Can't recommend it. Don't use it myself, but as someone who fixes PCs, I have several clients who do/did. In every single case, this software and service failed to perform as advertised.

Here's two failures:

Someone with a dying HDD (spewing SMART errors, windows not booting). After fixing the PC for this guy, he tried to use Mozy to restore his data. It only restored a few hundred MB of files, and all were outdated. Most of his photos were missing. I tried it again for him, thinking he may have done something wrong, but I got the same results. We contacted support, which was useless (automated mails, the reps were nearly useless when we did get a real person) I ended up imaging his old dying drive and getting most of his files out of the image, although he still lost some things.

Another time, I had someone that tried to use Mozy to restore their data after getting hit by some form of cryptolocker knockoff. I removed the malware and tossed the corrupt data. Mozy then restored exactly NOTHING. No backups were ever made apparently, despite it claiming to be backing up weekly. He had only been using the service for a few months. Ended up using his old physical backups on DVD-Rs, which were missing the months since he switched to Mozy's garbage. Support was once again useless trying to explain why the backups weren't there, but did refund him after a lot of arguing. I recommended an external HDD which has worked fine for him since.

NOT RECOMMENDED. Before you purchase Mozy, you need to be certain to read their TERMS (http://mozy.com/terms) regarding the reliability and use of their software. If the backups are not performed as scheduled with Mozy, they will continue to charge you for their software and storage fees and they WILL NOT take responsibility for lack of performance or make refunds if your backups are not performed. That's the point of having the software, so something users should definitely be aware of.

The service the first year was "OK", but still couldn't tell what was being backed up and the software had to be re-installed a few times. At least I had one incident of phone support. The next year Mozy automatically signed me up, so they don't exactly remind you of the expiration date and just charge your card.
The second year was a horror story. After charging me the entire next year up front, Mozy then changed all of its software to something that I couldn't figure out. It was never backing up anything. I must have sent numerous requests for support help, but only got back automated emails, half of which when I responded back had already been marked as "case closed out."
On top of that, I couldn't get the Mozy site to change my email because the page never worked. I had started using an external HD to back up files when I knew I had to have a new OS installed. Worst luck was that it turned out to be defective, but I THOUGHT Mozy might have backed up something. Hah. After downloaded their Restore Manager and downloading files for about a day and a half, all I ended up with was pure gibberish. I didn't even recognize the photos or data files, which seemed to belong to someone else! Unbelievable.
Not trusting my ability, I took my laptop to the local Mac repair center and not one of the competent techs there could find anything from Mozy that had to do with user files. I was furious.
Did Mozy ever respond to my complaints? I got one email from some rep who claimed I had been entitled to phone support. NOT. My second year account stated I had to pay more to "upgrade" just to get that, and Mozy emails claimed I couldn't have that.
What a screwed up service. For all I know, the file downloads I ended up with are hackers in China. Have no idea where my data is. Mozy only knows how to charge your credit card and then not deliver. I'd select ZERO in the rating but it doesn't exist.

Complete Failure. I've used Mozy for over a year as a backup service. You never know if these things are working correctly until your hard drive crashes. That day came last month and as others have posted, my Mozy backup was 80% garbage, which ultimately makes it 100% trash. Don't risk it, it's not worth it. I went out and bought an external drive so that I know my files are being backed up. I have no personal issues with Mozy, but their service for me was a complete FAILURE.

BEWARE of the Mozy program!!! I just purchased a new computer and wanted to restore all the files from my old computer onto this new one through Mozy, which it says is so easy to do. Well, most of my files were missing, only restored 600 out of over 6,000 photos!?! After a half hour wait online to speak to a rep.(you can't reach them over the phone unless you have pro), he agreed that there must have been some sort of internet connectivity issue during the backups (never admitted that it could have been a Mozy program error. As I was told by the program every week that the backup was successful. Thankfully my files weren't lost due to a destroyed computer, I was still able to retrieve them from my old computer, but I hope someone else learns from the amount of time I wasted trying to restore files and then the LONG wait for customer service. They did refund my remaining balance. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Mozy is impossible to contact, delibrate i'm sure. A take your money and run kind of company. The upload took 3 weeks and still hasn't completed. It would have been so nice just to send a simple email and promptly get a reply but oh no
Mozy doesn't work that way. I could write forever on how bad the customer support is lets just say imagine the worst and treble it. Problem is it all looks good on the outside, the sales pitch bit but once you've signed up it sucks! I wouldn't even give them one star if i didn't have to. Have since discovered Carbonite has a much better customer support.

