Was my favorite browser at the time. Seamonkey is the next line after this version of Mozilla. Not much has changed since this version except the security updates in Seamonkey, and the menu bar changes color in secure sites. Somehow i miss the Mozilla name. Never liked Seamonkey, though i use it allot. In anycase, if your out there and like to experiment with old software, give this a shot and see what the best browser was back in the day.

Zridling, Why put a neg. review Like this. Its a only a security update. If u liked 1.7.12, u will like this. As for the rest of my review. Its still the best browser in my opinion. Seamonkey 1.01 still renders allot of webpages in wrong manner for me. Plus my fav. theme- Nautipolis only works with Mozilla, Including 1.7.13. Opera is a cluttered mess in my opionion, just like Netscape, my former favorite browser. IE is ok, does the job, but if the 7.0 is any indication, its going the way of the Opera-Netscape. Plus i always liked the email client with Mozilla. Thunderbird doesnt give u the bcc option or an easy way to choose your email clients like the Mozilla email client. Keep up the updates group. People like myself still use this.

Mozilla 1.7.x was fine, but now that the new version - Seamonkey - is out, and is working fine for me in Windows 2000 & XP, and has a few added and useful features, I don't have a reason to go back to the older 1.7.x version of the Mozilla suite.

I started using mozilla some 5 months back,I like it very much in many aspects like Tabbed browsing,Easy downloadability, the search engines available at the right end,Security and more over the way it diaplays data.

Only thing I expect improvement is custmizability of tool bars.In that aspect IE and Opera are ahead.

This suite is very good, but I guess I still prefer Firefox (and Thunderbird) because (for me) it's easier to tweak. But it still is a great all-around package and it has it all.

Yours Truly

Yours Truly reviewed v1.7.11 RC on Jul 28, 2005

In my opinion, the Mozilla Suite of internet applications ("Web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple -- all your Internet needs in one application") exceeds the stand-alone Firefox (which is a browser only) in a variety of ways.

The Mozilla Suite (all apps) is smaller in overall size and consumes much less memory (RAM): the size of Firefox (browser), Thunderbird (email), Nvu (web page editor), and an IRC program, when all added together are greater in overall size, and if all apps are running together in memory they consume much more memory.

Mozilla Suite also offers a working "Quick Launch" feature which, when enabled, speeds up it's start-up time in opening 'any' of it's apps (browser, mail, etc.). None of the other independent programs mentioned offer this working feature.

However both the Mozilla Suite and Firefox, etc., offer add-ons, called extensions, which when installed offer an increased number of enhancements.

I have and do use both the Mozilla Suite and Firefox & Thunderbird. I say, to each their own.

I am personally looking forward to the upcoming release of the SeaMonkey Suite, an "all-in-one internet application suite" like the present Mozilla Suite, but it will be much improved. However, presently it is still in the alpha stage - i.e., not yet ready for prime time use.

Terribly outdated compared to Firefox, but still better than IE. People say it has more features but actually that's not true at all. You can add mail, chat and everything else to Firefox. Mozilla does not allow you to right click in the bookmarks menu to sort, rename or delete entries, which Firefox has had for a long time now. Firefox has more themes and extensions available, and being their flagship browser now gets all the development attention. I found Mozilla to be stable, but no more so than Firefox. All in all it's a nice browser but Firefox is better.

DudeBoyz

DudeBoyz reviewed v1.7.10 on Jul 21, 2005

Still more stable than Firefox, and the tweaks and security additions to this suite do not seem to be causing any issues that I can find. Browses efficiently and fast, with more full features than Firefox.

Firefox is fine for what it is, but Mozilla Suite is a comprehensive solution. :)

foxtyke

foxtyke reviewed v1.7.8 on Jun 1, 2005

I recommend Mozilla Suite for those who are in need of a full package solution which includes integrated e-mail, web editor, and more into a nice package with the browser.

For those who miss the original Netscape suite, this may be your solution, it feels just like Netscape used to feel back before everything went to... well you know where.

I give it a five out of five...

I found this news report, released today, quite frightening.

http://story.news.yahoo....50228/tc_pcworld/119833

False Sense of Security?

"The public warning of the security vulnerabilities is evidence that the Mozilla Foundation's products give a false sense of security, says Thor Larholm, a senior security researcher with PivX Solutions in Newport Beach, California.

"The only reason Mozilla and Firefox have a good track record in security with a low number of security vulnerabilities is simply because they don't tell anyone about them," Larholm says via e-mail.

"The Mozilla Foundation has fixed hundreds if not thousands of security vulnerabilities over the last few years without notifying the world and without providing security patches, instead they have simply just told their users to upgrade," he says. "We have to remember that all software has security vulnerabilities, the only difference is in how we anticipate them and inform the world about their existence."

Pure garbage. Buggy, slow, irrelevant.

Continuing to code this would be like coding to add "features" to something like Netscape 4. What would be the point?

Go for Avant, Maxthon, Opera, or even Firefox (FF is cut from the same cloth, but I'll admit it's better than Mozilla).

Note to the developers: Stop wasting time on this and do something useful.

I do'nt see a whole lot of difference between Mozilla and Firebird. Sure, Firebird has more plugins available and some of those are no h*ll. Plain old Mozilla is just as fast as Firebird. I like having the email client built-into Mozilla much like Opera's m2. I've tried Firebird several times but I end up keeping good ol Mozilla.

"An irrelevant product now that Firefox has reached 1.0 status - it should be allowed to die now and quickly at that."

Please note that Firefox still trunks from the Mozilla base code. This means that Mozilla 1.8 will be the basis for many components of Firefox 1.1, so Mozilla is still relevent.

Mozilla 1.8 should be out in Jan 2005, then Firefox 1.1 the month after if the scedule holds.

This is not to say that Firefox is a universal panacea. I share billygoatee's assessment that it's more hype than substance (I use Maxthon). Howerver, given a choice limited to Firefox and this bloated beast in a tutu, I'll take Firefox.

billygoatee

billygoatee reviewed v1.8 Alpha 4 on Nov 17, 2004

I would avoid Mozilla 1.8a4 like the plague. It's always something with this piece of s***. Recently, it stopped displaying my bookmarks on the toobar. I can no longer drag and drop bookmarks there, too.

Mozilla 1.7.3 is a big pain in the ass, too. Several times the pref files mysteriously became corrupted and I lost all of my email preferences and it wouldn't display my email folders. I couldn't even access the preferences option from the toolbar menu.

I tried Firefox 1.0. Overrated. Yeah, it's fast, and have nice features, but it's not worth jack squat unless it works correctly on most websites, in particular, sites designed with IE browsers in mind. I found myself switching back frequently to IE because Firefox just couldn't handle the job.

