It's bloat! No doubt about it! I can't even begin to wonder why Nokia would make their software even slower than their mobile phones.

The software is in it self ok - really. It does most of the things it's supposed to as supposed to their new version, the Ovi Suite - OMG! More bloat and now stuff that used to be slow here with Nokia Suite simply doesn't work in Ovi. So even though this software is not that good it's better than upgrading right now.

I usually use the file browser with Bluetooth which is slow I know but it worked. The new version of Ovi doesn't even let you take a backup without using a cable. I guess we should be thankful they started to include the cables when you buy the phone - but still.

Ovi is even popping up on your screen when your phone is active. The sucks when you're plaiying a game and you get an sms - or if you're seeing a movie on your computer. But thankfully you can disable the "run on Windows startup" which of course totally makes the feature to autobackup your stuff go to waste.

The backup feature in Nokia Suite is also better because when taking backup with Ovi suite it appears to take all the included stuff on your phone with it aswell. I'm not sure if that's all the samle pictures, ringtones etc. AND the software you downloaded to your phone, e.g. GoogleMaps, Nokia Suite etc. but it simply never ends backing up - not on bluetooth anyway and all this when selecing "phone specific backup".

So all in all I'd say even though this software has gotten quite a bad review you should probably stick with it a while longer. The next generation is not looking better right now.

Nokia PC Suite freezes my PC everytime I run the "Get Connected" wizard.
Then I have to do a hard reset. Been trying for 3 days to fix it.
I'm an IT professional with an otherwise stable XP Pro system.
Very frustrating.

Stupid Nokia music module still won't connect to Nokia server at least with my n85 & firewall disabled. Last good version for me was way back at v6. There's complaints about the version seven's all over the Net. What a way to alienate customers.

To view the backup flle's content or extract contact, sms, calendars etc from it, you can try Noki at www.nokisoft.com. Noki is a Nokia backup file explorer. The supported backup file formats are:
1. for pc suite 6.5~7.1: .nbu, .nfb, .nfc
2. for SD card: backup.arc
3. for symbian contact database: contacts.cdb

Beta 18 is the worst yet. It demands to update my E62 to add support for "new features", and the phone spits out an an "update error" when I try. Considering that this is the ONLY smartphone Nokia has released on a US carrier for over two years, you'd think they could make it work correctly with their own software - sigh. I hear b19 is out but I can't find it anywhere.

I missed writing a review for beta 15 ...

* This pile of bloat just keeps on coming doesn't it ?
* The messages problem is still there in beta 15, cannot delete messages.

I really hope they separate the 32 and 64 bit version. 60 MB is no fun to download !!! :(

XX.14 was flaky, the main interface stopped showing any text after a few days of use. xx.15 was utterly non-functional..tried installing several times and it hung the system consistently. Downloading xx.16 right now, praying its a step forward. While 7.xx was a definate improvement over the last release, a few tweaks would make this a much more functional application:

* Please oh PLEASE, Nokia, enable Windows theme support for all parts of the Suite, or release an SDK for skinners. That awful Vista-like interface is hard on the eyes.
* When the PC Suite interface is invoked it usually says its updating messages, but it rarely does so. You nearly always have to click the yellow envelope button to force an update.
* In the Message Centre it would be REALLY nice if contacts could be displayed as "last name, first name". I guarantee if you asked them, 90% of users would want this to be the default. Why should I have to use a search window every time I want to find somebody? Just let me organize my list in a normal fashion! (And that goes for every email program out there).

xx.14 issues:

* Messages: BROKEN. Every time I try to send to a recipient, which worked fine under xx.12, it kicks back a "bad address" error or something to that effect. Even manually entering phone numbers doesn't help.
* Main interface stopped showing any text after a few days of use. All the graphic and animation elements were present, but not a character would show up. Tried rebooting and everything.

They should change the screenshot, it doesn't look like that anymore !!!
Although the new features of v7 are really nice, the Calender, Messaging, etc, this thing doesn't really delete messages from the phone.
It says "deleted" in the UI, but when I hit refresh, the message is back it the list, it has never been deleted from the phone!!! :( :(

Also, I think the size has doubled because they are bundling 32 AND 64 bit in the same installer .. ACK!!!

Floodland

Floodland reviewed v7.1.12.0 Beta on Oct 27, 2008

Good software, could be better, but still the best.