Mozy online backup stinks all around.

The software stinks - it is not intuitive, and is very difficult to use, and on my machine it did not even work. Also, it fills up you hard drive with temp files - this is completely unnecessary, and there are other backup services that do not do this.

Technical support stinks - they could not resolve my problem and after 45 minutes, I gave up, and then they LIED to me saying they would cancel my account.

Customer support also stinks, as I wanted a refund and cancellation, neither of which I got from Mozy, even after contacting them 8 times in 3 different ways. I even contacted the Better Business Bereau, and they still did not cancel my account. I finally resorted to doing a charge back on my credit card to get my money back and to stop Mozy from billing me every month.

Then I tried Carbonite, and all is well. I am sure there are some other good backup services, buy Mozy totally stinks!

DO NOT, I repeat do not, subscribe to Mozy.com unless you are prepared to be sorely dissapointed , angry, and be ready to pull your hair out. I signed up for this service and Mozy backed up only partial data intially and did not back up months of my most recent data. I lost eveything past the partial initial data when my hard drive crashed. I expected to be fully backed up when my hard drive crashed. In addition, the info that it did store took forever to download. It is very complicated and not user friendly at all. I had to hire IT people to deal with it. In my opinion this is a turtle trying to be a jaguar. It's a total rip off, and I intend to take legal action against this service due to the financial loss incurred from the failure to do what it was supposed to do. Anyone out there like me please contact me or post for a potential class action lawsuit. Find a more reliable system. Mozy is not the one!

I pride myself on researching just about every item that I care to purchase. That's why I'm leaving this review. I tried Mozy and to say the least, was disappointed. I couldn't get over the fact that each backup required backing up everything all over again. It took something like 72 hrs. each time. Not only that, the backup would freeze at hour 59, or something horrifying like that. When asked, their customer service guys had no response..."that's the way it is" actually was their response.
Avoid this one at all costs.
Additionally, there is no way to cancel your subscription from their website..unreal! Check it out for yourself if you can't believe it.
I sent a cancel email to the listed support address and never heard back..what a surprise!

We worked with Mozy for a long time and the backup part of the server is fine other than it is way too slow. The restore is the problem.

The $10 a year Rsync account storage over at
Online Storage Solution seems to work better and is cheaper than mozy.

Mozy is great backup solution! Just don't try the RESTORE!!!!

Backups: Fast enough, easy, configurable, cheap.

1 x failed hard disk.

RESTORE: try to log in with SAME credentials - you would expect all your data to be there right? NOT. 5 days between email support replies, they give you 2 options to get your data back - none of which surfaced my old data.

So bottomline: Backup all you want, just don't try & restore.

Moving elsewhere.

Mozy itself is great(I pay about $10/month) until you need technical support. My mozy backup stopped working a few weeks ago, and Mozy's tech support is very very very slow. Basically the tech support is only by email, with about 3 days between replies. So right now, three weeks have passed, and I'm still waiting for tech support's latest email.

I’ve been using Mozy for about 6 months and I now officially HATE it. I had to do a PC Restore on my machine due to some windows problems, so I figured I would be fine because all my files are backed up on Mozy. So I’m done with the restore (to factory settings) and I’m ready to get my files from Mozy. Only when I go to their website to do a Web Restore, I get this error message EVERY SINGLE TIME:
—————————————–
There was an error while restoring.

There was an error processing your restore request. Please try again later.

Try to restore again
—————————————–

I’ve been trying for hours now. And this isn’t the first time this happened to me. A couple of months ago I tried to restore and I had the same problem. I eventually gave up and got the files off of my wife’s computer, where I had still had them backed up from before using Mozy.