If you're worried about IE security holes, obviously, Mozilla is an alternative, that's if you don't mind putting up with glitchy, unreliable software. I'm no fan of IE or MS products, but as far as I'm concerned, Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape or whatever... they ALL suck!

This version doesn't work at all, like Mozilla 1.8 Alpha 2 didn't. First time I loaded it, it just displays the orange Mozilla splash screen. So I ended it with Windows taskmanger. Then I loaded it again and this time it started, but without displaying images, and it froze. Taskmanger again, start again, same result.
I love Mozilla and it's been my default browser for two years but this new 1.8 branch is very poor on my Windows PC.
PS: It would be nice if Mozilla Sunbird is incorporated in Mozilla.

ogman

ogman reviewed v1.8 Alpha 2 on Jul 18, 2004

Page loads are very quick and this browser has the most complete combination of security, features, and speed. Firefox is the lighter, up and coming version. Either are excellent and far better than IE or any IE based browser. Only play with alpha versions if you are willing to accept bugs and incomplete features. Otherwise, download Mozilla 1.7.1 or Firefox 0.92.

This browser kicks so much IE butt, it is a shame. Tabs, pop-up blocker, fully configureable email client, excellent news client, very stable. I am no software programmer, but this is about as good as it gets, and it gets updated frequently. How many updates has IE gotten in recent memory? Besides the XP service pack 2? This one is a keeper!

Upon using 1.7, I have to say that it certainly is a well constructed and viable (or is that necessary) alternative to that piece of Swiss Cheese known as IE6. I like this better than the Firefox/Thunderbird combo for now.

prefab

prefab reviewed v1.7 on Jun 19, 2004

Mozilla is my preferred browser because
1) it is free, opensource and runs on all OS I use;
2) tabbed browsing (actually this is why I first switched from IE);
3) I can configure it to be as safe as I want (cookies, popup);
4) the mail & newsgroup clients are excelent and the visual HTML editor is more than capable for the casual job;
5) for web development the liveHTTPheaders addon (www.mozdev.org) and the browser debug mode are invaluable tools;

1.7 is faster than previous versions.

@roj
it is the good work of the mozilla contributors (with apache, samba and many others) that made microsoft change from its "out there in the real world" de facto standards (NTLM) to real RFC standards (SPNEGO). For this example it means that regardless of the OS, browser and web server you can interoperate when using authenticated web apps in the intranet. Not a bad thing surelly.

roj

roj reviewed v1.7 on Jun 18, 2004

This is a mediocre effort that has seen its day (by the developer's own admission else there would not be a Firefox / Thunderbird initiative)for the following reasons:

1) Fat, bloated and slow especially compared to Opera and to a lesser extent IE. Firefox flatlines it for speed but has its own problems not generic to this review.

2) Buggy with memory leaks that do show up when displaying a great deal of data. These memory leaks have persisted for three versions and also show up in Firefox (a common core does have its disadvantages it would seem).

3) Poor confgiration interface obviously designed by a developer / techie with no end-user in mind. Firefox trumps it BADLY in this regard, as do both Opera and IE.

4) Uses the excuse of supporting only so-called "open standards" to mask the fact that it out and out can't deal with the real (as in "out there int he real world") de facto standards that are extremely prevalent on the net (read: Microsoft extensions). This includes Hotmail in the e-mail component).

5) Open Source buys you nothing in this instance. This is an old code base from a bygone era and a now forgotten war that continues to be tweaked while new revamps (albeit raw ones that definitely need to cook a lot more - Firefox) are already well on the way to eclipsing it.

I'm sorry but freedom to choose is only worth it when the alternative has something better to offer. In such a situation I'd choose either Opera or one extenders built around the IE core that add things like tabs to IE.

An "also ran" in my book.

Ameranu

Ameranu reviewed v1.7 on Jun 18, 2004

Just like EdZ said but why olny 3?

Cause by using Opera you are getting the same functions, the same capabilities but LESS memory usage, LESS hd space usage (still 6MB is a bit lower than 30 -.-), and FASTER overall work (if you don't want to belive me, just run Mozilla and Opera on 166Mhz type PC with 16MB Ram etc. or just open a page with loads of pictures and click BACK button, you'll see).

Anyway. Good work. The choice is yours.

EdZ

EdZ reviewed v1.7 on Jun 18, 2004

This is a great browser, and keeps getting better with every release. Here's why it deserves five stars:
1. It's free (and open source).
2. Totally customizable with extensions and user controlled settings (try changing the size of your URL box in IE!).
3. Lots of nice features like popup blocking (for Jave and Flash too) and security controls.
4. It's not integrated into the Windows OS so it doesn't act as another potential gaping security hole.
5. Very stable - it crashes less often than IE 6.
6. Freedom to choose: A lot of people think who controls the web browser market doesn't matter, but if you have to use IE to view a site, you have to be running Windows, and Microsoft likes to build in features to their web services that require IE.

Still a fat, bloated elephant in a tutu with poorly designed configuration menus built by a developer with no end-user in mind. Still no support for Hotmail (I don't accept the high-horse-holier-than-thou anti-MS crap - it's a widespread de facto standard so if you want credibility and a wider audience then support it - period). We need Firefox 0.9 out the door RSN (Real Soon Now) instead of this porker - 0.8 is too buggy for my taste.

Good browser. It works perfectly fine with my Intellipoint mouse's scroll functions, without any plug-ins. My qualms are that Mozilla need a 3rd party extention just to get its tabs working properly and the defaults are crappy. It takes a while to install extentions and configure Mozilla for optimal use. This is a shame and is the reason why Mozilla is like the Linux of web browsers. Even still, I'm too accustomed to Mozilla's vast amount of features to go back to IE, or IE with a ton of 3rd party add-ons, to try and recreate the Mozilla feel.

ssb

Mozilla is really good if you like netscape-like browser suites. In my opinion, it's even better and far more stable than current Firefox betas.
The problem with all Mozilla - Gecko browsers is the slow screen rendering. I've heared users claiming it's faster than IE6 or Opera but that's not true. Rendering is noticable slower even with some tricky hidden options enabled.
Some other minnor issues is lack of intellimouse autoscroll support although it's possible using a third party extension.

Mozzila is now clearly superior to Internet Explorer, if by nothing else, the tabbed surfing alone. Only one gripe about mozilla - Why do the download windows take so long to come up and to minimize? Unfortunately it's a major annoyance and using 'save as...' is usually a dreaded click.

Scorched Earth

Scorched Earth reviewed v1.5 Beta on Aug 28, 2003

This version starts much faster than any of the previous versions. While it's a pity that Mozilla developers can't make it so skins for old versions are compatible with the latest version of their browser, I'm sure skinners will update the best skins when the final version is released. I don't see how skins are relevant in a beta release anyway. Spell Checker sounds like a good addition, although I haven't tried it and would probably have no use for it since I don't use MailNews in Mozilla. I wish their mail client could minimize to the systray, or maybe it could just run in the background (like in Opera) and not take up space on the taskbar. Better implemented tabbed browsing would be great too. Overall, I think Mozilla is good, and in spite of the many annoyances and shortcomings I find, I can't imagine using another browser on a day-to-day basis.

