they become available...so far so good (almost)

Sunbird and Rainlendar complement each other IMHO. I use both since they both work with .ics files. Rainlendar is always on for the unobtrusive desktop reminder while I open Sunbird when I need to see a larger view (week, month) for planning purposes.

TC17

TC17 reviewed v0.3 RC2 on Oct 9, 2006

This is an excellent calendar. I don't agree with another post here. I much prefer this over the TINY Rainlendar.

The only calendar I would say is a little better is Googles calendar.

AntiochMedia

Hate to Troll, but I really don't understand the need for such a robust, clunky calendar system. SunBird is one of the best and will become more and more powerful - but that being said - on comparison with Rainlendar, which I use, what is Sunbird really offering to spur productivity? Rainlendar is a great calendar with skinning, ICS support, and most importantly, an extremely small memory footprint, ability and acts as a desktop widget for Windows.

I use calendars to keep me on task and having to open the calendar and maintain a robust calendar system is a task I just don't want.

Great calendar that allows to open and layer multiple proprietary and .ics calendars (iCal).
.ics calendars can be synced to PPC via tcpip with Finchsync.

zeon reviewed v0.3 Alpha 2 on May 13, 2006

If all you want is a simple calendar this does an acceptable job, but it's still very early in its development and gets relatively little attention, meaning it's quite unpolished and can be clunky to use. I wish I could say goodbye to Outlook's calendar, but Sunbird has a way to go yet before it can be a real replacement. The team really needs to focus on getting the basics down and making the UI as clean and usable as possible.

The only reason I give this a 4 and not a 5 (previously I gave it a 5) is just because it rarely gets updated. I also don't understand the negative reviews here, as this is one of the nicer looking calendars, and is free.

I've tried Rainlendar, but its just way too small of a calendar to be useful.

This Sunbird calendar could use a lot more skins also. Although the ones that comes with it is nice I think.

I'm a rabid Fx user, and have tried most of the MozDev add-ons. I agree with the reviewers who commented on the unfinished look and feel, as well as the weak notification. Still a work in progress.

I'm currently using Planzo, from planzo.com, an online calendar application that's not too bad. Also use Rainlendar, but don't care for the need to customize it to get rid of the "cutes." Will probably drop it for that reason.

AntiochMedia

AntiochMedia reviewed v0.3 Alpha 1 on Nov 4, 2005

A good start, but perhaps I'm naive. How can it take a project so long to make such little progress? I switched from Outlook 2003 to Mozilla Thunderbird as I surrendered up my Exchange server and realized that I had no reason to use Exchange over any other client.

I love Thunderbird -- it just doesn't have a nicely integrated Calendar. So I grabbed a nightly build of lightning - which was very similar to this Alpha -- a month ago. It was okay. I mean seriously - it was simply okay.

I actually use Rainlender -- which is a calendar, but doesn't integrate scheduling with Thunderbird - I understand -- just that it's a much more practical calendar app at the moment.

@dtanderson, you will have to wait around 6 months. The name of the project is "Lightning" (= Thunderbird + Sunbird). It will be more like Outlook rather than OE.
However, I would choose EssentialPIM (www.essentialpim.com) as a standalone and free PIM.

dtanderson

dtanderson reviewed v0.2 RC on Dec 23, 2004

This is very nice, I just wish that they would integrate it with Thunderbird so that we would only have one app instead of two.

A four (4) for what is so far in it's development state and for the roadmap it is taking. Those Mozilla folks are good at what they do. Still an Opera user, though they keep tempting me...

For those looking for a more developed PIM/Calendar, take a look at the very nice (and small) EssentialPIM ( http://fileforum.betanew...sentialPIM/1102428266/1 ). It is what I am currently using.

Banquo

Banquo reviewed v0.2 Beta on Nov 23, 2004

DigitalSin, what do you mean you installed it on Firefox and Thunderbird? This is a standalone program, you do not need either of the others to use it. Works just fine for me but as they said it is a very early experimental build.

DigitalSin

DigitalSin reviewed v0.2 Beta on Nov 22, 2004

Update: I apologize, I actually had downloaded this version but for some reason when I unzipped the archive there was nothing in the root directory (no sunbird.exe). So I went to the product page and installed for FF and Tbird assuming it was the same version, just not standalone. I downloaded this again and extracted and the exe was there, and thus far no problems :)

Tried several times to install on both FireFox(1.0) and Thunderbird (0.9). On FireFox the calendar worked the first time. I closed it and tried to open it again. Nothing shows up (the calendar window does not appear). Reinstalled a couple times, same behavior.

Got it installed on Thunderbird, and when I open the calendar it looks slightly garbled. I clicked an icon on the toolbar (multi-week or something, all other icons were disabled) and the program become unresponsive and Tbird crashed. Reinstalled on TBird, same behavior.

I have used this calendar with Mozilla in the past and have had similar problems (different machines). Hope it gets improved, I would like a nice alternative to Outlook as the calendar is the only reason I keep Outlook installed.

Running WinXP Pro SP2.

snowflake: you got it completely wrong... Calendar (sunbird) is already part of Mozilla (suite), and the whole idea is to make it a standalone app, like firefox and thuderbirdso this is an ALPHA version of 0.2 based on an ALPHA version of mozilla 1.8... so don't be surprised if not everything works.
and if you prefer you can use firefox and install the xpi (extension) instead.
anyway, as far as sunbird goes, been using the nightlies for a while, and it seems this release is just to show off the new look of it (theme and icon). it works well for what i do, is free, and simple enough, it will definitely improve as more work is done to it

SG1969: Where is the calendar in Mozilla? I've used Mozilla since 0.something and I've never seen the calendar function. Scary!
I've rated Mozilla Sunbird 3 out of 5 based on the stand alone issue. There's still some issues that need to be fixed but there's plenty of versions before 1.0 :)

Great program, but careful if you install it in the same directory as an older version of Sunbird. It doesn't care over any info that you had entered.

zridling

zridling reviewed v0.2 Alpha on Aug 19, 2004

Although it doesn't come close to Calendarscope or even Deviant Organizer by GemX, it would be unfair to compare it to those apps. Setting up the time zone in Sunbird is quite difficult if there's no recognizable city near you. Also, there are no multi-month views at a glance, and one must open a complex dialog to enter a new event rather than directly entering it in the calendar view. Still, a promising start, indeed.

darthbeads

darthbeads reviewed v0.2 Alpha on Aug 19, 2004

This is absolutely nothing like Rainlendar. This is a personal information manager with a calendar and task list. I really like the layout and the interface, and I will watch the development of this product closely. When it has Palm-Sync-ability and starts to get some of the installation and extension support of Firefox and Thunderbird, I will be very excited. Pretty impressive for a .2 beta release!

Like Rainlendar on steroids.

I'd give it a 5 if it had that desktop feature like Rainlendar, and if it could stay in the system tray.