So yeah, their service seems great when you first start using it. Nice little program, runs automatically, etc. But if you need to actually restore your files, WATCH OUT. It might take a LONG time. Oh yeah, and they don’t have live tech support either. You have to e-mail and then wait…………probably until the next business day. I’m definitely canceling my subscription after I get my data back. I’ll try somewhere else next time, or back up to an external drive and keep it offsite.

On the surface, Mozy seems great. Simple, minimal configuration, offsite backup with unlimited storage (and no bandwidth charges) for a low price. That it where the greatness ends. It was only after using three months of service that I realized its pitfalls. If you do any of the following, Mozy thinks you are adding another computer to your account, makes you pay double, and begin your backup from scratch again:
- uninstall the client
- reinstall the client
- reinstall your OS
- get a new computer and transfer your old computers data to it
- have a hardware failure
- have a software problem

It takes FOREVER to upload. I ran my computer 24hrs a day for two months (over a 1T) and had only backed up 60GB of my 180GB of data. The mac client has some issues and even though my client said I had uploaded over 100GB, Mozy.com only had 60GB. I had to uninstall and reinstall the client because the auto update feature wasn't working and it restarted my backup from scratch! 2 months of uploads gone! I then got a new computer, and used USB to transfer all of my data from my old computer to the new. Mozy claims that when you get a new computer you have to use Mozy to transfer your data to it. Unfortunately, this means that both your old and new computer are out of commission for weeks on end, instead of using USB which for me only takes 1 hour. They claim that this is the way their service is designed to work and they have no plans to change. So, in other words, if you never buy another computer, never have a harddrive failure, a software problem, never want to reinstall your OS, and never actually need your data to be backed up, then Mozy is great. But then again, isn't that the point of Mozy?

Outstanding free online backup service with enterprise-class features. Not an online storage service, but a complete backup solution. A couple missing features, though: bandwidth throttling is by time only (no day of week), no customizable email alerts. Despite this, both the application and service are very impressive.

I've been using Mozy for about 10 days. I started with some experiments using the free 2GB version and within days upgraded to the fee-based 5GB version. The verdict? It just works. It does what it claims to do in the background with no fuss and no drama. I emailed Berkeley Data Systems support with one question and got a reply within 24 hours and that was on a weekend so I'm impressed with that. I've also signed my Dad up via the referral scheme and his experience is the same as mine ... it just works.

Oddly enough for something that should be boring (a backup solution that runs in the background), I'm pretty excited about this solution. I have it set up to initiate a backup pretty much as soon as I step away from the keyboard (I have it on 10 minute idle-time threshold) so, subject to it never running a backup within 2 hours of the last one, I only have a 2 hour window of vulnerability for any little change I make to files in My Documents. (I do run other full overnight backups so I think of Mozy as a safety net rather than my only backup.)

Finally, the initial backup can be lengthy (mine ran for about 36 hours with interuptions) but is very unobtrusive while running. I didn't notice it at all while web surfing, doing email and some OpenOffice stuff and I even held an hour long conference call via my VOIP phone while Mozy was doing the initial backup (I forgot Mozy was running when I scheduled the call) and the voice quality was unaffected, it was perfect throughout the call!

Being BETA I expected a few problems, so far just will not run as schedualed. I have to do the manual backup. I would like to see a ""Syncronise"" feature to show what needs to be backed up. If the BETA is what the final product will be, ie:2 gig free, then we FINALY have a NO EXCUSE system for data backup. After the BETA if final, I plan on buying more drive space. I like the idea of having an offsite data backup.

VERY NICE WORK Guys/Ladies :)

My backups are long gone but I never really lost anything since I mainain full backups on DVD. My thanks to the support at Berkeley Data Systems, Inc. for their help.

I tried this last year in December. I do backups on my own but thought this would be useful so I backed up my data only folders which means My Documents, a data folder with all of my installed software configurations, and other non-program data. A week later my system died and I bought a new one.

After reinstalling the OS and most used software I decided to check out the Mozy backup to see if there was anything in that backup that I could use.