I have been looking for an alternative to Opera since they released that mess known as Opera 7.xx. I found it with Mozilla 1.4, the final edition. The e-mail client is very good . Mozilla also handles Java much better than Opera. Java bombed too much with Opera, especially with the latest JRE 1.4.2.

I only wish I could turn popup windows on and off on the fly like in Opera. Mozilla handles popups in a way that when visiting a site you can turn them on, but they will stay on even if you disable popups while still at that site.

There is a minor bug in the address book: if you enter too many contacts the border between the list of contacts and the contact detail pane shakes. I found a solution by turning off the pane.

One detail that really galled me, as a technical writer, is that the help file is incomplete and downright erroneous in some places.

Still a great browser. And no adware. I look forward to using Mozilla for many years. Goodbye, Opera.

Works perfectly for me. I ran Mozilla as a secondary browser since 0.91, but since 1.1 it has been good enough to be the primary browser. Each release just keeps getting better... more features, faster, and more stable. Since 1.2, I can say that I just haven't seen it crash. Add Googlebar, Optimoz Mouse Gestures, Flash Click-to-View (keep the stupid ads from auto-playing), and Tab Extensions, and the browser does almost everything I could want other than a right-click bookmark editing directly in the bookmark menu. As far as features, the built-in popup management and image blocking make it my choice over IE, and the fact that it renders almost all of the pages that I use accurately (as opposed to Opera, which has more rendering issues) is why it is my favorite browser. If you haven't given it a try, you're missing out.

Opera still doesn't measure up to Mozilla. Stability is noticeably better in Mozilla than with Opera. Heck, I feel Opera 7.11 is worse at stability than IE. Hopefully, Opera will have that corrected soon. As far as full page loading speed goes, Opera 7 and Mozilla 1.4 are about the same, but Mozilla brings up the page in a more sane manner. Sometimes Opera will have the page all over the place until fully downloaded. When I get to a site I know what link I want to go to from there and Mozilla has most of the links ready while Opera is still figgerin' where to put everything. However, Opera is faster than Mozilla at loading Java. Needless to say, most anything beats IE for security.

Woulda been nice if this version had a solution to some RAR files coming up as text. Kinda bothersome to "Save Target As" and it seems like I have to do it more often nowadays.

This Final release better not bring back the internet cache problems I had with 1.3. My slight plugin problems from the last couple-o-builds seem to be resolved.

Looks like Mozilla 1.4 will be my default browser choice for long time to come.

i have been a loyal Netscape user for years now. Recently
i have been using Netscape 7.02 (based on Moz 1.0.2) which was
good and relatively stable compared to most other new netscapes this side of 4.80, which was getting too outdated
in standards compliance.
After using Mozilla 1.4-rc3 for about an hour or two, i doubt i will go back to anything much short of this release.
maybe someday if netscape releases a version based on moz 1.4rc3 or later, then MAYBE i might go back to N7, but for now Mozilla is just too much faster and beefier and more stable.
in the early days, netscape had always been the pioneer of new features, even if not rock solid yet, they would test out new features faster than Mosaic (before ms-ie ever came on the scene) this was ancient history here...; it meant a few more crashes, but the features came out so fast, and the old bugs got fixed so fast, it made it worth it.
netscape since then seems to have lost that cutting edge,
and Mozilla seems to have picked up the ball and ran with it. they now feel like netscape used to 10 years ago.
i think i have just converted myself to Mozilla for the forseeable future :) i like it

I was so used to being able to do that with Netcaptor, that any other browser without that feature felt clunky to use. Now that this feature has been added, this is my new browser of choice. It seems faster than earlier versions, and with the use of the Multizilla add-on, I can put the browser tabs on the bottom where I am used to them being. I'm finally sold on this browser, and this is a prime example of what can be done with open source software. If I could give it more than 5, i would. But, I agree that when Firebird begins to come around, and the kinks get worked out, it could be a very strong contender in the ever evolving browser wars. most people use mozilla, because they think it's updated more often than netscape and besides, mozilla is more or less just the core, without all that crap that netscape packs into the package, without netscape's demands for registration etc. but there are two problems with this way of thinking: first, the whole gecko technology used in mozilla, netscape, galeon etc. is so bad, that no updates will ever help, one would have to re-write the entire code. Proof? look at netscape communicator - always remained crap, no matter how often updated. then the next generation came out (since netscape 6, based on mozilla 0.something) and it became a little better, because many portions of the code were re-written. but it's still slow, inefficient, and when it tries to interpret css or html or js, it reminds me of the foreign salespersons at Mcdonald's, who never understand what you want from them and vice versa. Here no minor updates will help. Second problem is very many programmes install netscape plugins and I know not what else, but they search only for netscape in the registry and on harddisc, if you have mozilla, they won't find it and then you have to install everything by hand if you know how. This pissed me off, when I used to use mozilla on windows and on linux, so I switched to netscape. that apart from the fact that most mozilla versions don't work, they don't even start. well, mozilla is actually a browser for internal testing, I understand that, but why release alphas that function (or rather don't function) as pre-alphas, and betas, that behave like alphas?

This still isn't gonna replace opera for me. It's come a long way since the old milestone builds I use to download, but my main stopper is the bug that I've been waiting for over a year to see fixed. Bug #62907 (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62907) which should have been fixed in 1.2a and it's still here?! Come on guys, don't release 1.3a without fixing some of these "major" bugs!
Once that's fixed though, I'll probably switch to Mozilla for web browsing and e-mail... until then it's just a bulky browser to use whenever opera can't render a page properly.

Very good. tons more features than IE6. the reason IE has so many hole fixes is b/c there are anti-hacking companies that are paid by microsoft to find all the vulnerabilities in IE. yes it may have more holes than mozilla, but i assure you that just b/c mozilla doesnt release vulnerability patches doesnt mean it doesnt have holes. i guarentee that mozilla has had numerous holes that have been fixed in the next version of the browser. MS, instead of releasing IE 6.1 6.2 etc releases hotfixes instead.IE is still faster than mozilla and there are many programs that can enhance IE for the better, like Netcaptor MyIE, etc. mozilla has come a LONG way, but it isnt quite ready for everyday use. for about every 4 hours of use, i find another bug to report to bugzilla. havent tried .1 yet though so this is based on 1.2. great browser but it still needs some work. also, phoenix is a great frontend but it, also, needs a lot of work.

Great Browser. I crossed over from Opera after seeing O7.