Doubledoom, I just tested Ovi and I disagree with you absolutely.
Ovi just hanged so many times that I lost count. It downloaded aged components which had to be updated (redownloaded) just after being installed. update manager did not work, so every application had to search updates for itself. The UI is absolutely counter intuitive, useless at best. I am GLAD Nokia still mantain PC suite, it only lacks an online content copier (flickr, picasaweb. youtube and such services). Ovi really was a painful attempt, with less options available and a pain to setup.
Ads? No, thank you, I just want to see what I want!
I hope it never replace pc suite. That day, I will drop my N95 trough the toilette.
Ovi is just another pathetic .net garbage. Long life to pc suite!

Nokia PC Suite 7.x series is markedly better improvement over the 6.x series. With better driver support, your Nokia mobile will be recognized a lot faster than in the older versions. The program too BIG though and takes up lots of resources. If it could be streamlined, made smaller and made to run faster, I would give it a higher score. I don't particularly like the GUI menu design. It's been changed since 6.x and some images/designs do not match.

Nokia's webmasters are not lazy, it's the file hunters who are jumping the gun, and list software ahead of an official release announcement.

Usually distribution of global impact software works so that, at first, files are being put on the server, distributed across servers for load balancing, and the release announcement can come in a few days after that.

slickandy

slickandy reviewed v7.0.6.3 on Jul 2, 2008

It's a shame they don't allow you to download it all at once. Downloading a 34MB and then running it, only to be told you've now got to download another 290MB is pretty annoying.

It's also a shame that Nokia's webmasters are too lazy to update their site with any reference to the new version.

Works well with my ancient phone on infra-red, and a much welcomed update from the very, very old version 4.88 that I was previously stuck with.

If you can put up with the obvious bloat, this is probably worth a look. If not, and you can put up with only basic functionality, look for Gammu.

scious

scious reviewed v7.0.6.3 on Jul 1, 2008

First its not a large bit of software, its enormous. On top of the 34mb dl it is then another 300+mb - what for?

Then the program does not work well, and is very dodgy with my chosen method of using bluetooth.

Very poor software from nokia.

aidanw

aidanw reviewed v7.0.6.3 on Jul 1, 2008

I give it a 4.5 - rounded up to 5.

Yes, it is a large piece of software, but most importantly it does work very well.

- The same PC Suite works for ALL Nokia's made recently. cf. SonyEricsson has different versions for smartphones P910, P990, then the normal phones K800 etc, and going back further the P800 had individual versions. Nokia used to do this too (e.g. Nokia 7650) but stopped years ago.

- Synchronisation is fast for a large number of contacts and PIM entries (ever tried using Samsung PC Studio? Or even iTunes with iPhone) and can be depended on not to double-up 99% of the time now.

- Image transfer wizard is great, you can tell it to automatically download photos from phone when plugged in, organise them into folders and then remove from phone. Very easy for customers.

- One Touch Access is truly an easy to use wizard for using your phone as a modem.

- The Nokia Software Updater is the easiest end-user firmware updater around. It covers 5x the phones that Motorola have, and is 5x faster than the SonyEricsson software updater.

I'm not a Nokia fan-boy, but I do truly think this software does what it should. Whether it is 10MB or 100MB doesn't matter if the customer experience is great and it works reliably.

Most customers have this ship on CD so the download size doesn't matter.

It will never be as light as ActiveSync, but at the end of the day if it is working reliably then it doesn't matter.

The main problems it has:
- Installing over top of old versions
- Not recognising phones via Bluetooth reliably
.. are occurring less and less. The problems of old (USB driver nightmares, synchronisation double-ups, errors when running PC Suite due to corrupt installation) have mostly disappeared.

Overall... remember not everyone is a geeky techie that wants all the extras or is concerned about how light the software runs.
Most people just want software to work.

Firstly, it DOES what it says on the box, and it is rather straightforward to use. So just for that, I can't give it 1. However, it is massively bulky: for being given a way to transfer files and contacts to and from Nokia phones, I don't think that the size of the package is justified at all. In fact, just because I can't bother downloading and installing this bulky piece of software, I keep using the MMC card and a USB card reader to do all my transfers (I have a s60v2). And to be honest, I can do everything I need this way, and at least as fast (not counting downloading and installing time which are eliminated altogether).

halc

halc reviewed v6.86.9.3 on Apr 28, 2008

Does what it is supposed to, but is BIG, bloated, buggy, slow and messes with USB-reading algorithms on WinXP and slows down USB HID device readings under heavy USB polling (actually one of the resident components does this).