Their system didn't recognise my id and password and when I wrote to them I was criticised for making only one backup and not having a better backup strategy in mind. They had not idea that all I did was a trial backup.

I felt they went immediately on the defensive and never restored my id or data.

Now that I'm seeing better user experiences here, I think I'll use it again with the idea that it is a secondary backup to my primary DVD+-R backups.

Pantagruel - you need to take a closer look, or perhaps try the software before offering such a worthless review.

The data is secure - either via a shared key with Mozy, or by your own key with 448-bit Blowfish encryption. For the paranoid, there's nothing stoppign you encrypting your data locally before you upload either, making it impossible for anyone but yourself to use.

While I agree it's certainly dearer than storing locally on removeable or external HDDs, such devices are fallible in their own right, and can be an inconvenience in that they require vigilant routines to make sure the data is stored off-site, in a safe location. One could equally argue that your 300GB HDD is a damn-sight easier to steal than hacking into Mozy's servers.

For one so paranoid about data security, perhaps you need to re-think your backup regime.

Pantagruel, your logic is discutable.

A remote backup is essential for any vital information. If you trust mobile hard drives as your main backup, you'll learn the hard way. Anyone with decent IT knowledge knows you need backups of your backup.

They're mainly saying that you don't need any costly hardware to get peace of mind, especially for home users and SMBs. You feel a lot safer to have some backup on a workstation + a remote copy . Let's say... you backup your stuff on your external hard drive, and oops.. you forget to bring it back with you, your place burns down or gets robbed. I've seen so much bad luck regarding data loss.. At work, I got copies of the main backup on 5 different workstations + occasional DVD external backups + external hard drive for daily external backups. I also keep a weekly copy on random workstations in case some data gets corrupted over time. (Backups are strongly encrypted)

Government? Fear remote access trojans more than government. The govt don't care about you and your data.. but kids do. They forge identities, steal cash, apply for credit cards and so on..

Hardware failure happens very often. What if your hard drive fails and your backup DVD is unreadable? You'll be quite happy to have a remote copy you can restore..

It's quite sad to see people giving low ratings without any good reason.

What the ..
From their web site:

"Buy a $200 external hard drive and hope your office doesn't burn down."

Ok, I am sorry, but this is retarded. Following this logic I can also live in fear that YOUR office or servers dont burn down , catch a virus etc. Its pretty idiotic.

Now, for $200 I can buy pretty large external hard drive. In fact, looking through newegg.com website, I see a 300GB hard drive for $105. So for 200$ I can have ~600GB space. Now, how much would 600GB cost me if I went with some shady Mozy remote backup. Simple calculation based on ~$20/5GB rate shows ~$2400.

$2400 vs. $200 , you do the math.

Plus, the goverment spying on every single bit of information, I feel pretty uncomfortable with anything that has "remote" word in it.
Zero stars. Useless piece of crap

Clearly, hondaman, you've got a serious internet connection at your disposal? I know the fastest 'net connection available in my area would be able to upload 100GB in say, I dunno, about 48 days. :P

Obviously if I wanted to surf the web or something at the same time, it would increase significantly!

I like the idea of the program, but I'm unsure about storing sensitive information on a service like this. I suppose if you just backed up encrypted files it would be an excellent system.

Nice idea. I was waiting for something like this. However, this incarnation wont work for me. It doesnt support network drives, and it doesnt support linux.

An option, at a monthly fee for a LARGE amount of storage would be extra nice. Say, 100 gigs or so.

I've used this Remote Backup one 3 computers for several months now and I love it! With 2G of free space and as much as 20G for a small annual fee, this is an awesome and effortless addition to my disaster and recovery solution. I installed the software, configured the interface to backup the files and directories of my choice and forgot about it. I recommend this to anyone looking for a remote backup solution.

This would not except any of my three e-mail addresses to get started.
If I can't sign in, then I can't use it.
Maybe the next beta.

so far so good, easy to set up, got 2gb of storage... will back up non-personal stuff just to make sure that this site is legit, considering it's too good to be true!

Also created a new email alias which I am using solely for mozy, just to see what kind of spam I receive thanks to signing up :)