New in this version is the type ahead feature. woohoo.

Those who just call this crap and gave it one star, have probably not used it for long (as they didn't have anything else to say). It's WAY more configurable than IE (for instance, deny popups I didn't request)

Not only is it a browser/mail client, but a platform in and of itself. Using Javascript and other W3C technologies, one can build cross platform applications based on Mozilla. I hope this will one day rival Java.

Nice work Mozilla!

pberry, mouseover alt tag tooltips is not a missing feature but rather compatibility with HTML 4.0, and will therefore almost certainly not be added. ALT= is intended to show what is there as a placemarker and information for those people who do not or cannot see the images, not as further information for those who do. The correct tag for a mouseover tooltip would be TITLE= - check for more details.

In other news, Mozilla continues to rock. It would rock even more if my computer had more than 32MB RAM...

I've been using Mozilla as a supplement to IE (50/50) since version 0.96 or so... With 1.0, I completely switched to Mozilla. With 1.1, it's just getting better and better. The performance has improved noticeably from 1.0, the page rendering has improved a bit on those pages that were a little off in 1.0, and the new features are very welcome. The download manager is a huge improvement over the individual download windows, the "add new tab" button makes life a bit easier, and the drag-and-drop now works closer to the way that it should. I still enjoy the built-in anti-popup capability and the "block images from THIS server" for removal of site banners. This version hasn't crashed in the couple of days of heavy use that I've given it. There is even a Google toolbar available for it, developed by someone outside Google. Just search Google for "Mozilla googlebar" and hit the first link. For those who want the Netscape 7.0 spellchecker, you can extract the .xpi from Netscape and install it in Mozilla. Works fine. Give this browser a serious try, and don't forget to turn off the pop-ups and to selectively ignore banner images.

ok, after thinking for a couple of minutes I decided to give the programme 2 stars. that's only because of one useful feature - it circumvents antileech scripts etc. and displays the real location of the file in the download window. the only advantage compared to IE. IE is faster. IE+popup killer is much more comfortable than mozilla. mozilla takes ages to start. it takes ages to load a site, even if you are on dsl. it eats memory like hell, no wonder, after all IE is a system component, and most of the things are loaded anyway, after all IE=windows explorer, while to load mozilla into memory you have to load whole lot of junk. it's a little (very little) faster than netscape, so if you have to use some browser apart from IE, I suggest mozilla, rather than Netscape. still, I never use Mozilla, unless I need to know the real location of a file. enuff said. 2 stars, and I better click the submit button now, before I change my opinion and give just one star

Ok, so the Internet browser is pretty tight. I like it very much for reasons such as it's unique features.

Mozilla Composer, on the other hand, is a piece of junk. I remember back in the day when Netscape Composer actually had features, or at least it seemed that way. Mozilla Composer has absolutely nothing! How do you insert forms and modify their properties without manually entering the tags? I don't see how.

What's worse about Composer is that it absolutely mangles a programmer's code. I decided to edit a JSP page in Composer, and when I saved the page most of my JSP disappeared!!! I noticed that Composer tries to optimize the appearance of code, possibly for HTML standards reasons, but it should not change the effect of a person's code!

Well, I guess it's back to Frontpage for editing. Call me narrow-minded, but I don't something no more complicated than Frontpage, and ten times better than Composer. The rest I do on my own, and I don't like it being undone.

Everyone knows the AOL email client stinks. I have long sought a way to use standard email clients (Outlook, Eldora, Outlook Express, etc) but AOL's proprietary non-POP mail format makes that impossible.

I finally found a program called eNetBot which worked for about a year. Unfortunately, AOL made some changes and the eNetBot author has tried for almost three months, but just can't seem to fix the problems.

Enter AOL2Pop. Although beta, at least for me this thing works flawlessly. It has an XP style interface which is way cool to look at. More to the point, the program quietly and unobtrusively does exactly what it is supposed to -- lets me download and read AOL mail with my POP3 email client.

It also supports "return receipts" whereby you get an email as soon as the AOL recipient opens the message.

The whole program is just very slick. Also the author is lightening quick with responses to questions or suggestions.

Security seems OK too. I blocked all traffic except to AOL and the program worked just fine. Nothing is being sent anywhere other than to AOL.

This things a winner.

A good translator that you can configure that not translates what we specify, of those that each page is to simply tell him what we want to make, to configure it of English for the language that is usually used with a simple button. For when a browser that closes the annoying windows, because the Mozilla doesn't exist any good program that he/she helps us with that. A browser with a configuration to pick up the news of the newspapers that we want, as the Monoon. Is it so difficult to see that that in fact precise people to get a comfortable sailing? Because we have to get complicated the life with supplements of programs that the only thing that you/they make is to be filled the registration. I give maximum note because they deserve it and to have taken out something that really voucher the pain to discharge it and to use it, starting from now it will be my favorite navigator, simply to expect the changes that I believe that they are necessary.

The problem with the mozilla development is that it focuses on a lot of "features" and "compatibility" without making sure the GUI is up-to-snuff. Even though it's final, there are quite a few little annoyances that keep me from using it full-time. Stuff like you can't click the middle mouse button then quickly scroll by moving the cursor up or down. Stuff like not being able to sort the personal bookmark folders unless you set sorting to disabled and do it manually (that took a bit to figure out as the sorting value in the bookmark manager has no effect on the personal toolbar unless sorting is in disabled mode). So yes, it's final, but no, it's not polished. Still give it 5 points since it does work as a browser. However, it's the little things that prevent people from using software, I'd wish the mozilla programers would realise this and put more attention into polishing the GUI. Here's hoping for version 1.01.

No surprises here. It works very well, and has become my primary browser, after a few years of IE. It seems to render DHTML fine, however, I was just on a site where the pictures they'd inserted into the page were 'under' the horizontal bars, and 'over' some text. Not sure of why, unless they used absolute position layers without thinking of different resolutions.

woodengod

Yes, it still has bugs (try to move bookmarks around directly on the toolbar or the bookmark menu; or someetimes it starts with an empty sidebar). If it was me, I would delay the party until such apparent bugs are solved.
But I still consider it the best browser, considering the variety of the platforms it supports, the quality of the rendering and the speed.

Excellent... the quality has improved substantially since the .9x series went into 1.0 RCx stage. I haven't had a browser crash since the mid .9x versions, which I cannot say of MSIE 6.0 where I usually get a crash or two each week. I'm using the two browsers equally, and Mozilla's tabbed interface, better security, popup reduction, cookie management, download management, and per-server image rejection have all won me over. This RC3 release, although I've only installed it today and used it for just a few hours, seems possibly ready for release as 1.0 assuming no significant bugs that I haven't encountered surface. This opinion does not encompass the mail, news, or IRC client portions of the download... I have never installed those. I'm rather tightly stuck with MS Outlook because it appears to be the only e-mail & contact management software that will integrate with my Compaq IPAQ PocketPC 2002 device. For that, a hard boot-to-the-head for Microsoft.