I wish Nokia would finally see the light and understand that they cannot build one application by slapping layer-upon-a-layer of code without any refactoring, rethinking or architectural overhaul.

This software is becoming the iTunes of Nokia software: unnecessary evil that almost everybody hates, but must use for certain things.

So sad.

Clunky, takes over startup without option not to, runs in taskbar without warning, bloated (30megs for what?) - but i guess its functional enough. If there was 3rd party stuff available I'd give that a wizz, Since Nokia design the phone and this software youd think something sleeker would be easy. Well, what can I say. Everyone seems to hate this suite...

Nokia, at least for me, is the best celphone company. Their handsets are top notch, and they are always bringing new tech to us. Nokia PC Suite DOES WORK on Vista since Jan-30-2007 (the day that vista got released). And its the most complete, intuitive, nice and functional suite for celphones by far. I tested Motorola, Sony, Alcatel, LG, Philips, and their Suites are really crap.

Nokia PC Suite gets updated every 2 months, they add new functionality, its fast (c'mon people, a 1ghz cpu is fast enough to run it). The installer wights 30mbs, it's multiligual, what else do you want!? I installed it on almost 100 different pcs on all my clients and they NEVER EVER had ANY problem.

Just to point out, Im not a fanboy. Im realistic. If Im wrong, or there is something better, PROVE IT.

I'm reading some comments about PC Suite and asking myself - if people don't like it, why they are not interested in supporting Open Source projects for managing Nokia devices (donating, reporting bugs, coding, etc.) ? There are some (for Linux and Windows) already - Gnokii, Gammu and Gammu+ (last two started by me; last available on BetaNews)

marians reviewed v6.85 Release 12 on Nov 28, 2007

I use it. But running Nokia PC suite on any computer, no matter the hardware, would make you wonder why is this running so slow. Ok, I agree, transfering data between the PC and the phone might be slow but the rest of the suite should react extremely fast. Which unfortunately doesn't happen. Part of this comes from the bloated GUI. The other part, the "main" one ;-) is probably just bad programming.

@Adrian79: Instead of flaming over other users opinions on Vista or other apps, you should concentrate on reviewing the app that is reviewed/rated at the moment. Still, I will make the same mistake and say that some of us CAN afford Vista and still REFUSE to grant it more than "crap-level-OS" rank. Why ? Well, that's extremely simple: some of us had the weird idea of trying some other operating systems. And suprise ... Mac and Linux just blow away Vista. By far. I suggest you try them too. Later on, you might have the chance of never ever acting stupid again.

Now... back to Nokia... I also expect multiplatform flavors of the product. Something to compete with iSync on Mac and something to compete with mobile phone support on Linux.

Adrian79

Adrian79 reviewed v6.85 Release 12 on Nov 28, 2007

i only have a problem with people that "vista bash" when they are just hating for the fun of it. My ex has a Mac.. its nice, but not my preference.

@ osric(guy below): i didnt pay much for vista, and i used to dual boot with xp pro @ first when i wrote that last comment. since then,i have no more need to have xp.. i recently reformatted and removed xp completely.. all of my hardware/software(drivers) at this point is working great with vista and I no longer have nokia :-)

I only realized the Nokia PC Suit supports 3xxx+ (I mean 3120, and etc) model phones only I mean if you have Nokia 1600 or Nokia 1110i it won't support at all. That means Nokia won't support it's own and all we need to depend on Oxygen Phone Manager like 3rd software which is a real shame. This software seems to slow down the computer. As it is free I could give 2/5.

Humm, Linux has been around for more than 15 years and they still dont have a Linux version. I have to log in to Windows just to use this crap as it is the only software to interface my phone.

I've been playing around with this on my E60. I've had no serious problems using it so far.
The install was a bit messy. First PDFdetect fell over and closed, but after the the install went smoothly until the end, when it couldn't access the web - which it tried to do without asking. This caused it to crash but by then the install had finished.
4 stars is generous, I think. As this kind of software goes it's not bad but not fantastic either.

