When the layout is configured, Pan has a really nice workflow with its keyboard shortcuts. Does NZB well, too. Just needs small tweaks like the ability to pause PAR2 files and virtual folders. Although NewsLeecher runs fine on Linux, I switched to Pan because it's superfast and memory efficient.

I was looking for a more updated substitute for my excellent Gravity.

Unfortunatelly, althought the program works quite good, it requires GTK+ runtimes, which IMHO is a big drawback.

For Linux I'd give it a 5 since it's clearly the best option for that platform. For Windows I prefer Newsbin Pro 5.x, but there are several others (Windows) that beat out Pan as well. I wish Newsbin and Newsleecher, etc. would provide a port to Linux, but that's another topic entirely.

Too much of a pain in the a$$ to install.

Wow.. An old friend. I have this guy on my Linux box and use it all the time. Not as good as some of the Windows offerings but a good USENT client, light weight and handles binaries very well.

WHY? It's not the most intuitive to set up and does nothing that Gravity or Thunderbird already do.

Pan is quite a nice newsreader. Easier to setup and configure than, say, Xnews and the interface would be strikingly familiar to anyone who has used FreeAgent. While not the most powerful USENET client out there, it makes for a capable, easy to use and free newsreader that doesn't have the limitations of FreeAgent. I have used it since November on my boot from USB SLAX Linux dist and have been quite happy with it.