There is something about Mozilla that i cant really explain it just doesnt feel finished, i am sure i will still feel the same even when version 1 is officially released. does anyone else understand what i mean by my very strange comment? The browser is getting better, and just as good as IE6 now. I just wish there was the option of downloading just the browser, i dont install the IRC client and mail etc so i wish i didnt have to download them also. They need to make a few releases like WinAMP has with Lite versions etc, perhaps even some sort of SmartDownloader type program however i am not too keen on these.

I'd given up, but decided to try it one more time out of boredom. Heh. Pages load really fast, and I haven't seen any display inconsistancies between IE6 and this. I develop sites primarily for IE, and now I don't have to worry about making separate pages for Moz/Net.
I give it a 5 out of 5 for finally making it. ;)

I've been using IE as my primary browser for quite a few years now. Mozilla and NS6 always interested me because they were so much better at rendering web pages correctly (leaving aside the issue of incorrectly coded web pages for a moment) than IE, but their usability problems kept me from ever seriously considering a switch. Mozilla 1.0 RC2 doesn't disappoint. The user-interface problems are gone, it's fast, and it renders pages just as well as always. I'll probably finally switch when the final version (or Netscape branded version) comes out. I've definitely seen some web pages that don't look good in Mozilla, but so far, 100% of the time, it's a bug in the web page, so I figure the site operator will get around to fixing it eventually.

ditoa: I just love the built-in ability to disable pop-up ads (ads, not useful things that use the onload() function), annoying status scrollers, pop-unders, etc... I also love the cookie manager which shows me exactly what cookies are set, what site set them, what the data in them are, and if I want to keep them and/or block all cookies from that site. I also love being able to block images from servers I choose (i.e. ads.doubleclick.net). The e-mail client is very nice. It supports everything MSOE supports and then some. I can't say I'd use the composer over Dreamweaver or Chatzilla over mIRC though.

"IE6 supports alot of extras which i love to use in HTML but Mozilla and Opera etc wont display, such as layered menu, like the Microsoft.com site have."

There are standard DHTML and JavaScript implimentations of a layered menus which are cross-compatible. Also as a web developer myself I love Mozilla's full support for the new advanced PNG image format. Internet Explorer on Windows doesn't even support the alpha-transparency. And we're talking about a standard here, not some propriotary thing. (Internet Explorer on the Mac supports the PNG fully, even more then Mozilla (gama) since IE4.0 for the Mac, but not on Windows strangly enough)

Tux0Racer: this is very true, with RC1 i tried signing IN to Hotmail, after a screen trying to get me to download IE6 hotmail worked fine, although it didnt look as nice as with IE6. However when i tried to SIGNUP for hotmail i couldnt complete the process. It isnt exactly a nice thing to do but it is there service and they can restrict who can use it as they please. Personally i think it is kind of stupid as they will lose users but i dont work there so i cant voice my opinion to a degree in which it will make any difference!

now RC2, it fixes some bugs and is a little more stable, however my comments for RC1 still stand. It is good competition but i still prefer Opera and IE6. I will never use the mail/news client or the composer and IRC clients so they are a waste (i know it is optional install, but not download, yet!). Opera, the bat!/outlook 2002, Dreamweaver and mIRC are my default clients and will continue to be, i know they cost money but not everything open source is the best (not starting a flame war with that comment!)

I think it is funny that a few months ago the netscape.com website detected which browser you had and sent you to a easier to use, faster and nicer looking/designed site than if you used a Netscape browser. Mozilla is a good browser, they have sorted alot of problems but i dont think it is any better than IE6 or Opera etc it is just competition and with competition companies grow and make better products to out do the competition. and as for IE6 being a rip off of Mozilla that isnt exactly true as Mozilla is open source and anyone can edit it and make it their own version, Linux is only free because Linus T got the UNIX kernal and made it open source otherwise you would be paying alot more than what Windows costs to run a *NIX desktop today! just look at the prices of a SPARC system etc.

To those people who think Moz takes a long time to load - have you ever actually noticed that IE and Windows Explorer are the same thing? I other words, it loads with the OS.

Some other people who bash Mozilla really need to check their facts as well. There is NO Netscape 4.x code in Mozilla - so it IS A NEW 4 YEAR DEVELOPMENT. IE, like most Microsoft products, is a rip-off of someone elses...

Mozilla is THE most standards complient browser yet, with a great interface and stability. Yes, it does still have some bugs, but at least Mozilla admit them and work to fix them.

Must better product than any other version of Netscape ( or its variants) IMHO. Seems to handle user profiles like it should in Windows and renders pages nicely.

nsreg.dat still gets put in the windows folder *sigh* though users only need read access to it.

Mozilla has a rather large memory footprint, 16-23mb in the quicklaunch state (in taskbar, no page loaded).

I experienced problems with plugins. with one plugin, the browser crashed. With shockwave the browser still reports i need the plugin even after its installed.

If you're anti-MS, a must d/l, if not I see no compeling reason to switch from IE.

I come in here to see if it's worth my while to download a product, not to get opinions about the company making the program! Listen, I don't care if MS makes it or JoeBillyBob's software from Podunk, Okalahoma... Just post whether or not it worked and the pros/cons of the product. You can mention that other programs could be an OPTION, that's helpful. But stop with the testimonials. Everyone has good/bad experiences with everything, don't transfer your bias onto your reviews.

Since this spot is for reviews, I'll give mine now. The program is solid. I've used IE6 for quite a while. I had issues with older versions of Mozilla not opening pages, they seem to be caught up in that department (for the most part).

I use popup killer (free) so the annoying popups have been kept to a minimum. BUT, adding into the browser is a great added feature.

Try it.

A great milestone so far. It's faster and more stable than before. It still uses more resources on average than IE, but only about 10MB more so it's not that big of an issue, especially with 512MB of RAM.

The new FavIcon abilities are great, and the Javascript Prefs. panel is even better. No more lame javascript popup windows or status bar text covering up link url's!

The tabbed browsing feature has matured nicely and is quickly becoming an irreplacable feature in my web browsing habbits.

One of my few gripes is still the lack of Auto-scroll, a much needed feature for all those really long webpages that you want to read. Unfortunately it looks like this won't go in until atleast Mozilla 1.0.1.

If it wasn't for the lack of Auto-scroll(a must for me since I use a graphics tablet for a pointing device) my IE icon's new home would be in the Recycle Bin right now.

It does have potential, but IE browses significantly faster. Where it truely shines is in it's stability and security - not speed. I installed it primarily to be a back up browser, in case something ever happened to IE or if some program crashes it some day.