This version is EXTREMELY buggy. It has not been even partially tested. When you delete SMS msg it does not clear the PC display. The msg remains eventhough it says deleted. Why can't the software issue a ONE TIME notice that copyright items will not be backup. It is really annoying to see the msg over and over again. Can't imagine MS asking you to click "accept EULA" everytime you boot your PC! It also backups "static" files over and over again like ring tones and images. There is no reason to do so. This version runs a lot slower than v6.21. Bugs still remain in syncronizing contacts. When PC and phone is actively connected, adding a contact to phone will not show on PC. I would skip this version. I have gone back to 6.21.

I wish there is a backup option which allows me to nominate where to place the backup database and backup few versions. Its very easy to install new software and then the current backup is gone.

We have 1 pc in house and I don't want to install one copy for every member of the family. I wish future version can handle multiple nokia phones and backup various family phones.

I have used this application for a while with my 6630 phone and I find it superb for what it does. I have no difficulty with the USB connection and it simply does as it is made to do, for me.

Alternatives like Oxygen seem to be more featured (or bloated depending on your opinion) and cost a lot to buy. The other application I was looking at was mobiledit. But I haven't bothered as this one is fine.

is that its always running in the background and

I love this software as it does what its supposed to do perfectly. BUT it is VERY VERY bloated in terms of memory use. and there is no easy way to turn it off other than shutting down processes manually. nokia has no good excuse for this type of poor programming style. however its the best option out there for nokia phones as no other program does the job right (and dont say OPM, because it definitely doesnt work as well as nokia pc suite!)

Why Nokia are giving less option for backup, previous version used to have an option which data you want to backup messages, contacts, memory card, sepeartely, now they have removed that option. Loosers

pretty sad piece of software, doesnt even allow lastname, firstname sort order with my phone (6230i) and cant export outlook entries with company names only. so if you wanna upload a ringtone it might be your tool, but for some serious syncing its useless!

utomo,
how can you really compare Nokia's PC suite to the Oxygen phone manager.
Nokia has a nice tool, while oxygen although has some more features is a dangerous piece of... software.
The damn oxygen II, deleted all my saved messages (the contacts remained).
When I contacted their support, they told me that it's impossible that there software deleted my data, and they called me a liar.
So, all I can say, is use Nokia's suite despite its limitations and don't try to use software from people who don't know how to treat their customers. Their support annoyed me even more than the fact that they deleted my saved data.

Nokia Need to Improve a lot.
Nokia need to make one version for all Nokia Phone, and it is possible: look at OPM2.
Add more features.

There is better third party software such as Oxygen Phone manager II

I am still using 6.1.
Maybe 6.2 is also good and handy.
But the version came out after them are crap.
I don't get it. Why made the developers things like textmessage writing and managing them so complicated?

Therefore only '1'. I would have given the developers a '-10'. But that's not possible.

Running version 6.6.16. I'd like to echo reviewer edterpening's problems with IR connections. A workaround that sometimes works is to use the task scheduler to kill off the application tree for "LaunchApplication.exe" while it's still connected to your phone. This usually allows future connects to happen without rebooting.

I miss the ability to edit the contacts without having to synchronize my contacts (I dont use Outlook!) I think I last saw this in version 4 or 5.

Version 6.2x was quite good. I downloaded 6.41 only because I didn't have 6.2 nearby. The new icons and style looks nice, but the developers seem to have made simple tasks like editing your address book, deleting sms messages much more complicated as they are integrated into windows explorer and they are now more difficult to peform. Messages show only phone numbers instead of names. There is no connection between writing a message and deleting a message. Each task seems independant and not linked together as it was in the 6.2x. When I get a chance I will revert to 6.2x. It's a shame the developers have made using their mobile phone products so much harder.

This software is bug-ridden. The PC Sync software running in the Windows Task Bar will not exit properly. You must force an exit using the Windows Task Manager, and even then, you can't run the software again until you restart your PC. The biggest headache is the PC Sync softare only recognizes new connections (either through an IR port or Bluetooth) once. After you walk away with your phone and return back, it will not recognize the phone, even if you go to the Nokie Connection Manager and restablish the connection. The only way to get connected again is to restart your PC. I've reported this problem a number of times to Nokia, and they've passed the buck every time. I never get to a techie there, only customer service staff that just respond with canned responses. You know how that goes.

Sorry, can't recommend this software at all.