I will only review this new version with a 3 stars becoz I am now using NetCaport for severall months and it definitly rox. In fact, I found NetCaptor the best web browser, and even if it using IE engine, it is really better than IE.
Of course, you have to pay to use it.

I don't care if it's "beta." That's an excuse for it to crash, and not to blame the developers.
It does have a relatively fast load With the tray icon but still eats tons of ram and is much slower than IE 5.5.
Anyways I like IE 6.0 even better yet, much cleaner and much faster overall.

Nice addons are the turbo option and the possibility to stop pop-ups :))

I can't wait till Moz is finished, it's been a great browser since 9.2 and I use it over IE for the first time. I'm not sure what the reviewers below were doing but the wheel works fine on my computer and there arn't any gliches. As to the memory, the only reason IE appears to take less is because MS basically built IE into Windows. Another great feature with the new moz is that it has a turbo load feature that runs at startup and puts it into memory off the bat (~~10mb) so that moz can start as fast or faster than IE.

If your really having trouble with memory, pick some up, very cheap now, vendors get them for about $3/128mb, retail price is usually $30 or $40

It still has a lot of user interface bugs (such as when you are selecting text in the address bar), but it is shaping up to be a fairly decent app.

Still takes 32mb of RAM on my system... that'sj ust outragous, IE6 takes 10mb.

IE is excellent for layers, there isnt a better Web Browser (WB), Opera is excellent for Speed (i dont like the email or news reader programs), i used to like Netscape for an all in one browser, i realy like the email and news reader clients and the web page composer was nice for doing a little page here and there :) but now Mozilla is better that Netscape 6 (i still use 4.x as it is very nice :)

if you like IE and OE stay with them but if you like testing different programs i would suggust this, i like it :)

The Browser portion of Mozilla is very good IMO, the only thing that I can think that is really missing is support for the wheel button.

The Mail and News portion still needs a lot of work however but i'm going to assume they fix those problems by the time 1.0 is done.

It's okay - I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but I'll give it a four now because there is some time to spiffy it up. But the interface does need some work...I have a fairly new system and if it takes as long as it does to load for me I imagine what the folks on older machines are going through. But the engine is solid and the whole thing looks quite promising. Hope it gets cleaned up by 1.0 - I too have doubts about this universal interface thing.

Surge

Surge reviewed v0.9.2 on Jun 30, 2001

I usually download nightly builds on a weekly basis now and I may say that guys created wonderful browser engine. I would repeat, engine is absolutely fantastic, BUT I think Mozilla's team biggest mistake was to create GUI in XUL and not in platform dependent environments, like GTK for Linux and MFC under Windows. Take look at how long it takes to load K-Meleon. It loads as fast as IE, but it is buggy as hell and not stable. I believe, that the next reasonable step for Mozilla's developers will be to create interface in platform dependent environments with full functionality, because I don't think K-Meleon will ever gain any popularity among "average" users. Hopefully, NetCaptor's developers will continue their stopped project of using Gecko as their second engine (I would use it for sure and not MSIE, since it is obviously faster rendering engine [even on my old P3-450]). As a webdeveloper, I'm completely satisfied with the way Mozilla complies with standards and how it renders pages designed for IE (though some JavaScript stuff still requires double development).

So, PLEASE, PLEASE stop this skinny XUL stuff for future now use MFC, GTK, QT or whatever... What's more I think that VC6 is not the best compiler they selected. In my opinion, Borland's C++Builder 5 is a better compiler producing FASTER programs.

This was the biggest disappointment. Other than being bug-ridden (the most obvious being that my address bar is halfway under the links bar), this monster is sucking up 25MB of RAM just to display a single page! The behemoth of IE 5.5 is taking only 10MB to display the same URL. Also, the response is so slow that the menus have this weird ghost effect because they aren't redrawn fast enough. On the plus side, the CSS support is very nice, but I'll be uninstalling Mozilla immediately. I won't waste the resources that this thing eats up.

I've been plagued by few of the bugs that others have claimed to experience with this version. It's entirely amazing how much this version is improved from the last in speed and stability. This is the first version of Mozilla I've been able to replace IE 5.5 with.

It makes me wonder if it's more than coincidence that this great product would be released right after AOL's contract with Microsoft ran out.

mrbee

mrbee reviewed v0.9.1 Beta on Jun 9, 2001

This summer, two virtually identical browsers will be released: Netscape 6.5, & Mozilla 1.0

Netscape 6.5 will basically be Netscape's branding of Mozilla 1.0 - with their logos, extra ad-buttons and third party tie-ins added on. You can get Netscape's bloated version of the sleek Mozilla original. Yes, this may be the death of Netscape but the birth of something better.

0.9.1 is very nice. An improvement on 0.9, but still not a final release. To those of you who say "BUGS!" yes, tell of them here and describe them in detail to Mozilla so they may be fixed, but don't act stupid about it: this is a pre-release beta, remember. Of course it has bugs, thats the reason for the extra menu items in these milestone releases.

I just hope the final version sucks less resuorces and loads quicker.

I have only been using Mozilla since .9 so I am pretty new to Mozilla. So far I have been pretty impressed with .9.1. A few minor bugs have popped up in some recently builds though. On a couple pages borders that worked on .9 are now absent in .9.1. I have also had some issues with the bookmarks as well. I haven't tried the turbo mode yet but without it mozilla takes about 10 seconds to startup on my athlon 700.

On the good side however, memory usage seems to be pretty getting to be pretty competitive with internet explorer. On startup Mozilla is only using about 14mb on my machine. Most pages seem to render well but their are a few exceptions but they seem to be pretty rare which is pretty impressive considering how many web pages seemed to be built assuming that end users would only use IE.

All in All I say it is good enough to call beta but there are still a lot of minor bugs and missing features that need to be finished before 1.0. Once some of the minor quirks are fixed I think mozilla will finaly be ready for large scale use.

This build is simply beautiful. It fixes the major gripes I had previously: It loads pages twice as fast as the previous build (which was very noticably slow); but more importantly for those of you who use Windows - you can finally run it with the -turbo command line, which makes it stay in memory and launch instantly (just like IE).
So now you have less excuses to complain, give it another try :) Although it's only a 0.0.1 difference in version numbers, don't let that fool you - it's a VAST improvement over 0.9.0.

drxym

drxym reviewed v0.9.1 Beta on Jun 8, 2001

Simply put, this is a very, very good browser. While it still feels beta quality in some areas, it is pretty much feature complete, stable and fast. Mail/news is great too though I still miss some features of NS4.x such as being able to search the newsgroup list

As a beta there is still room for improvement. Memory consumption is still high, startup is too slow (except in turbo mode) and there is some very slow memory leakage.

All in all a very positive sign of the shape of things to come! Netscape 6.x can't be far off now.

Mozilla is usable; actually it's quite good. It's also quite important.

Why is it important? Well first off it meets most standards, better then most of the other browsers out there (well, IE for the Mac comes close.) If you're a web-developer this is a great thing, finally able to reuse lots of code.

Next it's cross-platform - widely so. Already running on most OS's out there it brings a nearly-universal flavor of browser-goodness. If you're in a place with a variety of OS's it'll be nice to have a full-featured browser that works across all of them.

Finally it's components & extandable. Need an HTML renderer for your latest project? Pop in Mozilla's. Want to add a protocol? Not a problem. Expect to see bit & pieces of Mozilla turning up in lots of projects, everywhere from car displays to file-sharing programs.

Yeah it's not as integrated into Windows as IE is (heck, IE is now part of Windows.) However you can now set it to autostart with Windows (folks pointing out that Mozilla takes longer to load then IE - you do realize that IE is *already* loaded, it loads when Windows starts?) which makes it seem faster. It's also getting much more stable. Not perfectly stable (then neither is IE) but it's getting there.

Frankly for the last release or so Mozilla has been a viable alternative to IE on Windows. If you're doing a lot of web-activity it's worthwhile to install and check out how some of your favorite sites (or your own) render differently. Expect as Mozilla matures a bit in the next few months for Mozilla to begin to compete with IE for being your favorite browser, lots of folks really like it already and it's becoming quite slick.

By the way - there's a difference between the milestone releases & the nightly builds (nightly's are more recent though they may have different bugs.)

Also remember that almost everything is tweakable - if you don't like a look or the way something works it's almost always fixable, usually quite easily.

First of all, my Windows 2000 system is 100 % stable. I ran this bas**** for a couple of minutes, and it performed an illegal operation. This has also been the case with every Mozilla milestone I've ever used on the Windows platform.
It takes four seconds to start, compared to one second for IE 5.01. It also takes up 17 Megabytes of memory!Geez. Can you say bloatware? However, they've fixed some of the deadly annoying interface bugs from the last milestone, and that's good, but these bugs should have been cleared out several milestones ago.
I like open source and I like the idea behind Mozilla, but it's got a long way to go before it can be compared to Internet Explorer.

Better than PR3 on my modest machine (48 meg ram). Footprint appears to be a little smaller, so less grinding of hard drive because of excessive use of virtual memory, compared to PR3. However there appears to be a significant memory leak still. I have to reclaim memory after about 10 mins as the program gradually eats up more and more ram. Then it crashes after 30 mins always. However this is time when team is working on performance, and it is paying off judging by comparison with PR3 from 2 weeks before. Once loaded (still takes two minutes or more), program works well when it workd. Web pages appear very quickly. Hard to compare it with IE5.5, as the latter program has such smaller footprint, and is comparably much less buggy, which is what anyone would expect. But I like M18. Reads web pages well, and promises a lot. E-mail component very impressive e.g. multiple e-mail accounts are handled well.
I have been using M18 with Java plugin 1.3 and that works well too. Latest progress report on Moziall site say the aim is to have the program working well on 32 meg machines. They are cutting out now a lot of excessive code. They appear to be getting there. Maybe pretty exciting if they continue to cut and cut for a month more....I look forward to Netscape 6 being a real alternative to IE5.5., which really does take over a lot more of the computer than memory! To be able to remove IE5.5 and Outlook and all the secret clutter that go with them and running an efficient Netscape 6 would be really interesting.

Another "milestone" - or should that be "millstone"? - in what seems to be a project that will never end. I mean, is this browser EVER going to be finished? At this point I doubt it. The concept was a noble one, but time has proven that Open Source just makes for a muddied, bloated end product. As others have mentioned in their reviews, this browser doesn't render half of the web correctly... it's starting to bloat up to IE/Netscape proportions... and it's got a damn ugly interface as well. Oh, and please don't tell me I can "skin" it! I'm trying to AVOID bloat, not bog down my system by keeping 2 megs of bitmap overlays in memory constantly. The *default* GUI should have been designed correctly in the first place. Mozilla is garbage.

HERE WE GO AGAIN....Mozilla started off small and fast, and after adding many bells and whistles to each successive milestone, it is starting to bloat in the tradition of IE and Netscape. I was hoping for something light and swift like Opera, but without the quirks. I was hoping for a pretty interface like IE, but without the massive bloat. Why did Mozilla put an E-MAIL client in a BROWSER? Don't they know there are dozens of great e-mail programs available? Some are even free! Why bloat up for a silly e-mail program? And that side bar...notice the links? I get a feeling they're trying to spam me into submission. Believe me, I turned it off first thing. The links bar doesn't work, at least not with drag-and-drop. After all, I guess it's not bad. It does render and go "back" fast, but when history and Web content cache builds up, I suppose it will slow down. I second the previous poster's comments. They were spot on.

It's said "some like the daughter, some the mother" - and here I actually prefer the daughter to the old Netscape mother (but how can one write above that Mozilla is a "cousin" of Netscape when it's built on the mother source and then developed like any child should in the end - freely on it's own, eh?) M.16 is so far very stable to be a beta. Most important for my evaluation is that the open source development are far more promising than Mozilla's step father (and Netscape's second husband) - AOL. As a beta of a important project - M.16 get 5 star rating. For being a own development and not a parasite (there is an important difference between parasites and children!), it get a 5 star. For having an important future outside MS, it get another 5 star - in short, quite a strong 5 star rating while not forgetting it's still a beta. For the IE fanatics, go ahead and use it - I use it as well sometimes ((-: Same with Windows OS, use that one as well as the other OS in my main PC. We are moving away from the time where we had to choose only one solution or OS, we have today multi choices. Mozilla have the potential to become an important part of this reality - great work guys!

This update resolves the "ResetBrowser Frame" and "HostAnnouncement Flooding" security vulnerabilities in Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0. They should put one of the newer skins to replace that god-aweful interface they currently user.

As for the program itself. Paragraph alignment works great finally. There are still bugs with javascript, the ad-code on my site was very weird. Something to do with the "SCRIPT" "NOSCRIPT" tag.

Also, trying to load anandtech GPFed the browser, I guess it wasn't handling the massive amount of tables used by that site very well.

There are also issues with removing underlined links, it doesn't support it the same way IE and NS 4.7 support it, so either the CSS code might still be a bit off. Makes certain pages appear weird.

Once they fix the instability issues, and more skins become available, it should be a really nice alternative to IE. While it may not load pages as fast, it does display the page structure faster than IE 5.0, which in my view is what counts for speed.

Very good, especially for a beta release. Note to everyone whining about it loading slower than IE5: no it doesn't. If it's doing this it's because IE5 loads on bootup so Windows is just opening another copy of it from memory, which is much faster. (It looks like it loads quickly, but it just slows down your bootup!) If you have a computer where IE5 loads after bootup then you'll see that its startup time is about the same as Mozilla's and in fact not much better than Netscape 4.x. And if you don't like the interface (the other common complaint) then that's what skins are for.

Why are some of you complaining. This is an open source in progress. I've been using Mozilla Build 2000040610, and it runs faster than Netscape 6 or IE5. There are many glitches, but it's still great. Also, the reason it takes so long to load is that it's not running in the memory all the time like IE. If you didn't like M14, try Netscape 6, which has some improvements. Just wait- it'll improve. Note: Netscape didn't work on Mozilla M14.

Oh Dear, what a Novice effort that AOL/Netscape have done. This new prebeta browser is nothing but Netscape 4.7 with a different interface and 64,500 bugs. I think we need to see a new face in the browser market, Microsoft simply doesn't need to hurry with IE 6. The current AOL/Netscape effort is totally a failure. And it took them 3 years to get to this stage? I can whip up a simple browser that works much more reliably in VB6, in say 45 minutes. :-D

Downloaded Seamonkey. Tried to download my personal webpage to see what it looks like in this browser. 3 minutes later, it was still not up. Minimized Seamonkey. Opened IE 5.0. Downloaded my webpage. It came immediately. Went back to Seamonkey. Still no webpage. Seamonkey is slow, slow, slow.

Decided to delete Seamonkey. Went to control panel (I'm running NT 4.0), Seamonkey wasn't listed amoung the group of programs that could be deleted.

Went to start menu to see if a delete option was there. It was not! Went to Seamonkey "Help". No option listed there, either.

Evidently the only way to delete this gawdawful program is to delete each file individually. My register will love me for that, and I'm sure I'll probably miss a few files.

Boy, what a mistake downloading this one!!!

Getting a little better, which is what a milestone is for. Frankly though, I don't see this browser being appropriate for web surfing for a long time. To all you little anti-anything-I-Dont-Understand monkeys who think you're a little rebel: IE 5 is now the most used web browser in the world. Theres a reason for that. Bear in mind that just because something is free and open source, it doesnt automatically make it superior. Get a grip.

Mozilla is starting to make me feel good aboot, the future of netscape. It is nice to see the install file take up so little room, especially since it contains a browser and mail/news reader. 5 MB in stead if 18 is verrrrrryyyyyyy nice for those of us who rely on a dial-up connection to download. It is still unstable though, I attempted to download a small .pdf file and it propmtly crashed :P. I will totally be looking forward to a more stable Beta version in the coming months. Way to go MO!

It's getting better, nice to see that it finally is a real application and dropping the console window. Unfortunately, the Table and CSS rendering in M14 doesn't work as well as it did in M13, and I get table rendering errors on just about every website I visit.

I would much prefer to use Netscape over IE (or any MS product) anyday, however I have found IE much quicker and better supported. Mozilla is an excellent step in the right direction and even though this is still pre-beta, I like what i see...

hey, check out my post for Mozilla for Linux. Basically wondering where all the anti MS and Windows people are (they usually hate IE too, hehe). Since Linux seems so popular, how come I'm the only one who gave a post under there, lol.

Actually to me it looks promising for once in netscapes lifetime it actually opens fast..I dont have to stare at the splash screen for eternity now!!! Also the interface is looking promising...You guys have to concider something since netscape employees have been cut to about 1/8th of what it use to have when aol took over the company. Also these are milestones meaning they arent even in beta stages yet. Microsoft doesnt even release there milestone (nightly builds) to the public at all. I tested IE 4 Beta build 1 and it was horrible let me tell you!! When you moved the mouse over an image the image would dissapear and then the image would stick to the mouse and if you moved the mouse out of the browser window windows crashed..This was the first beta 1 that they put with there first beta version of windows 98 and it was horrible..But I in no way like netscape but I dont think it deserves all this flaming for not giving up. At least there trying and as for opera? You gotta be kidding .. Opera is the biggest piece of sh*t software in the world..Its so lame its pathedic.

It's better than it was, but still **way** far away from IE5. They're really losing ground fast, and fighting an uphill battle. It's a decent browser for Linux, better than Netscape 4.x IMHO, but for Windows, IE5 has everything I'd ever want.

Wow! A great browser...for 1987. Come on Netscape, if you can't even put on a face that you are trying, just go ahead and die quietly.

Internet Explorer 5.x and the newer 6.0PPVs are very much better.

Last browser I saw that was this bad was on my Cell Phone.

CSS rendering is worse than the previous release. Even though it is milestone 14, the HTTP header is m13. 13 must be their lucky number, ha! I hate Netscape's rendering garbage. Why don't these people work for MS and improve IE, making money whilst doing so?

Y'know, if someone wrote an IRC client to look and perform like AmIRC on the Amiga, then mIRC would be threatened.

AmIRC is the best looking IRC client Ive ever laid my eyes on. mIRC cant touch it.

Nice to know people are still trying though.

Everyone said it will be THE browser. But I'm testing it since Milestone 10 and it's getting even worse. It just sucks. I'll stop that now because you can't enjoy surfing with this bad software. I wonder if the betas or even the final will be good if the alphas are so bad. I'm deeply disappointed. IE still rules and that won't change so fast.

i really liked it for my old P133 it ran really fast, web pages run very well on it too, hope they can ge this into beta soon cause MS has a really good lead on they,as long as they don;t fill this up with AD's and "junk" IE5 has they can have a real winner her.

I really like the the "New Browser". The problems I found are, some websites look different than Netscape 4.x and Explorer 4/5.x displayes them. So that means website designers have to start optimizing for three browsers. I don't know if I really like that. Overall ...MICROSOFT WATCH OUT. :)

I'll give Mozilla my support once they get out of Beta and into the RTM business. :P M13 is nicer than other Milestones, sure, but it STILL doesn't cut it... "Blah blah keep in mind it's Alpha software, blah blah" Who cares? I won't use an alpha software when something already made does the job and isn't alpha. :P

WOAH BABY!!! The speed at which pages are rendered is fantastic!!! I have both IE 4.1 and Netscape 4.7 here at work, and Milestone 12 blows them both away!!!! Of course STARTUP speed is slower than IE...but who cares about that!??! I want pages to come up in a blink, and Milestone 12 does...eat your heart out IE:)

Those of you giving Mozilla a thumbs-down review, please remember this: Mozilla is not even beta yet! It's not even alpha! It is still in development stages, and it is not meant to be used on a regular basis! It is for testing! If you have a problem with this, please talk to whoever posted the article about it.

I've been using the nightly builds for the past year and can honestly say that I like it. Given the opportunity to review the source code is an added bonus because I can see the care and thought that is put into the product. Very nicely done. Microsoft better watch out. 'Gecko' is becoming a fast browser. (Yeay! More browser wars :))
